むかし、ある国に とっても おしゃれな 王さまが いました。
Once upon a time, in a certain kingdom, there was a very fashionable emperor.
この 王さまと きたら、一じかんごとに ふくを きがえないと 気が すみませんし、しかも、いつでも あたらしい ふくを ほしがるのです。
This emperor couldn’t stand going an hour without changing his clothes, and he always wanted something new to wear.
けらいたちは たいへんです。
The servants had a hard time with him.
おしゃれの ことしか かんがえない 王さまは、なにも おしごとを しませんし、けらいたちが せっかく あたらしい ふくを かってきても、気に いらないと おこってしまうのです。
The emperor, who only thought about fashion, didn’t do any work, and even when the servants went out of their way to bring him new clothes, if he didn’t like them, he would get angry.
そこで けらいたちは、こんな おふれを だしました。
So, the servants issued a proclamation:
『王さまの お気に めす、すばらしい ふくを したてた ものには、いくらでも ほうびを だす』と。
"To anyone who makes a splendid outfit that pleases the emperor, a generous reward will be given."
すると ある日、おしろに ふたりの うそつきが やってきました。
Then one day, two swindlers came to the palace.
「わたしたちは したてやで よにも めずらしい ふしぎな ふくを つくれます。」
"We are tailors who can make a wondrous outfit that is unlike anything you’ve ever seen."
王さまは よろこびました。
The emperor was delighted.
「いったい、それは どんな ふくじゃ。」
"What kind of clothes are they?" he asked.
したてやは、こんな ことを いいました。
The tailors replied:
「それは もう、王さまも ごらんに なった ことが ないほど、うつくしい ふくです。しかも、ふしぎな ことに、ばかものの 目には みえない、と いう ふくなのです。」
"It’s an outfit more beautiful than anything you’ve ever seen, Your Majesty. And the marvelous thing is, the clothes are invisible to anyone who is foolish."
さっそく 王さまは、したてやに ぬのを おる きかいと へやを あたえました。
Immediately, the emperor provided the tailors with a loom and a room to work in.
それから まい日、きかいを コットン、コットン、ひびかせて、ふたりの したてやは、はたらいている ふりを したのです。
Every day, the two tailors pretended to work, making the loom clatter as if they were weaving.
ふたりは 大うそつき でしたから、「ばかものの 目には みえない ふく」と いっておいて、なにも つくらずに、王さまから ごほうびを せしめようと かんがえて いたのです。
These two were great liars. They planned to say, "The clothes are invisible to fools," and receive a reward from the emperor without making anything.
なん日か たって、王さまは ふくを みたくなりました。
After a few days, the emperor wanted to see the clothes.
でも.....。
But...
（わしに みえないはずは ない。しかし、もし みえなかったら どうしよう。）
(There’s no way I won’t be able to see them. But what if I can’t see them?)
そこで 王さまは だいじんを よんで、かわりに みてくるよう めいれい しました。
So the emperor called a minister and ordered him to go and take a look in his place.
だいじんは、したてやたちの へやに いきました。
The minister went to the tailors' room.
「どうぞ ごらんください。」
"Please, have a look."
そうは いわれたものの、だいじんには なにも みえませんでした。
Although he was invited to see, the minister saw nothing at all.
それも そのはず、もともと なにも ないのですから。
Of course, because there was nothing to see in the first place.
ところが だいじんは、じぶんが ばかだから みえないのだろうか、と しんぱいに なりました。
However, the minister began to worry that maybe he couldn’t see them because he was foolish.
それなのに したてやは 「いかがで ございましょうか。」と きくのです。
Even so, the tailors asked, "How do they look?"
「みえない」なんて こたえたら、みんなから ばかものだと おもわれるでしょう。
If he said, "I can’t see them," everyone would think he was a fool.
そうしたら、だいじんを くびに なるかも しれません。
He might even lose his job as a minister.
だいじんは、したてやに いいました。
So the minister said to the tailors:
「これは みごとじゃ。うつくしいのう。」
"This is magnificent. How beautiful."
そして、王さまの ところに もどると、みたことも ないほど すばらしい ふくだった、と ほうこく しました。
And when he returned to the emperor, he reported that the clothes were more splendid than anything he had ever seen.
王さまは、すっかり うれしくなりました。
The emperor was overjoyed.
「ようし、わしも あとで みに まいろう。」
"Very well, I shall go and see for myself."
王さまは けらいたちを ひきつれて したてやの へやに いきました。
The emperor, accompanied by his servants, went to the tailors' room.
したてやたちは、いそがしそうに きかいを うごかしていました。
The tailors were busy moving the loom.
もちろん けらいたちには、ふくなんか みえません。
Of course, the servants couldn’t see any clothes.
でも、みんな、じぶんだけが みえないのだと おもったので、くちぐちに ふくを ほめそや しました。
But they all thought they were the only ones who couldn’t see them, so they each praised the clothes.
「おお、すばらしい！」
"Oh, magnificent!"
「ことばに あらわせない うつくしさだ。」
"It’s beyond words, how beautiful."
けらいたちが いいました。
The servants said:
「王さま、どうぞ おちかくで ごらんに なってください。」
"Your Majesty, please come closer and take a look."
さて 王さまですが、いくら 目を こらしても、なにも みえないのです。
Now, the emperor, no matter how hard he looked, saw nothing at all.
（なんと したことじゃ。この わしが ばかもの だと いうのか。これは、たいへんな ことに なったぞ。）
(What on earth is going on? Could it be that I am a fool? This is a serious problem.)
王さまは すっかり よわって しまいましたが、しかたなく いいました。
The emperor was utterly at a loss, but he had no choice but to say:
「ふむ、みごとじゃ。気にいったぞ。」
"Indeed, magnificent. I like it."
すると したてやたちは
Then the tailors said,
「それでは、ひろげて ごらんに いれましょう。」
"Well then, let us display it for you."
と、ふくを もちあげるような しぐさをしました。
They made a gesture as if they were holding up the clothes.
それを みて、けらいたちが こえを あげました。
Seeing this, the servants cried out:
「なんという すばらしさでしょう。わたしたちだけで みるのは もったいない。」
"What a marvel! It would be a shame if only we got to see it."
「こんど おこなわれる パレードでは、この ふくを おめしに なっては いかが でしょう。」
"How about wearing this outfit in the upcoming parade?"
すると 王さまも 「それは、よい かんがえじゃ。」
And the emperor replied, "That’s a splendid idea."
あんまり みんなが ほめる ので、王さまも ふくを きるのが、たのしみに なってきたのです。
Everyone praised the clothes so much that the emperor himself began to look forward to wearing them.
そうして、なん日かが すぎました。
And so, a few days passed.
ふくが できた、と いう しらせに、王さまは、したてやの ところに とんで いきました。
When the news came that the clothes were ready, the emperor rushed to the tailors' place.
「ようやく ふくが できあがりました。いかがで ございましょう。」
"At last, the clothes are finished. How do you find them?"
「おお、これは みごとな できばえじゃ。」
"Oh, this is a splendid creation."
王さまは まんぞくして、したてやたちに たっぷり ごほうびを とらせました。
The emperor was satisfied and gave the tailors a hefty reward.
「では、王さま、ふくを おめしかえに なってください。この ふくは、くものすの ように かるく できて おりますから、なにも きていないように おもえるかもしれませんが.....」
"Now, Your Majesty, please change into the outfit. This outfit is so light, it might feel as if you’re wearing nothing at all..."
こんなことを いいながら、したてやたちは、きがえを てつだいます。
As they said this, the tailors helped the emperor get dressed.
「それでは、どうぞ かがみを ごらんに なってください。」
"Now, please take a look in the mirror."
王さまは、よこを みたり、うしろを むいたり。
The emperor turned this way and that, looking himself over.
なんだか、うれしくなって きました。
Somehow, he began to feel happy.
けらいたちが いいました。
The servants said:
「よく おにあいです。」
"It suits you perfectly."
「ごりっぱです。」
"You look magnificent."
こうして 王さまの パレードが はじまりました。
And so, the emperor's parade began.
ふくの すそを もつ けらい、はたを かかげもつ けらい..... たくさんの おともを ひきつれ、王さまは あるいていきます。
With one servant holding the hem of the outfit, another holding a flag... the emperor walked along with many attendants.
さて、そのころには、王さまの あたらしい ふくの うわさは、国じゅうに ひろまっていました。
By this time, news of the emperor's new clothes had spread throughout the kingdom.
ですから、ひとびとは、くちぐちに 王さまの ふくを ほめそや しました。
So, people everywhere praised the emperor's clothes.
みんな、まわりの ひとに ばかもの だと おもわれたく ないですからね。
No one wanted to be thought of as a fool by others.
「ほんとうに ごりっぱな こと。」
"How truly magnificent."
「かがやく ばかりの ごようすだね。」
"Such a brilliant display."
王さまの ふくが こんなに ほめられた ことは、これまでに いちどもありません。
The emperor had never received so much praise for his clothes before.
ところが そのとき、小さな こどもが さけびました。
But then, a small child shouted:
「だけど、王さまは なんにも きて いない じゃないか。」
"But the emperor isn’t wearing anything at all!"
まわりの ひとびとも、ひそひそ ささやき はじめ、そして とうとう、いっせいに さけびだしたのです。
People around began to whisper, and finally, they all shouted together:
「王さまは はだかだ！」と。
"The emperor is naked!"
王さまは はずかしく なりましたが、どうすることも できません。
The emperor was embarrassed, but there was nothing he could do.
しかたなく、そのまま パレードを つづけていました。
Helplessly, he continued the parade just as he was.
