(Where’s My Treasure?)
ノブくんが ようちえんから かえってくると、おかあさんが いいました。
When Nobu came home from kindergarten, his mother said:
「ノブくん、おばあちゃんの おみまいに いってくるから、また、おるすばん おねがいね」
“Nobu, I’m going to visit your grandma in the hospital, so please look after the house again.”
「またあーっ。いやだよう、ぼく」ノブくんは ぷーっと ふくれました。
“Again? I don’t like it,” Nobu said, puffing out his cheeks in frustration.
「そうだ。ノブくん たからさがしして まっててよ。かあさん、いいもの かくしとくから」
“How about this? Nobu, why don’t you go on a treasure hunt while I’m away? I’ll hide something good for you,” his mother suggested.
「たからって なあに？」
“What kind of treasure?” Nobu asked.
「それは ないしょ。じゃ、かくれんぼの とき みたいに、むこう むいて、かぞえて.....」
“That’s a secret! Just like when we play hide and seek, you have to turn around and count…”
ノブくんは うしろを むきました。「いち、にい、さん、しい、ごお、ろく、しち、はち、きゅう、じゅう。もう ううかーい」
Nobu turned around and started counting. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten! Ready or not, here I come!”
「まだ まだ」おかあさんの こえが ２かいの ほうから きこえて きました。
“Not yet!” his mother’s voice called from upstairs.
「いち、にい、さん、しい.....」それから また、「もう いいかーい」って いいました。
“One, two, three, four…” Nobu continued counting. Then he shouted, “Ready or not, here I come!”
「もう いいよーう。じゃ、がんばってね」
“You can start now! Good luck!”
げんかんの ドアの しまる おとが しました。
Nobu heard the front door close.
それから また、ドアが あいて、おかあさんの こえが しました。
Then, he heard it open again and his mother’s voice called out,
「ノブくん、ひとつだけ おしえてあげる。たからものはね、しっぽが ついてるの」
“Nobu, I’ll give you one hint. The treasure has a tail!”
ノブくんは ふりかえりました。うちの なかは しーんとして、あめの おとしか きこえません。
Nobu turned around, but the house was quiet, except for the sound of rain outside.
ノブくんは かいだんを のぼって、そっと ２かいの ドアを あけました。
Nobu climbed the stairs and slowly opened the door to the second floor.
みまわすと、おしいれの とが あいていて、ふとんの あいだから、ほそい しっぽみたいな ものが さがって います。
He looked around and saw that the closet door was open, and something that looked like a thin tail was hanging out from between the futons.
「なんだあ、かんたんじゃないか」ノブくんが いそいで ひっぱると.....
“That’s easy,” Nobu said. He rushed over and pulled on the tail.
すぽんと でてきたのは、なんと ねずみです。
Out popped a mouse!
ねずみは しりもちを ついて、ズボンの かたほうに いっしょに いれてしまった ２ほんの あしを ばたばた’ うごかしながら いいました。
The mouse landed on its backside and, struggling with two legs trapped inside one pant leg, it flailed about and said,
「きみ、この ズボン なおしてよ。バスに のりおくれちゃうんだよう。はやく」
“Hey, can you fix these pants for me? I’m going to miss my bus!”
ノブくんは わらいながら いいました。「いいかい、あわてないでよ。ズボンの あしには あし ひとつずつ。あし ひとつ。しっぱいすると、かかしに なるぞ」
Laughing, Nobu said, “Take it easy. One leg goes into each pant leg. If you mess up, you’ll end up looking like a scarecrow!”
ねずみは こんどは じょうずに ズボンを はくと、そばに あった リュックサックを しょって、「ありがとう。いそぐから ごめんね。」と、はしりだしました。
This time, the mouse managed to put on its pants properly, grabbed a backpack nearby, and said, “Thanks! I’m in a hurry, so I’ve got to go,” and ran off.
「きみ、ぼくの たからものじゃないの？」ノブくんは あわてて ききました。
“Wait! Aren’t you my treasure?” Nobu asked in a hurry.
でも、ねずみは へんじもしないで、はしって いって しまいました。
But the mouse didn’t respond and kept running.
ノブくんは おいかけようと して、ほんだなの あいだに くろい さんかくの しっぽの ようなものが あるのに きがつきました。
Nobu tried to chase after it when he noticed something else: a black, triangular tail sticking out from between the bookshelves.
「あっ、こっちだ。きっと。」のぶくんが とびついて、ひっぱると.....
“Aha! This must be it,” Nobu thought and jumped to grab it.
なんと でてきたのは、ぼうしを かぶった ペンギンです。
Out came a penguin wearing a hat.
いきなり ノブくんに ぶつかって ころびました。
The penguin stumbled and bumped into Nobu, falling to the ground.
「めが どこかに いっちゃったよう。バスに おくれちゃう。はやく さがしてよう」
“I’ve lost my eyes! I’m going to miss my bus! Help me find them!”
「ちゃんと あるじゃないか。ぼうしの かぶりすぎだよ。いいかい、ぼうしは みみまで、おふろは かたまで。それから さきは あっぷ あっぷ」
“Your eyes are fine! You’ve just pulled your hat too far down. Remember, hats should go down to your ears, baths should cover your shoulders, and nothing more.”
ノブくんは ペンギンの ぼうしを なおして あげました。
Nobu said, fixing the penguin’s hat.
「たすかった。いそぐから しつれい」ペンギンは ころげるように はしりだしました。
The penguin looked relieved. “Phew, thanks! I’ve got to go now,” it said as it hurriedly rolled away.
「きみ、ぼくの たからものじゃないの？」
“Wait! Aren’t you my treasure?” Nobu called after it.
でも、ペンギンは だまって いって しまいました。
But the penguin left without saying a word.
すると、おやおや また タンスの ひきだしから ふんわり した しっぽのような ものが みえます。
Then, from the dresser drawer, Nobu saw something soft and fluffy like a tail peeking out.
ノブくんが せのびして ひっぱると.....
Nobu stretched out to grab it,
ぴょんと でてきたのは なんと うさぎです。
and out popped a rabbit.
「うまく できない。はやくしないと バスが いっちゃう」うさぎは マフラーを くびに まこうと していました。
“I can’t get it right! If I don’t hurry, I’ll miss my bus!” The rabbit was struggling to wrap a scarf around its neck.
でも、みみに ひっかかったり、あしで ふんで しまったり。
But the scarf kept getting caught on its ears or tripping it up.
「マフラーはね、いっぽんみちの ぐるぐるまわり」ノブくんは マフラーの はしを もって、うさぎの まわりを ぐるぐる まわりました。
“Here’s how you do it: a straight path and a good spin!” Nobu said, taking the end of the scarf and twirling around the rabbit.
すると、マフラーは ちゃんと まけました。
Soon, the scarf was neatly wrapped around the rabbit.
「ありがとう。じゃ、いそぐから」うさぎは はしりだしました。
“Thanks! I’ve got to hurry!” the rabbit said as it dashed off.
「きみも、ぼくの たからものじゃないの？」
“Wait, aren’t you my treasure too?” Nobu asked.
でも、うさぎは とぶように いって しまいました。
But the rabbit hopped away without a word.
ノブくんが がっかり して よこを むくと、カーテンの したから、おや、またまた しっぽのようなものが みえます。
Feeling disappointed, Nobu turned to see yet another tail-like thing sticking out from under the curtain.
「あれだ」
“There it is!”
ノブくんが えいと ひっぱると.....
Nobu pulled big,
ごろんと でてきたのは、チョッキを きた ふとった ぶたです。
out rolled a chubby pig wearing a vest.
「ボタンが はめられない。バスに おくれちゃう、てつだってくれ」
“I can’t button this up! I’m going to miss my bus! Help me!” the pig said.
ノブくんは とっさに いいました。「きをつけ。おしり つきだせ。おなか ひっこめろ。そのまま ボタンかけ はじめっ」
Nobu quickly jumped into action. “Stand tall! Stick out your bottom! Suck in your stomach! Now, let’s button up!”
ぶたは ノブくんの ごうれい どおりに しました。チョッキの ボタンは ちゃんと はまりました。
Following Nobu’s instructions, the pig managed to button its vest.
「たすかった。じゃ、ごめん」ぶたは はしりはじめました。
“Thanks a lot! Gotta go!” the pig said, starting to run.
「まって、きみ、ぼくの たからもの でしょ」
“Wait! You’re my treasure, aren’t you?” Nobu shouted.
でも、ぶたは しっぽを くるんと ふっただけで いって しまいました。
But the pig just wagged its curly tail and ran off.
すると、ようふくだんすの とびらの あいだから、とがった しっぽの ようなものが のぞいて います。
Then Nobu saw something sharp sticking out from the closet door.
「こっちだ。」ノブくんは すこし おこりたくなって いたので、らんぼうに ひっぱると.....
“Here it is!” Nobu, starting to get frustrated, gave a hard pull.
がらん ばたん、とびらが あいて、でてきたのは なんと かいじゅうです。
Bang! The door flew open, and out came a monster,
あしに うんどうぐつを ひっかけて、ぴょこぴょこ あるいています。
hopping along with sneakers tangled on its feet.
「はけない はけない、ちゃんと はけない。バスが いっちゃう、どうしよう。つめが のびすぎたよう」
“I can’t wear these! I’m going to miss my bus! What do I do? My claws are too long!” the monster said.
ノブくんは はさみを もってきて、「つめを きるのは ひるまが いい。あめが ふってりゃ もっといい」と うたいながら、つぎつぎ きって あげました。
Nobu brought out a pair of scissors and sang, “The best time to trim nails is during the day. It’s even better when it’s raining,” as he carefully clipped the monster’s claws.
かいじゅうは じょうずに うんどうぐつを はきました。
The monster managed to put on its sneakers just fine.
「ぼく かいじゅうと ともだちに なりたかったんだ。きみが ぼくの たからものだよね。きまりだよね」
“I’ve always wanted to be friends with a monster. You’re my treasure, aren’t you? You are, right?” Nobu asked eagerly.
でも、かいじゅうは どたどた はしって いって しまいました。
But the monster stomped off, leaving Nobu behind.
「ふん、もう、やーめたっ。」ノブくんは おこって、ごろんと ねころびました。
“Ugh, I’m done with this!” Nobu said, lying down in frustration.
すると、タンスの うえの ぼうしの はこから、また しっぽみたいなものが さがっています。
Then, from a hatbox on top of the dresser, he noticed something that looked like yet another tail hanging down.
ノブくんが らんぼうに ひっぱると、ちいさな つつみがぽんと おちてきました。
Nobu gave it a rough yank, and a small bundle dropped down.
あけると、ビスケットと あめ、それから、「これ たからもの。あとは おみやげ おたのしみ」と かいた てがみが はいっていました。
When he opened it, he found some biscuits, candy, and a note that said, “This is the treasure. Enjoy your treat. And here’s a little something extra.”
「ふん、これじゃあ、ただの おやつじゃないか。こんなの たからもの じゃない。」
“Hmph! This is just a snack! This isn’t treasure!”
ノブくんは ほんとうに おこりだして、ビスケットを がちがちって かみました。
Nobu said angrily as he crunched on the biscuits.
「ただいま」おかあさんが かえってきました。
“I’m home!” Nobu’s mom called as she returned.
「あっ、みつけたのね。やったじゃないの。さ、これが ほんとうの たからものよ」
“Oh! You found it, didn’t you? Great job! Now, here’s the real treasure,”
おかあさんは リボンの ついた はこを くれました。
she said, handing him a box with a ribbon on it.
ノブくんが はこを あけると.....
Nobu opened the box and exclaimed,
「ひゃああーっ」
“Wow!”
それは バスで、なかに ズボンを はいた ねずみ、えりまきを した うさぎ、チョッキを きた ふとった ぶた、うんどうぐつを はいた かいじゅうが のっていました。
Inside the box, sitting on a bus, were the mouse in pants, the rabbit with its scarf, the pig in its vest, and the monster in sneakers.
そして、うんてんせきには、ぼうしを ちゃんと かぶった ペンギンが、しんけんな かおで ハンドルを にぎっていました。
In the driver’s seat was the penguin, wearing its hat properly and holding the steering wheel with a serious expression.
