ヘンゼルとグレーテル Hansel and Gretel
ふかい 森の そばに、まずしい きこりの いえが ありました。
By the edge of a deep forest, there was a poor woodcutter's house.
子どもの ヘンゼルと グレーテルは よく お手つだいを しましたが、とう とう たべものが ほんの すこしだけに なって しまいました。
Hansel and Gretel, the children, often helped around the house, but eventually, they had very little food left.
おとうさんは こまりはてて、ためいきを つきました。
The father sighed deeply, troubled.
「このままでは、子どもたちも しんでしまう。かわいそうになあ。」
"If things continue like this, the children will die too. How pitiful."
すると、おかあさんが いいました。
Then, the mother said,
「あの子たちを 森の おくに おいてきたら.....。それしか ないよ。」
「そんなこと できないよ。」
"What if we leave them deep in the forest... It's the only way."
おとうさんは はんたいしましたが、おかあさんは ききません。
"I can't do that," the father opposed, but the mother wouldn't listen.
「でも あの子たちは 木のみを じょうずに さがせるし、じぶんたちで 生きて いけるよ。それに 森で だれかが 見つけて、そだてて くれるかも しれないじゃないの。」
"But the children are good at finding nuts and can live on their own. Besides, someone in the forest might find them and raise them."
「この いえで わしらと いるよりは、しあわせに なるだろうか...。」
おとうさんは つぶやくのでした。
"Would they be happier than staying here with us...?" the father murmured.
おなかが すいて ねむれないまま、子どもたちは りょうしんの はなしごえを すっかり きいて しまいました。
The children, hungry and unable to sleep, overheard their parents' conversation.
しくしく なき出した グレーテルを、ヘンゼルは なぐさめます。
Gretel began to cry softly, and Hansel comforted her.
つぎの あさ、「さあ、木のみを さがしに いこう。」
The next morning, "Come on, let's go look for berries."
おとうさんと おかあさんは、子どもたちを 森へ つれていきました。
The father and mother took the children into the forest.
ヘンゼルは ポケットの 小石を ぎゅっと にぎりました。
Hansel clenched a pocketful of small stones tightly.
かえりみちの 目じるしに しようと、夕べ こっそり ひろって おいたのです。
He had secretly gathered them the previous night to use as markers for the way back.
森を ずっと 入った ところで、おとうさんと おかあさんは、子どもたちに パンを 一つずつ わたして、うそを つきました。
「あとで むかえに くるからね。」
Deep in the forest, the parents gave each child a piece of bread and lied, "We'll come back to get you later."
そして ヘンゼルと グレーテルを のこして、いって しまいました。
Then, they left Hansel and Gretel and went away.
パンを たべて、子どもたちは よりそって ねむりました。
After eating the bread, the children huddled together and fell asleep.
目を さますと、あたりは くらくなって います。
When they woke up, it was dark all around.
グレーテルはなきだしました。
Gretel started to cry.
「月が 出るまで まつんだよ。」
"Wait until the moon comes out."
やがて、月が でました。
Eventually, the moon rose.
ヘンゼルは グレーテルの 手を とって、森をあるき出しました。
Hansel took Gretel's hand and began to walk through the forest.
目じるしに おとした 小石が、月あかりに 白いほう石の ように ひかって います。
The stones he had dropped as markers shone like white pebbles in the moonlight.
あさまで あるいて、二人は やっと いえに つきました。
Walking until morning, they finally reached their home.
「おお、よく かえって これた！」
"Oh, you made it back!"
そう いって おとうさんは 二人をだきしめましたが、おかあさんは かなしそうな かおを するだけでした。
The father exclaimed, hugging them tightly, but the mother just looked sad.
でも すぐに、ためものが すこしだけに なって しまいました。
However, soon enough, the food ran out again.
「しかたが ないね...。こんどは 森の ずっと おくに おいてこよう。」
"There's no choice... This time we'll leave them deeper in the forest."
「わしは 子どもたちと いたい。」
"I want to stay with the children."
「ここに おいても、あの子たちに なにも たべさせて やれないんだよ！」
"If we keep them here, we won't be able to feed them anything!"
ヘンゼルは こっそり きいて います。
Hansel overheard this.
つぎの あさ、おとうさんと おかあさんは 一つだけ のこっていた パンを子どもたちに わたすと、森の 中へ つれて いきました。
The next morning, the father and mother gave the children their only remaining piece of bread and took them into the forest.
ヘンゼルは パンくずを おとしながら あるきました。
夕べは、小石を ひろえなかったのです。
Hansel dropped breadcrumbs along the way, as he hadn't been able to gather stones the night before.
お父さんと おかあさんは 森の ずっと おくへ 入ると、子どもたちを のこして 木を きりに いきました。
Deeper into the forest, the parents left the children and went away to cut wood.
「あとで むかえに くるよ。」
"We'll come back to get you later."
やはり こんども、それきり 二人は もどって きませんでした。
But once again, they did not return.
やがて、月が 出ました。
The moon eventually rose.
「グレーテル、目じるしの パンくずを たどって いえに かえろう！」
"Gretel, let's follow the breadcrumbs back home!"
けれども、どこを さがしても パンくずは ありません。
However, no matter where they looked, they couldn't find the breadcrumbs.
とりたちが のこらず たべて しまったのです。
The birds had eaten every last one.
二人は あるき つづけました。
The children continued walking.
でも あさに なっても、みちが 見つかりません。
But even as morning came, they couldn't find their way.
ひろい 森の 中で、まよって しまったのです。
ヘンゼルが 見つけた 木のみを、二人で わけあって たべました。
Lost in the vast forest, they shared the nuts Hansel found.
よるまで 二人は あるきつづけ、とうとう くたびれはてて 木の 下で ねむって しまいました。
They walked until night and eventually collapsed under a tree, exhausted.
そして、つぎの 日。二人は 森の 中に いえを 見つけたのです。
The next day, they found a house in the forest.
「なんて かわいい いえなの！」
"What a cute house!"
その いえは ぜんぶ おかしで できて いました。
The house was entirely made of sweets.
二人は む中で たべはじめました。
The children started eating in a frenzy.
ビスケットの やねを たべ、チョコレートの まどわくを かじります。
Munching on the biscuit roof and nibbling the chocolate window frames.
もの音が きこえたのか、いえの 中から おばあさんが 出て きました。
Hearing the noise, an old woman came out of the house.
「まあ、よほど おなかを すかして いたんだねえ。早く 中に お入り。」
"My, you must be very hungry. Come inside quickly."
テーブルに ならんだ ごちそうに、二人は 大よろこびです。
The children were overjoyed by the feast laid out on the table.
じつは、おばあさんは 森に まよいこんだ 子どもたちを たべて しまう、おそろしい ま女でした。
But the old woman was actually a wicked witch who ate lost children.
ま女は 目が よく 見えない かわりに、子どもの においは すぐ わかるのです。
Although her eyesight was poor, she could immediately smell the presence of children.
「さて、どっちを 先に たべよう。」
"Now, which one shall I eat first?"
つぎの あさ、ま女は ヘンゼルを 小やに とじこめると、すきまから ゆびを 出させました。
The next morning, the witch locked Hansel in a small pen and had him stick his finger out through a gap.
「なんて ほそいんだ。グレーテル！さあ、りょうりを つくって おやり。」
"How skinny you are. Gretel! Cook something for him."
ま女は、ヘンゼルを ふとらせて、たべる つもりなのです。
The witch intended to fatten Hansel up before eating him.
なん日かして、「どれ、ゆびを お出し。」と ま女が ヘンゼルに いいました。
After some days, "Let me see your finger," the witch said to Hansel.
でも ヘンゼルは 目の わるい ま女に、ゆびの かわりに ほそい とりの ほねを さわらせました。
But Hansel, knowing the witch couldn't see well, showed her a thin chicken bone instead of his finger.
「もう まてない！ やせて いても ヘンゼルを 食べて やる！グレーテル、かまどの 火を 見るんだ！」
"I can't wait any longer! Even if he's thin, I'll eat Hansel! Gretel, check the oven fire!"
「どうやって 見るの？ わからないわ。」
"How do I check it? I don't understand."
グレーテルは ヘンゼルを たすけようと、うそを つきました。
Gretel lied to save Hansel.
「ええい、こうするんだよ！」
"Gush, you have to do like this!"
かまどを のぞきこんだ ま女の せなかを、グレーテルは 力いっぱい おしました。
As the witch leaned over to check the oven, Gretel pushed her with all her might.
とうとう ま女は かまどの 中で しんでしまいました。
Finally, the witch fell into the oven and died.
ヘンゼルを たすけ 出して、グレーテルは だきあって よろこびました。
Gretel freed Hansel, and they hugged each other in joy.
二人は とだなに あった ほう石や たべものを もって、とび出しました。
They grabbed the jewels and food from the cupboard and ran away.
川に そって あるき、林を ぬけて、やっと いえに つきました。
Following the river and walking through the woods, they finally reached home.
いえでは、おかあさんが びょう気で しんでしまい、おとうさんは まい日、子どもたちの ことを おもい出して いました。
Their mother had died from illness, and their father had been thinking of them every day.
「ヘンゼル！ グレーテル！ もう おまえたちを はなしは しないよ。」
"Hansel! Gretel! I'll never let you go again."
おとうさんは 二人を しっかりと だきしめました。
Their father hugged them tightly.
