むかし、あるところに、おじいさんと おばあさんが ふたりきりで すんでいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, there lived an old man and an old woman, just the two of them.
おじいさんと おばあさんは、子どもが ほしくて たまりませんでした。
The old man and the old woman longed to have a child, and they couldn't bear it anymore.
まいにち まいにち 村の 氏神さまに、「どうか 子どもを おさずけください」と おねがい していました。
Every day, they prayed to the village deity, asking, "Please, grant us a child."
ある日のこと、いつものように 氏神さまに おねがいして かえってくると、おばあさんが おなかが いたいと いいだしました。
One day, after making their usual prayer to the deity and returning home, the old woman suddenly said that her stomach hurt.
おじいさんが おなかを さすって やっていると、神だなから まるい たまごが ゆかに おちて われました。
As the old man gently rubbed her belly, a round egg fell from the household shrine onto the floor and cracked open.
すると 中から、小ゆびよりも 小さな 男の子が でてきました。
Inside, they found a tiny boy, even smaller than a little finger.
おじいさんも おばあさんも 大よろこびで、この子を かわいがり たいせつに そだてました。
The old man and the old woman were overjoyed, and they loved and cared for this child dearly.
けれども、男の子は いつまでたっても 生まれたときの ままで、すこしも 大きくなりません。
However, the boy remained just as small as he was when he was born and never grew any bigger.
村の人たちは この子のことを、いっすんぼうし と よぶようになりました。
The villagers began to call him "Issun-bōshi," meaning "One-Inch Boy."
ある日 いっすんぼうしは、
「おじいさん、おばあさん、わたしを みやこへ いかせてください」
と いいました。
One day, Issun-bōshi said, "Grandfather, Grandmother, please allow me to go to the capital."
おじいさんと おばあさんが、
「ひとりで いけるのかい」と きくと、いっすんぼうしは、
When the old man and old woman asked if he could go alone,
「だいじょうぶです。わたしに、はりと おわんと はしを ください」
と いいました。
Issun-bōshi confidently replied, "I'll be fine. Please give me a needle, a bowl, and some chopsticks."
そして、はりを 刀にして こしに さし でかけて いきました。
He then took the needle as a sword and tucked it into his waist, ready to set out on his journey.
あるいていくと、川が ありました。
As he walked, he came to a river.
いっすんぼうしは、川に おわんを うかべて、ふねに しました。
Issun-bōshi floated the bowl on the river to use it as a boat.
そして、はしを かいにして、川を のぼって いきました。
He used the chopsticks as oars to row upstream.
いっすんぼうしは、みやこへ つくと 大きな おやしきへ いってみました。
When Issun-bōshi arrived in the capital, he went to a large mansion.
おやしきの げんかんに、たかげたが おいて ありました。
At the mansion's entrance, there were tall geta (wooden clogs) placed outside.
いっすんぼうしは、その たかげたの 下に 入って、
「おとのさま、わたしを けらいに してください」
と、大きな 声で いいました。
Issun-bōshi crawled under the tall geta and called out loudly, "Lord, please make me your retainer!"
おとのさまが でてきて、あたりを みまわしましたが、だれも いません。
The lord came out and looked around, but saw no one.
きょろきょろ していると、たかげたの 下から 小さな 男の子が とびだしてきて、
「ここです。おとのさまの 足もとに います」
と いいました。
As he was looking around curiously, a tiny boy jumped out from under the geta and said, "Here I am, at your feet, my lord."
おとのさまが、
「おまえは だれだ」
The lord asked, "Who are you?"
と きくと、男の子は、
「わたしは いっすんぼうし と もうします。けらいに してください」
と いいました。
The boy replied, "I am Issun-bōshi. Please make me your retainer."
おとのさまは、すぐに けらいに してくれました。
The lord immediately took him in as a retainer.
ある日、おやしきの おひめさまの おでかけに、いっすんぼうしが おともを しました。
One day, Issun-bōshi accompanied the princess of the mansion on an outing.
しばらく あるいていくと、むこうから 大きな 赤鬼が やってきました。
After walking for a while, a large red demon came from the other side.
おひめさまは おそろしさに、立ちすくんで しまいました。
The princess was so terrified that she froze in place.
鬼は おひめさまに とびかかろうと しました。
The ogre tried to leap at the princess.
いっすんぼうしは、おひめさまを まもって ゆうかんに たたかいましたが、とうとう 鬼に のみこまれて しまいました。
Issun-bōshi bravely fought to protect her. Although he was eventually swallowed by the demon
けれども、いっすんぼうしは、はりの 刀を ふりまわし、鬼のおなかの 中を さんざんに さしまくりました。
However, Issun-bōshi swung his needle sword and stabbed fiercely inside the demon's belly.
とうとう 鬼は がまんできなくなって、
「はっくしょーん」
と、大きなくしゃみを しました。
Finally, the demon could not hold it in anymore and let out a loud sneeze.
いっすんぼうしは、くしゃみと いっしょに 鬼の 口から とびだしました。
Issun-bōshi flew out of the demon's mouth along with the sneeze.
鬼は いちもくさんに にげていきました。
The demon ran away in a hurry.
おひめさまは 大よろこび しました。
The princess was overjoyed.
かえろうと すると、小づちが おちていました。
As they were about to return, they found a small mallet that had fallen.
おひめさまは、鬼の 小づちを ひろって おやしきに もってかえりました。
The princess picked up the demon's mallet and took it back to the mansion.
おやしきに かえると、いっすんぼうしは、おとのさまに 鬼たいじの はなしを しました。
When they returned to the mansion, Issun-bōshi told the lord about the demon's defeat.
おとのさまも たいそう よろこびました。
The lord was also very pleased.
そして 鬼の 小づちを 手にとると、
Then, he took the demon's mallet,
「いっすんぼうし、この 小づちで おまえの からだを 大きくしてやろう」
と いいました。
"Issun-bōshi, I will use this mallet to make your body big" the lord then said.
おとのさまは、
いっすんぼうし 大きくなれ
いっすんぼうし 大きくなれ
と いいながら 小づちを ふりました。
The lord said "Issun-bōshi, grow big! Issun-bōshi, grow big!" while swinging the mallet.
すると、いっすんぼうしは みるみる 大きくなって、りりしい 若者に なりました。
As a result, Issun-bōshi quickly grew larger and became a handsome young man.
いっすんぼうしは りっぱな おさむらいに なり、おひめさまと けっこんして しあわせに くらしました。
Issun-bōshi became a fine samurai, married the princess, and they lived happily ever after.
めでたし めでたし
And so, it ends happily
