できたてジャムはいいにおい
(Freshly Made Jam Smells Delicious)
シャディバンガーの森のおく、ふるい木のみにある、
ちいさな家にやまねのダドリーがすんでいます。
(In the deep forest of Shadybanger, in a small house at old tree,
lives Daddley the Dormouse.
ダドリーは、ねむたがりやで、
(Daddley is a sleepyhead)
それに、とてもくいしんぼう。
(And a very big eater too.)
ながい冬がはじまるまえに、
(Before the long winter begins)
おいしいジャムをつくります。
(He makes delicious jam.)
シャティーハンガーの森では、
(In the forest of Shadyhanger)
木の実あつめは、もうおしまいです。
(the gathering of nuts is already over.)
やまねのだとりーは、かんがえました。
(Daddley thought to himself)
「これだけあつめたから、冬のあいだは、
もうあんしん。あとは、大きなフラムを
ひとつさがしてくれば、木の実いりの、
おいしいジャムがつくれるな」
("I have gathered so much already, I am already relieved for winter.
If I can find one big plum, I can make delicious jam with the nuts.")
へやも、げんかんも、木の実で いっぱい。
(The room and the hallway are filled with nuts.)
ダドリーは、まどから でるしかありません。
(Daddley has no choice but to go out from the window.)
「くんくん、なんだかいいにおい、、、、」
("Sniff, it smells good somehow...")
タドリーは、森へむかいます。
(Daddley heads to the forest.)
ふるい、かしの木のきりかぶで、どんぐりをみつけました。
(Under the old oak tree, he finds acorns.)
「もったいないや、たべちゃおう」
("What a waste, let's eat them all")
タドリーは、みんな、たいらげてしまいました。
(Daddley eats them all in no time.)
しばらくして、タドリーは、プラムの木にたどりつきました。
(After a while, Daddley arrives at the plum tree.)
木の下に、ひとつぶ、さいごの実がおちています。
(Under the tree, one last fruit remains.)
プラムの上には、はらべこのはちがいます。
(On top of the plum, there is a hungry bee.)
「じゃましないでよ！」
("Don't disturb me!")
タドリーは、はちをおいはらいました。
(Daddley carefully removes the bee.)
さて、いえにたどりつくと、タドリーは、まどから、
まずプラムをおしこんで、それから、あとにつづきます。
(Now, when he arrives home, Daddley first pushes the plum
through the window, and then follows it.)
ところが、「え！？どんぐりのたべすぎ？」
But, "Eh!? Ate too many acorns?"
まえにもすすめない、、、、
(He could not go forward.)
かといって、うしろにももどれない、、、。
(But he could not go back either...)
つまり、たどりーは、しっかり、まどにはまちゃったというわけ。
(In other words, Daddley got stucck firmly in the window.)
そのとき、とおくから、おそろしげな音が、
(At that moment, from far away, a frightening sound comes)
ブンブンブンブンブンブンブンブンブンブンブンブン
(Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)
あとをおいかけてきたはちが、ちからいっぱいチクり！
(The bee that chased after Daddley, stings him with all force!)
「いたーい！」(Ouch!)
たどりーのからだは、コルクせんのように
スポんとぬけて、うれたプラムのま上にグシャッ！
Daddley's body slips off like a cork, and lands on top of the ripe plum)
ゆかの上には、すっかりつぶれたぷらむがひとつ。
(On the floor, there's one completely crushed plum.)
「あじに、かわりがあるじゃなし」
("Well, there is no change in taste")
タドリーは、プラムを、じまんのジャムせいぞうきにいれて、
スイッチをおしました。
(Daddley puts the plum into his proud jam--making machine, and press the switch.)
あまいにおいをかぎながら、せっせとジャムをかきまわします。
(While sniffing the sweet smell, he stirs the jam diligently.)
タドリーはだんだん、まぶたが、おもくなってきました。
(Daddley gradually feels his eyelids getting heavy.)
ジャムが、さめるのもまたずに、タドリーは、もベットのなか。
(Without waiting for the jam to cool down, Daddley is already in bed.)
ながいながい、冬のねむりにおちていきました。
(He falls into a deep and long winter sleep.)
