どっきり きりんのダンさん　DOKKIRI KIRIN NO DANSAN

(Surprising Giraffe Dan)

「あーあ、ねむたいなあ。こんな　いい　てんきに、そうじなんか　ばかばかしくて　してられないや。」

“Ah, I’m so sleepy. Cleaning on such a beautiful day feels ridiculous. I can’t be bothered with it.”

どうぶつえんの　しいくがかりの　ダンさんは　大きな　あくびを　しながら、きりんの　おりの　まえへ　やってきました。

Dan, the zookeeper at the zoo, came to the front of the giraffe enclosure while letting out a big yawn.

そして、きりんの　ドットを　みたとたん　ダンさんは　目を　ぱちくり　させました。

As soon as he saw the giraffe named Dot, Dan's eyes popped wide open in surprise.

なんと　ドットは、アカシアの　はなかざりの　ついた　すてきな　ぼうしを　かぶっているでは　ありませんか。

To his astonishment, Dot was wearing a lovely hat adorned with acacia flowers.

「へええ、えらく　めかしこんでいるじゃないか。いったい　どうしたんだ。」

“Wow, you sure are all dressed up! What's the occasion?”

「ええ、あのう、いなかの　かあさんに　あいに　いこうと　おもって.....」

“Uh, well, I was thinking of going to visit my mother in the countryside…”

きりんの　ドットは　はずかしそうに　こたえました。

Dot the giraffe replied bashfully.

ダンさんは　プッと　ふきだしました。

Dan burst out laughing.

「おまえ、ねぼけてんじゃ　ないのかい。おまえの　いなかは、とおい　とおい　うみの　むこうの　アフリカなんだぜ。いったい、どうやって　かえる　つもりなんだい。おまえなんか、どうぶつえんの　そとへ　一ぽでも　でてみろ。くるまに　はねられて　あっというまに　おだぶつさ。」

“Are you kidding me? You must still be half-asleep! Your hometown is far, far away across the ocean in Africa. How in the world do you plan to get there? If you even took one step outside the zoo, you’d get hit by a car in no time flat!”

ダンさんは　そういいながら、アカシアの　木の　下で、ほうきを　まくらに　ひるねを　はじめました。

Saying that, Dan lay down under the acacia tree, using his broom as a pillow to start his nap.

いつだって　ダンさんは、そうじに　きたような　ふりを　して、おとなしい　ドットの　おりの　中で、こうやって　ひるねを　していくのです。

Dot never once complained about it.

スワーッと、すずしい　かぜに　ほおを　なでられて、ダンさんは　目を　さましました。

A cool breeze brushed against Dan's cheek, and he woke up. 

ゆうやけが　あたりを　まっかに　そめて　います。

The sunset had painted everything around him bright red.

「しまった。きょうは　すこしばかり　ねすぎたぞ。」

“Uh-oh, looks like I slept a bit too much today!”

ダンさんは　あわてて　とびおきました。

そして、もう一ど　びっくりしました。

And then, he was startled once again.

きりんの　ドットの　すがたが、きえて　しまっていたのです。

Dot the giraffe had disappeared!

「おかしいな。あいつ、どこへ　いったんだろ。」

“That’s strange… Where could she have gone?”

ダンさんは　目を　こすりながら、あたりを　きょろきょろ　みまわしました。

Dan rubbed his eyes and looked around in every direction.

そのとき、ダンさんは　へんな　ものを　みつけました。

Then, he spotted something peculiar.

アカシアの　木の　えだで、なにか　きいろい　ものが　ぶらぶら　ゆれています。

Something yellow was swaying from the branch of the acacia tree.

ダンさんは　木に　よじのぼって、それを　ひっぱりおろしました。

Dan climbed up the tree and pulled it down.

「こ、こりゃあ　なんだ。」

“What in the world is this?!”

ダンさんが　びっくりしたのも　むりは　ありません。

It’s no wonder Dan was shocked. それは、きいろと　ちゃいろの　もようが　ついた、きりんの　けがわだったからです。

It was a giraffe's skin, patterned with yellow and brown spots!

そして　それには、ふしぎな　ことに、くびの　ところに　ながい　ながい　チャックが　ついていました。

What’s more, it had a long, long zipper running down the neck.

よく　みると、むねの　ところには、小さな　ポケットも　ついていて、てがみが　はいっていました。

Upon closer inspection, there was even a small pocket on the chest, with a letter tucked inside.

『しばらく　るすに　します。いなかの　かあさんが　おしえて　くれた　ように、アカシアの　はっぱを　十三まい　たべ、おまじないを　となえると、わたしの　からだは　ずんずん　小さく　なります。まめつぶほどに　なれば、かぜに　のって　どこへ　だって　いけます。るすを　よろしく。わたしの　ふくは　ダンさんに　あげます。ドット』

“I’ll be away for a while. As my mother taught me, if I eat 13 acacia leaves and chant a magic spell, my body will shrink smaller and smaller. Once I’m the size of a tiny bean, I can ride the wind and go anywhere. Please take care while I’m gone. I leave my skin for you, Dan. – Dot”

「な、なんだって。あいつめ、ほんとに　いなかへ　いっちまったのか。」

てがみを　よんだ　ダンさんは、あおく　なりました。

Reading the letter, Dan turned pale.

きりんが　いなくなったと　わかったら、どうぶつえんじゅうが、いや、まちじゅうが　大さわぎに　なるに　きまっています。

If word got out that the giraffe was missing, the whole zoo—no, the whole town—would be in an uproar.

「いやはや、これは　たいへんな　ことに　なったぞ。」

“Oh boy, this is a huge problem!”

ダンさんは、きりんの　ふくを　うでに　ぶらさげたまま、ぼんやり　つったって　いました。

Dan stood there, stunned, still holding the giraffe skin draped over his arm.

あたりが　とっぷり　くれた　ころ、ダンさんは、とつぜん　じぶんでも　びっくりするくらい　いいことを　おもいつきました。

As twilight settled in, Dan suddenly had a brilliant idea, one that surprised even himself.

「そうだ。あいつが　かえって　くるまで、おれが　あいつに　なってれば　いいんだ。まったく　おれは、なんて　あたまが　いいんだろ。」

“I know! Until she comes back, I can pretend to be Dot. Wow, I’m a genius!”

ダンさんは　大いそぎで、きりんの　ふくを　きはじめました。

Dan hurriedly started putting on the giraffe skin.

それから　まもなく、へんな　うわさが　どうぶつえんじゅうに　ひろがりました。

Not long after, strange rumors began to spread throughout the zoo.

いちばん　はじめは、きりんの　おりの　むかいがわの　しまうまが、となりの　らくだに　そっと　みみうちしました。

It all started when the zebra across from the giraffe enclosure whispered to the camel next door.

「ねえ、ないしょの　はなしだけどさ。どうも　あいつは、きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないみたい。」

“Hey, keep this between us, but I don’t think that’s the real Dot the giraffe.”

それを　きいた　らくだは、ながい　まつげを　しぱしぱ　させながら、ゆっくり　たちあがると、となりの　おっとせいに　むかって　いいました。

The camel, fluttering its long eyelashes, slowly stood up and passed the secret on to the sea lion nearby.

「ないしょだけど、あいつは　きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないんだってさ。」

“Just between us, but they say that’s not the real Dot.”

それを　きいた　おっとせいは、ザブンと　水の　中に　とびこむと、となりの　ペンギンの　おりの　そばで　ジャンプしました。

The sea lion, hearing this, splashed into the water, then leaped beside the penguin enclosure to spread the word.

「おーい、たいへんだ　たいへんだ。あいつは、きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないんだって。」

“Hey, big news! They say that’s not the real Dot the giraffe!”

それを　きいて、ペンギンは　おもわず　いわの　上で、ステンと　しりもちを　ついてしまいました。

The penguin was so startled it slipped and fell on its bottom on a rock.

ペンギンは　やっとこさ　たちあがると、となりの　白くまの　おりの　そばまで　はしって　いきました。

The penguin got up with great effort and ran over to the polar bear’s enclosure.

「ねえ、ちょっと　きいてよ。あの　こは、きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないのよ。」

“Hey, guess what? That giraffe isn’t the real Dot!”

それを　きいた　白くまは、しばらく　かんがえて　いましたが、やがて　大きな　こえで　むかいがわの　ぞうに　いいました。

The polar bear thought for a moment before calling out in a loud voice to the elephant across the way.

「あのねえ、きこえるかい。あいつは　きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないんだよ。」

“Hey there, can you hear me? That giraffe isn’t Dot!”

ぞうは　みみを　三かい　ばかり　ハタハタ　させたきりで、そのまま　のんびりと　ひるねを　はじめました。

The elephant flapped its ears three times and then went back to napping lazily.

目を　さまして　バナナを　七ほん　たべてから、やっとの　ことで、さっき　白くまが　いってた　ことを　おもいだしました。

After waking up and eating seven bananas, the elephant finally remembered what the polar bear had said.

ぞうは　ゆっくりと　たちあがると、となりの　きりんの　おりの　そばへ　いきました。

The elephant slowly stood up and walked over to the giraffe enclosure.

「ええと　なんだったっけ。ここんとこ　わすれっぽくて　こまっちゃうよ。そうそう、おまえさんは　きりんの　ドットじゃ　ないんだってね。ま、どっちでも　いいけどさ。」

“Um, what was it again? Lately, my memory’s been so bad… Oh yeah, they say you’re not Dot the giraffe. But, hey, who cares, right?”

ぞうは　そういうと、また　ひるねの　つづきを　はじめました。

The elephant lay back down and continued its nap.

びっくりしたのは、きりんの　ふくを　きた　ダンさんです。

The one most shocked was Dan, who was still wearing the giraffe skin.

おもわず　こしを　ぬかしそうに　なりました。

He nearly collapsed from surprise.

そして、あわてて　きりんの　ふくを　ぬごうと　しました。

Frantically, he tried to take off the giraffe skin.

ところが、どうした　ことでしょう。どんなに　ひっぱっても　くびの　チャックが　うごかないのです。

But no matter how hard he pulled, the zipper on the neck wouldn’t budge.

さあ、たいへん。

Oh no, what a disaster!

ダンさんは、あっちに　ゴロゴロ、こっちに　ゴロゴロと　ころげまわったり　しましたが、ふくは　ぴたりと　くっついて　はなれません。

Dan rolled and tumbled this way and that, but the skin stuck to him tightly and wouldn’t come off.

ダンさんは　すっかり　くたびれて、すわりこんでしまいました。

Exhausted, Dan slumped to the ground.

「ねえ　ねえ、おかあさん、あの　きりん　へんだね。くびも　あしも　ろば　みたいに　みじかいよ。」

“Hey, Mom, look at that giraffe. Its neck and legs are as short as a donkey’s!”

「あら　ほんと。ぶかぶかで　かっこわるい　きりんだわね。」

“Wow, you’re right. It’s a sloppy-looking giraffe!”

おりの　まえで、おとこの子と　おかあさんが　はなしています。

A little boy and his mother were chatting in front of the enclosure.

「ふん、こっちだって　なにも　すきで　やってるんじゃ　ないや。」ダンさんの　きりんは、ぷいっと　むこうを　むいて　しまいました。

“Hmph, I didn’t want to be doing this in the first place,” muttered Dan, turning away in embarrassment.

それから　三日が　すぎました。

Three days passed.

きりんの　おりの　むかいがわの　しまうまが、となりの　らくだに　そっと　みみうちしました。

The zebra across from the giraffe enclosure whispered to the camel next door.

「ねえ、あの　しんまいの　ぶかぶか　きりん　だけど、ずいぶん　子どもたちに　にんきが　あるねえ。いいせん　いってるよ。それに、ほうきを　まくらに　ひるねを　する　くせだって　けっこう　うけてるもんねえ。」

“Hey, you know that odd, floppy-looking giraffe? It’s become really popular with the kids. People seem to love it! Even the way it naps using a broom as a pillow is a big hit.”

ほんとうに　ダンさんは、あっというまに　どうぶつえん一の　にんきものに　なってしまいました。

Before long, Dan had become the zoo’s most popular attraction.

ちょっと　おかしな　きりんを　みようと、おりの　まえは　いつも　子どもたちで　いっぱいです。

The giraffe enclosure was always packed with children eager to see the funny giraffe.

ある　ばんの　ことー。

One evening—

ダンさんは、アカシアの　木の　上の　まるい　月を　ぼんやり　ながめて　いました。

Dan was gazing absentmindedly at the round moon above the acacia tree.

ひるま　たっぷり　ねむった　せいか、ちっとも　ねむたく　ありません。

He wasn’t sleepy at all, having taken plenty of naps during the day.

そのとき、おりの　まえに　一だいの　トラックが　とまりました。

Just then, a truck pulled up in front of the enclosure.

トラックの　中から、のっぽと　ちびの　ふたりの　おとこが　おりてきました。

Out of the truck stepped two men, one tall and one short.

「おやぶん、ほんとに　きりんを　ぬすむ　つもりですかい。」

“Boss, are we really going to steal the giraffe?” 

のっぽが　こえを　ひそめて　いいました。

Whispered the tall man.

「あたりまえよ。こんな　かわった　きりんは　めったに　いないんだぞ。こいつを　つれていって　大もうけ　するんだ。さあ、はやいとこ　トラックに　のせちまいな。」

“Of course we are! You don’t find such a unique giraffe every day. We’ll make a fortune! Now, hurry up and load it into the truck,”

ちびの　おやぶんは　いばって　いいました。

said the short boss confidently.

ふたりは　どうやら、きりんを　ぬすみに　やってきた　ようすです。

It seemed the two of them had come to steal the giraffe.

ちびと　のっぽは、おそる　おそる　きりんの　おりの　まえに　ちかづいて　きました。

The short man and the tall man cautiously approached the giraffe enclosure.

「かわいい　かわいい　きりんさん。とっても　おいしい　ごちそうを　してあげるから、おじさんと　いっしょに　トラックに　のろうね。」ちびが　ねこなでごえで　いいました。

“Hey there, sweet giraffe! We’ve got some delicious treats for you. Come ride in our truck,” the short man said in a sweet, coaxing voice.

おいしい　ごちそうと　きいて、ダンさんの　おなかの　むしが　ググーッと　なきました。

Hearing the promise of delicious food, Dan’s stomach growled loudly.

（しめしめ、そいつは　ありがたいや。アカシアの　はっぱばかりで、はらの　中が　おかしく　なってた　ところなんだ。）

(A treat? That’s exactly what I need! I’ve had nothing but acacia leaves, and my stomach feels all messed up!)

ダンさんは　大よろこびで、じぶんから　さくを　よじのぼって、とっとと　そとに　でてきました。

Overjoyed, Dan climbed over the fence himself and hopped out of the enclosure.

そして、ひょいっと　トラックに　とびのりました。

Then he quickly jumped onto the truck.

ちびと　のっぽは、あわてて　うんてんせきに　かけもどりました。

The two thieves scrambled into the driver’s seat.

「さあ、しゅっぱつだ。」

“Alright, let’s go!”

ちびが　トラックを　はっしゃ　させました。

The short man started the truck.

「おやぶん、いやに　なれなれしい　きりんですね。」

“Boss, isn’t this giraffe a bit too friendly?”

のっぽが、きみわるそうな　かおを　して、うしろの　まどから　きりんの　ほうを　ふりかえって　みました。

The tall man, looking uneasy, glanced back at the giraffe through the rear window.

「あれっ、きりんの　やつ、はらが　へってるのか　なんだか　げんきが　なさそうですぜ。」

“Hey, the giraffe looks hungry or something. It doesn’t seem too lively,” said the tall man.

「それじゃ、そこらへんの　パンくずでも　くわせときな。」と、ちびの　おやぶんが　いいました。

“Well, just throw some bread crumbs at it or something,” the short's boss replied.

これを　きいて、おこったのは　ダンさんです。

Dan was furious when he heard this.

「おい、いま　なんて　いったんだ。パンくずを　くわせろだって。それじゃ　はなしが　ちがうじゃないか。ごちそうを　してやるって　いうから、わざわざ　おりから　でてきて　やったんだぜ。」

“Hey! What did you just say? Bread crumbs? That’s not what you promised! You said there’d be a feast, so I came out of the enclosure for this!”

とつぜん　きりんが、うんてんせきを　のぞきこんで　おこりだしたので、ふたりの　どろぼうは　びっくり。

Suddenly, the giraffe stuck its head into the driver’s seat, yelling angrily, and the two thieves jumped in shock.

「おっと、と。あそこに　しゃれた　レストランが　あるじゃないか。やい、くるまを　とめるんだ！」

“Oh no, look! There’s a fancy restaurant over there. Stop the car, now!”

ダンさんの　いきおいに　のまれて、ちびは　あわてて　ブレーキを　ふみました。

Overwhelmed by Dan’s demand, the short man quickly slammed on the brakes.

「さあ、ここで　ごちそうに　なろう。」ダンさんの　あとから、どろぼうたちも　しぶしぶ　レストランに　はいりました。

“Alright, let’s have that feast here,” said Dan, and he led the way into the restaurant, with the reluctant thieves following behind.

「まず　はじめに、とびきり　じょうとうの　ワインを　のもう。それから、とうふより　ぶあつい　ビフテキと、てのひらより　でっかい　えびの　フライを　たべると　するかな。うーん、それに　チーズ　たっぷりの　グラタンと、大もりの　スパゲティーだ。おっとっと、ハンバーグも　たのもう。えーと、デザートは、メロンシャーベットと　チョコレートパフェで　いいだろう。」

“First, let’s have some top-notch wine. Then, a steak thicker than tofu and shrimp bigger than my hand. Hmm, let’s add a cheesy gratin and a mountain of spaghetti. Oh, and a hamburger steak, too. For dessert, melon sorbet and a chocolate parfait sound perfect.”

きりんの　ダンさんが　つぎから　つぎへと、ねだんの　たかそうな　ものを　ちゅうもん　するので、どろぼうたちは　ハラハラ　ドキドキ　しています。

Dan, dressed as a giraffe, ordered one expensive dish after another, making the thieves sweat nervously.

テーブル　いっぱいに　ならんだ　ごちそうを、まあ　たべるわ　たべるわ、ダンさんは　あっというまに　たいらげてしまいました。

Dan ate and ate, finishing off all the food that covered the table in no time.

「ウィー、おなかが　いっぱいだ。」

“Ah, I’m stuffed!”

ダンさんは、ぱんぱんに　ふくれた　おなかを　つきだして、うーんと　うしろへ　そっくりかえりました。

Dan stretched out his belly, now round and full, and leaned back in his chair.

ベリベリッと　おとが　しました。

なんと、きりんの　ふくが　おなかの　ところから、まっ二つに　さけて　しまったのです。

The giraffe skin split in half around his stomach.

そして、中から　よごれた　シャツを　きて、よれよれの　ぼうしを　かぶった　しいくがかりの　ダンさんが　よろよろと　でてきました。

Out came Dan, the zookeeper, in his dirty shirt and worn-out hat.

「ギャーッ　にんげんだ！」

“Ahhh! It’s a human!”

みんな、こしを　ぬかしてしまいました。

Everyone was so shocked they nearly fell over.

「ああ、うまかった。こんなに　おいしい　ごちそうを　たべたの、うまれて　はじめてだよ。それじゃ、どろぼうさん、ここの　しはらいは　おねがいしましたよ。ウィッ。」

“Wow, that was delicious! I’ve never had such a feast in my life. Well then, dear thieves, the bill is all yours. Cheers!”

ダンさんは　ワインを　のんだせいか、すこし　ふらふら　しながら　どうぶつえんへと　もどっていきました。

Dan, slightly tipsy from the wine, wobbled back to the zoo.

きが　ついたら、ダンさんは　キリンの　おりの　まえに　きていました。

By the time he realized it, Dan was back in front of the giraffe enclosure.

あれれ.....ダンさんは　ぽかんと　くちを　あけました。

Huh...? Dan stood there, mouth agape.

「お、おまえ、かえってきたのか。」

“Huh? Oh, you’re back!”

アカシアの　木の　下で、きりんの　ドットが　ほほえみながら　たっていました。

There, under the acacia tree, stood Dot the giraffe, smiling.

「ごめんなさい、おそくなっちゃって。ほら　この　ふく、かあさんが　あたらしく　つくって　くれたの。」

“Sorry for being late. Look, my mom made me a brand-new outfit!”

なるほど　ドットの　からだは、月の　ひかりに　てらされて　つやつやと　ひかっていました。

The moonlight cast a gentle glow, illuminating Dot's figure, making his body shine softly under its light.

ダンさんは　うっとりと　ドットの　すがたを　ながめていましたが、ぼうしを　かぶりなおすと、いいました。

Dan gazed at Dot with a dreamy look, then adjusted his hat and said,

「ま、かえってくりゃ　それで　いいんだ。あしたから　また　がんばるんだぞ。」

“Well, as long as you’re back, that’s all that matters. Do your best again starting tomorrow.”

そして、ほうきを　かたに　かつぐと、月よの　どうぶつえんを　ゆっくりと　あるきはじめました。

He hoisted his broom onto his shoulder and began to stroll slowly through the moonlit zoo.

「ダンさん、おやすみなさい。」と、ドットが　いいました。

“Good night, Dan,” Dot said.

すると、あちらからも　こちらからも、「おやすみなさい」「おやすみなさい」「おやすみなさい」「おやすみなさい」「おやすみなさい」「おやすみなさい」という　こえが　ひびきあいました。

Then, from all around, voices echoed, “Good night, good night, good night, good night, good night, good night.”

しまうまや、らくだや、おっとせいや、ペンギンや、白くまや、ぞうたちの　こえでした。

They were the voices of the zebra, camel, sea lion, penguin, polar bear, and elephants.
