第1章 おかしを やく日 OKASHIWO YAKUHI
Chapter 1: The Cookie-Baking Day
「かあさん。きょう ぼく おそとにでたい。そして、うんと ふかいあなを ほりたい」こぶたの オリバーくんが いいました。
"Mom, I want to go outside today and dig a really deep hole," said Oliver the little pig.
「そして、かあさんに すなのケーキ つくってあげたい」
"And I want to make a sand cake for you!"
「きょうは、そとは だめよ」と かあさん。
"It's not a good day to go outside," said Mom.
「さむいし 雨が ふってるじゃない」
"It's cold, and it's raining."
「じゃ、どうしたらいい？」と こぶたくん。
"Then what should I do?" asked Oliver.
「だいどころへ いらっしゃいな」かあさんは いいました。
"Come to the kitchen," said Mom.
おおきくて きいろい おりょうりの ボウルが、だいどころの テーブルに のっています。
A big yellow mixing bowl was sitting on the kitchen table.
「きょうは おかしを やく日だから」かあさんが いいました。
"Today is a baking day," said Mom.
「ねえ、どんなおかし？」
"What kind of treats?"
「オートメールのクッキーなの」と かあさん。
"Oatmeal cookies," said Mom.
「ほしぶどうも いれる？」と こぶたくん。
"Will we put raisins in them?" asked Oliver.
「どっさりね」かあさんは いいました。
"A whole bunch," said Mom.
かあさんは、おりょうりどうぐを しょっきだなから おろしました。
Mom took out some cooking utensils from the cupboard.
「クッキーには なにを いれるの？」こぶたくんは たずねました。
"What do we put in the cookies?" asked Oliver.
「まず バター」と かあさん。
"First, butter," said Mom.
「それから おさとう」
"Then, sugar."
「ぼく まぜていい？」と こぶたくん。
"Can I mix it?" asked Oliver.
「いいわよ」と かあさん。
"Of course," said Mom.
こぶたくんは かきまぜはじめます。
Oliver began stirring.
「あたしは？」いもうとの アマンダが いいました。
"What about me?" asked his little sister Amanda.
それで ボウルと おおさじを もらい、アマンダも かきまぜはじめました。
So, Mom gave Amanda a bowl and a big spoon, and she started stirring too.
「ここで たまごを ひとつ」と かあさん。
"Now, we add one egg," said Mom.
こぶたくんは たまごを かきまぜました。すると、たまごの きいろいところが きえていきました。
Oliver mixed in the egg. The yellow yolk disappeared as he stirred.
「それに オートミール。もちろんよ」と かあさん。
"Next, oatmeal, of course," said Mom.
こぶたくんは みんな まぜました。
Oliver mixed everything together.
「それから こむぎこ 一カップ、それに ふくらしこ しょうしょう」と かあさん。
"Then, one cup of flour and a little baking powder," said Mom.
こぶたくんは いっしょうけんめい かきまぜました。こむぎこは テーブルに こぼれて、こぶたくん まっしろ。
Oliver stirred with all his might. Flour spilled onto the table, turning him completely white.
「これは おおしごとだ」と こぶたくん。
"This is a big job," said Oliver.
「そうよ」と かあさん。
"It sure is," said Mom.
「でも こぶたくん なかなか じょうず」
"But you're doing a great job, Oliver."
アマンダは こなを ぱたぱた やっているうちに、まっしろのけ。
As Amanda patted the flour around, she also turned completely white.
「ここで スパイス」と かあさん。
"Now for the spices," said Mom.
こぶたくんは、ナツメグを さらっと ひとまき。
Oliver sprinkled a little nutmeg.
クローブを ひとまき。
A little clove.
シナモンを ふたまき。
And two sprinkles of cinnamon.
「もうひとつ いれるものが あるわ」かあさんは いいました。
"There's one more thing to add," said Mom.
「それは なんでしょ？」
"What is it?"
「ほしぶどう？」と こぶたくん。
"Raisins?" guessed Oliver.
「そう、ほしぶどう」と かあさん。
"That's right, raisins," said Mom.
かあさんは、テーブルに ほしぶどうを ふたやま つくりました。
Mom made two piles of raisins on the table.
「これは クッキーに いれるぶん」かあさんは いいました。
"This is for the cookies," said Mom.
「こっちは おてつだいを してくれたひとのぶん」
"And this is for the helpers."
「あたしは？」と アマンダ。
"What about me?" asked Amanda.
かあさんは、アマンダにも ほしぶどうの やまを ふたつ つくってやりました。
Mom made two piles for Amanda too.
アマンダは どっちも たべてしまいました。
Amanda ate both piles.
「これで クッキーの きじが できたわ」かあさんは いいました。
"Now the cookie dough is ready," said Mom.
こぶたくんは クッキーの きじを ちぎって、たくさんの ちいさな かたまりに まるめました。
Oliver tore off pieces of the dough and rolled them into small balls.
かあさんは、それを オーブンざらに のせました。
Mom placed them on a baking tray.
「これから どうする？」と こぶたくん。
"What happens next?" asked Oliver.
「これから やくの」と かあさん。
"Now, we bake them," said Mom.
かあさんは、クッキーを のせたさらを オーブンに さしいれました。
She put the tray of cookies into the oven.
「こぶたくんは、クッキーが やけているあいだ なにを していたい？」かあさんが たずねました。
"What do you want to do while the cookies are baking?" Mom asked.
「なにもしないで いようと」と こぶたくん。
"I don't want to do anything," said Oliver.
「できたてが たべられるまで まってようよ」
"I just want to wait until we can eat them fresh from the oven."
こぶたくんと かあさんと アマンダは、だいどころの テーブルに すわっていました。
Oliver, Mom, and Amanda sat at the kitchen table.
そして、雨のおとを きいていました。
They listened to the sound of the rain.
クッキーの やける おいしいかおりが、ぷーんと ただよってきました。
The delicious smell of baking cookies filled the air.
「ぼく、いま しあわせ」と こぶたくん。
"I'm happy right now," said Oliver.
「あら、どうして？」と かあさん。
"Oh? Why is that?" asked Mom.
「かあさんが そばに いてくれるんだもの。アマンダもいるし、それに ぼく さむくないし、雨にぬれてもいない。あたたかい。やけている クッキーも あたたかい」
"Because you're here with me. Amanda is too. I'm not cold. I'm not getting wet in the rain. I'm warm. And the cookies baking in the oven are warm too."
すると かあさんも いいました。
Mom smiled and said,
「ほんと。そのとおり。だからね、かあさんも クッキーを やく日が すきなの」
"You're right. That’s why I love baking days."

第2章 いもうと IMOUTO
Chapter 2：Little Sister
「アマンダは、どこにも さわっちゃ だめ」こぶたの オリバーくんは、いもうとの アマンダに いいました。
“Don’t touch anything, Amanda!” said Oliver the little pig to his younger sister, Amanda.
「ぼくは、どうろを つくっているんだからね」
“I’m building a road.”
どうろは ソファに いっぱいです。はしや トンネルや ガソリンスタンド、ちゅうしゃじょうも。そこへ くるまや トラックを のせました。
The road covered the entire sofa. There were bridges, tunnels, a gas station, and even a parking lot. He carefully placed cars and trucks along the road.
「これで ぜんぶ のせた」と こぶたくん。「こうつう じゅうたいです」
“There! Everything’s in place,” Oliver declared. “There’s a traffic jam!”
アマンダが レーシンカーを てにとりました。
Amanda picked up a racing car.
「だめ！」と こぶたくん。
“No!” Oliver shouted.
アマンダは なきだしました。
Amanda burst into tears.
「こぶたくん」とうさんは いいました。「一だいぐらい、アマンダにも あそばせて やったって いいんじゃないか」
“Oliver,” said Dad, “can’t you let her play with just one car?”
「だめ」と こぶたくん。「くるまは みんな ぼくのもの」
“No,” Oliver insisted. “All the cars are mine.”
ひるごはんが おわると、こぶたくんは きょうりゅうの 本を とうさんの ところへ もっていきました。
After lunch, Oliver brought a dinosaur book to Dad.
「これ よんで」
“Read this to me.”
こぶたくんと とうさんは、おおきないすに すわって 本を よみました。
Oliver and Dad sat together in the big chair, reading the book.
アマンダは ゆかで 本を よんでいました。
Amanda sat on the floor, reading her own book.
すると こぶたくんが いすから おりてきて、その本を とりあげました。
Then, Oliver climbed down from the chair and took the book from her hands.
「この本、ぼくが よみたいんだ」
“I want to read this one,” he said.
アマンダは なきだしました。
Amanda started crying again.
“「こぶたくん」とうさんは いいました。「本は、ふたりのものに したほうが すてきじゃないかな」
Oliver,” said Dad, “isn’t it nice to share books?”
「だめ。本は みんな ぼくのもの」
“No. All the books are mine.”
本を よみおわると、こぶたくんは つみきを だしてきました。
When they finished reading, Oliver took out his building blocks.
「ぼくは たかーいビルを たてるんだ。二十かいも あるんだぞ。だから アマンダは あっちへ おゆき」
“I’m going to build a super tall skyscraper—twenty stories high! So, Amanda, go play somewhere else.”
そういうと、こぶたくんは ビルを たてだしました。アマンダは それを ながめていました。
Oliver started building his tower while Amanda watched.
ビルは とても たかくなりました。
The building grew taller and taller.
そのとき アマンダが つまさきだちして、てっぺんに つみきを おこうと しました。
Then, Amanda stood on her tiptoes and tried to place a block on top.
「だめ！」と こぶたくん。そして つみきを はらいのけました。
“No!” Oliver shouted and knocked the block away.
すると、ビルは たおれてしまいました。
The whole tower collapsed.
「やだ、やだ、やだ、やだ！」こぶたくんは おおごえで さけびました。
“No, no, no, no!” Oliver screamed.
アマンダは なきはじめました。
Amanda started crying.
とうさんは ふたりを だきしめました。
Dad pulled them both into a hug.
「アマンダが ぼくのビル こわしたんだ」
"Amanda destroyed my building."
「アマンダは、ただ おてつだいしようと しただけなんだよ」とうさんは いいました。「いっしょに つくるなんて すてきじゃないか」
“Amanda just wanted to help,” he said. “Wouldn’t it be fun to build together?”
「そんなことない。ちっともよくない」
“No, it wouldn’t,” Oliver grumbled. “Not fun at all.”
「きみたちには、きょうは どうも 日が わるかったみたいだな」とうさんは いいました。「ばんごはんに なれば、きぶんもかわるさ」
“Well, maybe today just isn’t your day,” Dad said. “But dinner might make things better.”
テーブルには スパゲティと ミートボール、おまめや バターや パンが のっていました。
The table was set with spaghetti, meatballs, beans, butter, and bread.
「これは さいこうだ。ぼくには いっぱい よそってね」と こぶたくん。
“This is the best! Give me a big serving!” Oliver said excitedly.
こぶたくんと とうさんと かあさんは、たべはじめました。
Oliver, Dad, and Mom began eating.
でも アマンダは たべません。
But Amanda didn’t touch her food.
「さあ アマンダ。おくちを あけてごらん。そして めを つぶって」とうさんは いいました。「そうしたら、アマンダに びっくりするほど おいしいものを あげるから」
“Come on, Amanda,” Dad said. “Open your mouth and close your eyes. I’ll give you something super delicious.”
アマンダは くちをあけて めを つぶりました。
Amanda opened her mouth and closed her eyes.
とうさんは ミートボールを いれてやりました。
Dad placed a meatball in her mouth.
すると アマンダは はきだしてしまいました。
Amanda immediately spit it out.
「おくばが はえてきたのかも しれないわ」かあさんが いいました。
“Maybe she’s teething,” said Mom.
こぶたくんには、まめが 二つぶ のこっていました。
Oliver had two beans left on his plate.
一つぶを くちに いれました。
He ate one.
「うまーい」と こぶたくん。
“Yum!” he said.
それから のこった 一つぶを、 アマンダの おさらに いれてやりました。
Then, he placed the last bean on Amanda’s plate.
アマンダは こぶたくんを じっと みつめました。
Amanda looked at Oliver.
それから まめを たべました。
Then, she ate the bean.
こぶたくんは アマンダの おさらに、 スパゲティを ひとすじ いれてやりました。
Oliver added a strand of spaghetti to Amanda’s plate.
アマンダは たべました。
She ate it.
おぶたくんは ミートボールを ひとつ、アマンダの おさらに いれてやりました。
Then, Oliver placed a meatball on her plate.
「うう おいし」アマンダは たべてしまいました。
“Mmm… delicious!” Amanda said, eating it all.
「おやおや これは」と とうさん。「こぶたくんは、アマンダに たべされる ひけつを みつけたぞ」
“Well, well,” said Dad. “Oliver figured out how to get Amanda to eat!”
「きっと そうだわ」と かあさん。
“I think so, too,” said Mom.
こぶたくんは わらいました。
Oliver laughed.
アマンダも わらいました。
Amanda laughed.
そして こぶたくんは、さいごまで とっておいた バタパンまで、かわいい いもうとに やったのでした。
And then, Oliver even gave his last piece of buttered bread to his little sister.

第3章 おばあちゃん OBAACHAN
Chapter 3：Grandma
「ぼくに おてがみ きている？」こぶたの オリバーくんが たずねました。
"Did I get any mail?" asked Oliver, the little pig.
「きているわ」かあさんは、ゆうびんうけから てがみを いくつか とりだしました。
"You sure did," said Mom, taking several letters from the mailbox.
「ベンジャミンぶたの ごかぞくさま」
"To the Benjamin Pig family," she read aloud.
「ごかぞくって ぼくも？」と こぶたくん。
"Family... Does that mean me too?" Oliver asked.
「そうよ」と かあさん。
"Of course," said Mom.
こぶたくんと かあさんと いもうとの アマンダは、てがみを よみました。
Oliver, Mom, and his little sister Amanda read the letter together.
「ごきげん いかがですか。おまねき いただいて、わたくし とても うれしゅう ございます。もくようびの ばんごはんまでに おうかがい いたします。どうぞ よろしく。おばあちゃん」
"How are you all? I was delighted to receive your invitation. I will be visiting in time for Thursday dinner. Looking forward to seeing you. Love, Grandma."
「あら、もくようびって きょうよ」と かあさん。
"Oh my, Thursday is today!" Mom exclaimed.
「これから うんと がんばって おばあちゃんを おむかえしなけりゃ」
"We need to get ready and welcome Grandma!"
「ぼくも うんと がんばる」こぶたくんは いいました。
"I’ll do my best too!" said Oliver.
「まず、おばあちゃんの おへやを おそうじしましょう」かあさんは いいました。
First, Mom suggested they clean Grandma’s room.
かあさんは ゆかそうじを しました。
She cleaned the floor.
こぶたくんは テーブルを いくつも ふきました。
Oliver wiped down several tables.
アマンダは ベッドの したを ふきました。おなかで ふいてしまったんですけれどね。
Amanda wiped under the bed—well, more like she wiped it with her tummy.
そうしたら、なくなっていた こぶたくんの パズルが ひとかけら でてきました。
While cleaning, they found a missing puzzle piece of Oliver’s under the bed.
「テーブルに お花が あると いいわね」かあさんは いいました。
"It would be nice to have flowers on the table," said Mom.
こぶたくんと アマンダは、にわから サンショクスミレを つんできました。
Oliver and Amanda picked pansies from the garden.
かあさんは それを おばあちゃんの ベッドわきに かざりました。
Mom placed them by Grandma’s bedside.
「おばあちゃんは、ベッドで 本を よむのが すきなの」と かあさん。それから おきゃくさまようの まくらを おきました。
"Grandma loves reading in bed," she said, placing a special guest pillow.
こぶたくんは かいぶつの 本と ぬいぐるみの ぞうを はこんできました。
Oliver brought a monster book and his stuffed elephant.
「おばあちゃんは、ぼくの かいぶつの本を よめばいい。ねむるときは ぞうさんを だっこすればいいよ」
"Grandma can read my monster book, and she can cuddle the elephant when she sleeps!"
「それは いいわね」と かあさん。
"That’s a wonderful idea," said Mom.
「これで おばあちゃんの おへやは よしっと。おひるごはんが すんだら、ばんの おりょうりを つくりだすわ」
"Grandma’s room is ready! After lunch, I’ll start cooking dinner."
こぶたくんは、かあさんの りょうりぶりを じっと みていました。
Oliver watched Mom cook carefully.
「かあさん、なにつくってるの？」
"Mom, what are you making?"
「チェリー・パイ」と かあさん。
"Cherry pie," she said.
「おばあちゃん きっと おおよろこび するわよ」
"Grandma will love it!"
「ぼくも おばあちゃん おおよろこびするものを つくってみたい」こぶたくんも いいました。
"I want to make something Grandma will love too!" Oliver said.
こぶたくんは じぶんのへやへ いきました。ほしぶどうの パイを つくって オーブンに いれました。
He went to his room and made a raisin pie, then put it in the oven.
それから いろいろ ほかにも おばあちゃんの ごちそうを つくりました。スパゲッティと ミートボール、シナモンのトースト、チョコレートのプリンに リンゴ・ジュース。
He also prepared other dishes for Grandma—spaghetti and meatballs, cinnamon toast, chocolate pudding, and apple juice.
「これで、おばあちゃんを むかえる したくが できたぞ」と こぶたくん。
"Now we’re ready to welcome Grandma!" said Oliver.
おばあちゃんが みえたのは まもなくでした。
Grandma arrived soon after.
じぶんのへやを みて 「なんて いきとどいた おへや！」よろこんで いいました。
Seeing her room, she smiled. "What a thoughtful space!"
「ごはんですよ」と かあさん。
"Dinner is ready," said Mom.
「まあ、けっこうなこと」と おばあちゃん。
"Oh, how wonderful!" Grandma said.
「クマさんみたいに おなかがすいているのよ」
"I’m as hungry as a bear!"
みんなは テーブルに つきました。
Everyone sat at the table.
「チェリー・パイだわ」と おばあちゃん。「なんて すてきなんでしょう」
"Cherry pie!" Grandma beamed. "How lovely!"
「ぼくも、おばあちゃんに ごちそうつくった」こぶたくんは いいました。
"I made something for you too, Grandma!" Oliver said proudly.
「あのね。ほしぶどうのパイ」
"A raisin pie!"
「ほしぶどうのパイ。まあ だいすき」
"A raisin pie? Oh, I love it!"
ごはんのあと、こぶたくんは おばあちゃんを じぶんの へやに あんないしました。
After dinner, Oliver took Grandma to his room.
おばあちゃんは こぶたくんのテーブルで、スパゲッティと ミートボール、シナモンのトースト、チョコレートのプリン、リンゴ・ジュースと ほしぶどうのパイを たべました。
At his little table, Grandma enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs, cinnamon toast, chocolate pudding, apple juice, and raisin pie he had prepared.
それから おばあちゃんは ゆりいすに すわって、こぶたくんと アマンダを ひざにのせて、ゆっくり ゆすってくれました。
Then, she sat in the rocking chair, placing Oliver and Amanda on her lap, gently rocking them back and forth.
「まだ、クマさんみたいに おなかすいてる？」こぶたくんは たずねました。
"Are you still as hungry as a bear?" Oliver asked.
「いいえ」と おばあちゃん。
"No," said Grandma with a smile.
「チェリー・パイは たべたし、ほしぶどうのパイも たべたし、あなたがたを だっこしたし、おばあちゃんは さいこう。いうことなし！」
"I had cherry pie, raisin pie, and best of all, I got to cuddle both of you. I couldn’t be happier!"
「ぼくも！」
"Me too!" Oliver said.

第4章 ポテトちゃん POTETO CHAN
Chapter 4：Potato-chan
こぶたの オリバーくんは ふってくる ゆきを ながめていました。
Little piglet Oliver was watching the snow falling.
「ぼく、ゆきの おやまの てっぺんに こしかけてみたい。かあさんには、ぼくの そりを ひいてほしいな。あしあとも いっぱい つけたい」
"I want to sit on top of a snowy mountain. I want Mom to pull my sled. And I want to leave lots of footprints!"
「いいわよ」と かあさん。「じゃ、でかける したくを しましょ」
"Alright," said Mom. "Then let's get ready to go out."
かあさんは ゆきよけの コートを もってきてくれました。
Mom brought out a snow coat.
Mom helped Oliver put on his coat, scarf, and hat. Then, she tried to put on his boots.
Amanda brought all of her boots and hats.
"That won't do either," said Mom, putting away the extras again.
こぶたくんは、おばあちゃんが つくってくれた セーターを もってきました。アマンダも、じぶんの セーターを みんな もってきました。
Oliver brought the sweater Grandma had made for him. Amanda brought all of her sweaters.
「それじゃ だめだめ」と かあさん。そして よぶんな セーターを かたづけました。
"That won't do," said Mom, putting away the extras.
かあさんは、こぶたくんに コートを きせました。えりまきや ぼうしも。ながぐつも はかせようとしました。
Mom helped Oliver put on his coat, scarf, and hat. Then, she tried to put on his boots.
アマンダは、じぶんの ながぐつと ぼうしを みんな もってきました。
Amanda brought all of her boots and hats.
「それじゃ だめだめ」と かあさん。そして よぶんなのを みんな しまいました。
"That won't do either," said Mom, putting away the extras again.
「ねえ。みてみて」と こぶたくん。「ぼく、じぶんで ながぐつ はけた」
"Look, look!" Oliver said. "I put on my boots all by myself!"
「りっぱね」と かあさん。
"Well done," said Mom.
かあさんは アマンダに セーターと ゆきよけの コートを きせ、えりまきを させました。
Mom helped Amanda put on her sweater, snow coat, and scarf.
「かあさん」と こぶたくん。「このながぐつ、うまく あるけない」
"Mom," Oliver said, "I can't walk properly in these boots."
「みぎと ひだりを まちがって はいたのよ。なおして あげましょ」と かあさん。
"You put them on the wrong feet. Let's fix them," said Mom.
アマンダは ぼうしを かぶりました。すると めが かくれてしまいました。
Amanda put on her hat, but it covered her eyes.
「それじゃ だめだめ」と かあさん。「こっちへ おいで、アマンダ」
"That won't do," said Mom. "Come here, Amanda."
アマンダは めが みえないので こられません。ころんで しまいました。
But Amanda couldn't see, so she couldn't come over. She stumbled and fell.
コートで ふくらんでいたので おきあがれません。アマンダは なきだしました。
Her coat was so puffy that she couldn't get back up. Amanda started crying.
「なかないのよ。わたしの かわいい ポテトちゃん」と かあさん。
"Don't cry, my sweet little Poteto-chan," said Mom.
かあさんが キスしてあげると、アマンダは なきやみました。
She gave Amanda a kiss, and Amanda stopped crying.
ながぐつを はかせようとしていると、そこへ こぶたくんが、バケツや シャベルや ダンプカーや スチームシャベルを もってきました。
As Mom was about to put on Amanda’s boots, Oliver came over carrying a bucket, shovel, dump truck, and steam shovel.
「ねえ、こぶたくん」と かあさん。「それは すなばで あそぶおもちゃでしょ。ゆきのなかで あそぶものじゃないわ」
"Oliver," said Mom, "those are sandbox toys. You don’t play with those in the snow."
アマンダは ぬいぐるみの ウサギと ひもでひっぱる アヒルを もってきました。
Amanda brought a stuffed rabbit and a pull-along duck.
「それじゃ だめだめ」と かあさん。「それも ゆきあそびの おもちゃじゃ ないでしょ」
"That won’t do either," said Mom. "Those aren’t snow toys."
かあさんは ぜんぶの おもちゃを かたづけました。
Mom put all the toys away.
「さあ、こぶたくんに ミトンを させてあげよ」
"Now, let’s get your mittens on, Oliver."
「ぼく、じぶんで できる」と こぶたくん。
"I can do it myself!" said Oliver.
「りっぱね」と かあさん。
"Well done," said Mom.
「みてみて」と こぶたくん。「ぼく、ミトン みみに はめた」
"Look, look!" Oliver said. "I put my mittens on my ears!"
「こぶたくん。ミトンは みみに はめるもんじゃないって わかってるでしょ」かあさんは ミトンを なおしてやりました。
"Oliver, you know mittens aren’t for your ears," said Mom, fixing them.

Then, Mom picked up both kids and sat them on a big chair.
「さあ おとなしく していられるかしら。かあさん、おおいそぎで コートと ぼうしを つけてくるから」
"Now, can you stay still for a moment? I’ll get my coat and hat on quickly."
したくの おわった かあさんが もどってくると、ふたりは とても おとなしく していました。でも、こぶたくんの ぼうしや えりまきや てぶくろ、それから アマンダのぼうしや えりまきや てぶくろは、ゆかに ちらばっていました。
When Mom came back, both children were very quiet. But Oliver’s hat, scarf, and gloves, as well as Amanda’s hat, scarf, and gloves, were scattered all over the floor.

"What happened here?" Mom asked.
「ぼくたち あつすぎたの」と こぶたくん。
"We got too hot," said Oliver.
かあさんは ソファに すわりこみ、とてもしずかになって しまいました。
Mom sat down on the sofa and went completely silent.
「かあさん どうした？」と こぶたくん。
"Mom, what’s wrong?" asked Oliver.
「かあさんはね、ないているの」と かあさん。
"I’m crying," said Mom.
「あれ、なかないはずなのに」と こぶたくん。
"Huh? But you’re not supposed to cry," said Oliver.
「かあさんてものは なかないものなんだよ」
"Moms aren’t supposed to cry."
「ええ、そうね」と かあさん。
"Yes, that’s true," said Mom.
こぶたくんは かあさんの ひざに のりました。
Oliver climbed onto Mom’s lap.
「ないちゃだめ。かわいい ポテトちゃん。ぼくたち なかよしじゃない」と こぶたくん。
"Don't cry, my sweet little Poteto-chan. We're all best friends, aren’t we?"
アマンダは かあさんに キスを しました。
Amanda gave Mom a kiss.
かあさんは なみだを ふきました。
Mom wiped her tears.
「さあ、もう だいじょうぶ。そとへ いきましょ」
"Alright, I’m okay now. Let’s go outside!"
「わー、うれしい！」と こぶたくん。「ゆきやまの てっぺんに すわって みせるぞ」
"Yay!" Oliver cheered. "I’m going to sit on top of a snowy mountain!"
「あたしは、おむねに なっちゃった」アマンダは いいました。
"I'm just going to be a chestnut," said Amanda.

Chapter 5：Who Could This Be?
「ぼく、かくれたからね」こぶたの オリバーくんは いいました。
"I'm going to hide now!" said Oliver the little piglet.
「もう いいよ」
"You can come find me!"
とうさんが へやに はいってきました。
His father walked into the room.
ようふくだんすのなかを みました。
He checked inside the wardrobe.
おもちゃばこのなかを みました。
He looked inside the toy box.
ベッドのしたを みました。
He peeked under the bed.
「こぶたくんは どこにもいないぞ」とうさんは いいました。
"Oliver is nowhere to be found," said his father.
とうさんは ベッドを のぞきこみました。
Then, he leaned over the bed and took another look.
「おや！」と とうさん。
"Oh my!" said his father.
「ふたつの みみだけが とびだしている。これは なんだい？ でっかい ひぐまかな？」
"I see two ears sticking out. What could this be? A big brown bear?"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「そうか。じゃあ」と とうさん。
"Alright then," said his father.
「しかし、これが ゾウのみみって いうことが あるだろうか？」
"But could they be elephant ears?"
「ないよ」と こぶたくん。
"Nope!" said Oliver.
「わかったぞ」と とうさん。
"I’ve got it!" said his father.
「わがやに ネズミが 一ぴき はいりこんだんだ」
"A little mouse must have snuck into our house!"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「もしかしたら」と とうさん。
"Or maybe…" said his father.
「イモムシかもしれん」
"A caterpillar?"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「じゃあ キュウリかも」
"Then perhaps a cucumber?"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「わかったぞ」と とうさん。
"I know!" said his father.
「スチームシャベルだ」
"A steam shovel!"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「それじゃあ、これしかない」と とうさん。
"Then there's only one possibility left," said his father.
「ミートボール。これだ」
"A meatball! That must be it!"
「ちがうもんね」と こぶたくん。
"No way!" said Oliver.
「いやあ、まいった まいった」と とうさん。
"Oh dear, I'm stumped!" said his father.
「いったい なんなんだね。おしえておくれ」
"What could it be? Please tell me!"
「とうさんの こぶたくんさ」と こぶたくん。
"It's your little piglet!" said Oliver.
とうさんは、こぶたくんの かおに かかっていた かけぶとんを とりました。
His father pulled back the blanket covering Oliver's face.
「おやおや ほんとうだ」とうさんは こぶたくんを だいて キスしました。
"Oh my, you're right!" He scooped Oliver up and gave him a big kiss.そして おふとんで ギュッと くるんでやりました。
Then, he wrapped him up snugly in the blanket.
「おやすみ。とうさんの かわいい こぶたくん」とうさんは いいました。
"Goodnight, my sweet little piglet," his father said.
「おやすみ。とうさん」と こぶたくん。
"Goodnight, Dad," said Oliver.
そして、そのまま ぐっすりと ねむったのでした。
