むかし むかし、ある むらに、 たいそう なまけものの おとこが すんでいました。
はたらくのが だいきらいで、じぶんの はたけは くさ ぼうぼうの あれほうだい。
いえは かたむき、かべが くずれても、あまもりが しても おかまいなし。
まいにち ぶらぶら あそんでいました。
ちょうど そのころ、むらでは ふしぎな ことが おこっていました。
よるに なって つきが でても、この むらには なぜか つきの ひかりが あたらないのです。
「きっと むこうの やまに ばけものが いて、おつきさまを かくしているに ちがいない」
「そのうち この むらも ばけものに おそわれるかも しれない」
そんな うわさが ひろまり、むらの ひとたちは こわがって いました。
そんな あるひ、なまけものは なにか おもしろいことは ないかと、むこうの やままで いって みました。
すると、おおきな きの したに きのこが いっぽん はえていました。
「なにも することが ないし、ここで ひとねむりするか」
ひが しずみ、つきが のぼりはじめると、きのこは むくっ むくむくっと おおきくなり、あっというまに、きよりも おおきく そだちました。
めを さました なまけものは びっくり。
「な、なんだ、この きのこは」
すると、あっというまに おなじような きのこが あっちでも こっちでも ぐんぐん おおきく なりました。
みるみる うちに きのこの はやしが でき、つきの ひかりを さえぎって しまいました。
「なんじゃ、この きのこの ばけものたちは......。そうか。こいつたちが おつきさまを かくしておったのか」
なまけものが あきれて きのこを みあげていると、さいしょの きのこが いいました。
「おまえは だれじゃ。こんな ところで なにしてるんだ？」
「おらは むこうの むらの もんだが、はたらくのが きらいで、あそんでばかり。はたけは くさが のびほうだい。いえは こわれほうだい....。あそぶのにも あきたので、きょうは ここで ねておった」
と なまけものが いうと、
「ほほう、おもしろい やつだなあ」
きのこの ばけものは なまけものが すっかり きにいりました。
「それじゃあ、おまえの いちばん すきなのは あそぶことか？」
きのこの ばけものが ききました。
「そうだ。あそぶのと ねるのが だいすき」
「では、いちばん こわいのは なんだ？」
「おかね。おばけは こわくないけど、おかねを みると こわくって、こわくって。それで、おまえは なにが すきで、なにが こわい？」
こんどは なまけものが たずねました。
すると、きのこが、こたえました。
「おれたちは きのこだから、だいすきなのは やっぱり きの はっぱ。あかや ちゃいろの ふかふかの おちばが だいすきさ。こわいのは こめの とぎじるだ。あの しろい しるを おもいだすだけで.... おお、ぶるぶる....」
なまけものは いいことを きいたぞと よろこんで、
「ちょっと まっておれ。おちばを たくさん もってきてやろう」
そう いうなり、いえに もどると、こめの とぎじるを おけ いっぱいに いれて、やまへ もどって きました。
なまけものは にやりと わらうと、
「さあ、よろこべ よろこべ。おまえたちが だいすきな ものを たっぷりと もってきて やったぞ。それー」
そう いうなり、こめの とぎじるを きのこの ばけものに かけて まわりました。
おどろいたのは きのこたち。
「うわー！」
こめの とぎじるを かけられた きのこたちは みんな ちいさくなり、とうとう とけて しまいました。
すると、
「お、おつきさまの ひかりが さしてきた」
「おつきさまを みるのは ひさしぶりじゃのう」
「どうしたんじゃろ？」
むらでは みんなが よろこぶやら ふしぎがるやら。なまけものは そしらぬ かおで むらに かえると、かたむいた いえの なかで つきを みていました。
すると、よるおそく かべの われめや やねの あなから なまけものの いえの なかに ジャララン ジャラランと、おかねが なげこまれました。
「よくも おれたちの なかまを だましたな。おまえの だいきらいな おかねに うもれて くるしむのだ」
という きのこの こえが きこえましたが.....
「ふふふ、うまく いった」
なまけものは おおよろこび。
いちやの うちに おおがねもちに なりましたとさ。
### The Mushroom Monsters (きのこのばけもの KINOKO NO BAKEMONO)
Once upon a time, in a certain village, there lived a very lazy man.
He hated working so much that his own fields were overgrown with weeds and completely neglected.
His house was leaning, the walls were crumbling, and he didn't care even when the roof leaked.
Every day, he spent his time lazing around and playing.
Around that time, strange things were happening in the village.
Even when the moon rose at night, for some reason, its light did not reach this village.
"There must be a monster in the mountain over there hiding the moon," people said.
"Perhaps the village will be attacked by the monster someday."
Such rumors spread, and the villagers were terrified.
One day, the lazy man, looking for something fun to do, went up to the mountain.
There, under a large tree, he found a mushroom growing.
"I have nothing to do, so I'll take a nap here," he thought.
As the sun set and the moon began to rise, the mushroom started to grow bigger and bigger until it was taller than the tree.
When the lazy man woke up, he was astonished.
"What is this mushroom?"
Suddenly, mushrooms just like it started growing here and there, getting bigger and bigger.
Soon, a forest of mushrooms formed, blocking out the moonlight.
"What are these mushroom monsters? So they were the ones hiding the moon," the lazy man realized.
As he stared in amazement at the mushrooms, the first mushroom spoke.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"I'm from the village over there. I hate working and spend all my time playing. My fields are overgrown with weeds, and my house is falling apart. I got tired of playing today, so I came here to sleep," the lazy man replied.
"Well, you're an interesting guy," said the mushroom monster, taking a liking to him.
"So, what's your favorite thing to do?" asked the mushroom monster.
"I love playing and sleeping."
"And what's the scariest thing for you?"
"Money. I'm not afraid of ghosts, but seeing money terrifies me. What about you? What do you like, and what scares you?"
The lazy man asked.
The mushroom answered.
"We're mushrooms, so we love tree leaves, especially the soft, red, and brown fallen leaves. What scares us is rice water. Just thinking about that white liquid...oh, it makes me shiver."
The lazy man was delighted to learn this.
"Wait here, I'll bring you lots of fallen leaves."
He returned home, filled a bucket with rice water, and went back to the mountain.
The lazy man grinned.
"Rejoice! Rejoice! I brought you plenty of what you love. Here it is!"
Saying this, he poured the rice water over the mushroom monsters.
The mushrooms were shocked.
"Whoa!"
The mushrooms, doused in rice water, shrank and eventually melted away.
Then,
"Oh, the moonlight is shining."
"It's been a long time since we've seen the moon."
"What happened?"
The villagers were both happy and puzzled. The lazy man returned to the village as if nothing had happened and watched the moon from his leaning house.
Late that night, coins began to pour through the cracks in the walls and holes in the roof into the lazy man's house.
"How dare you deceive our comrades. Now you'll suffer, buried under your most hated money."
The mushrooms' voices could be heard, but...
"Hehe, it worked out perfectly."
The lazy man was overjoyed.
And so, he became very wealthy overnight.
