(The Weasel's Letter)
おばあちゃんの うちに ひっこした。
We moved into Grandma's house.
ふるい きの おうち。
It's an old wooden house.
てんじょうで おとが する。
I hear noises from the ceiling.
こと こと こと。
Clack clack clack.
なんか いる。なにかな？
Something's there. What could it be?
「いたちが おるんよ」
"It's a weasel,"
おばあちゃんが おしえてくれた。
Grandma told me.
「そのうち どっかに でてくるわ」
"Sooner or later, it'll show itself."
よる、おとうさんが かえってきた。
At night, when Dad came home...
「おかえりなさい」「ただいま」
"Welcome back!" "I'm home."
そのとき、ろじから なんか のぞいた。
Just then, something peeked out from the alley.
「あ、いたち！」
"Ah, a weasel!"
いたちは、じっと こっち みてから はしっていった。
The weasel stared at me for a moment, then ran off.
「いたち みたよ。ちゃいろの」
"I saw the weasel! It was brown."
「いたちはねぇ、ねずみやら とってくれるんよ」
"Weasels catch mice and such," Grandma explained.
げんかんで あそんでるとき
While I was playing at the entrance,
あしもとを いたちが とおった。
the weasel scurried past my feet.
「うわぁー」
"Whoa!"
いたちは くつ ひっくりかえして にげた。
It flipped over a shoe and darted away.
ねるとき、チーズを ろじに おいてみた。
Before bed, I left some cheese in the alley.
「いたち たべるかな」
"Will the weasel eat it?"
あさ、チーズは なくなって いたちの うんこが おちてた。
In the morning, the cheese was gone, but the weasel had left poop behind.
「『つ』っていう じ みたいやな」と おばあちゃんが いった。
"It looks like the letter 'つ'," Grandma said.
そのまた つぎのひも うんこが あった。
The next day, there was poop again.
これって いたちの てがみ ちゃうかな。
Could this be the weasel's letter?
わたしも いたちに おてがみ かこう。
I think I'll write a letter to the weasel.
いたち よんで くれるかな。
I wonder if the weasel will read it.
