(The Secret of the Disappeared Princess Kyabetama-hime)
ある日、キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶ、トマトちゃんと じゃがバタくんが、じむしょで おしゃべりしていると、とつぜん、てんじょうが ぷくりと ふくらんだ。
One day, Detective Kyabetama, Inspector Daikon, Tomato-chan, and Jagabata-kun were chatting in their office when, suddenly, a bulge appeared in the ceiling.
ふくらみは どんどん 大きくなっていき、とうとう大きな ミルク色の玉になって、ふわりと なかに ういた。
The bulge grew larger and larger until it finally became a big milky-white balloon floating in the air.
「なんなの、あれ」
“What is that?”
「ふうせんみたいだな」
“Looks like a balloon.”
「うむ。まさしく ふうせんに ちがいない」
“Indeed. It must be a balloon.”
「でも、ただの ふうせんじゃないぞ」
“But it’s no ordinary balloon.”
ふうせんは、ふわふわと ただよってきて、びっくりしている 四人に おおいかぶさったかとおもうと、あっというまに のみこんでしまった。
The balloon floated toward the four surprised friends, and in the blink of an eye, it swallowed them whole.
四人を のみこんだ ふうせんは そのまま じむしょの まどから 外へとびだしていった。
With the four of them inside, the balloon floated out through the office window.
しばらく ふわふわと ちゅうを ただよっていたが、とつぜん、ひゅーっと きゅうこうかしはじめた。
It drifted through the air for a while, but suddenly began to plummet.
うわわわわわわああぁぁぁ！
“Waaaaahhhh!”
四人の ひめいを のせて ぐんぐん らっかしていった ふうせんは、やがて、べちゃっと へんな音を たてて、なにかの上に おちてとまった。
With their screams echoing, the balloon rapidly descended and landed with a strange splat on something.
やれやれと おもったとたん、ふすっと とがったものが つきささった。
Just as they thought the ordeal was over, a sharp object pierced the balloon.
ふうせんは、ぱーんと いきおいよく はじけ、四人は、ざばざばっと 水の中に なげだされた。
Pop! The balloon burst with great force, and the four of them were tossed into the water.
よく見ると、そこは、どこかのおやしきの 池の中だった。
Looking around, they realized they had fallen into a pond within some grand mansion.
「ふおっ ふおっ ふおっ。よくきたな」
“Ho ho ho! Welcome.”
橋の上に、やりをもった おじいさんが 立っていた。
An old man holding a spear stood on a bridge.
カボチャはかせのようだ。いや、ちがう。よくにているけれど、頭の上に へんてこなものが のっかっているし、きているものも、おかしい。
He looked like Professor Pumpkin—no, wait, he was different. Though they resembled each other, this man wore strange clothing and had an odd object on his head.
すると、「やあ、みんな、おつかれさん」おじいさんの うしろから、だれかが すがたをあらわした。カボチャはかせだ。
Just then, someone appeared behind the old man. It was Professor Pumpkin!
「こちらは、わしのご先祖のカボチャざえもんさま。そして ここは、そのおやしきじゃよ」
“This is my ancestor, Lord Pumpkin-Zaemon. And this is his mansion,” Professor Pumpkin explained.
「はかせの ご先祖さま？ ということは.....」
“Your ancestor? That means…”
キャベたまたんていが、はっとしたように カボチャはかせを見た。
Detective Kyabetama looked at Professor Pumpkin in surprise.
「さよう。ここは 三百年まえの世界じゃ」カボチャはかせは、うなずいて、池のむこうを ゆびさした。
“Yes. We are in a world from 300 years ago.” Professor Pumpkin nodded and pointed across the pond.
そのゆびの かなたに、白い天守閣が、どうどうと そびえていた。
In the distance, a white castle keep stood proudly.
「あれは、キャベたま城の天守閣。そして、きみたちを ここへはこんできたのは、わしが発明した ふうせん型タイムマシン、すなわち、タイムふうせんじゃ」
“That is Kyabetama Castle. And it was my invention, the balloon-shaped time machine—Time Balloon—that brought you here.”
やがて、ざしきにあがった四人に、カボチャはかせが せつめいした。
Later, once they were seated in a tatami room, Professor Pumpkin explained further.
「でも、なんで わたしたちを こんなところに つれてきたんです」キャベたまたんていが、おこったように いった。
“But why did you bring us here?” Detective Kyabetama asked angrily.
ほかの みんなも、むっとしている。
The others were also upset.
「まあ、まあ。そうおこらないで。そのわけは、カボチャざえもんさまが 話してくれる」
“Now, now, don’t be angry. Lord Pumpkin-Zaemon will explain.”
カボチャはかせが そういうと、カボチャざえもんが、おほんと せきばらいして、話しはじめた。
Lord Pumpkin-Zaemon cleared his throat and began his tale.
それによるとー。キャベたま城の天守閣の いちばん上のかいには、むかしから魔物が すんでいて、のぼってくるものを 食いころしてしまうというので、だれも ちかづかない。
It turned out that the top floor of Kyabetama Castle had long been inhabited by a demon. No one dared approach, as it was said the demon would devour anyone who climbed up.
ところが、十日ほどまえ、キャベたま城の おひめさま、キャベたまひめが、天守閣に のぼったまま もどってこない。
But ten days ago, Princess Kyabetama-hime ascended to the top of the castle and never returned.
さては 魔物に つかまったかと、とのさまの キャベたまのかみが、ひめをすくいだせと けらいたちに めいじたが、こわがって、だれもいくものが いない。
Lord Kyabetama, fearing she had been captured by the demon, ordered his retainers to rescue her, but none dared go.
「そこへ、わしのしそんの カボチャはかせが、タイムふうせんとかで やってきて、話をきくと、キャベたまたんていなら、かならず ひめを たすけだすはずだと いって、ここへ よんでくれたと いうわけなのじゃよ」
“That’s when my descendant, Professor Pumpkin, arrived with his Time Balloon and, upon hearing the story, suggested that Detective Kyabetama could surely rescue the princess.”
「どうして わたしが、おひめさまを たすけなくっちゃならないんですか」キャベたまたんていが、カボチャはかせにきいた。
“Why must I be the one to save her?” Detective Kyabetama asked.
「キャベたまのかみは、きみの ご先祖さま。そして、キャベたまひめは、キャベたまのかみの ひとりむすめで、となりの国の わかとのと けっこんする話が すすんでおる」カボチャはかせは、いった。
“Because Lord Kyabetama is your ancestor. And Princess Kyabetama-hime is his only daughter, soon to marry the prince of the neighboring country. 「もし、キャベたまひめが 魔物に食いころされてしまったら、わかとのと けっこんできなくなり、したがって 子どもも うまれない。ということは、しそんが いなくなり、キャベたまくん、きみも この世から いなくなってしまうことになる。
If the princess is eaten, the marriage will be off, no children will be born, and your family line will vanish.
だからして、きみは、ぜったいに ひめを魔物の手から とりもどさなければならんのじゃ」
Therefore, you must rescue the princess!”
「うーん、まいったな。そんな おそろしい魔物になんか、かなうこないよ」キャベたまたんていは、頭をかかえた。
“Hmmm… this is a problem. How can I face such a terrifying demon?” Detective Kyabetama held his head in his hands.
「先生、ゆうきを だして！」トマトちゃんが、さけんだ。
“Be brave, Detective!” Tomato-chan cheered.
「ぼくたちも おうえんしますから」
“We’ll support you!”
「魔物を やっつけて、おひめさまを とりもどすんだ！」じゃがバタくんと ダイコンけいぶも、声をそろえて、はげました。
“Defeat the demon and rescue the princess!” Jagabata-kun and Inspector Daikon encouraged him in unison.
「わかった。なんとか やってみよう」三人に はげまされて、キャベたまたんていも けっしんした。
“All right, I’ll do my best.” Encouraged by his friends, Detective Kyabetama made up his mind.
「そうこなくてはな。では、お城に まいろう。とのさまが おまちかねじゃ」カボチャざえもんが、にやりと わらった。
“That’s the spirit! Let’s go to the castle—the lord awaits.” Lord Pumpkin-Zaemon smiled.
それから みんな そろって、お城にむかった。
Together, they headed for the castle.
お城の門番は、ダイコンけいぶに そっくり。
At the castle gate, the guard looked just like Inspector Daikon.
「ダイコンけいぶの ご先祖さまは、お城の門番みたい」トマトちゃんがわらうと、
“Looks like your ancestor was a gatekeeper,” Tomato-chan laughed.
「もうすこし、えらくなってくれないかなあ」ダイコンけいぶが ぼやいた。
“I wish he’d become someone more important,” grumbled Inspector Daikon.
お城のごてんの 広間で まっていると、刀をささげた おこしょうを したがえて、キャベたまのかみが はいってきた。
Inside the castle hall, they waited until Lord Kyabetama entered with his sword-bearing attendants.
「ぼくの ご先祖さまは、とのさまのおこしょうだ」じゃがバタくんが、ささやいた。
“My ancestor was an attendant!” whispered Jagabata-kun.
「あたしのご先祖さまは、おこしもとよ」あとから、おかしを もってきた こしもとを見て、トマトちゃんがいった。
“And mine was a court lady,” added Tomato-chan, seeing a woman bringing sweets.
「おほん。そなたが、わしのしそんの キャベたまたんていか。ひめを魔物から とりもどしてくれるというのじゃな」キャベたまのかみが 口をひらいた。
“Ah, you must be my descendant, Detective Kyabetama,” said Lord Kyabetama. “You will rescue my daughter from the demon, yes?”
「はい。ひめさまが まだ生きておられれば、かならず おたすけいたします」
“Yes. If the princess is alive, I will save her.”
「ひめは 生きておる」キャベたまのかみがいうと、カボチャざえもんが、はこの中から くしや かんざしや おうぎを とりだした。
“She is alive,” Lord Kyabetama confirmed. Professor Pumpkin then took a comb, hairpin, and fan from a box.
「それは、みんな、ひめが もっていたものじゃ。まいあさ、かみきれを むすびつけて、天守閣の てっぺんから なげおとされてきた」カボチャざえもんが、そのかみきれを ひろげてみせた。
“These belonged to the princess. Every morning, messages tied to these items are dropped from the top of the keep,” he explained, showing the paper strips.
それには、「たすけて！」とか、「はやく きて！」とか 「なにをしているの」とか かかれていた。
They read messages like “Help!”, “Come quickly!”, “What are you doing?”
キャベたまたんていは、大きなむしめがねを とりだして、くしや かんざしを しらべていたが、しらべをおえると、カボチャはかせの 耳になにやら ささやいた。
Detective Kyabetama examined the items with a magnifying glass, then whispered something to Professor Pumpkin.
「わかった。すぐに よういしよう」カボチャはかせが、そういって ごてんをでていくと、キャベたまたんていは、ゆでたまごを 食べはじめた。
“I see. I’ll prepare immediately,” Professor Pumpkin said and left. Detective Kyabetama calmly ate boiled eggs
十こめを 食べおえて、「ようし。これで ゆうき百ばいだ！」と、どんと むねを たたいたとき、カボチャはかせが もどってきた。
At finishing tenth egg, declared, “All right! I’m full of courage now!” Professor Pumpkin returned.
「これで なんとかなると おもうんじゃが」はかせは、おちゃの つつのようなものを キャベたまたんていに わたした。
He said "hope this works" and handed him a cylindrical object.
「ありがとうございます。では、おとのさま、おひめさまを たすけにいってまいります。さあ、いこう、みんな」
“Thank you. Lord Kyabetama, we’re off to rescue the princess. Let’s go, everyone!”
キャベたまたんていは、みんなを うながして、天守閣に むかった。
Led by Detective Kyabetama, they headed to the castle keep.
天守閣は、四かいだてだった。
The keep had four floors.
四人は、大きな とびらを あけて、まず 一かいに はいった。中は がらんどうで、まんなかに 上にのぼる かいだんがある。三つある小さなまどの あたりが あかるいだけで、あとは うすぐらい。
They entered the first floor, an empty space with a central staircase and dim lighting except near three small windows.
キャベたまたんていを せんとうに、四人は かいだんに むかった。
Led by Detective Kyabetama, they approached the stairs.
と、とつぜん、「ひえぇぇぇーっ」と、のどが やぶれるような ひめいが あがった。
Suddenly, a terrifying scream echoed.
見ると、てんじょうから、青白くひかる ほそいひものようなものが たれさがり、いちばん うしろにいた じゃがバタくんに、ぐるぐるまきついていた。
A thin, glowing blue string hung from the ceiling, wrapping around Jagabata-kun at the rear.
ひもが、ぐいと ひっぱられた。じゃがバタくんは、青白く ひかりながら、ちゅうに うき、そのまま ぐんぐん ひっぱられて、てんじょうを つきぬけて きえてしまった。
He was pulled upward and disappeared through the ceiling.
あっというまの できごとだった。
It happened very fast.
「二かいだ、いそげ！」
“It’s on the second floor—hurry!”
キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶと トマトちゃんは、だだだだだっと かいだんを かけあがった。
Detective Kyabetama, Inspector Daikon, and Tomato-chan rushed up.
二かいも、一かいと おなじように、まどがあって、がらんどうで、うすぐらい。
The second floor was similarly empty and dim.
けれど、いくら 見まわしても、じゃがバタくんの すがたは、かげもかたちもない。
But Jagabata-kun was nowhere to be seen.
「おかしいなあ」「どこへ きえたんだ？」
“Strange… where did he go?”
キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶが、顔を見あわせていると、「やだやだやだやだ、やめてえええええ」と、きんきん声の ひめいが あがった。
As they puzzled, a piercing scream rang out.
びっくりして ふりむくと、トマトちゃんが、まるでバレーを しているみたいに、りょう手を 上にあげ、つまさきだって ぐるぐる まわっている。
Tomato-chan was spinning like a ballerina, arms raised, encircled by a glowing blue ring.
青白い ひものようなものが、わのように トマトちゃんを とりまいている。トマトちゃんは、ぐるぐる まわりながら、ちゅうに ういていき、じゃがバタくんと おなじように そのまま てんじょうを つきぬけて きえてしまった。
She, too, floated upward and vanished through the ceiling.
キャベたまたんていと ダイコンけいぶは、ものもいわずに 三がいに かけあがった。
Without a word, Detective Kyabetama and Inspector Daikon raced to the third floor.
三がいも、一かいや 二かいと おなじだった。そして、トマトちゃんのすがたは、どこにもない。
It looked the same, and there was no sign of Tomato-chan.
「いったい、どうなっているんだ」
“What is going on?”
キャベたまたんていは、首をかしげながら、うしろを ふりかえった。そのとたん、その顔がひきつった。
Turning around, Detective Kyabetama’s face froze.
そこに いるはずの ダイコンけいぶが、けむりのように きえてしまって めがねだけが ころんと ころがっていたのだ。
Inspector Daikon had vanished like smoke, leaving only his glasses behind.
「おのれ、魔物め。ゆるさんぞ！」
“Damn you, demon! I won’t forgive this!”
キャベたまたんていは、ぎゅっと くちびるを かみしめると、いっぽ いっぽ しんちょうに、四かいへの かいだんを のぼっていった。
Grimly determined, Detective Kyabetama cautiously climbed to the fourth floor.
魔物は、そこにいるに ちがいなかった。
The demon had to be there.
「あれ？」ところが、四かいに あがったとたん、ひょうしぬけしてしまった。
But when he arrived, he was surprised.
そこは、これまでと ちがって、まどのかわりに 四方が あけはなさしになっていて、その外がわに、手すりのついた はばの せまい ろうかが ぐるりと とりまいている。
The fourth floor was open on all sides, with a narrow balcony and railing, overlooking the palace below.
そして、魔物どころか、じゃがバタくんも トマトちゃんも ダイコンけいぶも いない。もちろん、おひめさまも いない。
No demon, no friends, no princess.
外がわの ろうかを ぐるりと まわってみたが、べつにおかしなところは ない。目の下に、とのさまのいる ごてんの やねが 見えるだけだ。
Circling the balcony revealed nothing unusual.
「おひめさまや みんなが、ここにいないはずはない。きっと、魔物が 魔法かなんかで かくしているに ちがいないんだ」
“They must be here, hidden by magic.”
そうおもって、ふりむいてみると、中はいつのまにか たたみが しかれた 大広間に かわっていた。
Turning back, the room had transformed into a large tatami hall.
「おもったとおりだ。魔物め、でてこい。おひめさまや みんなを どこに かくした！」
“I knew it. Demon, show yourself! Where are they?”
キャベたまたんていが さけぶと、しょうめんの ふすまが、するすると ひらいた。
As he shouted, the front sliding doors slowly opened.
ふすまの むこうに、ゆかから てんじょうまで とどく大きなくものすが はってあった。
Beyond them was a giant spider web glowing blue.
青白く ひかる くもの糸に からまれて、じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんと ダイコンけいぶが、くるしそうに もがいている。
Caught in the web were Jagabata-kun, Tomato-chan, and Inspector Daikon, struggling in pain.
すの まんなかには、大きなくもが いた。からだは くもだが、顔は人間だ。
At the center of the web sat a giant spider—with the face of a human.
「ふふふふ。まっていたぞ。おまえも、わらわの えさになれ！」
"Heh heh heh... I've been waiting for you. You too shall become my meal!"
ばけものぐもは、赤い口を あけて シャーッと 青白い糸を いくすじも はきだした。
The monster spider opened its red mouth wide and hissed as it shot out several strands of pale blue threads.
糸は あみのように ひろがって、キャベたまたんていに おそいかかった。
The threads spread out like a net and came swooping down toward Detective Cabbage.
「えさになって たまるか！」キャベたまたんていは、頭のはっぱを 一まい ちぎって、なげつけた。
"I won’t become your meal so easily!" shouted Detective Cabbage. He tore off one leaf from his head and threw it at the spider.
くもの糸がはっぱに まきついたかとおもうと、びゅーんと ちぢまって、はっぱは、じゃがバタくんの となりに はりついた。
As soon as the web strands wrapped around the leaf, they retracted with a whoosh, and the leaf was stuck next to Potato Butter-kun.
「ふふ。なかなか やるな」
"Heh, not bad at all."
ばけものぐもは、にやりと わらうと、また口から糸を はきだした。
The monster spider sneered and once again spat out a thread from its mouth.
こんどは 一本で、ひゅるひゅるひゅるっと とんできて、キャベたまたんていの からだに ぐるぐると まきついた。
This time, a single strand flew straight and spiraled around Detective Cabbage's body.
よけるひまも なかった。
He didn’t have time to dodge.
「おっほっほっ。おまえは なかなかうまそうじゃ。おまえか らさきに食ってやろう」
"Ho ho ho! You look rather tasty. I think I’ll eat you first."
ばけものぐもは、足に糸を からませて、ぐいぐいひっぱった。
The monster spider wrapped the thread around its leg and began pulling him forcefully.
「くくくくくっ」
"Heh heh heh!"
キャベたまたんていは、りょう足を ふんばって こらえたが、それでも ずるずると くものすのほうに ひきずられていく。
Detective Cabbage braced himself with both feet, but was still being dragged slowly toward the spider’s web.
とうとう、くものすまで あと三メートルぐらいのところまで ひきよせられてしまった。
Eventually, he was pulled to within about three meters of the web.
「いひひひひ。うまそうじゃの」ばけものぐもが、口を大きく あけて、よだれを たらした。
"Hee hee hee! You’ll make a delicious meal," the spider said, opening its mouth wide, drooling.
そのとたん、「これでも くらえ！」
At that moment—"Take this!"
キャベたまたんていが 手にもっていた おちゃの つつのようなものから、シューッと きりみたいなものが いきおいよく ふきだしてきて、ばけものぐもに ふりかかった。
From a container shaped like a tea canister that Detective Cabbage was holding, a mist-like spray burst out and covered the monster spider.
「わっ、わっ、わっ、わわわわあ.....！」
"Wah, wah, wah, w-waaaah...!"
ばけものぐもは、ひめいを あげて すから ころげおちた。
The spider let out a screech and fell from its web.
くものすも、ずたずたに やぶれて、じゃがバタくんたちも、くもといっしょに ころげおちた。
The web was torn to shreds, and Potato Butter-kun and the others tumbled down with the spider.
「魔物よ。おまえが くもの ばけものだということは とっくに しっていたんだ」キャベたまたんていが いった。
"Monster! I already knew you were a spider demon," said Detective Cabbage.
「おひめさまの くしや かんざしに、くもの糸の きれっぱしが からまっていたんで、わかったのだ。それで、カボチャはかせに たのんで、タイムふうせんで くもよけの スプレーを かってきてもらったのさ。さあ、おひめさまを どこへ やった。はくじょうしないと くもよけスプレーを たっぷり おみまいしてやるぞ！」
"I saw bits of spider silk caught in the princess's comb and hairpin. That’s how I figured it out. So I asked Professor Pumpkin to prepare a thyme balloon and bought some spider-repellent spray. Now, where is the princess? If you don’t tell me, I’ll give you a full dose of this spray!"
キャベたまたんていは、くるしそうに うめいている ばけものぐもに むかって、ぐいっと スプレーかんを つきだした。
Detective Cabbage pointed the spray can toward the groaning monster spider.
「おまちなさい」そのとき、右手の ふすまが ひらいて、かわいらしい むすめが でてきた。
"Wait!" Just then, the sliding door to the right opened, and a lovely young girl appeared.
「わたしはキャベたま城の キャベたまひめです。これは、わたしの ともだちの くもでひめです。これいじょう くるしめてはなりません」
"I am Princess Cabbage. This is my friend, Spider Princess. Please, don’t harm her anymore."
むすめは、ばけものぐもを かばうように、キャベたまたんていのまえに 立ちふさがった。
The girl stood protectively in front of Detective Cabbage to shield the spider.
「魔物が あなたさまの ともだち？ いったい どういうことです」キャベたまたんていは、わけが わからなくなって、ぽかーんと してしまった。
"The monster is your friend? What is the meaning of this?" Detective Cabbage was completely confused.
「こんどのことは、みんな、わたしと くもでひめが そうだんして やったことです」キャベたまひめは、そういって、話しはじめた。
"This whole situation was something Spider Princess and I planned together," Princess Cabbage began to explain.
この話によると、キャベたまひめは、キャベたまのすけという わかい さむらいと、こいびとどうしだった。
According to her story, Princess Cabbage was in love with a young samurai named Cabbage-nosuke.
けれど、みぶんが ちがうので、とのさまが けっこんを ゆるさない。
But due to their difference in social status, the lord would not approve of their marriage.
なやんでいるうちに、となりの国の わかとのとの けっこんの話が すすんでしまった。
While she was troubled about this, a marriage proposal came from a young lord of a neighboring country.
こまった キャベたまひめは、天守閣にすむ くもでひめに そうだんした。子どものころから 虫やくもが すきだった キャベたまひめは、あるとき、天守閣に ひとりで のぼって、くもでひめに であい、ともだちに なっていたのだ。
In distress, Princess Cabbage consulted her friend Spider Princess, whom she had befriended long ago after climbing alone to the castle tower, where she met her.
ふたりは 計画を 立てた。
They devised a plan.
キャベたまひめが くもでひめに さらわれたことにし、キャベたまのすけが 天守閣にのぼって ひめをたすけ、そのごほうびに、ひめとのけっこんを ゆるしてもらう、というものだった。
Princess Cabbage would pretend to be kidnapped by Spider Princess, and Cabbage-nosuke would heroically rescue her. As a reward, they hoped to gain the lord’s permission for their marriage.
ところがー。
But...
「わたしが 天守閣に きて もう 十日も たつのに、キャベたまのすけは、たすけに きてくれない。きっと、わたしのことなんか、わすれてしまったんだわ」キャベたまひめは、しくしく なきだした。
"It’s already been ten days since I came to the castle tower, and Cabbage-nosuke hasn’t come to rescue me. He must have forgotten about me," Princess Cabbage said, starting to cry.
「そんなことありません。これには、ふかいわけがあるに ちがいありませんよ」元気を とりもどした くもでひめが、キャベたまひめを なぐさめた。
"That can’t be true. I’m sure there’s a good reason," Spider Princess comforted her.
「かわいそう。先生、なんとかしてあげて」トマトちゃんが、キャベたまたんていを ふりかえった。
"Poor thing. Detective, please do something," said Tomato-chan, looking back at Detective Cabbage.
「先生なら、できるはずです」じゃがバタくんが、うなずく。
"You can do it, I’m sure," nodded Potato Butter-kun.
「キャベたまひめが わかとのと けっこんしないなら、キャベたまのすけと ひめを けっこんさせないと、きみは この世にいないことになるんだぜ」ダイコンけいぶが、せなかを つつく。
"If Princess Cabbage doesn’t marry the young lord, and if she and Cabbage-nosuke aren’t married instead, you might disappear from this world," Chief Daikon reminded him.
「わかってる。わたしに まかせてくれたまえ」キャベたまたんていが、じしんたっぷりに、ぽんと むねをたたいた。
"I understand. Leave it to me," Detective Cabbage said confidently, thumping his chest.
さて、こちらは、とのさまの すむ ごてん。
Meanwhile, in the lord’s palace—
キャベたまたんていたちが 天守閣に のぼってから ずいぶん時間が たつのに いっこうに もどってこないので、「さては、魔物に 食われたか」「ひょっとしたら、ひょっとするかも.....」と、しんぱいになった カボチャざえもんと カボチャはかせは、ごてんを でて、天守閣の下まで いってみた。
A long time had passed since Detective Cabbage and his team climbed to the castle tower, and they hadn’t returned. "They must have been eaten by the monster," feared Pumpkin Zaemon. "They might really be in trouble," worried Professor Pumpkin. The two hurried to the base of the tower.
すると、天守閣の てっぺんから、なにかが するするとおりてきた。
Suddenly, something began sliding down from the top of the tower.
よく見ると、なんと それは、青白い ひものようなものに りょう足を しばられ、さかささまに つるされた キャベたまたんていだった。
Looking closer, they saw it was Detective Cabbage, tied by both legs with pale blue threads and hanging upside down.
ー魔物に つかまってしまいましたあ！キャベたまたんていは、大声でさけんだ。
"I’ve been captured by the monster!" shouted Detective Cabbage.
ー魔物は、キャベたまのすけの きもが 食べたいといってまああす。キャベたまのすけと こうかんなら、ひめさまを かえすと いってまああす。
"The monster says it wants to eat Cabbage-nosuke’s liver. If you trade him, it will return the princess!"
「キャベたまのすけはああ、となりの国に つかいにいっておるわあああい！」カボチャざえもんが、さけびかえした。
"Cabbage-nosuke is away on an errand in the neighboring country!" Pumpkin Zaemon shouted back.
ーだったらあ、すぐに よびもどしてくださああい。でないと、ひめさまも わたしたちも、食べられてしまいまあああす。
"Then bring him back immediately! Otherwise, both the princess and we will be eaten!"
「これは たいへんじゃ」
"This is terrible."
「ぐずぐずしてられませんぞ」
"We must act quickly!"
カボチャざえもんと カボチャはかせは、顔を見あわせると、あたふたと ごてんに かけこんでいった。
Pumpkin Zaemon and Professor Pumpkin looked at each other and rushed back to the palace.
「オーケー、あげてくれたまえ」キャベたまたんていがいうと、ひもが するすると ひきあげられていった。
"Okay, pull me up," said Detective Cabbage. The thread began lifting him back up.
「ふう。うまくいったけど、頭に 血が さがってきて ふらふらだ」大広間に もどった キャベたまたんていは、顔をまっかにして、ぼやいた。
"Phew, it worked, but the blood rushed to my head—I feel dizzy," he grumbled, returning to the great hall, face flushed.
それから しばらくすると、とんとんとんと かいだんを あがってくる音がして、わかい さむらいが すがたを あらわした。
Soon after, they heard footsteps climbing the stairs, and a young samurai appeared.
「キャベたまのすけ！」キャベたまひめが かけよった。
"Cabbage-nosuke!" cried Princess Cabbage, running to him.
「ひめさま！」
"Princess!"
ふたりはしっかりとだきあった。
They embraced tightly.
「よかった、よかった」キャベたまたんていたちも、大よろこび。
"Wonderful, wonderful!" Detective Cabbage and the others were overjoyed.
キャベたまのすけの 話によると、うちあわせどおり、「おひめさまを たすけだします」と、とのさまに もうしてようと おもってたやさき、きゅうに となりの国へ つかいにいくように、めいじられてしまったのだという。
According to Cabbage-nosuke, just as he was about to report to the lord that he would rescue the princess, he was suddenly ordered to go on an urgent mission to the neighboring country.
「すぐに もどるつもりでいたのですが、ようじが なかなか はかどらなくて、ひにちが たってしまい、ようやく さきほど お城に かえりついたところ、とのさまより、天守閣にのぼれと めいじられたのでございます」
"I intended to return immediately, but the tasks took longer than expected. I only just returned and was then ordered by the lord to climb the tower."
「そうだったの。わたしのことを、わすれたわけでは なかったのね」
"So you hadn’t forgotten about me."
「とんでもない。なんで、ひめさまのことを わすれましょうか」
"Of course not! How could I ever forget you?"
ふたりは、手をとりあい、じっと みつめあった。
They held hands and gazed into each other’s eyes.
それからみんなは、くもでひめに さよならを いって、天守閣をおりた。
Then everyone bid farewell to Spider Princess and descended the tower.
そして、そろって ごてんに はいった。
Together, they entered the palace.
キャベたまのかみも、カボチャざえもんも、カボチャはかせも、みんなのぶじな すがたを 見て、びっくりするやら 大よろこびするやら、それは それは 大さわぎ。
The lord, Pumpkin Zaemon, and Professor Pumpkin were astonished and overjoyed to see everyone safe.
「おほん。さて みなさん」さわぎが しずまるのを まって、キャベたまたんていが、口をひらいた。
"Ahem. Now then, everyone," said Detective Cabbage after the commotion had settled.
「魔物は、キャベたまのすけが 気にいったので、きもはとらないでおく、そのかわり、ひめと けっこんさせるようにと いいました。そうすれば、この城の しゅごしんとして、人びとを まもってやろうと いっています。けれど、いうとおりにしないのなら、この城に すむものたちを たたって、とりころすそうです」
"The monster has taken a liking to Cabbage-nosuke and promised not to take his liver. In exchange, it asked that he be allowed to marry the princess. If we agree, the monster will serve as a guardian spirit for the castle. But if we refuse, it will bring disaster upon us."
もちろん これは、キャベたまたんていが かんがえだしたことだ。そういえば、とのさまが、キャベたまひめと キャベたまのすけを けっこんさせるだろうと、おもったのだ。
Of course, this was something Detective Cabbage had made up on the spot, expecting that the lord would approve the marriage.
「わかった、わかった。わかとのとの 話は やめじゃ。ひめは キャベたまのすけと けっこんさせる。だから、わしらに たたるのは やめてくれと、魔物に いってくれ」とのさまは、あわてて いった。
"Understood! We’ll cancel the proposal from the neighboring lord. The princess will marry Cabbage-nosuke. Please tell the monster not to curse us," the lord said hastily.
（やれやれ、これで わたしも この世から きえないで すんだ）キャベたまたんていは、ほっとして、ひたいの あせを ぬぐった。
(Phew... now I won’t disappear from this world, thought Detective Cabbage, wiping the sweat from his brow.)
キャベたまたんていたちは、それから しばらくして、タイムふうせんで じむしょに もどった。
Later, Detective Cabbage and his team returned to their office via the thyme balloon.
「しまった。ぼうしを わすれてきた！」ふうせんから でたとたん、キャベたまたんていが さけんだ。
"Oh no! I forgot my hat!" Detective Cabbage exclaimed as soon as he stepped out of the balloon.
「はかせ、すぐに もどってください」
"Professor, please go back and get it!"
「あいにくじゃが、なんかいも いったりきたりしたんで、ふうせんが なくなってしまった。あたらしく つくるには、あと 半年は かかるじゃろうて」カボチャはかせが、気のどくそうに いった。
"Unfortunately, after so many trips, the balloon has run out. It’ll take six months to make a new one," said Professor Pumpkin sympathetically.
「キャベたまのかみが、気にいって、かぶっているかもしれないな」ダイコンけいぶが いった。
"Maybe the lord liked it and is wearing it now," Chief Daikon joked.
みんな、そのかっこうを おもいうかべて、大わらい。
Everyone burst out laughing, picturing the scene.
キャベたまたんていだけが、しょんぼり。
Only Detective Cabbage looked dejected.
「とほほほ。あの ぼうし、高かったんだ.....」
"Oh dear... that hat was expensive..."
