ダンボ DUMBO
ここは、サーカスの テントごやです。
This is the circus tent.
ある よ、たくさんの こうのとりが、サーカスの どうぶつたちに、あかちゃんを はこんで きました。
One day, many storks came to deliver babies to the circus animals.
とらの おかあさんも、きりんの おかあさんも、かわいい あかちゃんに おおよろこび。
The tiger mother and the giraffe mother were both overjoyed with their cute babies.
でも、ぞうの ジャンボの ところには、まだ こうのとりが きません。
But the stork had not yet come to Jumbo the elephant.
「わたしの あかちゃんは まだかしら。」
“I wonder when my baby will arrive.”
つぎの ひ、やっと ジャンボの ところにも、こうのとりが やって きました。
The next day, the stork finally came to Jumbo.
おおきな おおきな みみを した ダンボが とどいたのです。
It delivered Dumbo, a baby elephant with enormous ears.
「おめでとう、ジャンボさん。」
“Congratulations, Jumbo!”
「まあ、かわいい。ありがとう、こうのとりさん。」
“Oh, how cute! Thank you, Mr. Stork!”
ジャンボは、うれしくて たまりません。
Jumbo was overjoyed.
ダンボは、やさしい ジャンボおかあさんに だかれて、すやすや ねむりました。
Dumbo was gently cradled by his kind mother, Jumbo, and fell soundly asleep.
ところが、サーカスを みに きた いたずらっこが、ダンボの みみを みつけて からかいました。
However, some mischievous children who came to see the circus noticed Dumbo’s ears and began teasing him.
「やあい、やあい、へんな みみ。」
“Hey, look at those weird ears!”
「ひっぱって やれ！」
“Pull on them!”
それを みて おこった ジャンボが いたずらっこを つまみ あげたので、さあ たいへん。
Seeing this, Jumbo became angry and grabbed the mischievous children, causing a big commotion.
「おきゃくさんに らんぼうを する なんて けしからん。」
“It’s outrageous to be rough with customers!”
だんちょうさんは、ジャンボを おりに とじこめて しまいました。
The ringmaster locked Jumbo up in a cage.
「おかあさん、どこへ いっちゃったの？」
“Where did my mother go?”
ダンボは ひとりぼっちに なりました。
Dumbo was left all alone.
「あの この みみが、あんなに おおきいから いけないのよ。いやあね。」
“It’s because of those big ears. How awful,”
いじわるな ほかの ぞうたちは、ダンボを なかまはずれに します。
said the other mean elephants, who excluded Dumbo from their group.
「おかあさーん、あいたいよう。」
“I want to see my mom,” Dumbo cried alone.
ひとりで ないて いると、チモシーが でて きて いいました。
Just then, Timothy the mouse appeared and said,
「ダンボ。ぼくが あわせて あげるよ。」
“Dumbo, I’ll help you see your mom.”
チモシー‐は、ダンボを ジャンボの おりの まえに つれて いきました。
Timothy took Dumbo to the front of Jumbo’s cage.
「あっ、おかあさんだ。おかあさん、ぼく、おかあさんと いつも いっしょに いたいよう。」
“Ah, there’s my mom! Mom, I always want to be with you,” Dumbo said.
「かわいそうに、ダンボ。でも、ひとりでも がんばるのよ。」
“Poor Dumbo. But you must be strong, even by yourself,”
ジャンボは、ないて いる ダンボを、ながい はなで だいて くれました。
Jumbo said as she wrapped Dumbo in her long trunk, comforting him.
「さあ、ダンボ。そろそろ いこうか。」
“Come on, Dumbo. Let’s go now,” said Timothy.
「うん、おかあさん、さようなら。」
“Okay, Mom, goodbye,”
また、ダンボの めから、ぽろんと なみだが こぼれ おちます。Dumbo said as tears fell from his eyes.
かえりに チモシーと いっしょに おけの みずを のむと、なかに おさけが まざって いました。
On their way back, Dumbo and Timothy drank some water from a bucket, but it was mixed with alcohol.
ダンボも チモシーも ふらふら。
Both Dumbo and Timothy started to feel dizzy.
つぎの あさ。
The next morning—
「かあかあ、おはよう！」
“Caw, caw! Good morning!”
からすの こえで めを さますと、あれあれ？
Dumbo and Timothy woke up to the sound of crows,
ダンボと チモシーは、びっくり。
and to their surprise,
なんと、ダンボは、たかい きの うえで ねむって いたのです。
Dumbo was sleeping high up in a tree!
「ぼく、どうして ここに いるの？」
“How did I get up here?”
「きっと、おおきな みみで そらを とんだんだよ。」チモシーが いいました。
“You must have flown with those big ears of yours,” said Timothy.
「そうだよ。きっと、ダンボは そらを とべるんだよ。」
“You must have flown with those big ears of yours,” said Timothy.
「そうだよ。きっと、ダンボは そらを とべるんだよ。」
“That’s right! Dumbo, you can fly!”
「まほうの はねを あげるから、もう いちど とんで ごらん。」
“I’ll give you a magic feather. Try flying again,”
からすたちと チモシーに はげまされて、ダンボは、がけの うえから とんで みることに しました。
said the crows and Timothy, encouraging him. Dumbo decided to try flying from the top of a cliff.
「うんと みみを うごかすんだよ。」
“Move your ears as hard as you can,”
チモシーに いわれて、ダンボは、おもいっきり ぱたぱたと、おおきな みみを うごかしました。
Timothy told him. Dumbo flapped his enormous ears with all his might,
すると.....、ふわり。
and then...
とべました。
He flew!
ダンボは、ひろい ひろい そらを とんで いるのです。
Dumbo was soaring high in the sky.
「やったあっ！」
“Yay!”
「すごいよ、ダンボ。きみは そらを とべる ぞうなんだ。」
“Amazing, Dumbo! You’re an elephant who can fly!”
サーカスに もどった ダンボは、ショーに でる ことに なりました。

When Dumbo returned to the circus, he was set to perform in the show.
もえて いる たかい たかい いえの うえから、とびおりるのが ダンボの やくです。
His act was to jump from a burning, high building.
「さあ、ダンボ、とびおりるんだ。」ピエロたちが さけびました。
“Come on, Dumbo, jump!” the clowns shouted.
「だいじょうぶだよ、ダンボ。きみには まほうの はねが あるんだから。」
チモシーが いいました。
“Don’t worry, Dumbo. You’ve got the magic feather,” Timothy said.
ところが、とびおりた とたんに、はねが ひらりと とんで どこかへ いって しまったのです。
But just as Dumbo jumped, the feather slipped away and disappeared.
「わあっ。ぼく、もう、とべないよっ。」
“Ahh! I can’t fly anymore!”
「ダンボ、とぶんだ。きみは ひとりで とべるんだよ。」チモシーが さけびました。
“Dumbo, you can fly on your own!” Timothy shouted.
そして、つぎの しゅんかん.....。
And in the next moment....
びゅーん！
Whoosh!
ダンボは とんで いました。
Dumbo was flying!
おおきな みみを ひろげて、はねなんて なくても、ひとりで とんで いたのです。
He spread his big ears and soared through the air, flying all by himself, without the magic feather.
サーカスの おきゃくさんたちは、おおよろこびです。
The circus audience was thrilled.
「ぞうが、そらを とぶんだって。」
“An elephant that can fly!
そんな ぞうは、せかいじゅうに ダンボしか いないよ。」
There’s no elephant like Dumbo anywhere in the world!”
ダンボは、すっかり サーカスの にんきものに なりました。
Dumbo had become the star of the circus.
ジャンボも おりから だして もらって、いまでは いつでも ダンボと いっしょです。
Jumbo was also released from her cage, and now she and Dumbo were always together.
さあ、つぎの まちへ むかって サーカスの しゅっぱつです。
And so, the circus set off for the next town.
