(Ice Cream Fell from the Sky)
ベッドの なかで くまたくんは めを さましました。
Teddy woke up in his bed.
めを ぱちぱちして、みみを すましました。
He blinked his eyes and listened carefully.
なにかが いつもと ちがいます。
Something was different.
あたりが しいんと しずかです。
Everything was silent.
いつも ばたばたばた.....と やってくる、しんぶんはいたつの おじさんの オートバイの おとが きこえません。
He couldn't hear the usual rumbling of the newspaper deliveryman's motorcycle.
ぶるん るんるんるん......と やってくる、ぎゅうにゅうやさんの けいじどうしゃの おとも きこえません。
Nor could he hear the hum of the milkman's small truck.
しいんと しずかです。
It was completely quiet.
くまたくんは、もういちど めを ぱちぱちしました。
Teddy blinked again.
まどの カーテンの すきまが ぽあーっと あかるいのです。
Through the gap in the curtains, a soft light glowed.
くまたくんは、ベッドから おりて、カーテンの すきまから そとを のぞいてみました。
He climbed out of bed and peeked outside through the curtains.
くまたくんは、びっくりしました。
Teddy was shocked.
そとが まっしろです。
Everything outside was completely white.
おにわの しばふも、つつじも、かきのきも、つばきも、さんりんしゃも、もんも、おむかいの いえの やねも、その むこうの いえの やねも、その また むこうの いえの やねも、なにから なにまで、どこから どこまで、まっしろです。
The lawn, the azaleas, the persimmon tree, the camellia, the tricycle, the gate, the roof of the house across the street, the roofs beyond it—everything, everywhere, was covered in white.
そして、そらから しろいものが、はらはら はらはら いっぱい いっぱい ふってきます。
And from the sky, white things were fluttering down endlessly.
くまたくんは、おおいそぎで おかあさんを おこしました。
Teddy hurried to wake his mother.
「ママ、ママ、おきて、たいへん たいへん！ そらから アイスクリームが ふってきた！ おにわに いっぱい、やねにも いっぱい！」
"Mom, Mom! Wake up! Something huge is happening! Ice cream is falling from the sky! The yard is full of it! The roofs are covered in ice cream!"
おかあさんが おきてきて、ガウンを きて、カーテンを あけました。
His mother got up, put on her gown, and opened the curtains.
そして、「まあ、まあ、よく ふったわねえ！」と いいました。
"Oh my, my! It snowed so much!" she said.
「アイスクリーム！ アイスクリーム！」と、くまたくんは、うたうように いいました。
"Ice cream! Ice cream!" Teddy sang happily.
くまたくんは、うれしくて うれしくて、おへやを とびだして ろうかを はしって、げんかんから はだかで そとへ とびだしました。
Overjoyed, he dashed out of his room, ran down the hallway, and, still in his pajamas, leaped outside barefoot.
「アイスクリームが いっぱいだあ！」
"It's full of ice cream!"
くまたくんは、おにわじゅうに ふっくら つもった アイスクリームの うえを あるきました。
He stepped onto the fluffy, snow-covered yard.
さくっ さくっと、あしが アイスクリームの なかに はいります。
Crunch, crunch—his feet sank into the snow.
「つめたい、つめたい！」
"Cold! Cold!"
くまたくんは、りょうてに アイスクリームを すくって くちに いれました。
He scooped up the "ice cream" with both hands and put it in his mouth.
「つめたい、つめたい！」
"Cold! Cold!"
はだしで とびだしてきたので、あしも つめたい、つめたい！
Barefoot and exposed, his feet grew icy cold.
そらから はらはら ふってくる アイスクリームが、あたまにも くびにも いっぱい かかって、つめたい、つめたい！
The falling "ice cream" covered his head and neck.
「くしゅん！」と、くまたくんは、くしゃみを しました。
"Ah-choo!" Teddy sneezed.
「くまた、くまた、パジャマの ままで ゆきの なかに でたら かぜを ひきますよ！」と、おかあさんが くまたくんを うちのなかから よびました。
"Teddy, Teddy! If you go out in the snow in your pajamas, you'll catch a cold!" his mother called from inside.
「はっくしゅん！」
"Ah... ah-choo!"
くまたくんは、あわてて うちの なかに はいりました。
Teddy hurried back inside.
おにわの アイスクリームに、ひとつ、ふたつ、みっつ、よっつ、いつつ、むっつ.....かわいい あしあとが つきました。
In the yard, his tiny footprints remained in the snow—one, two, three, four, five, six...
くまたくんの まちで、くまたくんが うまれてから はじめての おおゆきが ふりました。
For the first time since Teddy was born, his town experienced heavy snowfall.
バスも とまりました。
The buses stopped running.
トラックも はしっていません。
Trucks didn't move.
じょうようしゃも はしりません。
Cars stayed off the roads.
やおやさんの こがたトラックも、さかなやさんの こがたトラックも、きょうは おやすみです。
Even the vegetable seller's truck and the fish seller's van took the day off.
こどもたちは おおよろこび。
The children were thrilled.
ゆきの つもった どうろに でてきて あそびます。
They ran outside, playing in the snow-covered streets.
げたくんと はやとくんが まっさきに とびだしてきて、ゆきの うえを ころがりました。
Genta and Hayato were the first to dash out, rolling in the snow.
いのきちくんも、「ゆきだ、ゆきだ！」と かけだしてきて、まけずに ころがりました。
Inokichi ran out too, shouting, "Snow! Snow!" and rolled around.
きんこちゃんも うさこちゃんも、「まっしろ、まっしろ！ うれしい、うれしい！」と いいながら はしってきます。
Kinko and Usako ran in, giggling, "It's all white! So fun!"
あらい くまえちゃんも、「ゆき、ゆき、つめたい、つめたい！」と いいながら やってきます。
Even Arai Kumai joined in, squealing, "Snow! Snow! So cold!"
くまたくんも、「ぼくも いくうっ！」と いって、あしを ばたばたさせました。
Teddy flailed his legs excitedly. "I want to play too!"
そこで おかあさんが、くまたくんに、セーターの うえに ジャケットを きせ、けいとのぼうしを かぶせ、ながぐつを はかせました。
His mother dressed him in a sweater, a jacket, a knitted hat, and boots.
くまたくんは、「うわあい！」と とびだしていって、みんなの まねを して、ゆきの うえに ころんと ころげました。
"Yay!" Teddy shouted as he ran outside. Mimicking the others, he threw himself onto the snow.
すると、げんたくんと はやとくんと いのきちくんが、「そうれ！」と いって、りょうてで ゆきを すくって くまたくんに かけました。
Genta, Hayato, and Inokichi laughed and tossed handfuls of snow at Teddy.
くまたくんは、「ひゃあ！ひゃあ！」と いって よろこびました。
"Ahh! Ahh!" Teddy squealed in delight.
きんこちゃんが、りょうてで ゆきを かためて ちいさな ボールを つくって、「えいっ！」と、げんたくんに ぶつけました。
Kinko made a small snowball and threw it at Genta.
「いてえっ！ つめたい！」と、げんたくんは いいました。
"Ouch! Cold!" Genta cried.
そして、「ようし、やったなあ！」と いって、げんたくんも ボールを つくって きこちゃんに ぶつけました。
"You got me!" he said and threw a snowball at Kinko.
「わあい！ わあい！」
"Yay! Yay!"
うさこちゃんも なげました。
Usako threw a snowball as well.
はやとくんも なげました。
Hayato threw a snowball as well.
ゆきがっせんが はじまりました。
Soon, a snowball fight began.
いのきちくんと げんたくんと はやとくんと くまたくんが、おとこのこの くみです。
The boys—Inokichi, Genta, Hayato, and Teddy—formed a team.
きんこちゃんと うさこちゃんと あらい くまえちゃんが、おんなのこの くみです。
The girls—Kinko, Usako, and Arai Kumai—formed another.
「わあい！ わあい！」
"Yay! Yay!"
「ひゃあ！ つめたい！」
"Ahh! Cold!"
ゆきの ボールが とびかいます。
Snowballs flew through the air.
ばしっ！ ばさっ！とす！
Smack! Splat! Whoosh!
つめたい ボールが おなかに あたったり、せなかに あたったり、おしりに あたったり、おでこに あたったり、どこにも あたらなかったり、
They hit stomachs, backs, bottoms, foreheads—sometimes missing entirely.
「きゃあ！ きゃあ！」
"Ahhh!"
「たすけてえ！」
"Help!"
「もう やめてえ！」と、おんなのこの くみが いいました。
"Stop, stop!" the girls shouted.
ゆきがっせんは、おとこのこのくみが かちました。
The boys' team won the battle.
それから みんなで ゆきだるまを つくりました。
Then, everyone worked together to build a snowman.
くまたくんは、さんりんしゃで ゆきを はこびました。
Teddy used his tricycle to carry snow.
いのきちくんは、トラックで ゆきを はこびました。
Inokichi used his toy truck.
げんたくんと はやとくんは、トラクターに そりを つなげて、やまもり いっぱい ゆきを はこびました。なんかいも なんかいも はこびました。
Genta and Hayato pulled sleds, hauling big piles of snow again and again.
はこんだ ゆきを やまのように つみあげました。
They stacked the snow into a huge mound.
シャベルや スコップや いたを つかって、ゆきの やまを たたいたり けずったり しました。
With shovels and boards, they patted and shaped the snow.
けずりすぎた ところには、また ゆきの かたまりを くっつけて、いたで たたきました。
If they shaved off too much, they added more snow and pressed it down again.
おおきな おおきな ゆきだるまの からだが できました。
Soon, the snowman's giant body was complete.
きんこちゃんと うさこちゃんと あらい くまえちゃんは、三にんで ゆきを かためて おおきな ボールを つくりました。
Kinko, Usako, and Arai Kumai worked together to roll a big snowball for the head.
そのボールを こわさないように、ゆきの うえを ゆっくり ゆっくり ころがしました。
They carefully rolled it across the snow.
きしっ かしっ きしっ かしっ
Crunch, crunch.
ゆきの ボールは、ころがるたびに ゆきを くっつけて おおきく なります。
The snowball grew bigger as it collected more snow.
ぺた ぺたと たたいて かためます。
Pat, pat—they pressed it smooth.
きしっ かしっ きしっ かしっ ぺた ぺた
Crunch, crunch. Pat, pat.
おおきな ゆきだるまの あたまが できました。
The snowman’s head was ready!
きんこちゃんと うさこちゃんと あらい くまえちゃんは、ゆきだるまの あたまを こわさないように こわさないように、からだの うえに のせました。それから、くびの まわりに ゆきを かためて、あたまが からだの うえから おちないように しました。
They carefully placed it atop the body and packed snow around the neck to keep it in place.
「そうだ、めだまが いるぞ！」はやとくんは そう いうと、かけだしていきました。
"We need eyes!" Hayato shouted and ran off.
そして、みかんを ふたつ もって もどってきました。
He came back with two oranges.
ゆきだるまに、みかんの めだまが つきました。
The snowman now had bright orange eyes.
げんたくんが きのえだを ひろってきて、くちの かたちに つけました。
Genta found a tree branch and made a mouth.
うさこちゃんが、「おみみが ないわね。」と いって、はしって いきました。
Usako said, "It needs ears!" and ran off.
そして、つばきの はっぱを 二まい もって もどってきました。ゆきだるまに つばきの はっぱの みみが つきました。
She returned with two camellia leaves and placed them as ears.
「あっ、そうだ！」と いって、いのきちくんが かけていきました。
"Oh! I have an idea!" Inokichi shouted and ran inside.
そして、やきゅうぼうを もって もどってきました。
He came back with a baseball cap.
ゆきだるまに、やきゅうぼうを かぶせました。
They placed it on the snowman’s head.
「できた！」
"It's done!"
「できた！」
"It's done!"
「できた！」
"It's done!"
みんなで てを たたいて、ゆきだるまの まわりを まわりました。
Everyone cheered and clapped, dancing around the snowman.
くまたくんは、ゆきだるまと せいくらべを してみました。
Teddy stood beside it.
どっちが おおきかった でしょうね？

こどもたちは とても たのしかったので、くらくなるまで あそびました。
The children played until nightfall.
みんなが かえったあとで、そらに ほしが いっぱい でました。
After everyone went home, the sky filled with stars.
ゆきだるまは、たくさんの おほしさまに みまもられて、ひとりで どうろに たっています。
The snowman stood alone in the street, watched over by countless twinkling lights.
「おやすみなさい、ゆきだるまさん。」
"Goodnight, Mr. Snowman."
