(We had a fight, but...)
ぼくと しんごくんは、毎日、休み時間に、どろだんご作りを している。
Shingo and I make mud dumplings together every day during recess.
丸くて ぴかぴかの どろだんごを 作ったら、見せっこするんだ。
After we each make a round, shiny mud dumpling, we show them to each other.
でも、きょう、ぼくたちは、けんかをしてしまった。
But today, we ended up having a fight.
しんごくんが作った どろだんごを、ぼくが まちがって ふんでしまったからだ。
It happened because I accidentally stepped on the mud dumpling Shingo made.
「ひどいよ、つよしくん！」
"That’s so mean, Tsuyoshi!"
しんごくんが、すごいいきおいで 言った。
Shingo shouted at me, really upset.
「わざとじゃないもん！」
"I didn’t do it on purpose!"
ぼくは、強く言いかえした。
I shouted back.
ぼくの 足の近くに、どろだんごが おいてあるなんて、思わなかったんだ。
I hadn’t even noticed the mud dumpling placed so close to my feet.
すると、「もう、ごうくんと あそびたくない。」と言って、しんごくんは、走って行ってしまった。
Then Shingo said, "I don’t want to play with you anymore," and ran off.
じゅぎょうが はじまった。
Class started.
しんごくんと 目が合ったけど、すぐに そらしちゃった。
Our eyes met once, but we both quickly looked away.
つぎの休み時間になった。
Then the next recess came.
いつもなら、「どろだんご、作りに行こう。」って さそうけど、今は、さそえない。
Usually, I'd invite him by saying, "Let’s go make mud dumplings!"
But today, I couldn’t.
だって、けんかを しているから。
Because we were still fighting.
ぼくだって、おこってるんだ。
I was angry too.
でも、なぜか、なみだが 出そうになった。
But somehow, I felt like I was about to cry.
家に帰ると、しんごくんと けんかをする前の ことが、頭にうかんできた。
When I got home, I kept remembering the fun times before we fought.
どうすれば どろだんごが ぴかぴかになるか、ひみつを 教え合って 楽しかったな。
How we taught each other the secrets to making our mud dumplings extra shiny.
ぴかぴかに できあがったら、ずっと かざっておきたいねって 話したな。
How we said we wanted to keep our perfect dumplings on display forever.
ぼくは、つぶやいた。
I whispered to myself,
「けんかを したけど、ぼく、やっぱりー。」
"We had a fight, but... deep down, I still—"
つぎの日、ぼくは、思い切って、しんごくんに 話しかけた。
The next day, I gathered my courage and talked to Shingo.
「きのうは、ごめんね。大切な どろだんごを ふんじゃって。」
"I’m sorry about yesterday. I didn’t mean to step on your special mud dumpling."
すると、しんごくんは言った。「ぼくも、あんなに おこって、ごめんね。わざとじゃないって、分かってたのに。」
Then Shingo said, "I’m sorry too. I knew you didn’t do it on purpose, but I still got so mad."
その後、ぼくたちは、またいっしょに どろだんごを 作るやくそくをした。
After that, we promised to make mud dumplings together again.
丸くて ぴかぴかの どろだんごを 作って、見せっこするんだ。
We’ll make round, shiny mud dumplings and show them off to each other.
