むかし むかし いっぴきの さるが たべものを さがしていた。
Once upon a time, a monkey was searching for food.
すると やはり たべものを さがしにきた かたつむりに であった。
He encountered a snail also searching for food.
さるは かたつむりが のっそり のっそり はっているのを みて、ばかにして いった。
Seeing the snail crawling slowly, the monkey mocked him and said,
「こりゃ こりゃあ かたつむりさん。 この すばしっこい おれさまでさえ たべものを みつけるのは たいへんなんだ。おまえさんみたいに のろのろ はってて、いちにちで おれの さんぽぶんも いかないっていうんじゃ、たべものを みつけられる わけないよなぁ」
"Hey, hey, Mr. Snail. Even I, as quick as I am, have a hard time finding food. If you're crawling around so slowly, not even covering as much ground as I do on my daily walks, there's no way you can find food."
かたつむりは こたえた。
The snail replied,
「ぼくだって ちゃんと たべものを みつけて たべてるよ。そんな ばかにしたふうに いうんなら、かけっこ してみようよ」
"I do find food and eat it properly. If you’re going to mock me like that, how about we have a race?"
さるは ふんと はなを ならして こたえた。
The monkey snorted and replied,
「いつ やるって いうんだい？」
"When do you want to do this?"
かたつむりは いった。
The snail said,
「みっかたったら また ここで あって、あの みっつの やまと みっつの たにを さきに こえたほうが かちって いうことに しようよ」
"Let's meet here again in three days, and whoever crosses those three mountains and three valleys first will be the winner."
さるは いった。
The monkey said,
「おまえさんの すきなように するさ。おまえなんかに おれさまが まけるわけが ないさ」
"Whatever you like. There's no way I could lose to someone like you."
そして、さると かたつむりは それぞれ うちへ かえっていった。
So, the monkey and the snail each returned home.
さるは、うちに もどると、いきようようと きに のぼり、みを むしゃむしゃ たべると、ねてしまった。
The monkey returned home, climbed a tree with great enthusiasm, ate some fruit voraciously, and fell asleep.
かたつむりは うちに もどると、さっそく しんるいえんじゃを あつめて そうだんした。
The snail, on the other hand, went home and immediately gathered his relatives and friends for a discussion.
かたつむりは みんなに いった。
The snail said to everyone,
「いいかい。こういうふうに するんだよ。ぼくたち みんなが さきに みっつの やまと みっつの たにに ちらばっておくのさ。
"Listen, here’s what we’ll do. All of us will scatter in advance across the three mountains and three valleys.
さるが はしりつかれて、『おーい！ かたつむり、どこまで きたかい？』って きいたら、さるより さきに いる なかまが 『ここまで きたよ』って こたえるんだ。うしろに いる なかまは こたえちゃ だめだよ。こうすれば ぼくたち きっと かてるさ」
When the monkey, exhausted from running, calls out, 'Hey! Snail, how far have you come?' one of us ahead of the monkey will answer, 'I've made it here.' Those behind the monkey must not answer. This way, we will surely win."
そこで かたつむりたちは さっそく でかけて いった。
So, the snails set out immediately.
そして みっつの やまと みっつの たにの あちこちに ちらばった。
They scattered all over the three mountains and three valleys.
みっかたって、さると かたつむりは やくそくの ばしょい やってきた。
Three days later, the monkey and the snail met at the promised place.
さるが「いくかい？」と いうと、かたつむりは こたえた。
When the monkey asked, "Ready to go?" the snail replied,
「みっつ かぞえて からだよ。いち、に、さん、」
"Count to three first. One, two, three."
さるは くさを かきわけ ちかみちをして はしると、すぐに いちばんめの やまの なかほどまで やってきた。
The monkey quickly pushed through the grass and ran, soon reaching the middle of the first mountain.
さるは ひといき いれて、かたつむりを よんだ。
The monkey took a breath and called out to the snail.
「おーい、かたつむり、おまえ どこまで きた？」
"Hey, snail, how far have you come?"
すると、さるより さきに いる かたつむりが こたえた。
Then, the snail ahead of the monkey answered,
「ここまで きたよ、さるさんよー」
"I've made it here, Mr. Monkey."
さるは びっくりして また かけだすと、やまの ちょうじょうまで かけのぼって かたつむりを よんだ。
The monkey was astonished and dashed off again, running to the top of the mountain and called out to the snail.
「おーい、かたつむり、どこまで きたかい？」
"Hey, snail, how far have you come?"
すると、さるより さきに いる かたつむりが こたえた。
The snail ahead of the monkey answered,
「ここまで きたよ」
"I've made it here."
さるは いっそう いっしょうけんめい はしって、はじめの やまを はんぶんくらい くだった ところで また よんだ。
The monkey ran even harder, reaching halfway down the first mountain, and called out again.
「おーい、かたつむり、こんどは どこだ？」
"Hey, snail, where are you now?"
すると、やはり さきに いる かたつむりが こたえた。
Again, the snail ahead of the monkey answered,
「ここまで きたよ！」
"I've made it here!"
さるは こんどこそは おいこすぞと、いっしょうけんめい はしったが、よぶたびに さきにいる かたつむりが へんじを する。
Determined to overtake the snail, the monkey ran as hard as he could, but every time he called out, the snail ahead of him answered.
さるは かたつむりを おいこそうと、あんまり いそいで はしったので、まだ みっつめの やまに つかないうちに、くたくたになって はしれなくなってしまった。
In his haste to overtake the snail, the monkey ran so fast that he became exhausted before reaching the third mountain and could no longer run.
そして とうとう さるは へたばって しまった。
Finally, the monkey collapsed, completely worn out.
こうして かたつむりは かけっこに かったんだよ。
And so, the snail won the race
いっぽも はしったり しなかったのにね。
without having run a single step.
