(The Muddy Piglet)
こぶたは、おひゃくしょうさんの うちの、ぶたごやに すんで いました。
The piglet lived in the pigsty of the farmer's house.
こぶたは、たべるのが だいすき、うらにわを かけまわすのも だいすき、ねむる ことも、だいすきでした。
The piglet loved to eat, loved running around the backyard, and also loved to sleep.
でも、なによりも なによりも すきなのは、やわらかーい どろんこの なかに、すわったまま、しずんで ゆく ことでした。
But what the piglet loved most of all was sitting in soft, squishy mud and sinking into it.
おひゃくしょうの おじさんと おばさんは、とても こぶたを かわいがって いました。
The farmer and his wife adored the piglet.
「せかいじゅうで、いちばん かわいい こぶた だもんなあ。」
"It’s the cutest piglet in the whole world," they said.
あるあさ、おばさんが いいました。
One morning, the farmer's wife said:
「きょうは、おおそうじを しなくちゃ。」
"We have to do a big cleaning today."
まず、にかいの おおそうじ。
First, they cleaned the second floor.
それから、したの おおそうじ。
Then, they cleaned the ground floor.
「さあ、これで、うちじゅう すっかり きれいに なった。」おばさんは いいました。
"Now, the whole house is completely clean," the farmer's wife said.
「だけど、そとが とっても きたない。どれどれ、そとも おおそうじ して こよう。」
"But outside is so dirty. Let’s clean outside too."
おばさんは、うしごやを きれいにして、それから、うまごやも おおそうじ。
The wife cleaned the cowshed and then the stable.
つぎに、とりごやも おおそうじ。
Next, she cleaned the chicken coop.
こんどは、ぶたごやです。
Finally, it was time to clean the pigsty.
「おーや おや！」
"Oh my goodness!"
おばさんは びっくり。
The farmer's wife was surprised.
「ここが いちばん きたないねえ。」
"This is the dirtiest place of all."
すぐに ぶたごやの おおそうじです。
She immediately started cleaning the pigsty.
ついでに、こぶたを おふろに いれました。
And while she was at it, she gave the piglet a bath.
「これで よし、と。さあ、なにもかも さっぱりして ぴっかぴかに なった。」
"All done. Now everything is neat and shiny clean."
「あれ、ぼくの だいすきな やわらかーい どろんこは？」こぶたは ききました。
"Hey, where’s my favorite soft, squishy mud?" the piglet asked.
「なくなった みたいだね。」おじさんは いいました。
"It seems to be gone," the farmer said.
「きのどくな ことを したな。」
"I feel bad for you."
こぶたに とっては、きのどくでは すみません。
But feeling bad wasn’t enough for the piglet.
もう おこって しまいました。
The piglet was angry now.
「こんな うち、ぴかぴか すぎて、つまらないや。」
"This house is too clean and boring."
よるに なると、こぶたは とこ とこ、うちを にげだしました。
That night, the piglet trotted away from the house.
すこし いくと、こぶたは ぬまを みつけました。
After walking a little, the piglet found a swamp.
「わーい！」こぶたは うれしく なりました。
"Hooray!" the piglet exclaimed happily.
「こりゃ いいぞ、やわらかーい どろんこが あるぞ。」
"This is great! There’s soft, squishy mud here."
こぶたは どろんこの なかに すわって、ずずずーっと しずんで いきました。
The piglet sat in the mud and slowly sank into it.
「らくちん らくちん。」そのうち、こぶたは、ねむって しまいました。
"So comfortable, so relaxing." Soon, the piglet fell asleep.
「いたっ！」こぶたの はなに、とんぼが ぶつかったのです。
"Ouch!" A dragonfly bumped into the piglet’s nose.
「うはっ！」こぶたの あたまに、かえるが のっかったのです。
"Whoa!" A frog jumped onto the piglet’s head.
「ひゃっ！」こぶたの しっぽに、かめが かみついたのです。
"Yikes!" A turtle bit the piglet’s tail.
「ここから でて いけ！」おおきな へびが、いいました。
"Get out of here!" a big snake said.
「おれたちの ぬまを、よこどり するつもりか。」
"Are you trying to take over our swamp?"
そこで こぶたは、おおいそぎで ぬまを ぬけだして、また みちの うえを とこ とこ ゆきました。
So, the piglet hurriedly got out of the swamp and trotted back onto the road.
「ここは そうとう、きたない ところだなあ。」
"This place is pretty dirty," the piglet thought.
「この へんには、どうも やわらかーい どろんこが ありそうだぞ。」
"There might be some soft, squishy mud around here."
こぶたは、われた びんを みつけました。
The piglet found a broken bottle.
こわれた てれびも、ありました。
There was a broken TV too.
だいどころの ながしも、すーぷの あきかんも、ありました。
There was also a kitchen sink and an empty soup can.
でも、どろんこは、なかなか みあたりません。
But the piglet couldn’t find any mud.
「くるまって、おもしろいもんだなあ。でも、どろんこみたいに おもしろく ないや。」
"Cars are interesting, but not as fun as mud."
「そふぁーって、やわらかい もんだなあ。でも、どろんこほど やわらかくないや。」
"Sofas are soft, but not as soft as mud."
こんどは、こぶたの だいきらいな ものが、ありました。
Then, the piglet found something it hated.
こぶたは なにを みつけたのでしょう。
What did the piglet find?
「この へんに どろんこが ないわけだ。」
"No wonder there’s no mud around here," the piglet said.
こぶたは どなりました。
The piglet shouted.
そして、また みちを どんどん かけて ゆきました。
Then, the piglet dashed down the road again.
とうとう、おおきな まちまで やって きました。
Finally, the piglet arrived in a big city.
「ここは、くうきまで きたないぞ。」こぶたは つぶやきました。
"Even the air is dirty here," the piglet muttered.
「きっと、ここなら どこかに どろんこが ありそうだ。」
"There must be mud somewhere here."
どろんこは、すぐ みつかりました。
The mud was found quickly.
「わーい！どろんこ みつけたあ！」
"Hooray! I found mud!"
そこで こぶたは、やわらかーい どろんこの なかに すわったまま、ずずずーっと しずんで ゆきました。
The piglet sat in the soft mud and slowly sank into it.
「へんだね、この どろんこは。」こぶたは つぶやきました。
"Strange, isn’t it, this mud?" the piglet muttered.
「あまり やわらかくも ないね。あれ、だんだん かたく なって くる。」
"It’s not very soft either. Oh, wait, it’s starting to get harder."
こぶたが たちあがろうと すると、もう うごけません。
When the piglet tried to stand up, it couldn’t move anymore.
そのうち、ひとが やって きて、みんなで じっと、こぶたを ながめて います。
Soon, people came by, and they all stood still, staring at the piglet.
ひとは、どんどん ふえて きて、みんなで こぶたを みて います。
The crowd of people grew, and everyone kept looking at the piglet.
もっと もっと たくさんの ひとが、こぶたを みに きました。
More and more people came to see the piglet.
みんな、みちばたで せめんとづけに なった ぶたなんて、みた ことが ありません。
None of them had ever seen a pig cemented by the roadside before.
そこへ、ちょうど、おやくしょうの おじさんと おばさんが、くるまに のって やって きました。
Just then, the farmer and his wife arrived in their car.
「おい、すごい ひとだかりだぜ。」おじさんは、いいました。
"Wow, what a crowd!" the man said.
「ちょっと とめて、みて くるか。」
"Let’s stop and take a look."
「いいとも。だけど、はやく しとくれ。まだ、うちの ぶたが、みつからないんだから。」
"Fine, but hurry up. We still haven’t found our pig yet," the woman replied.
おじさんは、くるまを とめて、ききました。「なにごと ですかい、あれは？」
The man stopped the car and asked, "What’s going on here?"
「いやあ、たいした ことじゃ ないです。ぶたが いっぴき、みちばたで せめんとづけに なりましてね。」
"Ah, it’s nothing too serious. A pig got stuck in cement by the roadside."
「あれまあ！」おばさんは さけびました。
"Oh my!" the woman exclaimed.
「うちの ぶたじゃないか。みちばたで せめんとづけだなんて！」
"That’s our pig! Stuck in cement by the roadside, of all things!"
「おまわりさんを よんで くれ！ しょうぼうしゃを よんで くれ！」おじさんは どなりました。
"Call the police! Call the fire department!" the man shouted.
このときには、もう まちじゅうの ひとが、みんな こぶたを みに、あつまって いました。
By this time, everyone in town had gathered to see the piglet.
おまわりさんも たくさん きて、こうつう せいりを して います。
Police officers came to control the traffic.
しょうぼうふたちが、どうろを こわす どうぐを もって、きました。
Firefighters arrived with tools to break the road.
「おねがい！」と、おばさんが いいました。
"Please!" the woman said.
「きをつけて やって ちょうだい。せかいいち だいじな こぶたなんだから。」
"Be careful. This is the most precious pig in the world."
とうとう、せめんとの なかから、こぶたは でて きました。
Finally, the piglet was freed from the cement.
こぶたは、おじさんと おばさんの うでの なかに、すとんと とびこみました。
The piglet leapt straight into the arms of the man and woman.
こぶたは、おじさんと おばさんの くるまに のって、いっしょに うちへ かえります。
The piglet got into the car with them and headed home.
ちょうど うちに つくころ、そらが くらくなってきて、あらしに なりました。
Just as they arrived home, the sky grew dark, and a storm began.
あめが ざあざあ ふって きました。
Rain poured down in torrents.
「ほら！ ぶたごやに、また どろんこの ぬまが できたよ。」おじさんが いいました。
"Look! There’s a mud puddle in the pigpen again," the man said.
「もう、どろを そうじ なんて しないからね。」おばさんが いいました。
"I’m not cleaning up any more mud!" the woman declared.
すぐに こぶたは、ぶたごやに かけこんで、まず ごはんを たべました。
The piglet immediately ran to the pigpen, ate its food,
それから、だいすきな やわらかーい どろんこの なかに すわりこんで、しずかに、ずずずーっと、しずんで ゆきました。
and then sat in the soft, squishy mud it loved so much. Quietly, the piglet sank, slowly and contentedly, into the mud.
