あらいぐまの リトル・ラクーンは、小さいけれど ゆうかんでした。
Little Raccoon was small but very brave.
ある日、おかあさんが いいました。
One day, his mother said,
「こんやは あかるい まんげつね。リトル・ラクーン、あなた ひとりで おがわまで いって こられる？ ゆうごはんの ざりがにを とってきて もらいたいの。」
"Tonight, the moon will be bright and full. Little Raccoon, can you go to the river alone and catch some crayfish for dinner?"
「うん、いいよ。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。「おかあさんが たべたことが ないような、おいしい ざりがに とってきて あげる。」
Little Raccoon replied, "Yes, I can. I’ll catch the tastiest crayfish that you’ve ever had."
リトル・ラクーンは 小さいけれど ゆうかんでした。
Little Raccoon was small but very brave.
大きくて あかるい まんまるな 月が のぼりました。
A big and bright round moon came out.
「いってらっしゃい、リトル・ラクーン。」と、おかあさんが いいました。
His mother said "see you Little Raccoon."
「どんどん いくと、おがわが ひろがった あさい ふちが あって、そこに、まるきばしが かかっています。そのまるきばしを わたるのよ。ざりがにが いちばん とれるのは、おがわの むこうぎし ですからね。」
"Keep going, and you'll come to a shallow edge where the river widens. There's a log bridge there. Cross that log bridge. The best place to catch crayfish is on the other side of the river."
リトル・ラクーンは、あかるい 月の ひかりを たよりに、でかけて いきました。
So, under the bright moon, Little Raccoon set off for the river.
いい きぶんでした。だいとくい でした。
As he ventured out, he felt proud and full of confidence.
ほら、ほら、うまれて はじめて ひとりっきりで、もりを あるいて いきますよ。
He was walking through the forest alone for the very first time,
ちょっと あるいて ちょっと はしって ときどき スキップ しています。
Walking a bit, sometimes skipping, and sometimes running.
まもなく、リトル・ラクーンは、大きな 木が ならんでいる ところに きました。
Soon, he arrived at a place where tall trees were lined up.
木の あいだで、ヤマアラシおじさんが、ねそべって いました。
Among the trees, Old Porcupine was laying,
ヤマアラシおじさんは、リトル・ラクーンが、たった ひとりで もりの なかを あるいているのを みて びっくりしました。
who was surprised to see Little Raccoon all by himself.
「たった ひとりで どこへ いくんだね？」
"Where are you off to, Little Raccoon, all alone?"
「おがわだよ。ゆうごはんの ざりがにを とりに。」リトル・ラクーンは とくいになって いいました。
"I’m heading to the river to catch crayfish for dinner," Little Raccoon said proudly.
「きを つけて いけよ、リトル・ラクーン。」と、ヤマアラシおじさんが いいました。「おまえには、ほーら、こんな はりが ないんだぞ！」
Old Porcupine warned him, "Be careful, Little Raccoon. You don’t have any sharp quills like me!"
「ぼく、こわくなんか ないや。」
"I’m not afraid!"
リトル・ラクーンは 小さいけれど ゆうかんでした。
Little Raccoon was small but very brave.
リトル・ラクーンは、あかるい 月の ひかりを たよりに すすんで いきました。
Little Raccoon kept walking, the bright moonlight guiding him through the forest.
ちょっと あるいて ちょっと はしって ときどき スキップ しています。
Walking a bit, sometimes skipping, and sometimes running.
まもなく リトル・ラクーンは、おいしい くさが しげっている ところに やってきました。
Soon, Little Raccoon arrived at a place where delicious grass was growing thick.
そこには、おおスカンクが いました。
There was Big Skunk.
おおスカンクも、リトル・ラクーンが たった ひとりで もりの なかを あるいているのを みて びっくりしました。
The big skunk was also surprised to see Little Raccoon walking all alone in the forest.
「たった ひとりで どこへ いくんだね？」おおスカンクが ききました。
"Where are you going, Little Raccoon, all alone?" asked Big Skunk.
「おがわだよ。ゆうごはんの ざりがにを とりに。」
"I’m heading to the river to catch crayfish for dinner,"
「きを つけて いけよ、リトル・ラクーン。」と、おおスカンクが いいました。「おまえは、ほーら、ぼく みたいに すごい においは だせないんだぞ！」
"Be careful, Little Raccoon," said Big Skunk. "You can’t release a stinky smell like me!"
「ぼく、こわくなんか ないや。」リトル・ラクーンは そういって すすんで いきました。
"I’m not afraid!" he said, continuing his journey.
リトル・ラクーンが おがわの ちかくまで くると、でぶちんウサギが ねていました。
Eventually, he reached the river, where Chubby Rabbit was sleeping.
でぶちんウサギは あしおとを ききつけると、かためを あけました。
Chubby Rabbit heard the sound of footsteps and opened one eye.
それから、ぱっと おきあがりました。
Then, he quickly jumped up.
「なんだ びっくりさせるなあ！たった ひとりで どこへ いくんだい、リトル・ラクーン？」
"You scared me! Where are you going all by yourself, Little Raccoon?"
「おがわまで いくんだよ。」リトル・ラクーンは とくいに なって いいました。
"I'm going to the river," Little Raccoon said proudly.
「うわー、ぶるぶる。」と、でぶちんウサギが いいました。
"Wow, brrr," said Chubby Rabbit.
「きみ、こわく ないのかい？」
"Aren't you scared?"
「こわいって、なにが？」
"Scared of what?"
「水の なかの あいつだよ。ぼくは こわい。」でぶちんウサギは いいました。
"That thing in the water. I'm scared," Chubby Rabbit said.
「ぼく、こわくなんか ないや。」リトル・ラクーンは そういって すすんで いきました。
"I'm not scared at all," said Little Raccoon as he continued on his way.
まもなく リトル・ラクーンは、おがわに つきました。
Soon, Little Raccoon arrived at the river.
あさい ふちに まるきばしが かかって いました。
A log bridge spanned the shallow edge of the river.
「これを わたるんだよ。」リトル・ラクーンは じぶんに いいきかせ ました。
"I need to cross this," Little Raccoon told himself.
「そして、むこうぎしで、ざりがにを とるんだ。」
"And then I'll catch some crayfish on the other side."
リトル・ラクーンは、まるきばしに のって、おがわの あさい ふちを わたり はじめました。
Little Raccoon stepped onto the log bridge and began crossing the shallow edge of the river.
リトル・ラクーンは ゆうかん でした。
He was brave.
でも、こころの なかでは でぶちんウサギに あわなければ よかったと おもって いました。
But deep down, he wished he hadn't met Chubby Rabbit.
あいつの ことなんか わすれよう。
I'll just forget about him.
水の なかの あいつの ことなんか、かんがえない ことに するんだ。
I'll stop thinking about that thing in the water.
でも、だめでした。
But he couldn't.
ついつい あしが とまってーそっと のぞくと.....
His feet stopped, and he cautiously peered into the water...
いる！ ほんとに なにかが いる！
It's there! Something is really there!
あかるい 月の ひかりの なかで、なにかが じーっと ぼくを みてる！
In the bright moonlight, something was staring right at him!
リトル・ラクーンは ころがっている なんて おもわれたく ありませんでした。
Little Raccoon didn't want to look like he was afraid.
そこで しかめつらを してやりました。
So, Little Raccoon made a scowling face.
ところが 水の なかの あいつも、しかめつらを したんです。
But the thing in the water scowled right back!
いじわるそうな その かお！
Such a mean-looking face!
リトル・ラクーンは にげだしました。
Little Raccoon bolted.
でぶちんウサギの まえを ひゅーっ！
He zoomed past Chubby Rabbit!
でぶちんウサギは びっくり ぎょうてん。
Chubby Rabbit was shocked.
リトル・ラクーンは どんどん にげました。
Little Raccoon kept running and running.
おおスカンクを みて、やっと あんしんして とまりました。
When he saw Big Skunk, he finally stopped in relief.
「どうした、どうした？」と、おおスカンクが ききました。
"What happened, what happened?" Big Skunk asked.
「水の なかに なにか でっかい やつがいて、かわが わたれないんだよ。」
"There's something big in the water, and I can't cross the river," Little Raccoon said.
「じゃあ、ぼくが、いっしょに いって あげようか？ ぼくが おいはらって あげる。」と、おおスカンクが いいました。
"Shall I come with you? I can scare it away for you," Big Skunk offered.
「だめ、だめ。」リトル・ラクーンは あわてて いいました。
"No, no," Little Raccoon hurriedly said.
「じぶんで おいはらうよ。」
"I'll scare it away myself."
「そうか、それじゃあ、いしを もっていけよ。」と、おおスカンクが いいました。
"Alright then, take a rock with you," Big Skunk said.
「そして 水の なかの そいつに、いし もってるぞ って みせて やるんだ。」
"Show that thing in the water that you've got a rock!"
リトル・ラクーンは なにが なんでも ざりがにを とって かえらなくっちゃと おもって いました。
Little Raccoon was determined to catch some crayfish and bring them back, no matter what.
そこで いしを もって、おがわの ふちまで もどりました。
So, he grabbed a rock and returned to the edge of the stream.
「もう あいつは いっちゃったかも しれないよ。」
"Maybe it's gone by now," he thought.
ところがーいました！水の なかに ちゃーんと。
But—there it was! Still right there in the water!
リトル・ラクーンは こわがっている なんて おもわれたく ありませんでした。
Little Raccoon didn't want it to think he was scared.
いしを さっと ふりあげて みました。
He quickly raised his rock.
すると あいつも やっぱり いしを ふりあげたじゃ ありませんか！
でっかい いし！
But the thing in the water raised a rock too—an even bigger one!
リトル・ラクーンは ゆうかん でした。
Little Raccoon was brave.
でも、まだ 小さい あらいぐま でした。
But he was still just a small raccoon.
だから、むちゅうで にげました。
So, he ran away as fast as he could.
ヤマアラシおじさんを みて やっと あんしん して とまりました。
When he saw Mr. Porcupine, he finally felt safe enough to stop.
「どうした、どうした？」ヤマアラシおじさんが ききました。
"What happened, what happened?" Mr. Porcupine asked.
リトル・ラクーンは、水の なかの あいつの ことを、おじさんに はなしました。
Little Raccoon told him about the creature in the water.
「あいつも いしを もって いるんだよ、おじさん。こんな こーんな 大きい いしを。」
"It had a rock too, Mr. Porcupine. A huge, huge rock just like mine!"
「それじゃあ、こんどは ぼうを もって いきな。」と、ヤマアラシおじさんは いいました。
"Well then, next time, take a stick with you," Mr. Porcupine said.
「そして、こんな ぼうだぞって よーく みせて やるんだ。」
"And show it a stick like this one!"
リトル・ラクーンは なにが なんでも ざりがにを とって かえらなくっちゃと おもっていました。
Little Raccoon knew he had to catch those crayfish and bring them back no matter what.
そこで、ぼうを かついで おがわの ふちまで もどりました。
So, he grabbed a stick and returned to the edge of the stream.
「こんどは、もう あいつだって いないかも しれないよ。」
"Maybe it's gone this time."
ところがーいました。水の なかに ちゃーんと。
But—there it was, still right there in the water!
リトル・ラクーンは、ぐずぐず しませんでした。
Little Raccoon didn’t hesitate.
ながい ぼうを さっと ふりあげて みせました。
He quickly raised the long stick and showed it.
ところが、水の なかの あいつも ちゃーんと ぼうを もっていました。ながーい ぼう！
But the creature in the water also had a stick—an equally long stick!
あいつも ぼうを ふりあげました。
The creature raised its stick too.
リトル・ラクーンは、ぼうを すてて にげだしました。
Little Raccoon dropped his stick and ran away.
どんどん にげて でぶちんウサギの まえを ぴゅーっ、おおスカンクの まえも ぴゅーっ、ヤマアラシおじさんの まえも びゅーっ、うちへ もどるまで とまりませんでした。
He dashed past Chubby Rabbit—whoosh! Past Big Skunk—whoosh! And past Mr. Porcupine—whoosh! He didn’t stop running until he reached home.
リトル・ラクーンは、水の なかの あいつの ことを おかあさんに はなしました。
Little Raccoon told his mother about the creature in the water.
「おかあさん、ぼくね、だれの ちからも かりないで ざりがに とって きたかったんだよ。ゆうごはんを とって きたかったんだよ。」
“Mom, I really wanted to catch those crayfish all by myself. I wanted to bring home dinner.”
「できますとも。」と、おかあさんは いいました。
“You can still do it,” his mother said.
「もう いちど おがわの ふちまで いってらっしゃい。でも こんどは しかめつらを してはいけません。いしを もって いっても いけません。ぼうを もって いっても いけません。」
“Go back to the edge of the stream once more. But this time, don’t make a frown. And don’t take a rock or a stick with you.”
「じゃあ、どうすれば いいの？」リトル・ラクーンは ききました。
"Then, what should I do?" Little Raccoon asked.
「にっこり わらうの。」と、おかあさんは いいました。
"Just smile," his mother said.
「こんどは 水の なかの ものに むかって、にっこり わらうだけに するの。」
"This time, smile at the thing in the water."
「それだけで いいの？」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Is that all?" Little Raccoon asked.
「ほんとに？」
"Really?"
「ええ いいの。ほんとよ。」と、おかあさんは いいました。
"Yes, that’s all. Really," his mother said.
リトル・ラクーンは ゆうかんでした。
Little Raccoon was brave.
それに おかあさんの いうことに まちがいは ありません。
And his mother was never wrong.
リトル・ラクーンは また おがわの ふちまで ひきかえしました。
Little Raccoon returned to the edge of the stream once more.
「こんどこそ あいつだって もう いないよ。」
"This time, that creature won’t still be there."
ところがーいました。水の なかに ちゃーんと。
But—there it was, still in the water.
リトル・ラクーンは にげたいのを がまんして、水の なかを のぞきこみました。
Little Raccoon fought the urge to run and peered into the water.
水の なかの あいつに むかって、にっこり わらって みせました。
He smiled at the creature.
あっ、あいつも わらった。
And—it smiled back!
リトル・ラクーンは すっかり うれしく なりました。
Little Raccoon became completely overjoyed.
こえを たてて わらいはじめました。
He began laughing out loud.
水の なかの あいつも あらいぐま そっくりの かおで たのしそうに わらって います。
The creature in the water, with a face just like a raccoon, was also laughing happily.
「あいつ、なかよく したいんだな。」リトル・ラクーンは ひとりごとを いいました。
"It wants to be friends," Little Raccoon said to himself.
「さあ、これで かわを わたれるぞ。」
"Now, I can cross the stream."
リトル・ラクーンは、まるきばしを’ わたって、むこうぎしへ いきました。
Little Raccoon crossed the log bridge and went to the other side.
ながれる 水の そこを ほって、ざりがにを さがしました。
He dug in the flowing water, searching for crawfish.
ざりがには、すぐに たくさん とれました。
Soon enough, he caught a lot of crawfish.
リトル・ラクーンは、まるばしを もどりました。
Little Raccoon returned across the log bridge.
水の なかの あいつに てを ふって やりました。
He waved at the creature in the water.
あっ、あいつも てを ふった。
Oh, the creature waved back!
リトル・ラクーンは、ざりがにを かついで、おおいそぎで いえに もどりました。
Little Raccoon carried the crawfish home in a hurry.
おかあさんと いっしょに ざりがにを たべました。
He ate the crawfish together with his mother.
こんな おいしい ざりがには はじめてでした。
These crawfish are the most delicious I've ever had.
おかあさんも そう いって くれました。
His mother said the same.
「ぼく、もう いつでも ひとりで ざりがに とりに いけるよ。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"I can go catch crawfish on my own anytime now," said Little Raccoon.
「水の なかの あいつだって もう こわくないよ。」
"I'm not afraid of that thing in the water anymore."
「そうね。」と、おかあさんも いいました。
"That's right," his mother agreed.
「あいつ、ちっとも いじわるじゃ ないよ。」リトル・ラクーンが いいました。
"That thing isn't mean at all," said Little Raccoon.
「ええ、そうよ。」と、おかあさんも いいました。
"Yes, that's true," his mother replied.
リトル・ラクーンは、おかあさんの かおを みて いいました。
Little Raccoon looked at his mother's face and asked,
「ねえ、おかあさん。水の なかの あいつ いったい なんなの？」
"Hey, Mom, what was that thing in the water, anyway?"
おかあさんは わらいだしました。
His mother started laughing.
そして、おしえて くれました。
And then, she told him.
