かずもう KAZUSUMOU Mosquito Sumo
あるひ、とのさまが、けらいの たかろうじゃに いいました。
One day, the lord said to his retainer Takarouja,
「めしつかいを ひとり ふやしたいから、みつけてまいれ。」
“I want to increase the number of my servants. Find someone suitable.”
そこで さっそく たかろうじゃは、おおぜいの ひとが とおる かいどうへ むかいました。
Takarouja immediately headed to the main road where many people passed by.
（よさそうな ひとが いたら、はなしかけてみよう。お、むこうから みょうな やつが くるぞ。）
“If I find someone decent, I’ll talk to them. Oh, there’s a strange-looking fellow coming this way.”
そのひとは、かが にんげんに ばけている 「かのせい」でした。
This person was actually a mosquito spirit disguised as a human.
みやこに いって、ひとの ちを すう つもりなのです。
The mosquito spirit intended to go to the capital to suck people’s blood.
そうとは しらない たかろうじゃが、
Unaware of this, Takarouja asked,
「もしもし、これから どこへ いくのですか？」
と たずねると、
“Excuse me, where are you heading?”
「みやこに のぼり どこかで やとってもらおうと おもっています。」
“I’m heading to the capital, hoping to find work there.”
と こたえるでは ありませんか。
The mosquito spirit replied.
「それならば ちょうどいい！ わたしの しゅじんは えらい とのさまです。やとって あげましょう。」
“Well, that’s perfect! My master is a great lord. I’ll hire you.”
かのせいは よろこんで、「ぜひ おねがいします。」と あたまを さげました。
The mosquito spirit was pleased and bowed his head, saying, “Please do.”
たかろうじゃが もどると、とのさまは、「ごくろうだった。めしつかいは どこだ？」と たずねました。
When Takarouja returned, the lord asked, “Good job. Where is the new servant?”
「あちらで またせております。」
“He is waiting over there.”
とのさまは かのせいを ちらっと みて、「やつに わしのことを なんと いった？」と ききました。
The lord glanced at the mosquito spirit and asked Takarouja, “What did you tell him about me?”
「『えらい とのさま』と つたえました。」
“I told him you were a great lord.”
とのさまは まんぞくそうに うなずきました。
The lord nodded in satisfaction.
「とくぎは すもうだそうです。」
“He said his specialty is sumo.”
「なんと！ すもうか！」
“What! Sumo?”
すもうずきの とのさまは おおよろこびです。
The lord, who loved sumo, was delighted.
さっそく すもうの うでまえを たしかめようと、とのさまが きものを 一まい ぬぎました。
Immediately, the lord took off one of his robes to test the mosquito spirit’s sumo skills.
「わしが あいてに なる。たかろうじゃ、ぎょうじを しろ。」
“I will be your opponent. Takarouja, act as the referee.”
たかろうじゃは おうぎを ひろげました。
Takarouja spread out a fan.
「おーてー。」
“Ready!”
「いいやあ やっとな。」
“Yeah, let’s do it.”
「いいやあ やっとな。」
“Yeah, let’s do it.”
とのさまが かのせいに つかみかかろうとすると......。
As the lord tried to grab the mosquito spirit…
ぷう～～。
Puff!
かのせいは、とのさまの まわりを ぐるぐる まわりました。
The mosquito spirit buzzed around the lord.
そして、はねを ひろげ、くちばしが ぴよーんと のびたかと おもうと、めにも とまらぬ はやさで、とのさまを さしました。
Then, it spread its wings and extended its proboscis, and with incredible speed, it stabbed the lord.
とのさまは たおれそうになりましたが、たかろうじゃが しかと だきとめました。
The lord nearly collapsed, but Takarouja caught him firmly.
「とのさま、どうなさいました？」
“What happened, my lord?”
「やつめ、りょうてを ひろげて とびかかってきたと おもったら、からだが ちくちくして、あたまが くらくらした。」
“That creature opened its arms and jumped at me. Then my body felt prickly and my head started spinning.”
とのさまは たかろうじゃに いいました。
The lord said to Takarouja,
「ううむ、おかしい。やつの くには どこだ？」
“This is strange. Where is he from?”
「ごうしゅうもりやまと もうしておりました。」
“He said he’s from Goushu Moriyama.”
「それで わかった！ ごうしゅうもりやまは かの おおい ところ。ははあ、あいつは かのせいに ちがいない。」
“Now I understand! Goushu Moriyama is full of mosquitoes. He must be a mosquito spirit.”
「かに まけるとは くやしい。」
“Losing to a mosquito is infuriating.”
とのさまは、なんとか かつ ほうほうは ないものかと かんがえました。
The lord thought of a way to win.
「そうじゃ！ かならば、かやの なかで すもうを とればいい！」
“That’s it! We’ll wrestle inside a mosquito net!”
たかろうじゃは くびを よこに ふりました。
Takarouja shook his head.
「かは かやの そと。それでは すもうに なりません。」
“The mosquito would be outside the net. That wouldn’t be sumo.”
「そうじゃ！ かならば、かやりびを たいて すもうを とればいい！」
“Then we’ll light a mosquito-repellent incense and wrestle!”
たかろうじゃは くびを よこに ふりました。
Takarouja shook his head again.
けむたがって、よってこないでしょう。それでは すもうに なりません。」
“The smoke would keep it away. That wouldn’t be sumo.”
「そうじゃ！ かは かぜに よわいはず。こうしたは どうだ？」
“Right! Mosquitoes are weak against wind. How about this?”
とのさまは たかろうじゃに、こそこそと みみうちしました。
The lord whispered to Takarouja,
たかろうじゃは、それを きいて、おおきく うなずきました。
who nodded in agreement.
「もう いちばん、すもうを とろう。」
“Let’s have one more sumo match.”
とのさまは そういって、にやりと わらいました。
The lord grinned.
うちわを かくしもっているのです。
He had a fan hidden behind him.
「おーてー！」
“Ready!”
「いいやあ いいやあ やっとな。」
“Yeah, let’s do it.”
「いいやあ いいやあ やっとな。」
“Yeah, let’s do it.”
とのさまが、かくしていた うちわを だし、「やっとな！」と かけごえを かけて、あおぎました。
The lord took out his hidden fan and shouted, “Let’s do it!” as he fanned the air.
すると かのせいは、よろよろよろと あとずさりしました。
The mosquito spirit staggered backward.
「やっとな！」
“Let’s do it!”
もう いちど とのさまが あおぐと、かのせいは かぜに あおられて、ふわふわと おろけます。
The lord fanned again, and the mosquito spirit wobbled and floated away.
「やっとな！」
“Let’s do it!”
かのせいは、とうとう どひょうの そとで ひっくりかえってしまいました。
Finally, the mosquito spirit was blown out of the ring and fell over.
「かったぞ、かったぞ！」
“I won! I won!”
とのさまは おおとろこびです。
The lord was overjoyed.
はしゃいでいる とのさまの うしろで、かのせいが むっくり おきあがりました。
But behind the celebrating lord, the mosquito spirit stood up.
そして、とのさまの うでを むんずと つかんで、ふりまわし はじめたのです。
It grabbed the lord’s arm and began to spin him around.
「あぶない あぶない。」
“Danger! Danger!”
とのさまは あわてました。
The lord panicked.
「えい！」
“Take this!”
かのせいは とのさまを ほうりなげ、「まいったか！」と いうと、ぷう～～と、とんでいって しまいました。
The mosquito spirit threw the lord, saying, “Did you give up?” and then buzzed away.
とのさまは おこって、「こんな うちわ、やくにも たたない！」と なげすてると、とつぜん たかろうじゃの うでを つかんで、ふりまわしました。
やつあたりです。
The lord, angry, threw away the fan saying, “This useless thing!” and suddenly grabbed Takarouja’s arm, spinning him around in frustration.
「あぶない あぶない。」
“Danger! Danger!”
あわてた たかろうじゃを、とのさまは、「えい！」と ほうりなげました。
もう やけくそです。
In his desperation, the lord threw Takarouja, who is panicking.
「ぷう～～。」
“Buzz…”
とのさまは かのせいの まねを しながら、 いってしまいました。
The lord imitated the mosquito spirit and left, buzzing.
ぷう～～～。ぷう～～～。
Buzz… Buzz…
