第1章 よていひょう YOTEIHYOU
Chapter 1: The Schedule
ある あさの ことです。がまがえるくんは、ベッドの上に おきあがっていました。
One morning, Toad was sitting up in bed.
「 ぼくには する ことが いっぱい あるんだ 。」がまくんは いいました。
"I have so many things to do," said Toad.
「みんな 一まいの かみに かいてしまおうっと。そうすりゃ おぼえられるもの。」
"I'll write them all down on a piece of paper. That way, I won't forget."
がまくんは かみに こう かきました。
Toad took a piece of paper and wrote:
きょう する こと
Things to Do Today
それから こうかきました。
Then he wrote:
あさ おきる
Wake up
「これは もう しちゃったと。」といって がまくんは けしました。
"Well, I've already done that," said Toad, and crossed it off.
それから がまくんは、かみに いろいろな ことを かきました。
Then Toad wrote more things on his schedule:
あさごはんを たべる
Eat breakfast
ふくを きる
Get dressed
かえるくんの いえへいく
Go to Frog’s house
かえるくんと おさんぽ する
Take a walk with Frog
ひるごはんを たべる
Eat lunch
おひるね する
Take a nap
かえるくんと あそぶ
Play with Frog
ばんごはんを たべる
Eat dinner
おねんね
Go to bed
「ほら できた。」がまくんが いいました。
"There! All done," said Toad.
「これで ぼくの 一日の しごとは みんな かけた。」
"Now my whole day's work is written down."
がまくんは ベッドから でて、ごはんを たべました。
Toad got out of bed and ate breakfast.
それから よていひょうを けしました。
Then he crossed off:
あさごはんを たべる
Eat breakfast
がまくんは ようふくだんすから ふくを だして きました。
Toad took clothes from his wardrobe and got dressed.
それから よていひょうを けしました。
Then he crossed off:
ふくを きる
Get dressed
がまくんは ポケットの 中に よていひょうを いれました。
Toad put the schedule into his pocket.
ドアを あけて、あさの そとへ でて いきました。
He opened the door and stepped out into the morning.
すぐに かえるくんの いえの げんかんに つきました。
Soon, he arrived at Frog's front door.
ポケットから よていひょうを だして、けしました。
He took the schedule out of his pocket and crossed off:
かえるくんの いえへ いく
Go to Frog’s house
ドアを コツコツ。
Knock knock.
「 やあ こんにちは。」かえるくんが いいました。
"Hey, good morning," said Frog.
「ぼくの よていひょうを 見てくれよ。」がまくんが いいました。
"Look at my schedule!" said Toad.
「おや そう、」 かえるくんが いいました。
"Oh, I see," said Frog.
「 そりゃ たいへん けっこうだね。」がまくんが いいました。
"It’s very fine," said Toad.
「ぼくの よていひょうではね、ぼくたちが おさんぽ するように なってるよ。」
"My schedule says that we’re going to take a walk together."
「いいとも」と、かえるくんは いいました。「いつでも いくよ」
"Sure thing," said Frog. "Let’s go anytime!"
ふたりは、とおくへ おさんぽに でかけました。
The two of them set off for a long walk.
それから、がまくんは また よていひょうを ポケットから だして、けしました。
Then Toad pulled the schedule from his pocket again and crossed off:
かえるくんと おさんぽ する
Take a walk with Frog
ちょうど そのときです。つよい かぜが ふいて きました。
Just then, a strong wind began to blow.
かぜは がまくんの 手から よていひょうを ふきとばしました。
The wind snatched the schedule right out of Toad’s hand.
「わっ、 たすけて！」がまくんが さけびました。
"Ahh! Help!" cried Toad.
「ぼくの よていひょうが とんでっちゃうよ。あれがないと、どうして いいか わかんないよ。」
"My schedule is flying away! Without it, I don’t know what to do!"
「はやく！」かえるくんが いいました。
"Hurry!" said Frog.
「はしってって つかまえようぜ。」
"Let’s run after it!"
「だめだ！」がまくんが 大きなこえで いいました。
"I can’t!" shouted Toad loudly.
「そんな こと ぼく できないんだ。」
"I just can’t do something like that!"
「なぜ できないんだい？」かえるくんが たずねました。
"Why not?" asked Frog.
「だって、」がまくんが なきごえで さけびました。
"Because," cried Toad, sobbing,
「よていひょうを おっかけるなんて、ぼく よていひょうに かかなかったことなんだもの。」
"Chasing after my schedule wasn’t written on my schedule!"
かえるくんが よていひょうを おっかけました。
Frog ran after the schedule.
かえるくんは いくつも おかをこえ、ぬまちを こえて、はしりました。
He ran over many hills and through swamps.
でも、よていひょうは どんどん とんで いってしまいました。
But the schedule kept flying farther and farther away.
とうとう かえるくんは がまくんの ところへ もどって きました。
Finally, Frog came back to Toad.
「わるいけど、」あえぎあえぎ かえるくんが いいました。
"Sorry," gasped Frog, out of breath,
「きみの よていひょう つかまえる ことが できなかったんだ。」
"I couldn’t catch your schedule."
「ちえっ、」がまくんが いいました。
"Ugh," said Toad.
「ぼく よていひょうに かいて あったこと 一つも おもいだせないんだ。ぼく ただ ここに すわって、なんにも しないでいるより しかたないんだ。」がまくんがいいました。
"I can’t remember a single thing that was written on it. All I can do now is sit here and do nothing."
がまくんは すわって、いるだけで なにも しませんでした。
So Toad sat there, doing nothing.
かえるくんも がまくんと いっしょに すわっていました。
Frog sat with him.
だいぶ たってから、かえるくんが いいました。
After a long while, Frog said,
「がまくん、もう 日がくれるよ。いえへ かえって ねなくちゃいけない ときだよ。」
"Toad, the sun is setting. It’s time to go home and sleep."
「ねるんだって！」がまくんが 大きな こえを だしました。
"Sleep!" shouted Toad.
「それは よていひょうの いちばん おしまいに かいて あった ことだよ。」
"That was the last thing written on my schedule!"
がまくんは ぼうで じめんに こう かきました。
Toad picked up a stick and wrote on the ground:
おねんね
Go to bed
それから けしました。
Then he crossed it off:
おねんね
Go to bed
「さあ、これでよし。」がまくんが いいました。
"There, that’s good," said Toad.
「これで ぼくの 一日の しごとは ぜんぶ けしたよ。」
"Now I’ve crossed off everything on my list for the day."
「ぼく うれしいよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"I’m happy for you," said Frog.
それから ふたりは ぐっすり ねむりました。
Then the two friends fell fast asleep.

第2章 はやくめをだせ HAYAKU MEWO DASE
Chapter 2: Hurry Up and Sprout!
かえるくんは じぶんの にわに いました。
Frog was in his garden.
がまくんが とおりかかりました。
Toad came walking by.
「かえるくん、きみは すばらしい おにわを もっているんだなあ。」がまくんが いいました。
"Frog, you have a wonderful garden," said Toad.
「うん。」かえるくんが いいました。「いい にわさ。でも つくるのが たいへん だったよ。」
"Yes," said Frog. "It’s a good garden. But it was very hard work to make it so."
「ぼくにも、にわが あったら いいなあ。」がまくんが いいました。
"I wish I had a garden," said Toad.
すると、かえるくんが いいいました。「ここに 花の たねがあるよ。じめんに まけば、じきに きみの にわが できるよ。」
Frog said, "Here are some flower seeds. Plant them in the ground, and soon you will have a garden too."
「じきって、どの くらい かかるの？」がまくんが ききました。
"How soon?" asked Toad.
「すぐ じきさ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"Quite soon," said Frog.
がまくんは はしって いえへ かえりました。
Toad ran home.
花の たねを まきました。
He planted the flower seeds.
「さあ、たねよ。」がまくんは いいました。「大きく なあれ。」
"Now seeds," said Toad, "start growing!"
がまくんが 二、三ど いったり きたり しました。
Toad walked up and down a few times.
たねたちは 大きく なりません。
But the seeds didn’t grow.
がまくんは かおを じめんに ぐっと ちかづけました。そして 大ごえで いいました。
Toad put his face very close to the ground and shouted in a loud voice:
「さあ たねよ 大きく なあれ！」
"Now seeds, start growing!"
がまくんは もう 一ど じめんを 見つめました。
Toad stared at the ground again.
たねたちは 大きくなりません。
But the seeds still didn’t grow.
がまくんは かおを もっと もっと じめんに ちかづけて さけびました。
Toad brought his face even closer to the ground and yelled:
「さあ たねよ 大きく なあれ！」
"NOW SEEDS, START GROWING!"
かえるくんが みちを 大いそぎで はしって やってきました。
Frog came running quickly down the road.
「この さわぎは いったい なんだい？」かえるくんが たずねました。
"What’s all this noise about?" asked Frog.
「ぼくの たねったら 大きくなって くれないんだ。」がまくんが いいました。
"My seeds aren’t growing!" said Toad.
「大きな こえを だしすぎるんだよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"You’re shouting too much," said Frog.
「かわいそうに たねたちは おっかなくて 大きく なれないんだ。」
"The poor seeds are probably too scared to grow."
「ぼくの たねたち おっかなくて 大きく なれないの？」がまくんが たずねました。
"My seeds... too scared to grow?" asked Toad.
「そりゃそうさ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"That’s right," said Frog.
「二、三日 ほうって おいてごらんよ。日を あてて 雨に うたせて やりなよ。じきに きみの たねたちは 大きく なりはじめるよ。」
"Leave them alone for two or three days. Give them sunshine and let them get rained on. Soon your seeds will start to grow."
その ばん。がまくんは まどから そとを ながめました。
That night, Toad looked out of his window.
「ちぇっ！」がまくんは いいました。
"Bah!" said Toad.
「ぼくのたね 大きくならないや。きっと くらいのが こわいんだ。」がまくんは なん本も ろうそくを もって にわに でました。
"My seeds still aren’t growing. They’re probably scared of the dark." So Toad took several candles and went out to the garden.
「おはなしを よんで あげるからね。」がまくんが いいました。
"I’ll read you a story," said Toad.
「そう すりゃ こわく なくなるだろ。」
"That’ll help you not be afraid."
がまくんは たねたちに ながい おはなしを よんで やりました。
Toad read a long story to his seeds.
つぎの日、一日じゅう たねたちに うたを うたって やりました。
The next day, he sang songs to them all day long.
その つぎの日も 一日じゅう たねたちに しを よんで やりました。
The day after that, he recited poetry for them all day long.
その つぎの日も 一日じゅう たねたちに おんがくを きかせて やりました。
The day after that, he played music for them all day long.
がまくんは じめんを 見つめました。
Toad stared down at the ground.
たねたちは まだ 大きくなりません。
But the seeds still didn’t grow.
「ぼく どう したら いいだろ？」がまくんが さけびました。「きっと これ せかいじゅうで いちばん こわがりやの たねなんだ。」
"What should I do next?" cried Toad. "These must be the most frightened seeds in the whole world!"
それから がまくんは ぐったり つかれて ねむって しまいました。
Finally, Toad became so tired that he fell asleep.
「がまくん がまくん おきなよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"Toad! Toad! Wake up!" said Frog.
「きみの にわを 見てごらんよ！」がまくんは にわを 見つめました。
"Look at your garden!" Toad looked at his garden.
小さな みどりいろの くさが じめんから のびています。
Small green sprouts were coming up out of the ground.
「ああ、とうとう。」がまくんは さけびました。
"Oh, finally!" shouted Toad.
「ぼくのたね、おっかながる こと やめて 大きくなりだしたんだ。」
"My seeds have stopped being afraid and they’ve started to grow!"
「いま きみにも、いい にわが できるところだよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"Now you’re going to have a nice garden too," said Frog.
「うん、そうだ、」がまくんが いいました。
"Yes, that’s true," said Toad.
「でも かえるくん。きみの いう とおりだよ。とても たいへんな しごとだったよ。」
"But Frog… you were right. It really was very hard work."

第3章 クッキー COOKIE
Chapter 3: Cookies
がまくんが クッキーを つくりました。
Frog made some cookies.
「この クッキー とても いい においが するよ。」がまくんが いいました。
“These cookies smell really good,” said Frog.
一つ たべました。
He ate one.
「しかも あじは もっと いいよ。」
“And they taste even better,” he said.
がまくんは かえるくんの いえへ かけて いきました。
Frog ran over to Toad’s house.
「かえるくん、かえるくん！」がまくんが さけびました。
“Toad! Toad!” shouted Frog.
「この ぼくが つくった クッキー たべて ごらんよ。」
“Try these cookies I just made!”
かえるくんは 一つ たべました。
Toad ate one.
「これは いままでに たべた ことも ないような おいしい クッキーだ！」かえるくんが いいました。
“These are the best cookies I’ve ever eaten!” said Toad.
ふたりは つぎつぎに たくさん たべました。
The two of them kept eating one after another.
「ねえ、がまくん。きみも わかってるだろう。」かえるくんは 口いっぱい クッキーを ほおばりながら いいました。
“Hey, Frog. You know…” said Toad, his mouth full of cookies,
「もう たべるの やめなくちゃ いけないと おもうな。そうしないと じきに びょうきに なるよ。」
“We really should stop eating these. If we don’t, we’re going to get sick.”
「きみの いうとおりさ。」がまくんが いいました。
“You’re right,” said Frog.
「ぼくたち もう 一つだけ たべて、それから やめようよ。」
“Let’s eat just one more, and then stop.”
ふたりは もう 一つだけ クッキーを たべました。
They each ate just one more cookie.
おかしばには たくさんの クッキーが のこっていました。
There were still lots of cookies left in the bowl.
「かえるくん、」がまくんが いいました。
“Toad,” said Frog,
「ぼくたち ほんとに もう 一つだけ たべて、それから やめようよ。」
“Let’s really just eat one more, and then stop for real.”
ふたりは ほんとに もう 一つだけ たべました。
So they really ate just one more.
「ぼくたち たべるのを やめなくっちゃ！」がまくんは また また 一つ たべて、さけびました。
“We really need to stop eating now!” shouted Frog, as he ate yet another cookie.
「うん、そうだ。」かえるくんは クッキーに 手を のばしながら いいました。
“Yeah, we do,” said Toad, reaching for another one.
「ぼくたちには いしりょくが いるよ。」
“We need willpower!”
「いしりょくって なんの こと？」がまくんが たずねました。
“What’s willpower?” asked Frog.
「いしりょくって いうのはね、ほんとに したいと おもって いることを しないで がまんする ことさ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Willpower is trying hard not to do something you really want to do,” said Toad.
「きみの いってる ことは この クッキーを みんな たべて しまわないように する ことかい？」がまくんが たずねました。
“So you mean, willpower is what stops us from eating all these cookies?” asked Frog.
「その とおり。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Exactly,” said Toad.
かえるくんは クッキーを はこの中に いれました。
Toad put the cookies into a box.
「ほらね。」かえるくんが いいました。「こうすれば、ぼくたち もう クッキーを たべないで すむよ。」
“There,” said Toad, “Now we won’t eat any more cookies.”
「でも、はこを あければ たべられるよ。」がまくんが いいました。
“But,” said Frog, “If we open the box, we can still eat them.”
「そりゃ そうだ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“That’s true,” said Toad.
かえるくんは はこの まわりを ひもで しばりました。
Toad tied string all around the box.
「ほらね、」かえるくんが いいました。「こうすれば、ぼくたち もう クッキーを たべないで すむよ。」
“There,” said Toad, “Now we won’t eat any more cookies.”
「でも、ひもを きって はこを あければ いいさ。」がまくんが いいました。
“But,” said Frog, “If we cut the string and open the box, we can still eat them.”
「ほんとに そうだ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“That’s true,” said Toad.
かえるくんは はしごを もってきました。たかい たなの 上に はこを おきました。
Toad brought out a ladder and put the box high up on a tall shelf.
「ほらね、」かえるくんが いいました。「こうすれば、ぼくたち もう クッキーを たべないで すむよ。」
“There,” said Toad, “Now we won’t eat any more cookies.”
「でも、はしごに のぼってさ、たなから はこを おろして、ひもを きって、はこを あければ いいさ。」がまくんが いいました。
“But,” said Frog, “If we climb the ladder, take down the box, cut the string, and open it, we can still eat them.”
「そりゃ そうだ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“That’s true,” said Toad.
かえるくんは はしごに のぼって、はこを たなから おろしました。ひもを きって、はこを あけました。
Toad climbed the ladder, took down the box, cut the string, and opened it.
かえるくんは はこを そとへ もちだしました。
Then Toad carried the box outside.
大きな こえで いいました。「おおい とりくんたち。クッキーが あるよ！」
And with a loud voice, he shouted, “Hey birds! There are cookies here!”
とりたちは あっちこっちから やって きました。
Birds came flying from all around.
一つのこらず クッキーを くちばに くわえて とんで いきました。
Each bird took a cookie in its beak and flew away.
「さて ぼくたちには もうクッキーは ないよ。」がまくんが かなしそうに いいました。
“Now we have no more cookies,” said Frog sadly.
「一つも なしさ。」
“Not even one.”
「うん、そうだ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Yup, that’s right,” said Toad.
「でも、ぼくたちには ものすごく たくさん いしりょくが できたよ。」
“But now we have lots and lots of willpower!”
「かえるくん、いしりょくは ぜんぶ きみに あげるよ。」がまくんが いいました。
“Toad,” said Frog, “You can have all my willpower.”
「ぼくは これから うちへ かえって おかしを つくるよ。」
“I’m going home now to bake some snacks.”

第4章 こわくないやい KOWAKUNAIYAI
Chapter 4: We're Not Scared!
かえるくんと がまくんは いっしょに 本を よんで いました。
Frog and Toad were reading a book together.
「この 本の 中に でてくる 人たちは、ゆうかんだなあ。」がまくんが いいました。
"The people in this book are so brave," said Toad.
「りゅうや きょじんと たたかって いるのに ちっとも こわがらないんだ。」
"They fight dragons and giants, and they’re not scared at all."
「ぼくたち ゆうきが あるかしら？」かえるくんが いいました。
"I wonder if we’re brave too?" said Frog.
かえるくんと がまくんは かがみの 中を のぞきこみました。
Frog and Toad looked at themselves in the mirror.
「ぼくたち ゆうき ありそうに みえるぜ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"We look like we might be brave," said Frog.
「うん。でも ほんとに あるかしら？」がまくんが たずねました。
"Yeah, but are we really?" asked Toad.
ふたりは そとへ でました。
The two of them went outside.
「この山に のぼって みよう。」かえるくんが いいました。
"Let’s try climbing this mountain," said Frog.
「そうしたら ぼくらが ゆうきが あるかどうか きっと わかるよ。」
"Then we’ll know for sure if we’re brave or not."
かえるくんは ぴょんぴょん いわを こえて とんでいきました。
Frog hopped quickly over the rocks, jumping ahead.
がまくんは ぜいぜい いきを きらしながら、あとを おいました。
Toad followed, out of breath, trying to keep up.
ふたりは くらい ほらあなへ きました。
They came to a dark cave.
大きな へびが 一ぴき ほらあなから でてきました。
A big snake slithered out from the cave.
「やあ、こんにちは、ごちそうくん」へびは ふたりを 見て そういいました。
"Well, hello there, my little snacks," said the snake, staring at them.
大きな 口を あけました。
It opened its huge mouth wide.
ふたりは とびはねながら にげました。
The two friends jumped and ran away as fast as they could.
がまくんは がたがた ふるえています。
Toad was shaking all over.
「ぼく こわくなんか ないやい！」がまくんは どなりました。
"I’m not scared at all!" shouted Toad.
ふたりは どんどん 上へ あがって いきました。
They climbed higher and higher up the mountain.
すると 大きな おとが きこえてきました。
Then they heard a loud rumbling sound.
たくさんの 大きな 石が 山を ころげおちて きました。
A bunch of big rocks came tumbling down the mountain towards them.
「なだれだ！」がまくんが さけびました。
"It’s a landslide!" shouted Toad.
ふたりは とびはねながら にげました。
The two friends jumped and ran away again.
かえるくんは がたがた ふるえています。
Now Frog was shaking all over.
「ぼく こはくなんか ないやい！」かえるくんは どなりました。
"I’m not scared at all!" shouted Frog.
ふたりは 山の てっぺんまで きました。
They finally reached the top of the mountain.
すると、たかの かげが ふたりに むかって ちかづいて きました。
Suddenly, a hawk’s shadow swooped down towards them.
ふたりは いわの 下へ とびこみました。
They dove under a rock for cover.
たかは とんで いって しまいました。
The hawk flew away.
「ぼくたち こわくなんか ないやい！」ふたりは いっしょに きいきいごえで さけびました。
"We’re not scared at all!" they both shouted together in high-pitched voices.
それから 大いそぎで 山を かけおりました。
Then they hurried down the mountain as fast as they could.
なだれに あった ところも はしり すぎました。
They ran past the spot where they had seen the landslide.
へびに あった ところも はしり すぎました。
They ran past the cave where they had met the snake.
がまくんの いえまで はしり つづけました。
And they kept running all the way to Toad’s house.
「かえるくん、ぼくは きみの ような ゆうかんな ともだちが いて うれしいよ。」がまくんが いいました。
"Frog, I’m glad I have such a brave friend like you," said Toad.
がまくんは ベッドに とびこむと あたまから ふとんを かぶりました。
Toad jumped into bed and pulled the blanket over his head.
「ぼくだって がまくん、きみの ような ゆうきのある 人と しりあいに なれて しあわせだよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
"And I’m happy," said Frog, "that I’ve gotten to know someone as courageous as you, Toad."
かえるくんは おしいれの 中に とびこんで、ドアを しめました。
Frog jumped into the closet and closed the door.
がまくんは ベッドの 中に いましたし、かえるくんは おしいれの 中です。
Toad stayed in bed. Frog stayed inside the closet.
ふたりとも とても ゆうかんだと おもいながら ながいこと じっと して いました。
Both of them sat very still for a long time, thinking just how brave they really were.

第５章 かまくんのゆめ GAMAKUN NO YUME
Chapter 5: Gama-kun's Dream
がまくんは ねむって いました。
Gama-kun was sleeping.
ゆめを 見ていたのです。
He was having a dream.
がまくんは ぶたいいしょうを きて、ぶたいに 立って いました。
Gama-kun was wearing a stage costume and standing on a stage.
がまくんは くらい おきゃくさまの せきの ほうを のぞいて 見ました。
He peeked out towards the seats in the dark audience.
かえるくんが すわって いました。
Kaeru-kun was sitting there.
とおくの ほうから きこえてくる へんてこな こえが いいました。
From far away, a strange voice called out:
「せかい一 すばらしい がまがえるどのを ごしょうかい いたします！」
“Presenting the most wonderful toad in the world—Gama-kun!”
がまくんは ていねいな おじぎを しました。
Gama-kun gave a polite bow.
「フレー フレー がまくん！」かえるくんが そう さけぶに つれて かえるくんの からだは 小さく なって いくように 見えました。
“Hip hip hooray for Gama-kun!” As Kaeru-kun shouted, he seemed to shrink smaller and smaller.
「これから がまがえるどのは すばらしく じょうずな ピアノの えんそうを いたします。」へんな こえが いいました。
“Next, Gama-kun will perform a magnificent piano recital,” the strange voice announced.
がまくんは ピアノを ひきました。
Gama-kun played the piano.
一かいも まちがえませんでした。
He didn’t make a single mistake.
「かえるくん。」がまくんは 大きなこえで いいました。「きみは こんなに うまく ピアノが ひけるかい？」
“Kaeru-kun!” Gama-kun said in a loud voice. “Can you play the piano this well?”
「いいや。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Nope,” Kaeru-kun replied.
がまくんには かえるくんが また 一だんと 小さく なったように 見えました。
Gama-kun thought Kaeru-kun looked even smaller than before.
「がまがえるどのは、こんどは たかく はった つなの上を あるきます。かれは けっして おちません。」へんてこな こえが いいました。
“Now, Gama-kun will walk across a high tightrope! He will never fall,” said the strange voice.
がまくんは たかい つなの 上を あるきました。
Gama-kun walked along the high rope.
「かえるくん。」がまくんが 大きな こえで いいました。「こんな げいとうが できるかい？」
“Kaeru-kun!” Gama-kun called out in a loud voice. “Can you do a trick like this?”
「いいや。」かえるくんは 小さな こえで こたえましたが、そのからだは とても とても 小さく 見えました。
“Nope,” Kaeru-kun replied in a tiny voice, looking even smaller—so small that he seemed minuscule.
「がまがえるどのは こんどは ダンスを お目にかけます。すばらしい ダンスです。」へんてこな こえが いいました。
“Next, Gama-kun will show us a spectacular dance!” announced the strange voice.
「かえるくん、きみ こんなに すばらしく おどれるかい？」がまくんは ぶたいせましと おどりながら いいました。
“Kaeru-kun! Can you dance this wonderfully?” Gama-kun said, dancing all over the stage.
へんじは ありません。
There was no answer.
がまくんは きゃくせきの ほうを のぞきこみました。
Gama-kun peeked out toward the audience seats.
かえるくんは とても 小さく なって いたので、がまくんには 見えなかったし こえも きこえなかったのです。
Kaeru-kun had become so tiny that Gama-kun couldn’t see him anymore or even hear his voice.
「かえるくん、」がまくんが いいました。「きみ どこに いるの？」
“Kaeru-kun,” Gama-kun called. “Where are you?”
それでも へんじが ありませんでした。
Still, there was no reply.
「かえるくん ぼくは とんだことを しちゃったね。」がまくんは なきごえで いいました。
“Kaeru-kun… I did something terrible to you…” Gama-kun said in a tearful voice.
すると そのとき へんてこな こえが いいました。
Then, at that moment, the strange voice spoke again.
「いだいなる がまがえるどのは こんどは......」
“The great Gama-kun will now…”
「だまれ！」がまくんが きいきいごえで さけびました。
“Shut up!” Gama-kun shouted, his voice high-pitched and trembling.
「かえるくん、かえるくん。きみは どこへ いっちまったんだい。」がまくんは くらやみの なかで きりきりまいを しました。
“Kaeru-kun! Kaeru-kun! Where have you gone?” Gama-kun spun around and around in the darkness.
「かえって きておくれよ、かえるくん。」がまくんは 大きな こえで いいました。「ぼく ひとりぼっちに なっちゃうよ！」
“Please come back, Kaeru-kun!” Gama-kun shouted in a loud voice. “I’ll be all alone!”
「ぼくは ここに いるよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“I’m right here,” said Kaeru-kun.
がまくんの ベッドの わきに 立っていました。
He was standing beside Gama-kun’s bed.
「おきなよ がまくん」かえるくんが いいました。
“Wake up, Gama-kun,” Kaeru-kun said.
「かえるくん。きみ ほんとに きみなんだね？」がまくんが いいました。
“Kaeru-kun… Is it really you?” Gama-kun asked.
「もちろん、ぼくだよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Of course, it’s me,” Kaeru-kun said.
「それで きみ いつもと おなじ 大きさかい？」がまくんが たずねました。
“And… you’re your usual size, right?” Gama-kun asked.
「うん。そう おもうよ。」かえるくんが いいました。
“Yeah… I think so,” Kaeru-kun replied.
がまくんは まどから はいって くる お日さまの ひかりを 見つめました。
Gama-kun gazed at the sunlight streaming in through the window.
「かえるくん。」がまくんが いいました。「ぼく きみが きて くれて うれしいよ。」
“Kaeru-kun,” Gama-kun said. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
「いつだって きてるじゃないか。」かえるくんが いいました。
“I’m always here, aren’t I?” Kaeru-kun said.
それから ふたりは たっぷり あさごはんを たべました。
Then, the two of them ate a big breakfast together.
それから ながい すばらしい 一日を いっしょに すごしました。
And they spent a long, wonderful day together.
