(The Twin Cowboys)
アメリカの ミシガンしゅうに、ネッドと ドニーと いう、ふたごの 男の子が すんでいました。
In the state of Michigan, USA, there lived twin boys named Ned and Donnie.
ふたりは、にわで、カウボーイごっこを するのが だいすきでした。
The two of them loved to play cowboy games in their yard.
ある日、ドニーが いいました。「きょう、ぼくは、カウボーイの スティーブに なる。ネッドは？」
One day, Donnie said, "Today, I’m going to be Cowboy Steve. What about you, Ned?"
「じゃあ、ぼくは、カウボーイの ジムだ」と、ネッドは こたえました。
"Then I'll be Cowboy Jim," replied Ned.
「よし、ジム。いまから、おたずねものや、どうぶつを 見つけにいこう！」
"Alright, Jim. Let’s go find some wanted men or wild animals!"
ふたりは、にわの すみに ある、大きな 石に とびのると、どろぼうなどの おたずねものや、やせいの どうぶつがいないか、あたりを 見まわしました。
The two boys jumped onto a large rock in the corner of the yard, scanning around for any thieves or wild animals.
「ジム。ここ、オクラホマぼくじょうには、なにも いなさそうだ。ぼうけんに でかけるぞ！」と、ドニーが いいました。
"Jim, there’s nothing here on the Oklahoma Ranch. Let’s head out on an adventure!" declared Donnie.
ネッドと ドニーは、にわから、とおりへ でていきました。
Ned and Donnie left their yard and went out to the street.
とおりの かどまで くると、しんごうがあり、しんごうは、あかだったので、ふたりは、立ちどまりました。
When they got to the street corner, they stopped at a traffic light that was red.
ネッドと ドニーは、きょねんの たんじょう日から、しんごうを まもれば、じぶんたちだけで、どうろを わたってもいいと、おかあさんに いわれていました。
Since their last birthday, they had been told by their mother that they could cross the street by themselves as long as they obeyed the traffic lights.
もちろん、ふたりは、ちゃんと やくそくを まもりました。
Of course, the twins kept their promise.
しんごうが ない どうろは、わたりませんでしたし、しんごうがあれば、あおに なるまで じっとまって、わたるまえに、みぎと ひだりを よく たしかめるのです。
They didn’t cross roads without traffic lights, and when there was one, they waited patiently until it turned green and made sure to check both ways before crossing.
ネッドと ドニーは、みぎと ひだりを 見てみました。
Ned and Donnie looked right and left.
としとった うまが、ばしゃを ひっぱりながら、ぽっくり ぽっくりと、とおり すぎて いきます。
A slow, old horse pulling a wagon clopped along, passing in front of them.
しんごうが あおに なりました。
When the light turned green,
あとは なにも きていません。
and the coast was clear,
ふたりは、手を つないで、いそいで どうろを わたりました。
they held hands and hurried across the road.
どうろを わたるたびに、あたらしい ぼうけんが はじまるのです。
Every time they crossed a road, a new adventure began.
ネッドと ドニーは、しばらく まっすぐあるき、それから、かどを まがりました。
Ned and Donnie walked straight for a while, then turned a corner.
すると、アーケードの 商店街に つきました。
Soon, they arrived at the arcade shopping street,
そこは、おかあさんと、よく買いものに くるばしょでした。
a place they often visited with their mom to shop.
ふたりは、たまごうりばや、たまねぎうりばの まえを とおりすぎ、かぼちゃうりばと、いちごうりばの まえも、とおりすぎました。
They passed the egg stand, the onion stand, and even the pumpkin and strawberry stands.
それから、りんごうりばの まえまでくると、ふたりは 立ちどまり、大きな あかい りんごを 手に とって、おみせの おばさんに いいました。「これ、くださいな」
When they reached the apple stand, they stopped, picked up a big red apple, and said to the shop lady, "We’d like this, please."

「ありがとう。ふたつで 十セントです」と、りんごうりばの おばさんは こたえました。
"Thank you. Two apples for ten cents," the lady at the apple stand replied.
「あ、そっか.....」ネッドと ドニーは そういうと、見つめあいました。
"Oh, right..." Ned and Donnie looked at each other.
それから、りんごを もとの ばしょに そっと もどすと、そのまま いってしまおうと しました。
Then they gently returned the apples to their original place and started to walk away.
それを 見た りんごうりの おばさんが いいました。
「ちょっとまって。どうしたんだい？ おかねを もってないの？」
"Wait a moment. What’s wrong? You don’t have any money?" asked the apple stand lady after seeing them leaving.
ふたりは、だまって うなずきました。
The twins nodded silently.
「おかあさんは、どこ？」
"Where’s your mother?"
「おかあさんは いません。ぼくらだけで、ぼうけんしてるんだ」と、ドニーが いいました。
"She’s not here. We’re adventuring on our own," Donnie said.
「あら、ぼうけんしてるのね！」いちごうりの おばさんは、にっこりして いいました。
"Oh, you’re on an adventure!" the strawberry stand lady said, smiling.
「そういう ばあいは、とくべつ。ほら、もっていきなさい。おかねは いいから」
"In that case, here’s a special treat. Take these, no charge."
「ありがとうございます」
"Thank you!"
ネッドと ドニーは、おれいを いって、また でかけようと しました。
Ned and Donnie said, expressing their gratitude before setting off again.
そのとき、となりに いた、いちごうりの おばさんが 声を かけてきました。
Just then, the lady at the strawberry stand asked,
「あなたたち、お名まえは？」
"Hey, what are your names?"
「ぼくたち、カウボーイ」と、ドニーがいいました。
"We’re Cowboys," Donnie replied.
「そう、カウボーイなのね。それで、なんて 名まえの カウボーイ？」
"Oh, Cowboys! And what are your cowboy names?"
「ぼくは、カウボーイの スティーブ」と、ドニーは こたえました。
"I'm Cowboy Steve," Donnie answered.
「ぼくは、カウボーイの ジム」と、ネッドも こたえました。
"And I'm Cowboy Jim," Ned added.
そうして ふたりは、いってしまいました。
Then the two boys continued on their way.
「あれ？ おかしいわね」
"How strange,"
いちごうりの おばさんが、りんごうりの おばさんに いいました。
the strawberry stand lady said to the apple stand lady.
「あのふたご、いつも おかあさんと きてる子よねぇ。たしか、スティーブとか、ジムとかって 名まえじゃ なかった 気がするんだけど.....。なんて 名まえ だったかしら？」
"Those twins always come here with their mother, don’t they? And I don’t recall their names being Steve or Jim… What were their real names?"
ネッドと ドニーは、りんごを かじりながら、ぼうけんを つづけました。
Ned and Donnie, munching on their apples, continued their adventure.
ふたりは、ちがう とおりに でて、さらに あるいて いきました。すると、おとうさんが、はたらいている ビルを 見つけました。
They walked down another street and kept going until they spotted the building where their father worked.
ふたりは、町の ほうまで きていたのです。
They had made their way into town.
そのとき、ビルから、しらない おじさんが でてきました。
Just then, a man they didn’t recognize came out of the building.
ふたりと 目が あうと、にっこり ほほえんで 声を かけてきました。
He smiled and called out,
「やあ、カウボーイくん。おや？ 見たことある かおだね。名まえは、なんだったかな？」
"Well, hello there, Cowboys! Wait, do I know you two? What are your names?"
「こいつは、カウボーイの スティーブ」ネッドが、ドニーを ゆびさしながら いいました。
"He's Cowboy Steve," Ned said, pointing at Donnie.
「こいつは、カウボーイの ジム」ドニーが、ネッドを ゆびさしながら いいました。
"And he’s Cowboy Jim," Donnie said, pointing back at Ned.
「あれ、きみたちの おとうさんは、ここで はたらいて なかったかな？ たしか、その人の ふたごは、スティーブとか、ジムとかって 名なまえじゃ なかった 気がしたんだが.....」
"Wait a second, doesn’t your dad work here? I seem to remember he has twins named… well, not Steve or Jim," the man said.
ネッドと ドニーは、また あるきだしました。
Ned and Donnie kept walking.
すると、おみせが いくつも ならんでいる とおりにでました。ふたりは、おみせの ショーウィンドウを のぞいて まわりました。
They soon came to a street lined with shops and peeked into the windows.
とつぜん、ネッドが さけびました。「見ろ、スティーブ！インディアンだ！」
Suddenly, Ned exclaimed, "Look, Steve! It’s an Indian!"
ネッドは、にくやさんの ショーウィンドウを ゆびさしました。
He pointed at the butcher shop’s window.
「ほんとうだ！インディアンの はねかざりだ！」と、ドニーも さけびました。
"You're right, an Indian headdress!" Donnie shouted.
ふたりは、にくやさんに とびこみました。
The boys rushed into the butcher shop,
ところが、インディアンは いませんでした。
but there was no Indian there.
そこに いたのは、かなあみ小屋に はいった 三ばの 大きな ターキー でした。
Instead, they saw three large turkeys in a wire cage.
インディアンの はねかざりに 見えたのは、ターキーの おばねだったのです。
The feathers that had looked like an Indian headdress were actually the turkey’s tail feathers.
でも、ふたりは がっかりしませんでした。
But the twins weren’t disappointed.
ほんものの ターキーを 見るのも、たのしかったからです。
Seeing a real turkey was exciting too.
「ジム、いこう」ネッドは、にくやさんを でながら いいました。
"Let’s go, Jim," Ned said as they left the butcher shop.
「オクラホマぼくじょうへ かえろうぜ。おなかへった！」
"Back to Oklahoma Ranch. I’m hungry!"
ふたりは、とおりの かどを まがり、はしって いえへ むかいました。
They rounded a corner and ran toward home.
すると、とつぜん 目のまえに 大きな つのを はやした、シカが あらわれました！
Suddenly, a big deer with enormous antlers appeared in front of them!
ちかよって 見てみると、それは、ほんものの シカではなく、てつで できた おきものでした。
They got closer and realized it wasn’t a real deer but a statue made of metal.
それでも、ふたりは、めずらしそうに、しばらく シカを ながめました。
Still, the boys admired the deer for a while.
「よし、いこう。ジム」と、ネッドが いいました。
"Come on, Jim," Ned said.
「うまに のって、オクラホマぼくじょうまで、きょうそうだ！」
"Let’s race our horses back to Oklahoma Ranch!"
ふたりは、うまに のったつもりに なって、とおりを かけていき、またひとつ、かどを まがりました。
Pretending to ride horses, they raced down the street, turned another corner,
すると、あれ？ そこに あると おもっていた、さっきの アーケード商店街が ありません。
and… wait! The arcade shopping street they had just been at was gone!
まわりの いえにも、見おぼえが ありませんでした。
The houses around them looked unfamiliar.
ふと、足もとを 見ると、ドニーは、すなだまりに たっていました。
Donnie looked down at his feet.
「おい、スティーブ。どうやら おれたちは、ひろい さばくで、みちに まよったらしい」ドニーは、すなを けりあげながら いいました。
"Hey, Steve. It seems like we’ve gotten lost in a wide desert," he said, kicking up sand.
「ジム、そんなことは ない」と、ネッドが こたえました。
"Jim, that’s nonsense," Ned replied.
「こっちに いけば、オクラホマぼくじょうだ。こいよ。こんどは おたずねものが 見つかるかも しれないぜ」
"Oklahoma Ranch is this way. Follow me! Maybe we’ll find a wanted man this time."
と、そのとき、ネッドの 手に ピチョンと 雨つぶが おちてきました。
At that moment, a raindrop fell on Ned’s hand.
「あっ、あらしが くるぞ！ そうだ、あの山に のぼって 雨やどりを しよう」ネットは そういって、しらない人の いえを ゆびさしました。
"Uh-oh, a storm is coming! Let’s climb that mountain and find shelter," Ned said, pointing at a stranger’s house.
ネットと ドニーは、そのいえの、げんかんへと つづく かいだんを、山にみたてて のぼって いきました。
Ned and Donnie pretended the front steps were a mountain and climbed up.
それから こしを おろすと、げんかんの まえの やねの下で 雨やどりを しました。
Then they sat down and took cover under the porch roof.
そのころ、ネットと ドニーの おかあさんは、いえで おひるごはんの ブルーベリーパイを やこうと していました。
Meanwhile, at home, their mother was preparing to bake blueberry pie for lunch.
パイを ちょうど オーブンに いれようとしたとき、リリーンと、でんわが なりました。
Just as she was about to put the pie in the oven, the phone rang.
でんわは、さいきん、ひっこししてきた ばかりの、おむかえの 人から でした。
It was their new neighbor calling.
「あ、グレイさんですか？」と、おむかえの 人は いいました。「あの、とつぜんですが、おたくの ぼうやたち、まいごに なって おられません？」
"Hello, Mrs. Gray? Sorry to bother you, but are your boys missing by any chance?" asked the neighbor.
「いいえ。どうしてです？」と、おかあさんは こたえました。
"No, why do you ask?" their mother replied.
「さっき、わたしの 母から でんわが あったんです。母は、町の ほうに すんでいるんですけど、いま、母の いえの げんかんの まえに、ふたごの きょうだいが すわってるって いうんです。スティーブと ジム、という子らしいんですけど」
"Well, my mother lives in town, and she just called to say there are twin boys sitting on her front porch. She says their names are Steve and Jim."
「あら、それは うちの ふたごじゃ ありませんわ。うちの子は、ネットと ドニーと いいますの。それに ふたりは、ちかくの ジェイニーと いう子の にわで、あそんでいる はずですから。わざわざ、おでんわ くださって、ありがとうございました」おかあさんは そういって、でんわをきりました。
"Oh, that’s not my boys. My boys are named Ned and Donnie, and they’re supposed to be playing in Jenny’s yard nearby. But thank you for calling," she said, hanging up.
そのあと、おかあさんは、やさいを 買いに アーケードの商店街へ でかけました。
Afterward, their mother went to the arcade shopping street to buy vegetables.
商店街につくと、りんごうりの おばさんに 声を かけられました。
When she arrived, the apple stand lady greeted her.
「あっ、おくさん、ごぞんじ？ここらに、おたくの ぼうやと おなじ としごろの ふたごの 男の子が いるって。たしか 名まえが、スティーブと ジムって いうの。」
"Hi there! Did you hear? There are twin boys around here, just your boys’ age, named Steve and Jim."
「ええ、しってるわ」と、おかあさんは こたえました。
"Yes, I’ve heard," their mother replied.
つぎに、いちごうりばの おばさんに 声を かけられました。
Next, the strawberry stand lady spoke to her.
「あっ、おくさん。さっき わたし、おたくの ぼうやと そっくりの ふたごを 見たのよ。たしか 名まえは.....」
"You know, I saw twin boys who look just like yours earlier. Their names were…"
「スティーブと ジム、でしょ？」おかあさんは、わらって こたえました。「その子たちの ことなら、わたしも きいたわ」
"Steve and Jim, right?" their mother said, laughing. "I’ve heard about them too."
おかあさんが、やさいを 買って いえに かえると、おとうさんが おひるごはんを たべに、かいしゃから もどってきました。
When she returned home, their father had come back from work for lunch.
「そういえば、きょう、ぼくの かいしゃの人が、スティーブと ジムとかいう、ふたごの 男の子に あったらしいよ」と、おとうさんは いいました。「どうも、うちの子たちと、おなじ としごろ みたいなんだ」
"By the way, someone at work said they met twin boys named Steve and Jim today," he mentioned. "They seemed about the same age as our boys."
「ええ、わたしも きいた」と、おかあさんは いいました。
"Yes, I heard that too," she replied.
「いつか、ネットと ドニーが、そのスティーブと ジムって子たちに、あえたらいいわね」
"Wouldn’t it be niec if Ned and Donnie ever met these Steve and Jim twins?"
「ところで、うちの子たちは どこだい？ 雨が ふってきたよ」
"But where are our boys? It’s starting to rain," their father said.
「むかえに いって きましょうか。あの子たち、ジェイニーと あそんで いるはずですから」
"Should I go get them? They’re supposed to be with Jenny," she said.
ところが、おかあさんは、しんぱいそうな かおで、ジェイニーの いえから もどってきました。
But she came back worried, saying,
「あの子たち、ジェイニーの いえに いってないんですって。ジェイニーは、あさから あっていない っていうの。あの子たち、どこへ いったのかしら？」
"They haven’t been to Jenny’s. She hasn’t seen them all day. Where could they be?"
「まあ、じきに かえってくるよ」おとうさんは、しんぶんを ひらきながら いいました。
"Don’t worry. I’m sure they’ll come back soon," their father reassured her.
それから しばらくたっても、ネットと ドニーは、かえって きませんでした。
But even after some time, the boys didn’t return,
そこで おとうさんは、とおりに でて、あちこち さがして みましたが、ふたりは、どこにも いませんでした。
so he went out to look for them.
おとうさんが いえに もどってくると、おかあさんは、ふあんそうな かおで まどの そとを ながめていました。
When he came back, their mother was anxiously staring out the window.
「雨が ひどくなってきたわ。町の ほうに いるって いってた スティーブと ジムって子たちも、だいじょうぶかしら.....」
"The rain’s getting worse. I hope those boys Steve and Jim are safe," she said.
おかあさんは、しばらく まどの そとを ながめていましたが、とつぜん、タンッと 足を ふみならすと、おもいたったかのように 立ちあがりました。
Suddenly, she stomped her foot.
「とにかく なにか しなきゃ。まず、スティーブと ジムって 子たちが、だいじょうぶ だったのか、きいてみましょう」
"We have to do something! Let’s check on those boys first,"
おかあさんは、さっき でんわを くれた、おむかいの 人に でんわをして、おむかいの 人の おかあさんの 名まえと でんわばんごうを ききました。
she said, and called the neighbor for details.
おむかいの 人の おかあさんは、ヤングさんと いいました。おかあさんは、さっそく ヤングさんに でんわを しました。
She learned the other woman’s name, Mrs. Young, and phoned her.
「あ、ヤングさんの おたくですか？」と、おかあさんは いいました。
「おたくの げんかんの まえに いる、ふたごの 男の子に ついて、ちょっと おうかがい したいのですが」
"Hello, Mrs. Young? About those twin boys on your porch…"
「もう、げんかんの まえには いませんよ」と、ヤングさんは いいました。
"They’re not there anymore," Mrs. Young said.
「あら。では、いま、どこに？」
"Oh, then, where are they now?"
「うちの あたたかい だいどころに いますわ。雨の なか、ずっと そとに ほうって おけませんもの」
"They’re in my warm kitchen. I couldn’t leave them outside in the rain."
「そうですか。それで ヤングさん、じつは、うちにも ふたごが おりまして、そのふたりが、どうやら まいごに なった みたいなんです。うちの子は、ネットと ドニーと いうんですが、そこに いる子たちは、ネットと ドニーと いう名まえじゃ ないんですね？」
"Oh, thank goodness! Actually, my twins, Ned and Donnie, seem to be missing. Those boys aren’t named Ned and Donnie, are they?"
「ええ、あなたの ふたごじゃ ないと おもいますよ。だって、この子たち、じぶんたちの 名まえは、スティーブと ジムって いってますからね。それに、オクラホマに すんでるって。たぶん、この子たち、オクラホマから ミシガンへ、あそびに きたんじゃ ないかしら。ですから、あなたの お子さんじゃないと…」
"No, they said their names are Steve and Jim. And they claim they’re from Oklahoma."
「オクラホマ！？」とつぜん、おかあさんは さけびました。
"Oklahoma!" the mother shouted.
「ヤングさん、いま、オクラホマって、おっしゃいました？それで、その子たちの 名まえは、スティーブと ジムって いうんですね？ヤングさん、そのスティーブと ジムって、あおい ジャケットに、あかい カウボーイハットを かぶってません？あら！いま、その子たち、ちかくで カウボーイの うたを うたってます？」
"Wait! Did you say they’re wearing blue jackets and red cowboy hats? Aren't they singing cowboy song nearby now?"
「え、ええ。たしかに あおいジャケットに、あかい カウボーイハットを かぶっていますよ。それにいま、カウボーイの うたを うたってますが、それがなにか…」
"Yes, they are, and they’re singing cowboy songs," Mrs. Young confirmed.
「それ、うちの子です！」と、おかあさんは さけびました。
"Those are my boys!" she exclaimed.
「どうしてです？だって、ネットと ドニーと いう名まえじゃ ないですし、オクラホマに すんでるって、いってるんですよ？」
"But they told me their names are Steve and Jim, and that they live in Oklahoma."
でも、おかあさんは、それいじょう なにも こたえず、ヤングさんの いえの じゅうしょを きくと、「どうか、そのまま おまちください。すぐに そちらへ まいりますから」と いって、でんわを きりました。
Their mother just asked for the address and hung up, saying, "Please stay with them. We’re on our way!"
おかあさんは、おとうさんに いいました。
The mother said to the father.
「ヤングさんの いえまで 車で いきましょう。うちの子たちは、そこよ。」
"Let's drive to Mrs Young's house. Our kids are there."
おとうさんは、おかあさんの あとを おいかけながら いいました。
The father chased after the mother, saying,
「でも、その子たちは、スティーブと ジムって いうんだろう？オクラホマに すんでる」
"But they said their names were Steve and Jim, and that they live in Oklahoma."
おかあさんは、わらって こたえました。
The mother smiled and replied,
「まあ、まあ。いいから、ついてきて」
"Oh, come on. Just follow me."
おとうさんと おかあさんが、ヤングさんの いえに つきました。
When they arrived at Mrs. Young's house,
そして、だいどころを のぞいてみると、そこに いたのは、やっぱり ネットと ドニーでした。
they peeked into the kitchen, and there they were—Ned and Donnie!
ふたりは、ちょうど、ぎゅうにゅうを のんでいる ところでした。
The two boys were just drinking some milk.
「あれ！ ネットと ドニーじゃないか！」と、おとうさんは さけびました。
"Ned and Donnie!" their father shouted.
ふたりは、いすから とびおりると、わらいながら おかあさんと おとうさんの もとへ はしって いきました。
The boys jumped down from their chairs and ran to their parents, laughing.
「もちろん、ぼくたちは、ネットと ドニーさ！」と、ふたりは さけびました。
"Of course, we're Ned and Donnie!" they called out.
ヤングさんは、なにが なにやら、ちんぷんかんぷんと いった かおで いいました。
Mrs. Young, still looking confused, said,
「でも、さっき、オクラホマに すんでるって、いってなかった？それに、じぶんたちは、スティーブと ジムだって」
"But didn’t they say they lived in Oklahoma? And that they were called Steve and Jim?"
「ぼくらは、カウボーイの スティーブと ジムさ」と、ネットが いいました。
"We're Cowboys Steve and Jim," Ned explained.
「ヤングさん」と、おかあさんは いいました。「ネットと ドニーは、いつだって、じぶんたちの 名まえを ただしく いえますし、すんでいるところが どこかって ことを、ちゃんと しっていますわ。でも、こと、カウボーイごっこを してるときだけは、じぶんたちは、オクラホマぼくじょうに すんでいるとか、じぶんたちは、ゆうかんな カウボーイの スティーブと ジムとか、ジャックとチャックとか、そんなふうに なりきって しまいますの。」
The mother added, "Ned and Donnie always know their real names and where they live. But when they play cowboy games, they become Steve and Jim or sometimes even Jack and Chuck, fully pretending to be brave cowboys from Oklahoma Ranch."
「あら、そうなの.....」ヤングさんは、そう こたえたものの、まだ あたまが こんがらがった ような かおを していました。
"Oh, I see..." Mrs. Young replied, though she still looked a bit bewildered.
「ねえ、うちに かえろうよ。おなか へった」と、ドニーが いいました。
"Hey, let’s go home. I’m hungry," Donnie said.
「この子たちの めんどうを 見てくださって、ほんとうに ありがとうございました。」
"Thank you so much for looking after them,"
おかあさんが、ヤングさんに おれいを いうと、みんなで そろって 「さようなら」と、あいさつをし、車に のって、いえに かえりました。
After the mother said to Mrs. Young, they all said goodbye and got into the car to head home.
それから、二しゅうかんが たちました。
Two weeks later,
きょうは、ネットと ドニーの たんじょうびです。
it was Ned and Donnie's birthday.
あさ、ふたりは、じぶんたちの へやで、あたらしい カウボーイの いしょうを 見つけました。
In the morning, they found new cowboy outfits in their room.
それは、おかあさんからの プレゼントで、プレゼントには、てがみが ついて いました。
The gift was from their mother, and there was a letter attached.
その てがみを おとうさんが、よんで くれました。
Their father read the letter out loud:
