(The Wolf on the Bridge)
やまの なかに、いっぽんばしが ありました。
In the mountains, there was a narrow bridge.
ある あさ、うさぎが ゆっくりと はしを わたって いると、むこうから、おおかみが やって きました。
One morning, as a rabbit was slowly crossing the bridge, a wolf came from the other side.
「こら、こら。」と、おおかみは、うさぎを にらみつけました。
“Hey, hey!” the wolf glared at the rabbit.
「おれが わたって きたのに きが つかなかったのか。もどれ、もどれ。」
“Didn’t you notice I was crossing? Go back, go back!”
おおかみに どなられて、うさぎは、しかたなく うしろに もどりました。
Scolded by the wolf, the rabbit had no choice but to turn back.
「えへん、へん。」おおかみは、いい きもちです。
“Ahem, hem,” the wolf felt very pleased with himself.
それからと いう もの、おおかみは、この いじわるが おもしろく なりました。
After that, the wolf found this mischief to be quite entertaining.
きつねが きても、たぬきが きても、「こら、こら。もどれ、もどれ。」と、みんなを うしろに おいかえしました。
Whenever a fox or a raccoon came, the wolf would yell, “Hey, hey! Go back, go back!” and send everyone back the way they came.
ある ひの ゆうがた、おおかみが、いつものように はしを わたって いると、はしの まんなかで、だれかに ぶつかりました。
One evening, as the wolf was crossing the bridge as usual, he bumped into someone right in the middle of the bridge.
「こら、こら。」と いいかけて、おおかみは びっくりしました。
“Hey, hey!” he began to shout but then stopped in surprise.
めの まえに、おおきな くまが たって いたのです。
Standing before him was a big bear.
おおかみは、あわてて おじぎを しました。
The wolf quickly bowed.
「これは、これは。くまさんでしたか。わたしが うしろに もどります。」
“Well, well! It’s Mr. Bear. I’ll step back.”
すると、くまは、てを ふって いいました。
But the bear waved his hand and said,
「いや、いや、おおかみくん。そんな こと しなくて いいんだよ。ほら、こう すれば いいのさ。」
“No, no, Mr. Wolf. There’s no need for that. See, this is how you do it.”
くまは、おおかみを だきあげると、そっと うしろに おろして くれました。
The bear lifted the wolf up and gently placed him back on the other side.
おおかみは、くまの うしろすがたを、いつまでも みおくって いました。
The wolf watched the bear’s back as he walked away, staring after him for a long time.
つぎの ひです。おおかみは、いっぽんばしの まんなかで うさぎに あいました。
The next day, the wolf met the rabbit in the middle of the bridge.
うさぎは、あわてて ひきかえそうと しました。
The rabbit was about to turn back in a hurry,
おおかみは、やさしく よびとめました。
but the wolf gently stopped him.
「いや、いや、うさぎくん。そんな こと、しなくて いいんだよ。ほら、こう すれば いいのさ。」
“No, no, Mr. Rabbit. There’s no need for that. See, this is how you do it.”
おおかみは、うさぎを だきあげて、そっと うしろに おろして あげました。
The wolf picked up the rabbit and gently set him down on the other side.
「えへん、へん。」いい きもちです。
“Ahem, hem,” he felt quite good.
ふしぎな ことに、おおかみは、まえより ずっと いい きもちに なりました。
Strangely enough, the wolf felt much better than he did before.
