キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶが、顔を 見合わせ、じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんは、なきそうになった。
Cabetama Detective and Daikon Chief looked at each other helplessly. Jagabata-kun and Tomato-chan looked like they were about to cry.
そこは＜クモガクレからくにんじゃやしき＞の前だった。
They were standing in front of the Kumogakure Karakuri Ninja Mansion.
＜クモガクレからくにんじゃやしき＞は、今 大ひょうの 人気スポットだな。
The Kumogakure Karakuri Ninja Mansion was an incredibly popular attraction these days.
いろんな しかけを くぐりぬけて、ゴールまで たどりつけると、百万円の金のガマガエルが もらえるのだ。
If you could make it through all the traps and reach the goal, you would win a one-million-yen golden toad.
ただし、せいげん時間は 一時間。
However, you only had one hour to do it.
五人ひとくみで、ひとりでも しっぱいすると、そこから 先へは すすめない。
Groups of five were required, and even if one person failed, the whole team would be stopped right there.
入場は むりょうだけど、しっぱいすると、高い＜しっぱいりょう＞を とられる。
Entrance was free, but if you failed, you had to pay a hefty failure fee.
けれど、金のガマガエルに つられて、みんな、われも われもと ちょうせんした。
Still, the lure of the golden toad made everyone eager to try.
入場者は一時間ごとに 入れかえるから、一日に八くみしか 入場できない。
Since the participants will be changed each hour, only eight groups could enter per day.
だから、もうしこんでも、半年ぐらい たたないと、じゅんばんが 回ってこない。
Therefore, it usually takes about half a year after applying before your turn came up.
キャベたまたんていたちも、カボチャはかせを くわえて、五人で もうしこんでから 半年たって、やっと じゅんばんが 回ってきたのだ。
Cabetama Detective and his team, along with Kabocha Hakase (Pumpkin Professor), had finally gotten their chance six months after applying.
それなのに、さっき、カボチャはかせから、けんきゅうじょの かいだんから すべりおちて、こしを うって 動けないから、行かれないという れんらくが あったのだ。
But then—just now—they had received a message from Kabocha Hakase: he had fallen down the stairs at his lab, injured his back, and couldn’t move. He wouldn’t be able to come.
四人では 入れてもらえない。
With only four people, they wouldn’t be allowed to enter.
じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんが、なきそうに なったのも むりはない。
It was no wonder that Jagabata-kun and Tomato-chan looked so heartbroken.
キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶも、こまった。
Cabetama Detective and Daikon Chief were troubled too.
じつは、ふたりには、ある もくてきが あった。
In fact, the two of them had another purpose in coming here.
金のガマガエルは、まだ一ども とられていない。
The golden toad had never been won by anyone before.
社長のクモガクレサイゾウ氏は、たくさんの人から 高いしっぱいりょうを とって、大もうけしている。
The mansion’s owner, Kumogakure Saizo, had made a fortune collecting the high failure fees from countless visitors.
なぜ、金のガマガエルが とられないのか。
Why had no one ever won the golden toad?
ふたりは、そのひみつを さぐろうと しているのだ。
The two of them were hoping to uncover that secret.
さて、四人が とほに くれていると、「せっしゃが、なかまに なるでござる」だれかが 声を かけた。
As the four of them stood there in despair— “I will join your team, if you’ll have me.” Someone suddenly spoke.
見ると、にんじゃの かっこうを した わかい 男の人が、そばに 立っていた。
They looked to see a young man dressed as a ninja standing beside them.
「せっしゃは、サルトビゴスケと もうす。じつは、せっしゃも入場しようと したところ、ひとりでは だめだと ことわられたのでござる」
“I am called Sarutobi Gosuke,” he said. “I too tried to enter just now, but was told that I couldn’t do it alone.”
四人は 大よろこび。さっそく、男の人といっしょに 入場した。
The four were overjoyed and quickly agreed to team up with him.
入場すると、みんな、にんじゃふくに きがえなければ ならない。
Once inside the mansion, everyone had to change into ninja costumes.
男の人は、はじめから にんじゃふくなので、きがえなくても いい。
Since Gosuke was already wearing his, he didn’t need to change.
「よういが いいね」キャベたまたんていが いうと、「しごとを するときは、いつも このふくで ござるよ」サルトビゴスケは、わらって 答えた。
“You came prepared,” said Cabetama Detective. “I always wear this when working,” Gosuke replied with a laugh.
ことばづきまで、すっかり にんじゃに なりきっているようだ。
He seemed fully immersed in the ninja role—even the way he spoke was like a real ninja.
にんじゃやしきは、外から見ると りっぱな わらぶきやねの いっけん家だった。
From the outside, the ninja mansion looked like a fine, traditional thatched-roof house.
中は ものすごく 広くて、いくつもの へやや ろうかが あり、いろんな しかけが してあるのだと いう。
Inside, it was enormous—filled with countless rooms, hallways, and traps.
みんなは、げんかんから 中に 入いった。
The team entered through the front entrance.
「わあ、すごい！」トマトちゃんが さけんだ。
“Wow, amazing!” cried Tomato-chan.
そこは六じょうくらいの いろりのある へやだったが、その むこうは、たたみが 百まいぐらいは ありそうな 大広間だったのだ。
They had entered a six-tatami room with an irori (hearth), but beyond that was a huge hall that looked as if it had space for about a hundred tatami mats.
「それ、行け！」じゃがバタくんが、いきおいよく 大広間に かけよったが、とたんに、「いたたたた！」頭をぶつけて、ひっくりかえった。
“Charge!” yelled Jagabata-kun, running excitedly into the large hall— BAM! He hit his head and fell flat.
なんと、大広間は、かべに かいた絵だったのだ。
The large hall was actually a painting on the wall!
「ははは。これが さいしょの からくりだな」ゴスケが わらって、いろりに かかった てつびんを ひょいっと もち上げた。
“Ha ha ha. That’s the first trick,” laughed Gosuke, lifting the iron kettle hanging over the hearth.
そのとたん、大広間が かいてある かべが するすると 左右にひらいて、つぎのへやが あらわれた。
At that moment, the wall with the painted hall slid open to reveal the next room.
そのへやも たたみが しくてあって、正面に かけじくが 下がった とこの間が ある。
This room had tatami flooring and a tokonoma (alcove) with a hanging scroll.
右手は かべ、左手は ふすまだ。
There was a wall on the right and sliding doors on the left.
「なんだ これは」ふすまを あけた ダイコンけいぶが、したうちした。ふすまは、ただ かべに とりつけてあるだけだったのだ。
“Huh? What’s this?” said Daikon Chief, opening the sliding doors—only to find that they were fake, just attached to the wall.
「これじゃあ、先に すすめないぞ」
“We can’t go any further this way.”
「なに、だいじょうぶで ござるよ」ゴスケが、とこの間に 歩みよって、かけじくを はらりと もち上げると、その後ろの かべに、人ひとり 通れるくらいの あなが、ぽっかりと あいていた。
“Not to worry,” said Gosuke confidently. He lifted the hanging scroll, revealing a person-sized hole in the wall behind it.
サルトビゴスケは、にんじゃやしきの からくを よく知っているようだ。
It seemed that Gosuke knew the mansion’s tricks very well.
あなの むこうは せまい つうろに なっていて、しばらく行くと、広いろうかに 出た。
Beyond the hole was a narrow passageway, which soon opened into a wide corridor.
ろうかは、正面、左右、ななめ右、ななめ左と、五つの方向に のびていた。どれも、少し先の方で、かべに つきあたる。
The corridor branched in five directions—straight ahead, left, right, diagonally right, and diagonally left. Each branch appeared to end at a wall.
「これも、にんじゃやしきの からくりの ひとつ。正しいのは ひとつだけ。まちがった ろうかを 行くと、おとしあなに おちるでござる」
“This is another trick. Only one path is correct. The wrong ones lead to traps,” explained Gosuke.
そういうと、ゴスケは、人さしゆびで、五つの ろうかの ゆかを ひとつずつ こすって、見くらべはじめた。
He began rubbing the floor of each path with his finger.
「よし、こっちだ」ゴスケは、ななめ右の ろうかを ゆびさした。
“Here—it’s this one,” he said, pointing to the diagonally right corridor.
「どうして わかるの？」トマトちゃんが 聞いた。
“How do you know?” asked Tomato-chan.
「かんたんで ござるよ。この ろうかが 一番ほこりが 少なかった。つまり、人が たくさん通っている しょうこ。だから、ここを 行けば だいじょうぶ」
“Simple. This path had the least dust—meaning many people have walked this way. It must be correct.”
ゴスケを 先頭に、五人は、ななめ右の ろうかを すすんでいった。
Led by Gosuke, the five of them proceeded down the chosen path.
やがて、行き止まりに なった。
Eventually they came to a dead end.
ゴスケが かべを どんと たたいた。すると、かべが くるりと 回転して、つぎの へやの 入り口が あらわれた。
Gosuke knocked on the wall, which rotated, revealing the entrance to the next room.
みんな、ほっとして、前を見た。そして、おどろいた。
They sighed in relief—then gasped in surprise.
目の前に、さいしょに見た かべにかかれた 大広間がが、じっさいに 広がっていたのだ。
Before them was the real version of the large hall they had seen painted earlier.
おどろいたのは、それだけでは なかった。
And that was not the only surprise.
百まいの たたみが、とつぜん、ばたばたばたっと へりから つぎつぎに もち上がっていき、いたのように まっすぐ 立った。
Suddenly, the tatami mats began folding up one by one, turning upright like planks.
立った たたみの上に また たたみが のっかって 高い かべとなり、そのかべが れつを つくって ずらずらずらっと ならんで つうろと なった。
Tatami mats stood upright on top of other tatami mats, forming tall walls. These walls lined up in rows, creating a passageway.
そして、そのつうろが まっすぐ すすんだり、右に おれたり、左に まがったり、行き止まりに なったりしながら へやじゅうに 広がって、たちまち ふくざつな めいろに なった。
The passageway extended straight ahead, then turned right, then left, sometimes ending in dead ends, spreading throughout the entire room—quickly becoming a complex maze.
きょだいな たたみの めいろだ！
It was a gigantic tatami maze!
「こんな めいろ、見たことないよ！」
“I’ve never seen a maze like this!”
「ここで まよったら、一時間ぐらい すぐたっちゃうわ！」
“We’ll be stuck here for an hour!”
「みんな、ここで しっぱいするに ちがいない」
“This is where everyone must fail.”
「うむ。あと 四十分ぐらいしか ないな」
“We only have about 40 minutes left!”
じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんが さけび、ダイコンけいぶが 頭をかかえ、キャベたまたんていが うで時計を見た。
Jagabata-kun and Tomato-chan cried out. Daikon Chief held his head, and Cabetama Detective checked his watch.
「せっしゃに おまかせを」ゴスケが、ひょいと たたみのへりに とびのった。
“Leave it to me,” said Gosuke, leaping onto the edges of the tatami.
「ふむ。ああ 行って、こう 行ってと..... よし」めいろを ぐるりと 見回すと、ゴスケは 大きく うなずいた。
“Hmm... go this way, then that way... okay!” After studying the maze, he nodded confidently.
そして、キャベたまたんていたちを ふりかえると、「さあ、せっしゃに ついてくるで ござる」いうなり、つなわたりのように、たたみの へりを すたすた 歩きだした。
“Follow me!” he called, walking skillfully along the edges.
「右に まがって。こんどは左。そこは まっすぐ。ああ、そっちへ 行っては だめ。行き止まりでござる」
“Turn right! Now left! Straight ahead! Don’t go that way—that’s a dead end!”
キャベたまたんていたちは、ゴスケに 教えられるとおりに 歩いていった。そうやって、十分ぐらいで めいろを 通りぬけることが できた。
Following Gosuke’s directions, the team made it through the maze in about ten minutes.
「たすかった。みんな、きみの おかげだ」
“You saved us! It’s all thanks to you.”
キャベたまたんていは、ゴスケの手を にぎった。ほかの みんなも 手をたたいた。
Cabetama Detective shook Gosuke’s hand. The others clapped.
「いや、たいしたことじゃない でござる」ゴスケは、てれくさそうに わらった。
“Oh, it was nothing,” Gosuke said modestly.
つぎは、左右が かべで、正面が ふすまの へやで、ふすまには、五羽のカモの絵が かいてある。
Next, they entered a room with walls on either side and a fusuma (sliding door) in front. The fusuma had paintings of five ducks.
ふすまを あけて つぎに すすむと、そこも まったく 同じへやだった。
Opening the fusuma led to an identical room.
その つぎの へやも、まったく おんなじ。
And another.
「ちょっと、このへや、前のへやより せまくなってない？」トマトちゃんが 首をひねった。
“Is it just me, or is each room getting smaller?” wondered Tomato-chan.
そう いわれてみると、たしかに てんじょうが ひくく、かべも せまってきているみたいだ。
She was right. The ceiling seemed lower, and the walls were closing in.
その つぎの へやで、はっきりわかった。
In the next room, it was clear.
こしを かがめなければ てんじょうに つかえてしまうし、体を ぴったり くっつけなければ、かべに ついてしまう。まったく 同じへやなのに、すすむに つれて せまくなっているのだ！
They had to crouch to avoid hitting the ceiling.
つぎの へやでは、りょう手 りょうひざを ついて よつんばいになり、その つぎの へやでは、とうとう 五人とも りょう手りょう足を のばして はらばいに なった。
In the next, they had to crawl on all fours.
てんじょうは 頭すれすれ、左右のかべは、五人が よこ一列に ならんでも ぎちぎちだった。へやというより、細長い はこに とじこめられたみたいで、前にも 後ろにも 右にも 左にも まったく うごけない！
By the next room, they had to lie flat, with barely enough space between the walls. They couldn’t move forward, backward, left, or right.
「うーむ。こんなの はじめてでござる」さすがのゴスケも、よわった顔。
“Even I’ve never seen a trap like this,” said a worried Gosuke.
「そうか！」キャベたまたんていが、いきなり さけんだ。
“Wait!” cried Cabetama Detective suddenly.
「ふすまのカモの絵は、これまで みんな 右をむいていた。でも、このへやでは、まん中の 一羽が 左をむいている。これが カギにちがいない。よし、やってみよう」
“On the fusuma, all the ducks were facing right. But here, the middle duck is facing left! That must be the clue. Let’s try it.”
キャベたまたんていは、うでを のばして、まん中の カモにペタンと 手をついた。
He reached out and pressed the left-facing duck.
そのとたん、ゆかが ぱっと ふたつに われて、五人は ドスンと ゆか下に おちてしまった。さいわい、そんなに ふかくは なかったので、けがは なかった。
Suddenly, the floor split open and the five of them fell through—but luckily it wasn’t too deep, and they weren’t hurt.
けれど、あたりは まっくら。
Everything was pitch dark.
「おぬしも なかなか やるな。せっしゃ、くらやみでも 目が見えるでござる。せっしゃに ついてくる でござる」ゴスケがいった。
“You’re quite clever. I can see even in the dark—follow me,” said Gosuke.
そこで、ゴスケのかたを トマトちゃんが、トマトちゃんのかたを じゃがバタくんが、じゃがバタくんのかたを ダイコンけいぶが、ダイコンけいぶのかたを キャベたまたんていが つかんで、イモムシみたいに 歩きだした。
Therefore, Tomato-chan grabbed Gosuke’s shoulder. Jagabata-kun grabbed Tomato-chan’s shoulder. Daikon Chief grabbed Jagabata-kun’s shoulder. Cabetama Detective grabbed Daikon Chief’s shoulder. They moved forward like a caterpillar.
ゆか下も めいろに なっていたが、ゴスケに ついて 右に行ったり 左にまがったり しているうちに、やがて つきあたりが 明るくなってきた。
The dark space was another maze, but following Gosuke, they turned right, left, and so on. Finally, the space ahead began to grow lighter.
ここは、かいだんで、のぼりきると、広い いたの間に 出た。
They climbed a set of stairs and emerged into a wide wooden-floored room.
「なによ、これ！」
“What is this?!”
「もう、だめだあ！」
“Darn it, what a mess!”
「くそっ、なんてこった！」
“Oh no, we’re doomed!”
「そろそろ 時間切れに なるぞ！」
“We’re running out of time!”
四人は、いっせいに さけんだ。
The four of them shouted all at once.
いたの間は、スキー場みたいに、きゅうな しゃめんに なっていたのだ。
The inside of the board room had turned into a steep slope like a ski slope.
のぼりきったところに、出口がある。
The exit was at the very top.
けれど、いたの間は つるつるで、手をかけれるものも ないから、とても そこまでは のぼれそうに ない。
But the board room was completely smooth, with nothing to grab onto, so it seemed impossible to climb up there.
「あきらめるのは、早いでござる」ゴスケが、ふところから 細いなわを ずるずると 引っぱりだした。
“It is too soon to give up,” Gosuke said, pulling out a thin rope from his pocket.
おなかに まいていたらしい。
It seemed he had it wrapped around his waist.
なわの先には、するどく とがった かきづめのようなものが ついている。
At the end of the rope was a sharp claw-like hook.
ゴスケは、なわを ぐるぐる ふりまわし、いきおいを つけて さっと てんじょうに むかって なげた。
Gosuke swung the rope in circles to gain momentum and then flung it swiftly toward the ceiling.
かぎづめが、ぐさっと 出口のそばに つきささった。
The claw embedded itself firmly near the exit.
なわを ぐいっと 引っぱって、かぎづめが ぬけないのを たしかめると、ゴスケは、なわを つたいながら、本物の にんじゃのように、すいすいと いたの間を のぼっていき、あっという間に 出口に たどりついた。
Gosuke tugged the rope to make sure the claw wouldn’t come loose, then, like a real ninja, he effortlessly climbed the rope and reached the exit in no time.
「せっしゃの まねを して、のぼるでござる」ゴスケに うながされて、まず、トマトちゃんが のぼった。つづいて、じゃがバタくん。ダイコンけいぶも、とちゅうで なんどか すべりおちそうに なったが、なんとか のぼりおえた。
“Climb the rope the way I did,” Gosuke instructed. Tomato-chan went up first, followed by Jagabata-kun. Daikon Inspector slipped a few times along the way but managed to climb up somehow.
キャベたまたんていは、なんど やっても うまくいかないので、しかたなく、おなかになわを まきつけて、上から みんなに 引っぱりあげてもらった。
Detective Cabbagehead struggled and failed repeatedly, so in the end, he had to tie the rope around his waist and have everyone pull him up from above.
それから 五人は、うすぐらい てんじょううらを すすんでいった。
Then, the five of them proceeded through the dim space above the ceiling.
しばらく行くと、大きなあなが あいているところに出た。
After a while, they reached a large hole.
のぞいてみると、目の下に、金のガマガエルが 見えた！
Peeking through, they saw the golden toad below!
「ここだ！」
“This is it!”
五人は、ゴスケを先頭に、なわをつたって、金のガマガエルが おいてある へやに おりたった。
Led by Gosuke, they climbed down the rope into the room where the golden toad was kept.
金のガマガエルは、金の まきものを くわえて、へやの まん中に ある 台にのっていた。
The golden toad was holding a golden scroll and sat atop a pedestal in the center of the room.
へやじゅうが、金色に かがやいていた。
The entire room glowed with a golden light.
「やったあ！」
“We did it!”
「やったわね！」
“Yes, we did!”
かん声を あげて かけよろうと する、じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんを おしのけて、ゴスケが 前に出た。
As Jagabata-kun and Tomato-chan shouted and rushed forward, Gosuke pushed past them.
「やっと、見つけたぞ」ゴスケは、うれしそうに つぶやきながら、台に 歩みより、金のガマガエルに手をのばした。
“I finally found it,” Gosuke muttered happily as he approached the pedestal and reached for the golden toad.
そのとたん、台のまわりの ゆかが、はば二メートルばかり 丸く切りとられたように なって ストンと おちてしまった。後には 台だけが、黒ぐろとした ドーナツ形の あなの まん中に のこっているばかり。
At that very moment, the floor around the pedestal — about two meters wide — suddenly dropped away, leaving only the pedestal in the middle of a black, donut-shaped hole.
ゴスケのすがたは どこにも ない。
Gosuke was nowhere to be seen.
「おとしあなだ！気をつけろ」ダイコンけいぶが、みんなを 下がらせた。
“It’s a trapdoor! Be careful!” Daikon Inspector pulled everyone back.
「そうか、そういうことだったのか！」キャベたまたんていが、さけんだ。
“I see, so that’s how it works!” shouted Detective Cabbagehead.
「金のガマガエルがある台に 近づくと、おとしあなに はまるんだ。だから、これまで だれも 金のガマガエルを とれなかったんだ！」
“If you get within two meters of the pedestal, the trapdoor activates. That’s why no one has been able to take the golden toad before!”
「その とおり」太い声がして、むかいがわの ふすまを あけて だれか 出てきた。
“Exactly,” came a deep voice. The opposite sliding door opened, and someone entered.
テレビに よく出ている 社長の クモガクレサイゾウだ。
It was Saizo Kumogakure, the president who often appeared on TV.
「ガマガエルの 台の二メートルいないに 近づくと、おとしあなの スイッチが 入いって、そのまま出口まで トンネルをすべっていくように なっている。そこで みんな、しっぱいを させるのさ。さあ、あんたたちも しっぱいりょうを はらってもらおうか」
“If you step within two meters of the pedestal, the trapdoor activates, and you slide down a tunnel all the way to the exit. That’s how we make sure everyone fails. Now then, you’ll all need to pay the failure fee.”
「まだ、しっぱいは していないから、その ひつようは、ないでござる」そのとき、上のほうから ゴスケの声が ふってきた。
“We haven’t failed yet, so there’s no need for that,” came Gosuke’s voice from above.
見ると、てんじょうから たれさがっている なわに つかまっていた。
Everyone looked up to see Gosuke hanging from the rope dangling from the ceiling.
おとしあなに おちるしゅんかん、ひょいっと とびあがって、なわをつかんだのだ。
At the moment he had fallen, he had jumped and grabbed the rope.
「金のガマガエルは、せっしゃが もらう」
“The golden toad belongs to me now.”
「そうは いかん。あれがないと、しっぱいりょうで もうけることができないからな」クモガクレサイゾウは、ふところから しゅりけんを とりだすと、大きく ふりかぶった。
“Not so fast. Without that, I can’t make money from the failure fees,” Saizo Kumogakure growled as he pulled out a shuriken and raised it high.
「その なわを 切ってやる！」
“I’ll cut that rope!”
「やめろ！」キャベたまたんていが、さっと ずきを ぬぐと、頭のはっぱを 一まい、べりっと ちぎって、クモガクレサイゾウ めがけて なげつけた。
“Stop!” Detective Cabbagehead shouted. Quickly, he removed his cap, tore off a cabbage leaf, and threw it at Saizo Kumogakure.
はっぱは、しゅりけんを なげようとした クモガクレサイゾウの顔に べたっと はりついた。
The leaf stuck right to Saizo’s face just as he was about to throw the shuriken.
「あっ、くそっ、わあっ」
“Ah, darn it—whoa!”
しゅりけんは とんでもない 方向に それ、クモガクレサイゾウは、なげた いきおいで 前のめりに よろよろっと よろめいたかと 思うと、頭から おとしあなに おちこんでしまった。
The shuriken flew off in the wrong direction, and Saizo, thrown off balance, stumbled forward and fell headfirst into the trapdoor.
「たすかったでござる」
“That was close.”
すすっと なわを おりてきた ゴスケは、金のガマガエルを つかむと、「わけあって、これは せっしゃが もらっていくでござる。では ごめん」
Sliding down the rope, Gosuke grabbed the golden toad. “For certain reasons, I will be taking this,” he said, bowing politely.
ぴょこんと 頭を下げて、また すすっと なわをのぼっていき、てんじょうの あなにひょいっと もぐりこんで、あっという間に すがたを けしてしまった。
Then he quickly climbed back up the rope, slipped through a hole in the ceiling, and vanished in an instant.
キャベたまたんていも ダイコンけいぶも トマトちゃんも じゃがバタくんも、あっけに とられて、ただ見おくるばかりだった。

キャベたまたんていじむしょに、サルトビゴジュロウという 人から、手紙が とどいた。
A letter arrived at Detective Cabbagehead’s office from someone named Sarutobi Gojuuro.
お見せしたいものが あるので、やしきに おいでくださいと 書いてある。
It said, “I have something I would like to show you. Please come to my mansion.”
住所は、＜クモガクレからくりにんじゃやしき＞と同じところだ。
The address was the same as the former Kumogakure Mechanical Ninja Mansion.
「サルトビゴスケと かんけいの ある人かもしれないな」そう思った キャベたまたんていは、みんなで 行ってみることにした。
“Perhaps this person is related to Sarutobi Gosuke,” thought Detective Cabbagehead. The group decided to visit.
来てみて、みんな びっくりした。
When they arrived, they were amazed.
＜クモガクレからくりにんじゃやしき＞の あったところが、りっぱな おやしきに かわっていたのだ。
The site where the Kumogakure Mechanical Ninja Mansion had stood was now a splendid estate.
「ようこそ、おいでくださいました」サルトビゴジュウロウさんが、出むかえてくれて、広間に あんないしてくれた。
“Welcome,” Sarutobi Gojuuro greeted them and led them to the grand hall.
広間のテーブルを見て、みんな、もう一ど びっくり。
They were surprised again by looking the table in the grand hall.
サルトビゴスケが もっていった 金のガマガエルが、おいてあったのだ！
There, on the table, was the very golden toad that Gosuke had taken!
「さいきん、わたしの ごせんぞさまが 書いたものが 見つかりまして、そこに あなたがたのことが 記されていました」そう いって、ゴジュウロウさんが、話しはじめた。
“Recently, some writings by my ancestor were discovered. In them, your deeds were mentioned,” Gojuuro began.
「むかし、モモヤマの 里に、サルトビと クモガクレという にんじゃの家が ありました.....」
“Long ago, in the village of Momoyama, there were two ninja families — Sarutobi and Kumogakure…”
ふたつの家は どちらも びんぼうだった。
Both families were poor.
けれど、あるとき、サルトビ家が 幸運を招きよせる 金のガマガエルを 手に入れた。
One day, the Sarutobi family obtained a lucky golden toad.
それからというもの、サルトビ家には 運がめぐってきて、金持ちになった。
From then on, fortune favored them, and they became wealthy.
それを ねたんだ クモガクレ家は、金のガマガエルを ぬすんでしまった。
Envious, the Kumogakure family stole the golden toad.
すると、クモガクレ家に 運がむいてきて、金もちになり、ぎゃくに サルトビ家は びんぼうに なってしまった。
From then on, luck shifted — the Kumogakure family became wealthy, while the Sarutobi family grew poor.
「そこで、ごせんぞの サルトビゴスケが、金のガマガエルを とりもどそうと、クモガクレ家に しのびこんだのです......」
“My ancestor Sarutobi Gosuke tried to retrieve the golden toad by sneaking into the Kumogakure estate…”
けれど、ゴスケは見つかってしまい、おいかけられた。
But Gosuke was discovered and chased.
なんとか 山の中の ほらあなに にげこんだが、ほらあなを 通りぬけると、目の前に＜クモガクレからくりにんじゃやしき＞が 広がっていた。
He managed to escape into a cave, but upon emerging, he found himself in the Kumogakure Mechanical Ninja Mansion — 500 years in the future.
おどろいて、いろいろ しらべてみると、そこは 五百年後の世界で、クモガクレ家の しそんの クモガクレサイゾウが、金のガマガエルで 大もうけしていることが わかった。
Amazed, he investigated and learned that the descendant, Saizo Kumogakure, was making a fortune with the golden toad.
ゴスケは、からくやしきに しのびこんで、金のガマガエルを とりもどそうとしたが、けいかいが きびしくて、うまくいかなかった。
Gosuke attempted to steal it back but couldn’t due to tight security.
そこで、表から入場して、しかけを くぐりぬけ、ガマガエルを もらっていくことに した。
So, he chose to enter openly and overcome the traps to reclaim it.
こうして、キャベたまたんていたちの きょう力で、しゅびよく 金のガマガエルを とりもどした ゴスケは、ほらあなから 元の世界にもどった。
With the help of Detective Cabbagehead and friends, he successfully recovered the golden toad and returned to his own time through the cave.
そして、このことを しそんのために 書きのこしたのだ。
He documented everything for his descendants.
「サルトビゴスケは、本物のにんじゃ だったのか。だから、にんじゃやしきの からくのことを、よく知ってたんだな」ダイコンけいぶが いった。
“So Sarutobi Gosuke was a real ninja. No wonder he knew all about the mansion’s traps,” said Daikon Inspector.
「でも、どうして＜クモガクレからくりにんじゃやしき＞が なくなって、こんなりっぱな おやしきに なっちゃったんだろう」じゃがバタくんが、首をかしげた。
“But why did the mansion disappear and this grand estate appear instead?” wondered Jagabata-kun.
「金のガマガエルが もどったので、また サルトビ家が ゆたかになり、クモガクレ家が おちぶれたからだよ。五百年後、つまり今の クモガクレ家の しそんには、からくりにんじゃやしきを つくれるだけの お金がないのさ」キャベたまたんていが、いった。
“Because the golden toad returned to the Sarutobi family, making them wealthy again, while the Kumogakure family fell into ruin. Now, 500 years later, the Kumogakure family no longer has the means to rebuild the ninja mansion,” explained Detective Cabbagehead.
「そのとおりです」ゴジュウロウさんが うなずいた。
“Exactly,” Gojuuro nodded.
「もう ひとつ、あなたがたに お見せたいものが あります。おーい、あれを もってこい！」
“There is one more thing I would like to show you. Bring it here!” he called.
すると、広間のドアがあき、ぬのをかぶせた おぼんを ささげて、だれか 入ってきた。
Then, the door opened, and someone entered carrying a tray covered with cloth.
その顔を 見て、みんな、あっと おどろいた。
When they saw his face, everyone gasped.
なんと それは、クモガクレサイゾウだった。
It was Saizo Kumogakure.
どうやら、おちぶれて、サルトビ家の 使用人に なっているようだ。
It seemed he had fallen so far as to now work as a servant for the Sarutobi family.
「これは、ごせんぞの サルトビゴスケが つくらせて、金のガマガエルとともに、サルトビ家の たからものとして、いつまでも だいじに するようにと、いいのこしたものです」
“This is something my ancestor Sarutobi Gosuke had made, to be treasured with the golden toad for generations,” Gojuuro explained.
ゴジュウロウさんが、さっと ぬのを とった。
He whipped off the cloth.
その とたん、金色の光が ぱあっと あたりに きらめいた。
At that moment, golden light sparkled brightly.
キャベたまたんていも ダイコンけいぶも、トマトちゃんも じゃがバタくんも、おどろきのあまり、口をぽかんと あけた。
Detective Cabbagehead, Daikon Inspector, Tomato-chan, and Jagabata-kun stared in amazement.
それは、金でできた 一まいの キャベツの はっぱだった。
It was a single golden cabbage leaf.
