(The Elves and the Shoemaker)
むかし、たいそう びんぼうな くつやが いました。
Once upon a time, there was a very poor shoemaker.
ざいりょうの くつの かわを 買う お金も ないくらい こまって いました。
He was so troubled that he didn’t even have enough money to buy leather for shoes.
ある日、とうとう 一足分の かわしか なくなって しまいました。
One day, he was left with just enough leather for one last pair of shoes.
でも、くつは 「とうとう これで おしまいか。さいごに、りっぱな くつを 作って みよう。かみさま、どうか わたしを おたすけください。」と 言って、ベッドに 入りました。
Thinking this was the end, he said, “This is finally it. But before it’s over, let me make one last splendid pair of shoes. God, please help me,” and he went to bed.
朝に なりました。「さあて、しごとに かかろうか。」と、しごとばに 来ると、なんと、くつが きちんと できあがって いるでは ありませんか。
When morning came, the shoemaker went to his workshop and said, “Well, time to get to work,” but to his surprise, the shoes were perfectly finished!
「や、や。これは いったい どうした ことか。」くつやは、首を ひねって しまいました。
“Well, well, what on earth is this?” he said, scratching his head in confusion.
そこへ、おきゃくさんが 来ました。
Just then, a customer arrived.
「おお、なんて すばらしい くつなんだ。ぜひ ゆずって ください。」
“Oh, what magnificent shoes! Please let me buy them.”
たいへん 気にいって、よけい お金を はらって くれました。
The customer was so pleased with the shoes that he paid even more money than they were worth.
くつやは、その お金で、二足分の かわを 買うことが できました。
With that money, the shoemaker was able to buy enough leather for two pairs of shoes.
くつやは、夕方、二足分の くつの かわを たって、「あした、これを しあげよう。」と 言って 休みました。
That evening, the shoemaker prepared the leather for two pairs of shoes and said, “I’ll finish these tomorrow,” before going to rest.
ところが 朝になると、もう、二足の くつが、みごとに できあがって いるのです。
But when morning came, the two pairs of shoes were already expertly made.
すぐに、おきゃくが 来て、「これは いい くつだ。」と、また、たくさん お金を くれるのでした。
Soon after, more customers arrived, delighted with the shoes, and paid generously.
くつやは、四足分の かわを 買う ことが できました。
The shoemaker was then able to buy leather for four pairs of shoes.
そして、朝に なると、くつが できあがって いるのです。こうして、くつが どんどん ふえて、どんどん 売れる ように なりました。くつやは、お金もちに なりました。
And so it continued. Every morning, the shoes were beautifully finished, and the shoemaker sold more and more, becoming quite wealthy.
さて、あるばん、くつやは、いそがしく くつの かわを たちながら、おかみさんに 言いました。
One evening, as he was cutting leather, the shoemaker spoke to his wife.
「いったい だれが くつを こしらえるのか、こんばんは、ねむらずに 見ていようか。」
“Who could be making these shoes? Let’s stay up tonight and see.”
「そうですね。わたしたちを しあわせに してくれたのは だれか、見たい ものだわ。」
“Yes,” she replied, “I’d love to see who has brought us such happiness.”
二人は、しごとばの 明かりを、つけた ままに して おきました。二人は、しごとばの ものかげに、そっと かくれて、見ていました。
The two left the workshop light on and hid in a corner to watch.
するとー。ま夜中、二人の はだかの こびとが あらわれました。
And at midnight— Two tiny, naked elves appeared.
こびとたちは、ちょんと しごとだいに のぼりました。こびとたちは、くつの かわを とりあげて、しごとに かかりました。
The elves hopped onto the workbench and began sewing.
が、その 手つきの みごとなこと。小さな 手で、かわを ぬい、大きな 木づちを ふりあげて、とんとん とんとん.....。みるまに くつを 作りあげて しまうのです。
Their little hands expertly stitched the leather and hammered with big mallets, going “tap-tap, tap-tap,” until, in no time, they had completed the shoes.
くつやは、びっくりして、なにも 言うことが できませんでした。
The shoemaker and his wife were astonished and couldn’t say a word.
ある朝、おかみさんが 言いました。「わたしたちを しあわせに してくれたのは、こびとたちだったのね。」
The next morning, the wife said, “It was the elves who brought us such joy.”
「なにか おれいを しなければ いけないな。」
“We must give them something in return,” the shoemaker said.
「こびとたちは、はだか でしたね。わたし、あたたかい ふくを 作って あげようかしら。」
“They didn’t have any clothes,” she noted. “I’ll make them warm clothing.”
「うん、わしは、小さな くつを 作って あげよう。」
“Yes, and I’ll make them little shoes,” the shoemaker agreed.
二人は、さっそく しごとに とりかかりました。夕方、ようふくや くつが できあがりました。
They got to work right away and by evening, the clothes and shoes were finished.
それを、くつの かわの かわりに、しごとだいの 上に のせて おきました。そして、また、そっと かくれて 見ていました。
They left the clothes and shoes on the workbench instead of leather and hid once more to see what would happen.
ま夜中に なりました。こびとたちが やって きました。
At midnight, the elves arrived.
「さあ、しごとに かかるか。」言いながら、だいの 上を 見て びっくり！
“Let’s get to work!” they exclaimed, but when they saw the clothes and shoes, they were astonished.
「これ、おいらに ぴったりだ。」すごい はやさで ふくを きて、くつを はきました。こびとたちは、とうとう 歌いだしました。
“These are just perfect for us!” they cried. They quickly dressed and put on the shoes, then burst into song:
「見てくれ おいらの かっこうを すてきで りっぱな わかものだ
“Look at us, so fine and dandy,
これじゃ くつやは やれないよ」
No more shoemaking, our work is done!”
そして、はねたり おどったり、いすを とびこし、たなに のぼり、さんざ はしゃぎ まわりました。
They danced, jumped, leapt over chairs, climbed shelves, and frolicked joyously around the workshop.
それから、おどりながら、ドアから 出て いきました。その ときから、もう、こびとたちは 来なく なりました。
Then, still dancing, they left through the door and never returned.
けれども、くつやは それからも、いっしょうけんめい はたらきました。くつは、あいかわらず よく 売れたし、お金にも こまりません。
But from that day forward, the shoemaker continued working hard, and his shoes sold well, and he never had any financial worries again.
くつやと おかみさんは、ずっと ずっと、しあわせに くらしたと いうことです。
The shoemaker and his wife lived happily ever after.
