(The Pumpkin Vine)
おひさまが、まぶしい あさです。
The sun was shining brightly one morning.
かぼちゃばたけの かぼちゃは、つるを、ぐんぐん ぐんぐん、はたけの そとに のばして いきました。
In the pumpkin patch, a pumpkin started to stretch its vine farther and farther outside the patch.
「かぼちゃさん、かぼちゃさん。」
“Hey, Pumpkin, hey, Pumpkin,”
みつばちが とんで きて、こえを かけました。
A bee flew over and called out.
「そっちへ のびては だめですよ。そこは、みんなが とおる みちですよ。」
“Don’t stretch your vine that way. That’s a path where everyone walks.”
「そんな こと かまう ものか。」
“I don’t care about that,”
かぼちゃは、そう いって、ききません。
The pumpkin said, not listening at all.
「かぼちゃさん、かぼちゃさん。」
“Hey, Pumpkin, hey, Pumpkin,”
こんどは、ちょうちょが とんで きて、いいました。
Next, a butterfly flew over and said,
「あなたの はたけは、まだまだ すいて いますよ。
“There’s still plenty of space left in your patch.
そちらへ のびた ほうが いいですよ。」
It would be better to grow your vine in that direction.”
「いやだい。ぼく、こっちへ のびたいんだい。」
“No way. I want to stretch this way.”
かぼちゃの つるは、みちを こえて、すいかばたけに のびて いきました。
The pumpkin’s vine extended across the path and into the watermelon patch.
「かぼちゃさん、かぼちゃさん。」
“Hey, Pumpkin, hey, Pumpkin,”
すいかが、よびとめました。
A watermelon called out to stop it.
「ここは、わたしの はたけだから、はいって こないで くださいよ。」
“This is my patch, so don’t come in here.”
「ちょっと ぐらい、いいじゃ ないか。」
“Just a little bit won’t hurt,”
かぼちゃの つるは、ぐんぐん すいかの つるの うえを、のびて いきました。
The pumpkin’s vine kept growing over the watermelon vines.
「かぼちゃさん、かぼちゃさん。」
“Hey, Pumpkin, hey, Pumpkin,”
こいぬが とおりかかって、はなしかけました。
A puppy walked by and spoke to it.
「ここは、みんなの とおる みちだよ。」
“This is the path where everyone passes.”
「またいで とおれば、いいじゃ ないか。」
“You can just step over it to get by.”
こいぬは おこって、つるを ふみつけました。
The puppy got angry and stepped on the vine.
「ふまれたって、へいきだい。」
“Even if you step on me, I’m fine.”
そこへ、トラックが ブルンブルンと やって きました。
Then a truck came rumbling by.
そして、あっと いう まに、かぼちゃの つるを ぷつりと きって しまいました。
And in no time at all, it cut the pumpkin’s vine with a snap.
「いたいよう、いたいよう、ああん、ああん。」
“Ouch, ouch, oh no, oh no,”
かぼちゃは、ぽろぽろ ぽろぽろ なみだを こぼして なきました。
The pumpkin began to shed big tears, crying and sobbing.
