(Small Futon)
おかあさんが、うまれた ばかりの あかちゃんと いっしょに、びょういんから かえって きました。
The mother came back from the hospital with a newborn baby.
おとうとの ゆういちです。
It was my little brother, Yuichi.
ゆういちは、ちいさな ふとんから、かおと てを ちょこんと だして、ねて います。
Yuichi was lying in a small futon, with his face and hands peeking out as he slept.
しばらく みて いると、ゆういちは、まぶしそうに めを あけました。
After watching him for a while, Yuichi opened his eyes as if the light was too bright.
わたしは、「わたしが おねえちゃんよ。よろしくね。」と いって、あくしゅして みました。
I said, "I’m your big sister. Nice to meet you," and tried shaking his hand.
ゆういちの ては、わたしの ての なかに、すっぽり はいります。
Yuichi’s hand fit perfectly in mine.
まるで、だいじな たからものを もって いるような きもちに なりました。
It felt like I was holding a precious treasure.
「かわいいね。わたしも、こんなに ちいさかったの。」と、わたしは おかあさんに きいて みました。
"He's so cute. Was I ever this small, too?" I asked my mom.
「そうよ。よしこも、あかちゃんの ときは、この おふとんに ねたのよ。」
"Yes, Yoshiko. When you were a baby, you slept in this very futon," she replied.
おかあさんが、そっと かたを たたくと、ゆういちは、ちょっと のびを して、また ねむりました。
When my mother gently patted his shoulder, Yuichi gave a little stretch and fell back asleep.
わたしは、ふとんの よこに、ならんで ねて みました。
I tried lying down next to the futon.
「よしこは、もう この おふとんでは ねられなく なったわね。」
"Yoshiko, you’re too big to sleep in this futon now,"
おかあさんが、にこにこして いいました。
my mom said with a smile.
ゆういちは、ちいさな ふとんの なかで、きもち よさそうに ねて います。
Yuichi was sleeping soundly in his small futon, looking so comfortable.
