かぐやひめ The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
むかし、竹を きって かごや ざるを つくる、『竹とりのおきな』と いう おじいさんが いました。
Long ago, there lived an old man known as The Bamboo Cutter, who made baskets and sieves from bamboo.
ある日、おじいさんは 竹林の 中で まぶしく ひかる ふしぎな 竹を 見つけました。
One day, while walking through the bamboo grove, he discovered a mysterious bamboo glowing with a dazzling light.
おじいさんが その 竹を きると、なんと 中に 小さな かわいい 女の子が いたのです。
When he cut it open, he found a tiny, adorable girl inside.
おじいさんは 女の子を 手のひらで つつむようにして、いえに かえりました。
The old man gently cupped the girl in his hands and brought her home.
「おばあさん、この子を ごらんよ。」
“Look at this child, dear!” he said.
「なんて かわいい 子でしょう。」
“What a sweet little girl,” the old woman replied.
子どもの いない 二人は 大よろこび。
The couple, who had no children of their own, were overjoyed.
『かぐやひめ』と 名まえを つけて 大せつに そだてました。
They named her Kaguya-hime and raised her with great love and care.
花や ちょうちょと あそぶ かぐやひめを、二人は うれしそうに ながめます。
They watched happily as Kaguya-hime played among flowers and butterflies.
ふしぎな ことは まだ つづきました。
The wonders didn’t end there.
おじいさんが 竹を きるたびに、中に お金が 入っているのです。
Each time the old man cut bamboo, he found gold inside.
おじいさんは その お金で かぐやひめの ために きれいな へやを つくり、きものを かいました。
With that money, he built a beautiful room for Kaguya-hime and bought her fine kimonos.
三か月も たつと、かぐやひめは うつくしい むすめに そだちました。
In just three months, Kaguya-hime grew into a stunningly beautiful young lady.
しかし いえの 中に ばかり いて、出かけようとも しません。
However, she never wished to leave the house.
「このいえで、お二人の そばに いるのが 一ばん すきですもの。」
“I like being here with both of you the most,” she would say.
それを きくと、おじいさんも おばあさんも うれしく なるのでした。
Hearing that made the old couple even happier.
それでも かぐやひめの うつくしさは、くにじゅうに ひろまりました。
Even so, word of Kaguya-hime’s beauty spread throughout the land.
「かがやくほどに うつくしい、かぐやひめを ひと目 見たいものだ。」
“She shines with such beauty — I must see her just once!”
おくりものを もって やってくる 男たちに、かぐやひめは あおうとも しません。
Many men came bearing gifts, but Kaguya-hime refused to meet any of them.
しかし、五人の 男たちだけは あきらめませんでした。
Yet five suitors refused to give up.
「ぜひとも かぐやひめを つまに したい。どうか あって ください」
“I must make her my wife. Please, allow me to see her,” they begged.
おじいさんと おばあさんは あうように すすめました。
The old man and woman encouraged her to meet them.
「かわいい かぐやひめ。わしらも おまえが このいえを 出ていくのは つらい。でも、おまえには もっと もっと しあわせに なって もらいたいんじゃ。」
“Our dear Kaguya-hime, it would break our hearts to see you leave. But we want you to be truly happy.”
「では、わたしが ねがう ものを さがしてきた 人の つまに なりましょう。」
Kaguya-hime replied, “If someone can bring me what I desire, I shall become their wife.”
それは さがすのが むずかしい ものばかりでした。
But the items she named were nearly impossible to find.
かぐやひめは 五人が ことわって くれるのを のぞんでいたのです。
Kaguya-hime hoped the men would give up.
『いしつくりのみこ』が さがすのは、とおい 天じくの くにに あると いう ほとけの 石の はち。
Prince Ishitsukuri was told to find the stone bowl of the Buddha said to be in the distant land of Tenjiku (India).
とても かんたんに いくことは できません。そこで 山でらに 出かけて、ふるい石の はちを さがして きました。
He couldn’t go there, so he searched an old temple and found a weathered stone bowl.
「くろうして 天じくから もって きました。」
“I’ve brought this all the way from Tenjiku!” he claimed.
うそを ついて ふるぼけた 石の はちを 出すと、かぐやひめは くびを 左右に ふりました。
But Kaguya-hime shook her head.
「いいえ。ほとけの 石の はちは、うつくしく ひかっています。」
“No, the Buddha’s bowl sparkles with beauty. This one does not.”
『くらもちのみこ』が さがすのは、ほうらい山に あると いう しんじゅの みが なる 金の えだでした。
Prince Kuramochi was tasked with finding a golden branch bearing jeweled fruits from Mount Hōrai.
くらもちのみこは そっくりの ものを しょく人たちに つくらせて、かぐやひめの いえに はこびました。
He had skilled craftsmen make a fake one and brought it to her.
金の えだが とても きれいなので、かぐやひめが 見とれていると、しょく人たちが やってきました。
As Kaguya-hime admired the beautiful golden branch, the craftsmen arrived.
「やくそくの だい金を 早く はらってください。」
“Please pay us the promised amount!”
かぐやひめは すぐに くらもちのみこに お金を はらわせました。
She immediately made the prince pay them.
『あべのみうし』が さがすのは、火に 入れても もえない 火ねずみの かわごろもでした。
Abe no Miushi was told to bring a robe made from the fire-rat’s fur, which wouldn’t burn when placed in fire.
たくさんの お金を はらって、とうの くにの しょう人から かった かわごろもは にせもので、火に 入れると すぐに もえてしまいました。
He bought a fake one from a foreign merchant and offered it to her. When tested by fire, the robe instantly burned to ashes.
『おおとものみゆき』は りゅうの くびに ある、ひかる 玉を さがしに ふねで 出ぱつ しました。
Ōtomo no Miyuki was to retrieve a glowing jewel from the dragon’s neck. He set out by ship
けれども あらしに あい、やっとの ことで にげかえりました。
but was caught in a storm and barely made it back alive.
「もう かぐやひめは あきらめた！」
“I give up on Kaguya-hime!” he declared.
『いそのかみのまろたり』が さがすのは、つばめが もっていると いう 子やす貝です。
Isonokami no Marotari had to find a childbirth-easing shell supposedly owned by a swallow.
やねに のぼって つばめの すに 手を 入れたとき、足を すべらせて ドシーン！
When he climbed to the roof and reached into a swallow’s nest, he slipped and fell with a thud!
手に にぎっていたのは つばめの ふんでした。
In his hand was nothing but bird droppings.
かぐやひめの うわさを きいた みかどは、すぐに けらいを さしむけました。
When the Emperor heard of Kaguya-hime, he sent his men immediately.
かぐやひめが みかどに おつかえすれば、おじいさんを みぶんの たかい きぞくに すると いうのです。
He offered to make the old man a noble if Kaguya-hime would serve at court.
「この わしを きぞくに ですと？」
“You would make me a noble?” said the old man in disbelief.
でも かぐやひめは なき出しました。
But Kaguya-hime burst into tears.
「どうか わたしを 一日でも ながく、そばに おいて ください。」
“Please, let me stay by your side just one more day.”
「わしが わるかった。おまえが しあわせなら、わしらは ほかに なにも いらないよ。」
“You’re right. If you’re happy, that’s all we need.”
そして 三年が すぎました。
Three years passed.
かぐやひめは 月を 見ては 一人で ないて います。
Kaguya-hime often gazed at the moon and wept silently.
おじいさんと おばあさんは しんぱいで たまりません。
The old couple grew deeply worried.
「かぐやひめ。わけが あるなら、どうか はなしておくれ。」
“Kaguya-hime, if something’s troubling you, please tell us.”
かぐやひめは かなしそうに いいました。
With sadness in her eyes, she spoke.
「わたしは 月の せかいの もの。つぎの 十五やに、月に かえらなければ なりません。」
“I come from the world of the moon. On the next full moon, I must return.”
「いやだ。どこへも やらんぞ！」
“No! We won’t let you go anywhere!”
おじいさんと おばあさんは かぐやひめを だきしめました。
The old man and woman clung tightly to her.
とうとう 十五やに なりました。
At last, the night of the full moon arrived.
「月の せかいの ものなど おいはらってやる。」
“We’ll drive away anything from the moon!”
やしきの まわりは、みかどの へいしで いっぱいです。
The Emperor’s soldiers surrounded the house.
まよなかに なったとき、まぶしい ひかりが さしてて、天女たちが まいおりてきました。
At midnight, a brilliant light shone down, and moon maidens descended from the sky.
ひかりを 見た へいしたちは うごくことが できません。
The light left the soldiers frozen, unable to move.
かぐやひめは 天女の まつ 車に のりました。
Kaguya-hime stepped into the moon chariot waiting for her.
「かぐやひめ。いってしまうのか！」
“You’re really leaving us, Kaguya-hime?!”
おじいさんと おばあさんは む中で にわに はしり出しました。
The old couple rushed out into the garden in a daze.
「かぐやひめ。どこに いても いい。しあわせに くらしておくれ.....。」
“No matter where you go, please live happily…”
「お二人とも どうか おげん気で。」
“Please take care of yourselves.”
かぐやひめを のせた 車は、月の ひかりの 中に きえて いきました。
The chariot carrying Kaguya-hime disappeared into the moonlight.
