BOKUHA MAKENAI

(I Won't Give Up)

As soon as I got home from school, I opened my kanji notebook.

I’ve decided to always finish my homework before I play.

Because I’ve been working hard every day, I’ve gotten better at writing kanji, and I’ve even memorized all the multiplication tables.

But today, for some reason, I just don’t feel motivated.

One of my favorite TV shows is about to start, and I also have a game I really want to beat.

Thinking about that made me sigh.

Then, I heard a voice inside my head.

It was the voice of the “Give-Up Bug” inside me, singing its song.

“You don’t have to do your homework. Just be lazy for once.”

“If you start now, it’ll take a long time anyway.”

“Your favorite show is about to begin.”

“Let’s play video games!”

My head was full of a chorus from the Give-Up Bug.

I almost put down my pencil.

But then, I saw the flower stamp my teacher had drawn in the corner of my notebook.

Seeing that reminded me.

I remembered how my teacher had encouraged me, saying, “Keep up the good work!”

I remembered how practicing kanji and multiplication every day actually made me start to enjoy studying more than before.

I gripped my pencil tightly again.

“No matter how much I have to do, I’ll keep going. I won’t give up!”

As soon as I said that, the chorus of the Give-Up Bug stopped completely.

But then, I heard one last small voice.

“Okay, I’ll back off for today. But I’ll be back again!”

The end
