DANGOMUSHI NO MARUCHAN

(Maruchan the Pill Bug)

I found a pill bug under a flower pot in our yard.

My big sister caught it and put it in a pudding cup for me.

“When you touch it, it curls up—how funny!” I said. Then my sister said, “Wanna try keeping it as a pet?”

We quickly decided on a name.

Since it rolls into a ball, we called it Maruchan.

After naming it, we got to work on building a home.

We thought keeping it in the pudding cup would be too cramped and sad.

“I want to make it like an amusement park,” I said. “It would be fun to build a slide and a swing!”

Then my sister said, “Yeah! I wonder what else would make Maruchan happy?”

While I was thinking for a while, she said, “Pill bugs like damp and dark places, you know.”

“Oh yeah, Maruchan was under the flower pot!”

So, we filled a small tank with moist soil and used stones to build a little hiding place.

As soon as we put Maruchan in, it crawled right into the stone hideout.

It looked like Maruchan liked the new home.

“Next, let’s get the food ready,” said my sister.

“I like curry,” I said, “but I wonder what Maruchan likes to eat?” “Let’s look it up in the encyclopedia,” said my sister.

It said pill bugs eat things like dead leaves, cabbage, and dried sardines.

“So it likes totally different stuff from me.”

My sister and I got some scraps of cabbage and put them in the tank.

“I hope Maruchan likes them.”

The end.
