(Tomorrow is the Field Trip)
あしたは えんそくです。
Tomorrow is the field trip.
バスの せきを、くじで きめました。
The bus seats were decided by drawing lots.
ぞうさんの おとなりに なった うさぎさんが、いいました。
The rabbit, who ended up next to the elephant, said:
「ぞうさんの おとなりは いや。ぞうさんの おとなりは せまいから いや。」
"I don’t want to sit next to the elephant. It’s too cramped sitting next to the elephant."
みんなは うさぎさんに いいました。
Everyone said to the rabbit:
「くじで きめたんだよ。」
"We decided it by drawing lots."
「そうだよ。うさぎさんも、くじびきが いいって いった でしょう。」
"That’s right. You even said drawing lots was a good idea, didn’t you?"
でも、うさぎさんは ききません。
But the rabbit wouldn’t listen.
「いやな ものは いや。どうしても いや。」
"I don’t care. I don’t want to. I just don’t want to."
すると、ライオンさんが いいました。
Then the lion said:
「ぼくが かわって あげるよ。ぼくが、ぞうさんの おとなりに すわろう。」
"I’ll switch with you. I’ll sit next to the elephant."
ああ よかった。
Ah, that’s a relief.
みんな ひとあんしん。
Everyone felt reassured.
ところが、うさぎさんが いいました。
But then the rabbit said:
「さるさんの おとなりも いや。さるさんは、おしゃべり だから いや。」
"I don’t want to sit next to the monkey either. The monkey talks too much, so I don’t want to."
みんなは うさぎさんに いいました。
Everyone said to the rabbit:
「せっかく ライオンさんが かわって くれたんだよ。」
"The lion went through the trouble of switching for you."
「さるさんと おしゃべりすると、きっと たのしいよ。」
"Talking with the monkey will surely be fun."
でも、うさぎさんは ききません。
But the rabbit wouldn’t listen.
「いやな ものは いや。どうしても いや。」
"I don’t care. I don’t want to. I just don’t want to."
すると、りすさんが いいました。
Then the squirrel said:
「じゃあ、わたしが かわって あげるね。」
"Okay, I’ll switch with you then."
こんどの おとなりは ねこさんです。
The rabbit’s new neighbor was the cat.
うさぎさんは ねこさんが だいすき。
The rabbit loved the cat.
「ねこさん、よろしくね。」
"Cat, I am looking forward to sitting next you"
すると、ねこさんが いいました。
Then the cat said:
「うさぎさんは、いやいや ばかり いうから、おとなりは いや。」
"Rabbit, since all you do is say you don’t want this or that, I don’t want to sit next to you."
