(Greeting Month)
朝の会のとき、先生が言いました。
During morning meeting, the teacher said:
「今月は、あいさつ月間です。気もちのいい あいさつとは、どういうあいさつなのか、考えていきましょう。」
"This month is Greeting Month. Let's think about what makes a greeting feel good."
わたしは、「気もちのいい あいさつって、大きな声で あいさつを することなのかな。」と 思いました。
I thought to myself, "Maybe a good greeting means saying hello with a loud voice."
日曜日、おとうさんと 車で 買いものに 出かけました。
On Sunday, I went shopping with my dad by car.
しんごうのない おうだん歩道で、わたしと 同じ年ぐらいの 男の子が、車の止まるのを まっていました。
At a crosswalk without a traffic light, a boy about my age was waiting for the cars to stop.
おとうさんが 車を止めると、男の子は 頭を下げ、右手を上げて 歩きだしました。
When my dad stopped the car, the boy bowed his head, raised his right hand, and started walking.
おうだん歩道を わたり切ると、わたしたちの方に むかって もういちど、頭を下げて、歩いていきました。
After he crossed the street, he turned back toward us, bowed again, and continued walking.
おとうさんは、男の子の 後ろすがたを 見ながら、「気もちのいい あいさつだったね。」と 言いました。
Watching the boy’s back, my dad said, "That was a very nice greeting."
わたしが、「えっ、声を出して あいさつしていないのに？」ときくと、おとうさんは言いました。
When I asked, "But he didn’t even say anything out loud?",
my dad replied:
「声を出すことだけが 大切なのかな。」
"Is using your voice the only important part of a greeting?"
わたしは、おとうさんが 言ったことの いみを 考えました。
I thought about what my dad meant.
つぎの日の 朝の会のあいさつ。
The next morning during our class meeting,
わたしは、先生の方を きちんと見て、せすじをぴんと のばしてみました。
I made sure to look at the teacher properly and stood up straight.
そして、「おはようございます。」と言って、しっかり おじぎをしました。
Then, I said, "Good morning!" and bowed deeply.
それを 見ていた先生が、「とても いい あいさつでしたよ。」と、にっこりしました。
Seeing this, the teacher smiled and said, "That was a wonderful greeting."
