ずっと むかし。
A long time ago.....
もうすぐ お正月が くる、年の くれのことです。
It was the end of the year, and New Year’s Day was approaching.
ふと、神さまが 山の てっぺんから ふもとを ながめると、どうぶつたちが げんきに あそんでいます。
From the top of a mountain, God looked down and saw the animals playing happily at the foot of the mountain.
「そうじゃ。どうぶつたちを あつめて お正月を いわおう。」
“Hmmm… I know! Let’s gather the animals and celebrate the New Year together.”
「だが、ただ あつめるだけでは つまらんなぁ。ふむ.....、いい かんがえが あるぞ。早く やってきた どうぶつに、りっぱな やくめを あげることに しよう。」
“But just calling them over won’t be very exciting. Hmm… I’ve got a good idea. I’ll give an important role to the animals who arrive first.”
神さまは、さっそく どうぶつたちに おふれを 出しました。
God quickly sent out a proclamation to all the animals.
その おふれには こう かかれてました。
It said:
『がんじつの あさ、わたしの ところへ くるように。早く やってきた じゅんに 一ばんから 十二ばんめまでの ものを 一年ずつ こうたいで その年を まもる、どうぶつの 王さまと します。』
“On the morning of New Year’s Day, come to see me. The first twelve animals to arrive will each be assigned a year to rule over, in the order they arrive. They shall become the animal kings of each year.”
それを 見て、どうぶつたちは 大はじゃぎ。
When the animals heard this, they got very excited.
「一ばんのりは ぼくだ！」さるが 木の上から さけびます。
“I’ll be the first one there!” shouted the monkey from a tree.
「早おきなら ぼくが 一ばんだよ！」にわとりは はねを ばたばた。
“I’m the best at waking up early!” flapped the rooster.
「早く お正月が こないかなぁ。」どうぶつたちは ゆびおり かぞえて、お正月を まちました。
“I can’t wait for New Year’s!” they all said, counting the days on their paws and hooves.
ところが ねこは ひるねを しているうちに、日にちを わすれてしまったのです。
But the cat, while taking a nap, forgot the exact date.
ねずみに きくと、いたずらずきの ねずみは うそを おしえました。
When it asked the mouse, the mischievous mouse told a lie:
「神さまの ところに いくのは、がんじつの つぎの日だよ。」
“We’re supposed to go to God’s place the day after New Year’s.”
ねこは すっかり あんしんして、また ひるねを はじめました。
The cat believed it and went right back to sleep.
大みそかに なりました。
Then came New Year’s Eve.
夕日に 赤く そまった 山の てっぺんを 見上げて、うしは のんびり いいました。
Looking up at the mountain glowing red in the sunset, the ox said calmly:
「わしは 足が おそいから、そろそろ 出かけよう。」
“I’m not very fast, so I’d better get going now.”
とこころが のそり のそり あるきだした うしの せなかに、こっそり よじのぼった ものが います。
Slowly and steadily, the ox began walking. But riding quietly on its back…
それは、うしの いえの となりに すむ ねずみでした。
was the mouse, who lived next door.
「うふふ。あるかなくても うしさんが はこんでくれるなんて。らくだなぁ。」
“Hehe. I don’t even need to walk—Mr. Ox will carry me. This is easy!”
のんびりした うしは なにも しりません。
The gentle ox had no idea.
せなかに ねずみを のせたまま、山みちを 一生けんめい あるいて いきます。
It walked diligently along the mountain path, with the mouse still on its back.
山の てっぺんに ついたとき、あさひが のぼりました。
Just as they reached the mountaintop, the first sunrise appeared.
はつ日の出です。
It was the first sunrise of the new year.
そのとき うしの せなかから、ねずみが ちょろちょろ かけおりて、神さまの まえに いちもくさん。
At that very moment, the mouse dashed down from the ox’s back and ran straight to God.
「神さま！ しん年 あけまして おめでとう ございまーす！」
“Happy New Year, God!”
「やあ、おめでとう。一ばんは ねずみか。」
“Ah, Happy New Year to you too. So the mouse is first.”
ねずみの せいで 一ばんに なれなくても、のんびりした うしは 気にしません。
Even though he lost first place because of the mouse, the calm ox didn’t mind.
「やあ、二ばんは うしだな。よしよし、よく がんばったなぁ。」
“Ah, the ox is second. Well done, you did great,” said God, patting him gently.
神さまに ほめられて、うしは うれしそうに しっぽを ゆらしました。
The ox wagged his tail happily when God praised him.
ほかの どうぶつたちは あさ 早く しゅっぱつしました。
Then came the other animals who had left early that morning.
ぴょん ぴょん 山みちを はねてきたのは、うさぎです。
Hopping along the mountain path came the rabbit.
そのあとを とらが おいかけます。
Chasing closely behind was the tiger.
「ひゃあ！ こわいよう。」
“Eek! How scary!”
うさぎが 草むらに かくれたすきに、とらは ゴールイン。
While the rabbit was hiding in the grass, the tiger reached the goal.
とらが 三ばん。
The tiger was third.
うさぎは 四ばんに なりました。
The rabbit ended up in fourth place.
空を とべる たつも おふれを みました。
The dragon, who could fly through the sky, also saw the official notice.
「なあに。一ばん 早くて、一ばん えらいのは この わしさ。」
“Hah, I’m the fastest and the greatest of all.”
たつは くもの 上から、のやまを 見おろしました。
The dragon looked down at the fields and mountains from above the clouds.
すると、へびが からだを くねらせて 山の てっぺんへと むかっています。
Just then, the snake was slithering toward the mountain peak.
「ややっ！ 空も とべない へびが わしより 早いとは！ ゆ.....、ゆるせん！」
“What!? A snake, who can’t even fly, is ahead of me!? I… I can’t let that happen!”
たつは くもを けちらして、山の てっぺんに ひとっとび。
The dragon swept away the clouds and soared straight to the top of the mountain.
たつは 五ばん。
The dragon was fifth.
そのあとに、とうちゃくした へびは、六ばんに なりました。
The snake, who arrived after that, became sixth.
うまは、ともだちの ひつじと しゅっぱつ しました。
The horse set out together with his friend, the sheep.
ひつじは とても おくびょうです。
The sheep is very timid.
草やぶが ガサゴソ 音を 立てるたびに びくびく しています。
Every time the bushes rustled, he flinched nervously.
「ぼく おおかみが こわいんだ。」
"I'm scared of wolves."
「しんぱいは いらないよ。ぼくが ひづめで けとばして やるから。」
"Don’t worry. I’ll kick them away with my hooves."
それを きいて、ひつじは ひとあんしん。
Hearing that, the sheep felt relieved.
みちばたの おいしい 草を、うまに おしえてあげました。
He showed the horse some tasty grass by the roadside.
「うまくん。たくさん おたべよ。」
"Mr. Horse, eat lots."
「ひつじくん。これは うまいや。」
"Mr. Sheep, this is delicious."
二ひきは なかよく、山の てっぺんに つきました。
The two of them, getting along well, reached the top of the mountain.
「うまくん。お先に どうぞ。」
"Mr. Horse, you go ahead."
「そうかい。ありがとう。」
"Is that so? Thank you."
こうして、うまが 七ばん、ひつじが 八ばんに なりました。
And so, the horse became seventh, and the sheep became eighth.
「神さま。おめでとう ございます。」
"God, congratulations."
「やあ、おめでとう。なかよしで よろしい、よろしい。」
"Ah, congratulations. It’s nice to see such good friends, very nice."
神さまは にこにこ しています。
The god was smiling warmly.
にわとりは 早おきです。
The rooster is an early riser.
ところが まえの ばん、おそくまで さわいでいて、うっかり ねぼうして しまいました。
However, the night before, he stayed up late making noise and ended up oversleeping by accident.
「コケッ、ケッ。こりゃ いかん。」
“Cluck, cluck! This is bad!”
にわとりは 大あわて。
The rooster was in a big panic.
はねを ばたばた させて、はしって いきました。
He flapped his wings and ran off.
山みちに くると、いぬと さるが けんかを しています。
When he reached the mountain path, the dog and the monkey were having a fight.
「うーっ、わん！ よくも 木のみを ぶつけたな！」
“Grr, woof! How dare you throw a nut at me!”
「き、きーっ！ しっぽに かみついたのは おまえだろ！」
“Eeek, eek! You're the one who bit my tail!”
にわとりは けんかを とめました。
The rooster stopped the fight.
「みんなで いっしょに いこうよ。」
“Let’s all go together.”
けれども さるは 木に かけあがって しまいました。
But the monkey dashed up a tree.
「やだね！ ぼくは 一人で いくよ！」
“No way! I’m going by myself!”
いぬと にわとりが、山の てっぺんに ついたときです。
Just as the dog and the rooster reached the top of the mountain...
ぴょーん。
Boing!
木の上から、さるが 神さまの まえに とびおりました。
From the top of the tree, the monkey jumped down in front of the god.
いぬと にわとりは、あわてて かけだします。
The dog and the rooster rushed forward in a panic.
そして どうじに 神さまの まえに つきました。
And they arrived in front of the god at the same time.
「さるが 九ばん。」
“The monkey is ninth.”
そして、神さまは つづけました。
And then, the god continued.
「にわとりが 十ばん、いぬは 十一ばんじゃ。」
“The rooster is tenth, and the dog is eleventh.”
いぬは おもしろく ありません。
The dog wasn’t happy.
「でも、神さま。にわとりくんと ぼくは、どうじに つきましたよ。」
“But God, the rooster and I arrived at the same time.”
すると 神さまは いました。
Then the god said:
「さるの つぎが いぬだと、けんかに なる。だから、あいだに にわとりを おいたんじゃよ。」
“If the dog came right after the monkey, there would be a fight. So I placed the rooster in between.”
神さまは、二ひきが けんかしたことを ちゃんと しっていたのです。
The god knew very well that the two had been fighting.
さるは はずかしくて かおが まっ赤に なりました。
The monkey was so embarrassed that his face turned bright red.
いぬも 下を むいて しまいました。
The dog also hung his head in shame.
そのとき、もうもうと 土ぼこりが ちかづいて きました。
Just then, a cloud of dust came rumbling closer.
いのししが ものすごい いきおいで かけてきたのです。
The wild boar came charging in with incredible speed.
「ざんねん。まちがえて ちがう山に いってしまったんだ。」
“Too bad. I went to the wrong mountain by mistake.”
「あはは。いのししが 十二ばんめ。これで、ぜんぶ きまったな。」
“Ahaha. The boar is twelfth. That makes everyone decided now.”
こうして 十二ひきが、じゅんばんに 年を まもる どうぶつに なりました。
And so, the twelve animals became the ones to guard the years in order.
やがて、ほかの どうぶつたちも やってきました。
Eventually, the other animals arrived too.
「神さま、おめでとう ございます。」
“Congratulations, God.”
「やあ、おめでとう。」
“Yes, congratulations.”
神さまを かこんで、にぎやかな おいわいが はじまりました。
Gathering around the god, a lively celebration began.
でも ねずみに、うその 日を おしえられた ねこは かんかん。
But the cat, who was told the wrong day by the rat, was furious.
だから いまでも ねずみを 見ると、すぐ おいかけます。
That’s why, even now, when it sees a rat, it immediately chases after it.
そして こんどは ねぼけないように、しょっちゅう まえ足で かおを きれいに しているのだそうです。
And so it won’t oversleep next time, the cat often washes its face with its front paws.
