第1章 ゾウとおおきなサカナ
Chapter 1: The Elephant and the Big Fish
〇月〇日
〇 Month 〇 Day
ぼくは ゾウです。
I am an Elephant.
きょうは たいへんな ことが ありました。
Today, something terrible happened.
のどが かわいたので、かわへ みずを のみに いったら 「ザワザワ」と みずが うごいて、おおきな サカナが 「ニュー」と、でてきたのです。
I was thirsty, so I went to the river to drink some water. Suddenly, the water started moving, and a big Fish emerged."
そうして、ぼくの はなを 「パクリ」と たべました。
Then, the Fish "Chomp" swallowed my trunk.
ぼくは くるしいので、はなを 「ブルン」と うごかすと、おおきな サカナは 「モグモグ」と、ぼくの はなを ぜんぶ たべて しまいました。
I was in pain, so I tried to shake my trunk "Bwoosh," but the big Fish kept munching "Mogu Mogu" and ended up eating my entire trunk.
「モグモグ、モグモグ」と、とうとう ぼくの かおまで たべて しまいました。
"Mogu Mogu, Mogu Mogu," and eventually, the Fish even started eating my face.
ぼくは、くるしいので、メチャクチャに はしりました。
In agony, I ran around frantically.
くさに つまずいて ころんだり、きに ぶつかったりして あばれたけれど、サカナは とれません。
I tripped over grass, crashed into trees, and thrashed around, but the Fish wouldn't come off.
うちへ かえろうと しても においも わからないし、めも みえないので、どっちへ いけば いいか わかりません。
I wanted to go home, but I couldn’t smell anything or see anything, so I had no idea which way to go.
ぼくの めのまえは、まっくらです。
Everything in front of me was pitch black.
サカナが おおきく うごくと、ぼくの はなや かおも 「グラグラ」と うごきます。
When the Fish moved around a lot, my trunk and face would also shake.

〇 Month 〇 Day
トリの こえが きこえてきます。
I can hear the sound of Birds.
あさが やってきた ようです。
It seems morning has arrived.
ゆうべは、みじかい くさの はえている ところで ねました。
Last night, I slept in a patch of short grass.
サカナも 「グーグー」ねました。
The Fish slept too, snoring.
ときどき めを さました サカナは、「いい つきだなあ。」と いいました。
Sometimes, when the Fish woke up, it would say, "What a beautiful moon."
ぼくも つきが みたい。
I wish I could see the moon too.
おかあさんや、おとうさんは、つきを みながら ぼくを さがしている だろうと おもうと、かなしくなり、なみだが 「ザアザア」と でました。
Thinking about how my mom and dad might be looking at the moon while searching for me made me sad, and tears flowed down.
サカナが 「グー」と いいました。
Thee Fish said, "Guu."
また、トリの こえがします。
Once again, I hear the Birds.
「へんなのが いるぞ。ピー。」
"Look, there's something strange here. Pee!"
「サカナの ようでも あるし、ゾウの ようでも ある。」と、トリたちが いって います。
"It looks kind of like a Fish but also kind of like an Elephant," said the Birds.
ソヨソヨと、かぜが ふいてきて、ぼくの おなかと、せなかを なでて いきます。
A gentle breeze came and brushed my belly and back.
かぜよ、ぼくの ことを しらせておくれ。おかあさんや、おとうさんに しらせて おくれ。
"Oh, wind, please let my mom and dad know where I am."
ぼくは また かなしく なって、ないて しまいました。
I felt sad again and began to cry.
サカナが 「グー」と いいました。
The Fish said, "Guu."

〇 Month 〇 Day
また、あさが やってきました。
Morning has come once more.
あめが ふっています。
It's raining.
せなかに あたった あめは、おなかの ほうへ ながれて いきます。
The rain that hits my back flows down to my belly.
ときどき 「ゴロゴロ」と、かみなりの おとが きこえてきます。
Sometimes, I can hear thunder rumbling.
さびしい。
I feel so lonely.
ぼくは、また かなしくなり、なみだが あめのように 「ザアザア」と でました。
Feeling sad again, I cried, and my tears poured out just like the rain.
サカナが 「きのうから ないて ばかり いるので、おまえの なみだが、ぼくの おなかに いっぱい たまって、くるしんだよお、グエグエ、グー。」と いいました。
The Fish said, "You've been crying nonstop since yesterday, and now your tears have filled up my belly, making me miserable, Ugh Ugh, Guu."
ぼくは かまわず、おもいきり なきました。
I didn’t care; I cried as hard as I could.
そうしたら、「グアー」と、おおきな おとが して、サカナが みずを はきだしながら、ぼくの かおから とびだしました。
Then, with a loud "Gwaa," the Fish spat out water and flew off my face.
ぼくの なみだと あめに ながされて、サカナは、かわの ほうへ いって しまいました。
Washed away by my tears and the rain, the Fish floated back toward the river.
ぼくは うちへ かえって、いま、この にっきを かいています。
Now, I am home and writing this diary.

第2章 タヌキとカイジュウバス
Chapter 2: The Raccoon and the Monster Bus

ぼくは、タヌキです。
I am a Raccoon.
バスの うんてんしゅです。
I am a bus driver.
いつも やまの なかを はしっています。
I always drive through the mountains.
おきゃくさんは、ウサギさんとか、キツネさんとか、ネズミさんとか、リスさんとか、おおきな ほうでは クマさん なんかです。
My passengers are Rabbits, Foxes, Mice, Squirrels, and sometimes big ones like Bears.
みんな バスが だいすきで、バスに のっていると、「キューキュー、コンコン、チューチュー、ウォーウォー」なんて、にぎやかなの。
Everyone loves the bus, and when they’re riding, it’s always lively with sounds like "Kyu-kyu, Kon-kon, Chuu-chuu, Woo-woo."
おてんきの いいひ なんか、みんなで うたを うたったり して、えんそく みたいに なります。
On sunny days, everyone even sings songs together, and it feels like we’re on a field trip.
おきゃくさんが おりて、だれも いなくなる ときも あるけれど、そんなときは、なんだか とても さみしくなるので、ぼくは おおきなこえで うたを うたいます。
Sometimes, when the passengers get off and the bus is empty, I feel very lonely, so I sing loudly.
メチャクチャで、でたらめな うたなんか うたうんです。
I sing messy, made-up songs.
トリが とんできて、いっしょうけんめいに うたって くれるときも ありますよ。
Sometimes, birds fly over and sing along with all their might.
でもね、しんぱいな こともあるの。
But you know, there is something that worries me.
あのねぇー、わあー、しんぱいだ。しんぱいだ。
Oh, I’m so worried. So, so worried.
こわくて、ふるえるよお。
It makes me shiver with fear.
いつも とおるみちに、トンネルが あります。
There’s a tunnel on the road we always pass through.
この トンネルが こわいのよ。
This tunnel is really scary.
この あいだの はなしだけど、みちが ぐるっと まわって、そばの きに ザワザワと ふれながら、バスは トンネルに はいりました。
Just the other day, the road curved around, brushing against the trees that rustled, and the bus entered the tunnel.
おきゃくさんは のっていません。
There weren’t any passengers on board.
トンネルの なかは、くらくて 「ピト、ピト」と みずが たれています。
Inside the tunnel, it’s dark, and you can hear the water dripping.
おてんきの いいひ なんか、きゅうに トンネルに はいると まっくらに なって なんにも みえません。
On sunny days, suddenly entering the tunnel turns everything pitch black, and you can’t see anything.
あかりを つけて、うしろを みると、おおきな めだまが 「ビカビカ」ひかっているでは アリマシェンカ！
When I turn on the light and look back, there are big, glowing eyes shining at me!
ぼくは ビックリしてから だがいしみたいに かたく なって しまいました。
I got so surprised that I froze up like a stone.
こわいけど、よーくみると、カイジュウが バスに のっていました。
It was terrifying, but when I looked carefully, there was a Monster on the bus.
カイジュウは、ぼくの あたまに あつい いきを ふきかけ 「グワォー！」と ほえます。
The Monster blew hot breath on my head and roared, "Gwaoo!"
トンネルの なかなので、すごい こえです。
Because we were inside the tunnel, the roar was incredibly loud.
ぼくは、みみが ガンガンして、めは グルグル まわって しまいました。
My ears were pounding, and my eyes started spinning.
あんまり かおが あついので、よく みると、ぼくは いつのまにか カイジュウの くちの なかに いました。
My face felt so hot, and when I looked closely, I realized I was somehow inside the Monster’s mouth.
カイジュウの くちの なかで、ハンドルを もって うんてんを しているのでした。
I was driving with the steering wheel while sitting inside the Monster’s mouth.
バスは なくなりました。
The bus was gone.
バスよりも、ずっと おおきい カイジュウが、バスみたいに はしって いるのです。
The giant Monster, much bigger than the bus, was running like a bus.
「ゴォー、ゴォー」と ものすごい おとが します。
The sound it made was a tremendous "Gooo, gooo."
ぼくの みみは、バクハツ しそうです。
My ears felt like they were about to explode.
カイジュウバスは、しんかんせん みたいに はしって います。
The Monster Bus was speeding like a bullet train.
ぼくは、ハンドルを ギュッと にぎりしめて、ガクガク ふるえて いました。
I clutched the steering wheel tightly, trembling all over.
いつもの トンネルは、そんなに ながく ないんだけど、このときは、いつまで たっても トンネルから でませんでした。
Normally, the tunnel isn’t very long, but this time, we never seemed to come out of it.
でもね、きゅうに あかるくなって、そとに でたときは、カイジュウは いなくて、ぼくは ちゃんと バスを うんてんして いました。
But then, suddenly, it became bright, and when we exited the tunnel, the Monster was gone, and I was driving the bus normally.

第3章 ゴリラのえんそく
Chapter 3: Gorilla’s Excursion
〇月〇日
〇 Month 〇 Day
ぼくは ゴリラです。
I am a Gorilla.
ようちえんに いってるんだよ。
I go to kindergarten.
きょうは えんそくで、とおくの ほうへ いきました。
Today, we went on an excursion, traveling far away.
せんせいの あとを ついて あるいて いると、ヘビが やってきて、「おねがい、ぼくも つれてって。」と いいました。
While following our teacher and walking along, a Snake appeared and said, “Please, take me along too.”
そうして、さっさと ぼくたちの あたまの うえに のって しまいました。
Then, without waiting, it quickly slithered onto our heads.
ずうずうしい ヘビなんだ。
What a brazen Snake it was!
ぼくは、はらが たったので、「なんで じぶんで あるかないの！」と おこって やりました。
I got so annoyed and said, “Why don’t you walk by yourself?”
そうしたら ヘビが、「だって、だって、ぼくは あるくのが おそいから、しょうが ないので ある。」と、いばって いいました。
The Snake arrogantly replied, “Because, because, I’m slow at slithering, so it can’t be helped.”
ぼくたちは、しょうがないから、そのまま ヘビを あたまに のせて あるきました。
We had no choice but to keep walking with the Snake resting on our heads.
ヘビは ツルツル しているので、ときどき おちそうに なります。
Since the Snake is so slippery, it sometimes almost fell off.
ぼくたちは、ドンドンと、きの たくさん はえている ほうへ あるいて いきました。
We kept moving, deeper into a forest filled with many trees.
おおきな はっぱや、ちいさい はっぱが くびを ふっているように かぜに ふかれています。
Large leaves and small leaves swayed in the wind, almost as if nodding their heads.
あるいていると、ヘビは したを ペロペロと だします。
As we walked, the Snake stuck its tongue out, flicking it in and out.
ぼくは いちばん まえを あるいて いるので よくみえるんだ。
Since I was leading the group, I could see it clearly.
おもしろいので、ぼくも まねを して したを ペロペロと だして みました。
It was amusing, so I decided to mimic it and stuck my tongue out too.
そうして うしろを むいて、ペロペロと やりました。
Then, turning back, I wiggled my tongue at everyone.
みんなは 「ハハハ。」と わらって、したを ペロペロと だしました。
They all laughed, “Ha ha ha,” and everyone started sticking their tongues out too.
ペロペロ、ペロペロ、やりながら あるいて くると、せんせいが うしろを むいて、ビックリ しました。
Tongue flicking, tongue flicking, we all walked along like that. Our teacher turned around and was startled.
「ひえっ、なんで ヘビが ついてきたの？ それに みんな ペロペロ したを だして、ゴリラらしく ないわねぇ！」と いいました。
“Oh my goodness, why is there a Snake following us? And everyone’s sticking out their tongues; that’s not very Gorilla-like!” she said.
また すこし あるくと せんせいが、「さあ、ここらで ちょっと やすみましょう。」と いいました。
We walked a little further, and then the teacher said, “Okay, let’s take a short break here.”
ヘビは ヒョロリと したに おりて、クルクルと まるく なりました。
The Snake slipped down gracefully and coiled itself into a circle.
ぼくたちも まねを して、クルクル、クルクル まるく なりました。
We all copied it, curling up into circles too.
せんせいは ビックリして、「ゴリラらしく ないわねぇ！」と、また いいました。
The teacher was shocked and said, “This isn’t very Gorilla-like at all!”
また あるいて くると、きが たくさん あるところに でました。
We continued walking until we reached an area full of trees.
ヘビは、「やっぱり きの ほうが いいや。」と いって、きに まきついて しまいました。
The Snake said, “I definitely prefer being on the trees,” and wrapped itself around one.
ぼくたちも まねを して、きに まきついたの。
We all imitated it, wrapping ourselves around the trees too.
そうしたら せんせいが ビックリして、「これこれ、そんなこと しちゃ だめよ、ゴリラらしく ないわねぇ。」と いいました。
The teacher was alarmed and said, “Now, now, don’t do that; that’s not Gorilla-like!”
でも、おもしろいので みんな きに まきついて うごかないの。
But since it was so much fun, we all stayed wrapped around the trees, refusing to move.
せんせいは こまって しまって ボンヤリ していたけど、「みんな ヘビの ことが すこし わかって よかったかも しれないわねぇ。」と いいました。
The teacher looked flustered and confused but eventually said, “Well, perhaps it’s good that everyone learned a little about Snakes today.”
ヘビが きから おりてきて、ニョロニョロと あるいたけど、これが とても むずかしいんだよ。
The Snake slithered down from the tree and wiggled away, but it was very difficult to do.
ぼくたちは みんな、おなかを すりむいて しまいました。
We all scraped our bellies trying to do the same.
いまでも おなかが ヒリヒリして、いたいです。
Even now, my belly stings and hurts.
きょうの えんそくは そんなわけで、とても たのしかったよ。
That’s why today’s excursion was really fun!

第4章 ライオンのパンツ
Chapter 4: The Lion’s Pants

わがはいは、ライオンで ある。
I am a Lion.
ああ、きょうは いそがしかった。
Ah, today was a busy day.
あさ、きのしたで ねていたら 「ピーチク、パーチク」と、トリが やかましく なくんだ。
In the morning, I was napping under a tree when suddenly, "Tweet-tweet, chirp-chirp!" A bunch of birds started making a racket.
へんだなあと おもって、ちょっと うしろを みると、わがはいの しっぽの さきに まるくて、しろいものが ある。
I thought that was odd and looked back a little, and there it was—a round, white object at the end of my tail.
なんだろうと おもって よくみると、タマゴなのよ。
What on earth could it be? I took a closer look, and, well, it was an egg!
トリの やつが、しっぽの さきに タマゴを うんで いったので ある。
Some bird had laid an egg on the end of my tail.
しっぽの さきは モショ モショと けが はえているから、トリの すみたいで、タマゴを うむのに ちょうど いいんだね。
The tip of my tail has fluffy tufts of hair, making it a perfect place for a bird to nest and lay an egg.
でもね、しっぽを うごかすと タマゴが こわれて しまうから、しずかに、しずかに していたので、つかれてしまった。
But you see, if I moved my tail, the egg would break, so I had to stay very, very still, and it made me tired.
しっぽを クネクネと うごかして、たいそうを したくなったけど、タマゴが のっているので できないの。
I wanted to do some tail stretches, wiggle it around a bit, but I couldn’t because of the egg perched on top.
きょうは いい おてんき だったので、わがはいは、あおい そらに ういている くもを みていたんだ。
Since it was a lovely day, I watched the clouds drifting across the blue sky.
そうしたら、いつのまにか しっぽの ところに ハイエナが きていて、タマゴを ペロリと たべようと しているでは アリマシェンカ！
Then, before I knew it, a Hyena had snuck over to the end of my tail and was about to gulp down the egg!
わがはいは ビックリして 「ガオーッ」と、ほえた。
I was shocked and roared, "GRAAAWR!"
ハイエナは おしりを まるめて にげていった。
The Hyena curled up its tail and ran away.
タマゴを たべられなくて よかった。
Phew, the egg was safe!
しっぽの さきが ホコホコと、あたたかい。
The tip of my tail felt warm and cozy.
タマゴが あたたかいんだ。
The egg was warm too.
また、あおい そらに ういている くもを みていたら、いつのまにか しっぽの ところに サルが きていて、タマゴを ムシャリと たべようと している。
I went back to watching the clouds in the sky, but then a Monkey appeared out of nowhere and tried to chomp the egg.
わがはいは また 「ガオーッ」と、ほえた。
Once again, I roared, "GRAAAWR!"
サルは とんで にげていった。
The Monkey leaped away in fright.
タマゴを たべられなくて よかった。
Phew, the egg was safe again!
しんぱいだ、しんぱいだ。
But I was so worried, so very worried.
このままだと、つぎから つぎと だれかが やってきて、タマゴを たべようと するだろう。
If things kept going like this, more animals would come one after another, trying to eat the egg.
どうしよう、どうしよう。
What should I do? What should I do?
わがはいは、あたまの けを かきむしって かんがえた。
I scratched my head furiously, thinking hard.
わがはいは もともと あたまが いいからね、すぐに いい かんがえが うかんだよ。
Being a smart lion, a brilliant idea soon came to me.
きに ぶらさがっている やわらい つるくさで カゴみたいな ものを つくった。
I used the soft vines hanging from a tree to make something like a basket.
そうして、おしりから しっぽに かぶせたの。
Then, I covered my tail and bottom with it.
なんだか パンツみたいに なっちゃった。
It ended up looking like a pair of pants!
こうすると、タマゴを まもることが できる。
This way, I could protect the egg.
しばらくすると、たまごが コトコトと うごいた。
After a while, the egg started to wobble.
そうして タマゴから 「ピ、ピ、ピ」と、ちいさな こえがした。
Then, I heard tiny peeping sounds, "Peep, peep, peep!"
タマゴが われて、ちいさな トリが ころがって でてきたよ。
The egg cracked, and a tiny bird tumbled out.
トリは すこしすると、げんきに うごきだし、わがはいの パンツに つかまって 「ピー、ピー」と ないた。
Soon, the little bird began moving energetically, clinging onto my pants and chirping, "Peep, peep!"
わがはいは、やっと あるくことが できた。
Finally, I could move around again.
トリは、とても げんきで、パンツの なかを とんでいる。
The little bird was full of energy, flitting about inside my pants.
もっと、ちゃんと とべるように なったら、パンツから だしてやる つもりだけど、いまは、パンツの なかで ねむっているよ。
Once it learns to fly properly, I plan to let it out of the pants, but for now, it’s napping comfortably inside.
トリが いなくなったら、 パンツは ぬぐつもりである。
When the bird leaves, I’ll be ready to take off these pants.

第5章 シロクマ・レストラン
Chapter 5: Polar Bear Restaurant
〇月〇日
〇 Month 〇 Day
ぼくは アザラシだ。
I’m a Seal.
きょうは ビックリした。
Today, I was really surprised.
しずかな うみの なかから かおを だすと、とても いい においが した。
When I stuck my head out of the calm sea, I smelled something delicious.
そこは、おうさまの しろの しただった。
It was coming from underneath the King’s castle.
おうさまと いうのは、シロクマの ことなんだ。じぶんで おうさまと おもってるんだよ。
The King is a Polar Bear who thinks of himself as royalty.
けらいなんて、ぜんぜん いないの。
He doesn’t have any servants at all.
いいにおいは、しろの なかから してくる。
The wonderful smell was coming from inside the castle.
しろは、おおきな こおりの やまで できていて、つきの きれいな よるなんか、つきの ひかりで あおじろくなって、ほうせきよりも きれいなんだ。
The castle is made of a huge mountain of ice, and on beautiful moonlit nights, it glows bluish-white from the moonlight, looking even more beautiful than jewels.
うえの ほうを みると、おうさまが、おおきな フライパンを もって、なにか つくっている。
I looked up, and there was the King holding a big frying pan, making something.
おうさまが、「ホホホ、いらっしゃい、いらっしゃい。」と、へんな こえで いった。
The King called out in a strange voice, “Ho ho ho, welcome, welcome!”
しろの うえの ほうを よくみると 「シロクマ・レストラン」と かいた おおきな かんばんが でていた。
When I looked closely at the top of the castle, there was a big sign that said “Polar Bear Restaurant.”
いつのまにか、しろは レストランに なっていたのだ。
Before I knew it, the castle had turned into a restaurant.
それにしても、いいにおいだ。
And the smell was incredible.
「これは、エビフライですよ。」と、おうさまがいった。
“This is fried shrimp,” the King said.
そうして、「エビフライは、あついうちに カラシを チョイと つけて たべるのが さいこう なんですから。」といった。
Then he added, “Fried shrimp is best when you put a bit of mustard on it while it’s still hot.”
ぼくが だまっていると、「なんで レストランを つくったか、というと、どこから ともなく、おりょうりの ほんが ここに ながれついたのよ。
When I didn’t say anything, he continued, “You’re probably wondering why I opened this restaurant. Well, a cookbook somehow drifted here from who-knows-where.
それで、ためしに カモメの タマゴで、オムレツを つくりました。
So, I tried making an omelet with seagull eggs.
これが、じつに うまいの！
It turned out to be absolutely delicious!
ほんとに、おいしい りょうりの つくりかたが いっぱい でております。」と、おうさまが いった。
The book is full of recipes for really tasty dishes,” the King explained.
おうさまは、「それから、さかなを とってきて、にていたら、イカさんが きて、たべてくれました。
The King went on, “Then, I caught some fish and cooked them, and Mr. Squid came and ate them.
そのあと イカの スープを つくっていたら、カニさんがきて、めしあがりました。
Next, I made squid soup, and Mr. Crab came and enjoyed it.
そのあと、カニを にていたら、ペンギンさんがきて、たべてくれました。」と ペラペラ しゃべった。
After that, I cooked crab, and Mr. Penguin came and ate it.” The King kept talking non-stop.
そうして、「ペンギンの コロッケを つくったら、エビさんがきて、たべてくれました。
“And then, I made penguin croquettes, and Mr. Shrimp came and ate them.
そのあと、エビフライを つくっていたら、キミが きたわけ。 さあ、いらっしゃい。」と いった。
After that, I was making fried shrimp when you showed up. So come on in!”
ずいぶん、おきゃくさんの くる レストランだ。
Wow, what a popular restaurant this is.
ぼくは、レストランへ いくために、うみの なかから でようとした。すると、だれかが アシを ひっぱった。
I was about to come out of the sea to go to the restaurant when someone grabbed my flipper.
よくみると、イカの アシであった。
I looked closely, and it was a squid’s tentacle.
イカの アシは、「ぼくは おうさまに スープに された イカです。
The tentacle said, “I’m the squid who was turned into soup by the King.
ぼく １ぽんだけ にげてきました。」といった。
I managed to escape with just one tentacle.”
そうして、「あすこに いっては いけません。ぼくは、いいにおいが するので、レストランに はいって、ブイヤーベースと いう りょうりを たべたのです。
Then it warned me, “Don’t go there. I went in because of the delicious smell and ate something called bouillabaisse.
そのあと つかまって、スープに されました。
But then I got caught and turned into soup.
みんな そうやって、つぎつぎに りょうりされて いるのです。
Everyone ends up being cooked like that, one after another.
エビフライを たべたら、きっと アザラシの ステーキに されるでしょう。」と、イカの アシは いった。

Chapter 6: The World’s Greatest Roller Coaster

ぼくは キツネだけど、きょうは くたびれちゃった。
It was a tiring day for me, the Fox.
ぼくは もりの なかに ある ゆうえんちで はたらいて いるんだ。
You see, I work in an amusement park deep in the forest,
そこで ジェットコースターの かかりを やっている。
and I’m in charge of the roller coaster.
ジェットコースターの なまえは 「ノーテングルグル・メダマポン」と いうんだよ。
The roller coaster is called "Nouten Guruguru Medama Pon," which means something like "Head-Spinning, Eye-Popping Ride."
つまり、あたまの なかが グルグル まわって、めだまが ポンと とびだすぐらい メチャクチャに すごい ジェットコースターなんだ。
It’s so wild and extreme that your head spins, and your eyeballs feel like they’re about to pop out!
こんなのは せかいじゅう どこにも ありません。
There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world.
このまえ なんか、ウサギの こどもたちが いっぱい のったんだけど、ジェット・コースターを おりたときには、みんな しんだみたいに なった。
Just the other day, a bunch of rabbit kids rode it, and by the time they got off, they looked half-dead.
きゅうきゅうしゃを よんで びょういんに にゅういん したんだけど、たいへんだったよ。
We even had to call an ambulance, and they ended up being hospitalized. It was a big deal.
この ジェット・コースターは、みただけでも ゴチャゴチャしてて すごいのよ。おおきな おおきな かいぶつに みえるときも ある。
The roller coaster is so chaotic that it even looks like a giant monster sometimes.
ジェット・コースターの なかを かぜが ふくと、かいぶつの なきごえ みたいな おとを だすんだ。
When the wind blows through it, it makes a sound like a monster’s roar, which adds to its scary appearance.
きょうは なんで くたびれたかと いうと、オランウータンが おおぜい やってきて、みんな ジェット・コースターに のったんだ。
Today, I got exhausted because a whole group of orangutans came to ride it.
オランウータンと いうのは、ちゃいろの ながい けが いっぱい はえていて、おおきいんだよね。
Orangutans, you know, are huge and covered with long, brown fur.
だから、ぜんぶ のせるのに じかんが かかる。
It took ages to get them all seated,
けが いすに からまったりして たいへんなんだ。
and their fur kept getting tangled in the seats, which was a real hassle.
ぼくは いちいち なおして やったりして、いいかげん くたびれちゃった。
I was running around fixing everything and got completely worn out.
でもね、そのあとが えらいことに なってしまったのだ。
But that was just the beginning of the chaos.
オランウータンたちは、はじめの うちは いすに しがみついて、「グエーッ。」とか 「キューッ。」なんて こえを だしていた。
At first, the orangutans were clinging to their seats, making strange noises like "Gueeeh" and "Kyuuh."
ぼくは そんなのを みると 「どうだ、すごいだろう。」と じまん したく なるんだ。
Watching them made me want to brag, "See how terrifying this ride is?"
この ジェット。コースターに のると、みんな こわいもんだから、へんな こえを だしたり、めだまを タマゴみたいに おおきく したりする。
Because, really, everyone who rides this coaster ends up making weird noises and looking absolutely terrified.
オランウータンたちは、しばらくすると、しずかになった。
Eventually, the orangutans got quiet,
このときである。
and that’s when it happened.
「ゴオーッ」と、ぼくの まえを オランウータン みたいな ものが はしっていった。
"Gooosh!" Something brown and hairy like an orangutan ran past me.
たしかに ちゃいろの けを しているけれど、やまの ように みえた。
It looked like a mountain, but it had the orangutans' signature fur.
「ワーッ、たいへんだあ！」と、ぼくは さけんだ。
"Oh no, this is a disaster!" I shouted.
だって、よくみると、オランウータンたちの ながい けが からみあって、やまみたいに なっているんだ。
Upon closer inspection, I saw that the orangutans’ long fur had tangled together, turning them into a massive mountain-like clump.
つまりね、ジェット・コースターに のると、すごい かぜが からだに あたるから、オランウータンたちの けが メチャクチャに とびあがって、からみあい、オランウータンたちは やまみたいに なって しまったのよ。
The strong wind from the ride had made their hair fly around and knot up into a giant mess.
ジェット・コースターが とまると、ちゃいろの けの やまが おりてきた。
When the roller coaster finally stopped, a brown-haired mountain of orangutans stumbled off.
さあ、これからが たいへん。
Now came the real challenge.
ぼくは、からみあった オランウータンたちの けを、セッセ、セッセと、ほぐすのに ５じかんも かかった。
It took me five hours to untangle all that fur, working diligently to separate the orangutans one by one.
オランウータンたちは 「ノーテングルグル・メダマポン。」と いって、フラフラと かえって いった。
They wobbled away, mumbling "Nouten Guruguru Medama Pon," still dazed from the wild ride.
