ジオジオのかんむり JIOJIO NO KANMURI
(Jiojio's Crown)
ジオジオは、ライオンの中でも いちばん 強かったのです。
JioJio was the strongest of all the lions.
だから、遠くの方で、ジオジオの かんむりが ちかっと光ると、だれでも、こそこそ かくれてしまうのです。
So whenever JioJio’s crown gleamed brightly in the distance, everyone would quietly hide away.
本当は、ジオジオは つまらなかったのです。
But in truth, JioJio was bored.
きりんを おいかけるのも、しまうまを おいかけるのも、いやになって、ジオジオは 水の中を のぞいてみました。
He had grown tired of chasing giraffes and zebras. So, JioJio gazed into the water.
だれかと、ゆっくり 話してみたく なりました。
He began to wish for someone he could talk to, slowly and peacefully.
「おや、しらがが 生えてきた。おや、目が よく見えなくなってきた。」
“Oh, look at that—my mane is turning white. And my eyesight isn’t as sharp as it used to be.”
「ジオジオの王さま、つまらなさそうですね。わたしも つまんないんです。」
“King JioJio, you seem bored. I feel bored too.”
すぐそばで、はい色の 鳥が言いました。
Nearby, a gray bird spoke up.
「だって、六つもあった たまごが、みんな なくなってしまったんですよ。三つは、ひょうが ぬすんだんです。二つは、へびが のんだんです。あと一つは、川の中に おっことして しまったんです。」
“You see, I used to have six eggs, but now they’re all gone. Three were stolen by a leopard, two were swallowed by a snake, and one fell into the river.”
「そうかい、そりゃ、つまらないだろうな。うむー、ああっと、いいこと 考えた。たまごを うみたいなら、いいところが あるぞ。もっと 近よりなさい。ないしょで 教えるから。ほうら、おれの 頭の上の かんむりの 中なら、どう思う。」
“I see. That must be hard for you. Hmm, oh! I’ve got a great idea! If you’d like to lay eggs again, I know just the right spot. Come closer, and I’ll tell you a secret. Look, what do you think about laying them inside my crown?”
「なんて いい思いつき。本当に王さま、そこに うんでも いいんですか。」
“What a wonderful idea! Really, Your Majesty, is it okay to lay them there?”
はい色の 鳥は うれしくて、ぴょんと とび上がりました。
The gray bird was so happy that it hopped up and down with excitement.
鳥は、ジオジオの 頭の上に、すを作りました。鳥は、すの中に、たまごを うみました。
The bird built a nest on top of JioJio’s head and laid its eggs inside.
ジオジオは、鳥を頭の上に のせて歩いたのです。
JioJio carried the bird on his head as he walked.
のっそり のっそり、歩いたのです。
Step by heavy step, he walked slowly and steadily.
「たまごの ぐあいは どうかね。」
“How are the eggs doing?”
「ぐあい よさそうですよ、王さま。」
“They’re doing very well, Your Majesty.”
夕立が 来ると、ジオジオは、大きな 木の下で、じっと 雨やどりします。
When sudden showers came, JioJio stood quietly under a large tree to shelter from the rain.
夜になって、ジオジオが ねむっても、ひょうは そばに近よれません。
Even at night, while JioJio slept, no leopard dared come near.
へびも、たまごを ぬすめません。
And no snake could steal the eggs.
たまごは みんな、ジオジオの 頭の上に のっていたのですから。
After all, the eggs were safely nestled atop JioJio’s head.
春が来て、たまごは 一つ一つ かえりました。
Spring came, and one by one, the eggs hatched.
小さな ひなが、七つ 生まれました。
Seven little chicks were born.
ジオジオの 頭の上で、チッチ、チッチと 鳴きました。
They chirped, “Chirp, chirp!” from atop JioJio’s head.
はい色の鳥は 嬉しそうに、いくども えさをやりました。
The gray bird, delighted, fed them over and over again.
ひなは七つとも、みんな元気に そだったのです。
All seven chicks grew up healthy and strong.
七つの小鳥は、ジオジオの たてがみや しっぽに 止まって 鳴きました。
The seven young birds perched on JioJio’s mane and tail, chirping happily.
ジオジオは、よく目が見えません。
JioJio could no longer see very well.
でも、ジオジオは 聞いていたのです。小鳥の声を、うれしそうに じっと聞いていたのです。
But JioJio listened intently, joyfully soaking in the sound of the birds’ cheerful chirps.
