むかしむかし、あるところに、ごんべえという男が すんでいました。
ごんべえは とっても びんぼうでしたが、まいにち とっても しあわせでした。
なぜって、ごんべえには、おはなという、とっても かわいい女房が いたからです。
ぱっちりと 大きなひとみに、長いまつげ。
わらうと、ほおに、かわいいえくぼが、ぺこりと へこんで、
「なんて かわいいんだろう、うふふふふふふ」と、ごんべえは もう、おはなの顔から 目がはなせなくなります。
それで、もう ずっと、おはなの顔から 目をはなせないまま、ごはんを たべても、こぼしてしうし、わらじを あんでも、へんてこな かたちになって、「こんな へんてこな わらじ、はけやしないぞ」と、みんなから わらわれます。
もちろん、畑へ いくことも できません。
やっと 決心して 家を でても、ちょっと はたらくと 「おはなの顔が、みたくなった。おはな！ おはな！ おはな！ ただいま！」と、にこにこもどって きてしまいます。
だから、ごんべえの 畑は 草ぼうぼう。
「これでは あんまり 畑が かわいそうかな」と、ある日、ごんべえは つぶやきました。
それで、おはなも 「いっしょに いられないのは、さびしいけれど」と、ごんべえと いっしょに かんがえて、「じゃあ、ごんべえ、わたしの 顔を 絵にかいて。その絵を 畑に もっていったら、さびしくは なくなるでしょう？」
ごんべえは おはなの顔を 絵にかきました。
おはなの顔から 目が はなせないので、なんまいも しっぱい しましたが、とうとう しあがった おはなの 絵は、おはな そっくりの かわいらしさ。
そして、その よく 朝から「じゃあ、いってくるよ」と、ごんべえは おはなの 絵をもって、畑に いくように なりました。
畑の まんなかの 桑の木に、おはなの 絵を かけて、ちょっと はたらくと、「おはなの 顔がみたくなった。おはな！ おはな！ ああ、そこに いるね！」と、絵を みると うれしくなるので、よく はたらくように なりました。
それで、ごんべえの 畑でも、ようやく たくさんの ナスや 豆が みのるようになった ある日、
「あっ！」
とつぜん つよい風がふいて、おはなの 絵を ふきとばしました。
「おはな！ おはな！ ああ、どこへ いく！」
ごんべえは あわてて おいかけましたが、おいつけません。
絵は ひらひらと まいあがって とんでいき、ちょうど 村を とおりかかった 殿さまの ぎょうれつの まんなかに おちました。
「ちっ、じゃまな 紙きれだ」と、殿さまの 家来が ひろいあげて、すてようとした とたん、絵のおはなの顔が 目にとまって、
「なんて かわいいんだろう、うふふふふふふ」
もう 絵から 目がはなせなくなって、そのまま たちどまって しまいました。
たちどまった 家来の せなかに、そのすぐ うしろを あるいていた 家来がぶつかり、ぶつかった 家来の せなかに また、そのすぐ うしろを あるいていた 家来が ぶつかり、殿さまの ぎょうれつは めちゃめちゃに。
「こらこら、なにを しておる。ちゃんと まえへ すすめ」と、殿さまは おこって、かごのなかから さけびました。
「いったい、なにごとじゃ。まったく もう」と、かんかんの 殿さまに「じつは 殿さま、これなる 絵すがたが.......」と、いちばん としとった かしこい家来が おはなの絵を みせました。
そのとたん、「なんて かわいいんだろう、うふふふふふふ」と、殿さまは もう 絵から 目が はなせなくなって、さけびました。
「この 絵すがたに かかれた女を さがしてまいれ。わしの 城に つれてかえる」
いちばん としとった かしこい家来は「また 殿さまの わがままか。めんどくさいなあ」と、おもいましたが、じぶんも おはなの 絵を よくみると、「なかなか かわいいではないか、うほほほほほほ」と、おもいましたので、さっそく 村のひとびとを たずねて 「だれか、この 絵すがたに かかれた 女を しらないか」と きっくと、「ああ、これなら、ごんべえの女房の おはなだ」と、ひとびとは すぐ こたえました。
それで さっそく、ごんべえの 家に やってくると 「殿さまの めいれいだ。この女を 城に つれていく」と、いったので、ごんべえも おはなも なきながら、「ゆるしてください。ゆるしてください」と、いいました。
ふたりの なみだで ゆかには、大きなみずたまりが できましたが、「しかし、殿さまの めいれいだ」と、いちばん としとった かしこい家来は くりかえすだけ。
とうとう、おはなは なきながら、ごんべえに いいました。
「ごんべえ、やくそくして。おおみそかの日に なったら、門松をしょって お城に うりにやってきて。そしたら わたし.......」と、いいかけた おはなの うでを 強引に つかむと、「さあ、はやく お城へ いくんだ」と、いちばん としとった かしこい家来は おはなを つれていって しまいました。
さあ、お城に つれられた おはなを みて、殿さまは おおよろこび。
おはなは むっつりと だまりこんで、笑顔ひとつ みせませんが、「なんて かわいいんだろう、うふふふふふふ」と、もう ずっと、おはなの 顔から 目を はなせないまま、ごはんを たべても こぼしてしまうし、字を かいても へんてこなかたちに なって「こんな へんてこな字、よめやしないぜ」と、家来たちは みんあ、かげで こっそり 大わらい。
もちろん、お城のしごとも できません。
でも、もとから 殿さまは みんなの やくにたつ しごとなんか なにひとつ やっては いなかったので、殿さまが 「おはなの 顔が みたくなった。おはな！ おはな！ おはな！ ただいま！」と、にこにこ、おはなのそばへ もどっていくと、「やれやれ、じゃまな 殿さまが きえてくれたぞ」と、家来たちも かたを たたきあって、みんなで にこにこするのでした。
そして、おおみそかの日が きました。
おはなが お城のなかで、朝から 耳を すませていると「門松、かどまつ、お正月の 門松は いかがかな」なつかしい ごんべえの こえです。
おはなは おもわず 笑顔を ほころばせて「ああ」と、たちあがりました。
「おはな！ おはな！ 門松売りが みたいのか」
殿さまは、はじめて みた おはなの 笑顔に うれしくなって、「あの 門松売りを お城に よべ！」と、家来たちに めいれいしました。
「これこれ、そこの 門松売り。殿さまの めいれいだ。お城に こい」
家来たちに つれられて、やってきた ごんべえは せなか いっぱいに 大きな門松を しょって「わははは、へんな かっこうじゃな」と、殿さまも おもわず わらいました。
おはなは さっきよりも、もっと 笑顔に なって、ほおに かわいい えくぼが ぺこり。
そんな おはなを みて「なんて かわいいんだろう、うふふふふふふ」と、殿さまは うれしくなって 「おはな！ おはな！ 門松売りが そんなに おもしろいなら、こんどは わしが 門松売りに なってやろう。これこれ、門松売り、めいれいじゃ。わしと 着物を とりかえよ」
ごんべえと 着物を とりかえた 殿さまは せなか いっぱいに 大きな 門松を しょって、上きげん。
「わははは、これは おもしろい。どうじゃ おはな、わしを みよ。門松、門松、お正月の門松は いかがかな」
「なんて そっくりなんでしょう、うふふふふ」
おはなは にっこりして いいました。
「そうか、そうか、門松、門松、お正月の門松は いかがかな」
殿さまは お城の にわに とびおり、いいました。
「なんて すてきなんでしょう、うふふふふ」
おはなも にこにこしながら、にわに おりて、いいました。
「そうか、そうか、門松、門松、お正月の門松は いかがかな」
殿さまは お城の 門へ でてみて、いいました。
「なんて たのしいんでしょう、うふふふふふ」
おはなも 手を うって わらいながら、門に よりかかって いいました。
「そうか、そうか、門松、門松、お正月の門松は いかがかな」
殿さまは 門から そとへと あるきながら いいました。
「なんて おもしろいんでしょう、うふふふふふふ」
おはなは お城の 門を ぴしゃりと しめました。
そして、かたく 門の かぎを しめて「さあ、殿さま、お正月を おむかえする おいわいを いたしましょう」と、殿さまの 着物をきた ごんべえに むかって いいました。
さあ、お城は うたや おどりが はじまって その にぎやかなこと、にぎやかなこと。
そのあいだ、しめだされた 殿さまは、お城の 門を たたきながら 「わしじゃ、あけろ。殿さまの めいれいじゃ」と、さけびつづけましたが、「あやしいやつ、あっちへ いけ」と、お城を まもる 家来たちに おいはらわれるばかり。
だれも 殿さまの 顔なんか きょうみがないので ちゃんと おぼえていなかったのですね。
いちばん としとった かしこい 家来だけが、殿さまの 着物を きた ごんべえを みて、「あれれ」とは おもいましたが、どうぜ 殿さまなんか、だれが なっても やくに たたないのは おんなじです。
それより、そばで にこにこ わらっている おはなを みて 「なんて かわいいんだろう、うほほほほほほ」と、目を はなせなくなって いましたから、それいらい、お城じゅうの みんなの着物は まいにち たべものの しみだらけに なりましたって。
**The Picture Wife (Esugata Nyoubou)**
Once upon a time, in a certain place, there lived a man named Gonbē.
Gonbē was very poor, but every day he was very happy.
Why? Because Gonbē had a very cute wife named Ohana.
She had large, sparkling eyes with long eyelashes, and when she smiled, a cute dimple appeared on her cheek. "How adorable she is, hahaha," Gonbē would say, unable to take his eyes off Ohana’s face.
Because he couldn’t stop staring at her, when he ate, he would spill his food, and when he made straw sandals, they turned out in strange shapes, causing everyone to laugh and say, "No one can wear such weird sandals."
Naturally, he couldn’t even go to the fields to work.
Even when he finally made up his mind to leave the house, after working just a little, he’d think, "I want to see Ohana’s face. Ohana! Ohana! Ohana! I’m back!" and return home with a smile.
Because of this, Gonbē’s field became overgrown with weeds.
One day, feeling sorry for the field, Gonbē mumbled, "This is too sad for the field."
Ohana, who also thought it was sad to be apart, suggested, "Why don’t you draw a picture of my face? Then, if you take the picture to the field, you won’t feel lonely."
So Gonbē drew a picture of Ohana’s face.
Although he failed many times because he couldn’t stop staring at her face, he finally completed a picture that looked exactly like Ohana.
From the next morning, Gonbē took the picture of Ohana with him to the field, saying, "I’m off."
He hung the picture on a mulberry tree in the middle of the field, and after working a little, he’d think, "I want to see Ohana’s face. Ohana! Ohana! Ah, there you are!" Looking at the picture made him happy, and he became a better worker.
Thanks to that, Gonbē’s field began to yield plenty of eggplants and beans.
One day, when the crops were finally thriving, a strong wind suddenly blew and carried away Ohana’s picture.
"Ohana! Ohana! Where are you going?" Gonbē frantically chased after it, but he couldn’t catch up.
The picture flew higher and eventually landed right in the middle of a lord’s procession passing through the village.
"What a nuisance," said the lord’s retainer, who picked up the picture, ready to throw it away, but then he noticed Ohana’s face.
"How adorable she is, hahaha," the retainer exclaimed, unable to take his eyes off the picture, causing him to stop in his tracks.
As he stood still, the retainer walking behind him bumped into him, and the one behind that retainer also bumped into the one in front, resulting in chaos in the lord’s procession.
"What are you doing? Keep moving forward!" the lord shouted angrily from his palanquin.
"What on earth is going on? This is outrageous!" the furious lord demanded to know, and the oldest, wisest retainer showed the picture to the lord.
The moment the lord saw it, he too exclaimed, "How adorable she is, hahaha," and couldn’t take his eyes off the picture.
"Find the woman in this picture and bring her to my castle," the lord ordered.
Although the oldest, wisest retainer thought to himself, "The lord’s whims are such a bother," he also found himself charmed by the picture, thinking, "She is indeed cute, hahaha." So, he quickly asked the villagers, "Does anyone know the woman in this picture?"
The villagers immediately replied, "Ah, that’s Gonbē’s wife, Ohana."
So the retainer went straight to Gonbē’s house and said, "By the lord’s command, we are taking this woman to the castle."
Gonbē and Ohana, crying, pleaded, "Please, please let us be."
Their tears formed a large puddle on the floor, but the retainer simply repeated, "It’s the lord’s command."
Finally, through tears, Ohana told Gonbē, "Gonbē, promise me. When New Year’s Eve comes, carry the New Year’s pine decoration to the castle to sell. Then I will..."
But before she could finish, the retainer forcefully grabbed her arm and said, "Come, it’s time to go to the castle," and took her away.
At the castle, the lord was overjoyed when he saw Ohana.
Although she remained silent and didn’t smile at all, the lord couldn’t help but exclaim, "How adorable she is, hahaha." He became so fixated on her that he spilled his food when eating and wrote strange characters when writing, causing the retainers to laugh secretly behind his back, saying, "What ridiculous writing!"
Of course, he couldn’t do any work at the castle either.
But since the lord had never done any useful work anyway, the retainers were actually relieved whenever he would say, "I want to see Ohana’s face. Ohana! Ohana! Ohana! I’m back!" and return to her side with a smile, allowing them to carry on with their work in peace.
And so, New Year’s Eve arrived.
From the morning, Ohana listened intently, and finally heard Gonbē’s familiar voice: "Pine decorations for the New Year! How about a pine decoration for your New Year celebration?"
Ohana couldn’t help but smile and stood up.
"Ohana! Ohana! Do you want to see the pine decoration seller?" the lord asked, delighted to see her smile for the first time, and ordered his retainers, "Bring that pine decoration seller to the castle!"
"Hey there, pine decoration seller! By the lord’s command, come to the castle," the retainers said, leading Gonbē, who was carrying a large pine decoration on his back, to the castle.
"Hahaha, what a strange sight," even the lord laughed.
Ohana, now smiling more brightly, had her dimpled cheek showing.
Seeing her like this, the lord exclaimed happily, "How adorable she is, hahaha. Ohana! Ohana! If you find the pine decoration seller so amusing, then I shall become a pine decoration seller myself! Pine decoration seller, I command you to trade clothes with me!"
The lord swapped clothes with Gonbē, and, carrying the large pine decoration on his back, he was in high spirits.
"Hahaha, this is fun! What do you think, Ohana? Pine decorations! Pine decorations! How about a pine decoration for the New Year?"
"Oh, how delightful, hahaha," Ohana replied with a smile.
"Indeed! Pine decorations! Pine decorations! How about a pine decoration for the New Year?" the lord said as he jumped into the castle garden.
"Oh, how wonderful, hahaha," Ohana said, smiling even more as she followed him into the garden.
"Indeed! Pine decorations! Pine decorations! How about a pine decoration for the New Year?" the lord said as he reached the castle gate.
"Oh, how fun, hahaha," Ohana said, clapping her hands and leaning against the gate.
"Indeed! Pine decorations! Pine decorations! How about a pine decoration for the New Year?" the lord said as he walked out of the castle gate.
"Oh, how amusing, hahaha," Ohana said as she quickly shut the castle gate.
Then, locking the gate securely, she turned to Gonbē, who was now wearing the lord’s clothes, and said, "Now, Gonbē, let’s celebrate the New Year together."
The castle was soon filled with singing and dancing, and the festivities were lively and joyous.
Meanwhile, outside the castle, the real lord pounded on the gate, shouting, "It’s me, open up! This is the lord’s command!"
But the guards at the gate, thinking he was just a suspicious person, drove him away, saying, "Get lost, you scoundrel!"
No one had really paid much attention to the lord’s face, so no one recognized him.
The only one who had any suspicion was the oldest, wisest retainer, but since anyone could become the lord and it wouldn’t make much difference, he didn’t worry too much about it.
Besides, he was too distracted by Ohana, who was now laughing and smiling by his side. "How adorable she is, hahaha," he thought, unable to take his eyes off her.
And from then on, everyone’s clothes at the castle became stained with food every day.
