むかしー すぺいんに、
Once upon a time, in Spain,
ふぇるなんど と いう かわいい こうしが いました。
there was a sweet little calf named Ferdinand.
ほかの こうたちは、まいにち、とんだり、はねたり、かけまわったり、あたまを つっつきあったりして、くらして いました。
While other calves spent their days running, jumping, and playfully butting heads with one another,
けれども、ふぇるなんどは、そうでは ありませんでした。
Ferdinand was different.
いつも ひとり、くさの うえに すわって、しずかに、はなの においを かいで いるのが、すきでした。
He loved sitting quietly by himself in the grass, enjoying the smell of flowers.
まきばの はしの こるくの 木の したに、いつも すわりに いく、だいすきな ばしょが ありました。
His favorite spot was under a big cork tree at the edge of the pasture.
ふぇるなんどは この 木が すきで、一にちじゅう、こかげに すわって、はなの においを かいで いました。
There, he would spend all day in the shade, happily sniffing the flowers.
ふぇるなんどの おかあさんは、ときどき、むすこの ことが しんぱいに なりました。
Ferdinand’s mother sometimes worried about him.
ひとりぼっちで さびしくは ないかしらと、おもうのでした。
She wonders if he feels lonely, being all by himself.
「どうして、おまえは ほかの こどもたちと いっしょに、とんだり、はねたりして あそばないの？」と、おかあさんは ききました。
“Why don’t you run and play with the other calves?” she asked.
けれども、ふぇるなんどは あたまを ふって、いいました。
Ferdinand shook his head and he replied.
「ぼくは こうして、ひとり、はなの においを かいで いるほうが、すきなんです。」
“I’d rather sit here and smell the flowers.”
そこで おかあさんは、ふぇるなんどが さびしがって いない ことが わかりました。ーうしとは いうものの、よく ものの わかった おかあさんでしたので、ふぇるなんどの すきなように しておいて やりました。
His mother, being a wise cow, realized that Ferdinand wasn’t lonely. So, she let him do as he liked.
としが たつに つれて、ふぇるなんどは、どんどん、おおきく なりました。
As the years went by, Ferdinand grew bigger and stronger.
しまいに とても おおきな つよい うしに なりました。
He became a very big and powerful bull.
おなじ まきばで、いっしょに おおきく なった ほかの うしたちは、一にちじゅう、つので つっつきあったり、あたまを ぶつけあったりして、くらして いました。
The other bulls in the pasture also grew up, but they were still busy butting heads and fighting all day.
まどりーどの とうぎゅうで、はなばなしく たたかって みたい というのが、みんなの いちばんの のぞみだったのです。
Their dream was to be chosen to fight in the famous bullfights in Madrid.
けれども、ふぇるなんどは ちがいました。あいかわらず、こるくの 木の したに すわって、しずかに、はなの においを かいで いました。
Ferdinand, however, still preferred sitting quietly under his favorite cork tree, smelling the flowers.
ある日、へんな ぼうしを かぶった 五にんの おとこが やって きました。
One day, five men wearing funny hats came to the pasture.
まどりーどの とうぎゅうに だす、いちばん おおきな、いちばん あしの はやい、いちばん らんぼうな うしを さがしに きたのです。
They were looking for the biggest, fastest, and most ferocious bull for the bullfights in Madrid.
まきばの ほかの うしたちは、みな、うーうー うなったり、つので つっつきあったり、もうれつに あばれまわりました。うしかいの おとこたちが、こりゃ つよい、すごい うしだと おもって、つれてって くれると かんがえたのです。
The other bulls snorted, butted each other with their horns, and caused a great commotion, hoping to be chosen.
ふぇるなんどは、うしかいが じぶんを まどりーどに つれて いく ことなんかないと おもいました。また、そんな ことは どうでも いい ことでした。
Ferdinand thought that he would never be chosen and paid no attention to the men.
それで、いつものように、すきな こるくの 木の したへ、すわりに いきました。
He went to his favorite tree as usual to sit down
ふぇるなんどは、こしを おろすとき、よく したを みませんでした。
When he sat down, he did not check well where he was sitting.
ひやりと した、きもちの いい くさの うえに、こしを おろす つもりで、なんと、一ぴきの おおきな くまんばちの うえに、すわりこんで しまいました。
Thinking he was sitting down on some cool, pleasant grass, he ended up sitting right on top of a big bumblebee.
もし、みなさんが くまんばちで、うしが どっかり、あなたの うえに こしを おろしたと したら どうします？
If you were the bumblebee and a cow plopped itself down heavily on top of you, what would you do?
はりで、いやと いうほど うしの おしりを さすでしょう。
You’d sting that cow's rear as hard as you could, wouldn’t you?
この くまんばちが した ことも、まさに そのとおりでした。
That’s exactly what the bumblebee did.
「いたい！」
“Ouch!”
ふぇるなんどは、うなりごえを あげて、とびあがりました。
Ferdinand let out a groan and jumped up.
そして、ふう ふう いいながら、きでも ちがったように、あたまを ふりたて、じめんを けちらかして、あばれまわりました。
Then, panting heavily as if he'd gone mad, he shook his head, kicked up the ground, and rampaged around.
五にんの おとこたちは、この ようすを みて、わっと、よろこびの こえを あげました。
The five men saw this and burst out cheering with excitement.
とびきり おおきな、とびきり ものすごい うしが、やっと みつかったのです。
They had finally found an absolutely enormous and absolutely fierce bull.
これこそ、まどりーどの だいとうぎゅうに もってこいの うしです！
This was the perfect bull for the grand bullfight in Madrid!
うしかいの おとこたちは、ふぇるなんどを くるまに のせて、まどりーどへ つれて いきました。
The men loaded Ferdinand into a cart and took him to Madrid.
いよいよ だいとうぎゅうの 日に なると、まちじゅう はたで うずまり、がくたいまで でる さわぎでした。
When the day of the grand bullfight finally arrived, the entire town was filled with flags, and even marching bands paraded around.
とうぎゅうじょうに おしかけた きれいな おんなの ひとたちは、みな、あたまに はなを さして いました。
The beautiful women who came to the bullring all had flowers in their hair.
さて、らっぱふきを せんとうに、とうぎゅうたちの にゅうじょうしきが はじまりました。
With trumpeters leading the way, the grand entry ceremony of the bullfighters began.
まず はじめに、ながい けんを もった ひとたちが やって きました。
First, men carrying long swords entered.
この けんで ついて、うしを おこらせる ひとたちです。
These are the people who provoke the bull by poking it with their swords.
つぎには、ながい やりを もった ひとたちが、やせた うまに のって、やって きました。
Next, men carrying long spears arrived, riding on thin, bony horses.
この やりで うしを ついて、もっと おこらせるのです。
They use these spears to poke the bull and make it even angrier.
さいごに、だいとうぎゅうしが、とくいに なって やって きました。
Finally, the grand matador made his entrance, brimming with confidence.
きどった ようすで、けんぶつの おんなの ひとたちに ごあいさつを しています。
He strutted around, greeting the women in the audience with a showy air.
あかい まんとを はおり、あとから、しょうねんが けんを もって ついてきます。
He wore a red cape, followed by a young boy carrying a sword.
この けんで、うしに さいごの とどめを さすのです。
This sword is used to deliver the final blow to the bull.
いよいよ、うしが あらわれました。
At last, the bull appeared.
だれだか、ごぞんじでしょう？
Do you know who it is?
ーふぇるなんど ですよ。
It’s Ferdinand.
ふぇるなんどは さっと、とうぎゅうじょうの まんなかへ かけこみました。
Ferdinand dashed into the center of the bullring.
けんぶつは、みな、はくしゅ かっさい、おおさわぎです。
The audience erupted in applause and cheers.
ふぇるなんどが はないきも あらく、もうれつに つっかかって いって、つので つきまくると おもったからです。
They thought Ferdinand would snort furiously, charge wildly, and attack with his horns.
ところが、ふぇるなんどは そうは しませんでした。
But Ferdinand didn’t do any of that.
けんぶつの おんなの ひとたちが、みな、はなを さして いるのを みると、のっそり そのばに すわりこんで、ゆうゆうと、はなの においを かぎはじめました。
When he saw the women in the audience wearing flowers, he calmly sat down and began leisurely sniffing the flowers.
とうぎゅうしたちが どんなに けしかけても、ふぇるなんどは たたかおうとも しなければ、あばれようとも しませんでした。
No matter how much the bullfighters tried to provoke him, Ferdinand neither fought nor caused a scene.
ただ すわって、はなの においを かいで いました。
He simply sat there, sniffing the flowers.
とうぎゅうしたちは やっきと なって あばれまわりました。
The bullfighters became frantic and stormed around.
ことに だいとうぎゅうしは、じぶんの うでまえを みせる ことが できないので、とても おこって どなりちらしました。
The grand matador, in particular, was furious because he couldn’t show off his skills and shouted angrily.
とうとう、ふぇるなんどは もとの まきばへ つれもどされる ことに なりました。
In the end, Ferdinand was taken back to his pasture.
ふぇるなんどは、いまでも だいすきな こるくの 木の したに すわって、あいかわらず、しずかに はなの においを かいで いる という ことです。
It’s said that even now, Ferdinand sits under his favorite cork tree, quietly sniffing flowers as always.
ふぇるなんどは とても しあわせでした。
Ferdinand was very happy.
