(Komattasan's Hamburber)
こまったさんの おみせは、えきのまえです。
Komattasan's shop is in front of the station.
小さな小さな、お花やさんです。
It is a tiny, tiny flower shop.
こまったさんは、かんがえて いました。
Komattasan was thinking.
「ばんのおかず、なにに しようかな。」
"What should I make for dinner?"
そこへ、おきゃくさんが きました。
Just then, a customer arrived.
まっ白な スーツに、まっ赤な ネクタイを しめた、わかい男の人でした。
A young man wearing a pure white suit and a bright red tie entered the shop.
「バラと チューリップと カーネーションで 花たばを つくって、ここに とどけてください。」
"Please make a bouquet with roses, tulips, and carnations and deliver it here."
男の人は、お金と いっしょに かみきれを わたしました。
The man handed over a small piece of paper along with the money.
「はい、かしこまりました。」
"Yes, certainly."
かみきれは 地図でした。
The piece of paper was a map.
ところが、こまったさんが 見ると、へんなのです。
However, when Komattasan looked at it, something seemed strange.
えきの そばの ふみきりを わたってからが、おかしいのです。地図には、すぐに みちが 二つに わかれていますが、じっさいには、そんな みちは ありません。
After crossing the railroad crossing near the station, the map showed two diverging paths, but in reality, no such roads existed.
ずっと 一本の 大どおりしか ないはずです。
There should only be one straight main road.
「あなたあ、こまったわ。おかしいのよ。」こまったさんは、ごしゅじんの ヤマさんに いいました。
"Oh no, this is strange." Komattasan told her husband, Yama-san.
ヤマさんは、「お金を はらってくれたんだろう？ まちがった 地図を、かくわけないよ。」
Yama-san said, "But he paid for it, right? He wouldn't have drawn a wrong map."
ヤマさんが、みごとな 花たばを つくりました。
Yama-san made a magnificent bouquet.
「こまったわ。もし、うちが、わからなかったら どうしよう。」
"What if I can't find the place? What should I do?"
こまったさんは、じてんしゃに のって、でかけました。
Komattasan got on her bicycle and set off.
ふみきりを わたって.....。と、わたりきらないうちに、きゅうに ふみきりが、しまりました。
She crossed the railroad tracks... but before she could completely cross, the crossing gate suddenly came down.
「あら、こまった。」こまったさんは、ふみきりのぼうを くぐりぬけました。
"Oh no!" Komattasan ducked under the gate.
すると、どうでしょう。みちが 二つに わかれているでは ありませんか。
Then, to her surprise, the road split into two.
「.....？」
"... ?"
いつもの ケーキやさんも、くすりやさんも、ありません。
The usual cake shop and pharmacy were gone.
見たことのない、くだものやさんや、おもちゃやさんや、きっさてん.....。
Instead, there were unfamiliar fruit stores, toy shops, and cafes.
こまったさんは、こわくなりました。
Komattasan became frightened.
「きみわるいわ。かえろうかしら。」
"This is creepy... maybe I should go back."
ひきかえそうとすると、きゅうに、じてんしゃが、ひとりでに はしりだしました。
As she turned to leave, her bicycle suddenly started moving on its own.
まるで バイクのようです。ものすごい スピードでした。まわりのけしきが、かぜのように ふっとんでいきました。
It sped up like a motorcycle, zooming through the strange scenery at an incredible speed.
そして、ぴたりと とまったところは、白かべの うちのまえでした。
Then, it came to a sudden stop in front of a white-walled house.
ドアが あいて、「やあ、くろうさん。」さっきの 赤ネクタイの 男が、わらっていました。
The door opened, and the man with the red tie smiled.
いや男では.....、人間では ありません。
But he wasn't a man... he wasn't even human.
かおが、キツネでした。
His face was that of a fox.
「さあ、お入りなさい。」
"Come in, please."
手を ひかれて 入ってみると、かべから いすまで まっ白でした。
He took her hand and led her inside, where everything—from the walls to the chairs—was completely white.
こまったさんが、びっくりしていると、「コマッタ、コマッタ。」いったのは、こまったさんが かっている きゅうかんちょうのムノくんでした。
Komattasan was startled when she heard a familiar voice say, "Komatta, komatta." ("Oh no, oh no.") It was Muno-kun, the hill myna bird she owned.
「ど、どうして、ここにいるの？ ムノくん。」
"Muno-kun? Why are you here?"
「イイカラ、イイカラ。」
"Don't worry, don't worry."
ムノくんだけが、まぶしいほど、まっくろでした。
Only Muno-kun was pitch black, standing out in the pure white room.
キツネは、花たばを うけとると、「どうぞ、キッチンに きてください。」いって びっくり。
The fox accepted the bouquet and said, "Please, come to the kitchen."
「いらっしゃい、こまったさん！」
"Welcome, Komattasan!"
大きなクマが、白いフライパンを もって、立っていました。
To Komattasan's shock, a large bear was standing there holding a white frying pan.
ウサギが、白なべの 白いふたを パチパチ たたいていました。
A rabbit was tapping the white lid of a white pot.
ヤギも いました。
There was also a goat.
シカも いました。
And a deer.
白い ゆかを、はしっているのは、リスでした。
A squirrel ran across the white floor.
みんな、白い コックふくをきて、白いぼうしを かぶっていました。
All of them wore white chef uniforms and white hats.
サルが、キツネから 花たばを うけとって、「うまそうな バラですね。」
A monkey took the bouquet from the fox and said, "These roses look delicious."
クマも フライパンをたたいて、「うまそうな カーネーション。」
The bear tapped his frying pan and said, "These carnations look tasty too."
キツネは、「さっそく つくりはじめよう。」
The fox declared, "Let's start cooking!"
すると、どうぶつたちの 手が のびて、花だけを ちぎりはじめました。
Then, the animals stretched out their hands and plucked only the flowers from the bouquet.
バラは ぎゅうにく ぶたにく カーネーション
たがいに あいし あいされて ふたりは なかよく あいびきだ
As they sang: "Roses are beef, carnations are pork, They love each other, and together they blend, A perfect match, hand in hand."
うたを うたいながら、花を みんな、ちぎりとって しまいました。
They removed all the petals.
そして、サルが、にくひききを とり出して、「さあ、みんな、花を入れた、入れた。」
Then, the monkey took out a meat grinder and said, "Come on, everyone, put in the flowers."
ハンドルを カラカラ まわすと

Muno-kun chirped, "Aibiki, aibiki!" (a play on words meaning "blended ground meat")
キツネは、こんどは、チューリップの 花を ちぎりました。
Next, the fox plucked the tulip petals.
みんな とってしまうと、「はっぱは、サラダに するから、つみとって、れいぞうこで、ひやしておこう。」
"We'll use the leaves for salad. Let's store them in the fridge."
こんどは、クマのコックさんです。
Then, the bear chef took over.
チューリップの花は こまかく みじんぎり バターで いためて しんなりさせて
"Chop the tulip petals finely, Sauté them in butter until soft."
白いフライパンで、チューリップの花の みじんぎりを、いためだしたのです。
The bear began frying the minced tulip petals in a white frying pan.
しょくパン はんぶん ミルクに ひたし たまごを 一こ ポンと入れ しおと こしょうは おこのみ しだい よくまぜ よくこね もみ もみ ペタリ
"Half a slice of bread soaked in milk, Crack in one egg, Salt and pepper to taste, Mix well, knead well, Shape it, press it."
こまったさんは、おもわず、「ハンバーグ ステーキ つくるのね。」と、いいました。
Komattasan couldn't help but say, "You're making hamburger steaks!"
キツネは、ひげを ぴんと 立てて、「いいや、ステーキ・バラ・カーチュー、ですよ。」
The fox straightened his whiskers and replied, "No, it's Steak Bara Karchu!"
「へえ、しゃれた 名まえね。おいしそうだわ。」
"What a fancy name! It sounds delicious."
「おいしいですよ。」
"It is!"
クマは、白いフライパンに あぶらを しいて、やきはじめました。
The bear heated oil in the white frying pan and began cooking.
ジュン！ パチ パチ と、音が するほど、つよい火で やきました。
Sizzling sounds filled the air as he used high heat.
こまったさんは、さけびました。「こげつくわ。」
Komattasan cried out, "It'll burn!"
こげめが ついたら ひっくりかえし あとは トロ火で じんわり ジクジク
"Sear it first, then flip it over, Reduce to low heat, let it simmer."
そのときです。ムノくんが いいました。「キマッタ キマッタ、コンヤノ オカズ。」
Just then, Muno-kun announced, "Dinner is decided!"
そうです。ばんごはんのおかずは、ハンバーグです。
Yes, tonight's meal would be hamburg steak.
こまったさんは、「うるさいわね。わたし、いま、そうしようと おもってたのに.....。」
Komattasan sighed, "You're so noisy. I was just about to decide that myself!"
ムノくんの ほっぺたを、つつきました。
She poked Muno-kun on the cheek.
すると、ムノくんは、おこって、「カエロウ、オソクナル。」
Muno-kun got annoyed and said, "Let's go home, it's getting late."
くちばしで、こまったさんの そでを ひっぱって、とぼうとしました。
He grabbed Komattasan's sleeve with his beak and tried to fly away.
クマの コックさんは、「さあ、やけましたよ。ごいっしょに、たべましょう。おいしいワインも、あるんです。」
The bear chef said, "It's ready! Let's eat together. We even have fine wine."
ステーキ・バラ・カーチューを 白いさらに もりつけました。
The Steak Bara Karchu was plated on white dishes.
こまったさんは、「は、はい、いえ.....。」
"Oh, um..."
でも、ムノくんの 力の つよいこと。
But Muno-kun was strong.
みるまに、そとへ ひっぱりだされました。
Before she knew it, she was outside.

そこは、ふみきりの そばの、ケーキやさんの まえでした。
She was standing in front of the cake shop near the railroad crossing.
「あれえー？」
"Huh?!"
いつのまにか、ムノくんも いません。
Muno-kun was gone.
じてんしゃに のっています。
She was sitting on her bicycle.
花たばは ありません。
The bouquet was missing.
こまったさんは、おみせに かえりました。
Komattasan returned to her shop.
ごしゅじんの ヤマさんが、「どこへ いってたんだよ。そろそろ、ばんごはんの じかんだぜ。」
Yama-san asked, "Where were you? It's almost dinner time."
「だって、花たば とどけてきたんですもん。あなただって、しってるでしょ。」
"I delivered the bouquet! You know that, right?"
「しらん！」
"No idea what you're talking about."
「そんなあ。」
"What?!"
わけが わからなくなった こまったさんは、おみせを 出ました。
Feeling completely confused, Komattasan left the shop.
「とにかく、こんばんは ハンバーグだわ。」
"Anyway, tonight, we're having hamburg steak."
かえりに、にくやさんに よりました。
She stopped by the butcher shop.
「バラと カーネ.....じゃない、ひきにく 四百グラム。」
"Not roses and carnations—uh, I mean, 400 grams of ground meat."
「へい、まいど.....。」
"Sure thing."
出された つつみを とおって、みせを 出ようとすると、
As she took the package and was about to leave—
「いやあね、おくさん、それ、わたしのよ。」よびとめられました。
"Hey, lady, that's mine!"
「あら、こまったわ。また、しっぱい しちゃった。」
She had taken the wrong one. "Oh no, I messed up again."
にくやさんは、「はい、こっちですよ。」
The butcher handed her the correct package, "This is it."
こまったさんは、お金を 出して、つつみを うけとると、「さようなら。」はずかしいので、はしって みせを 出ました。
She paid, said "goodbye" and left in embarrassment.
うしろで、「おつり、おつり！」と、さけんでいるのも、気がつきませんでした。
Someone shouted, "Your change!" but she didn't notice.
うちに かえると、ムノくんが、「ハンバーグ、ハンバーグ。」
When she got home, Muno-kun chirped, "Hamburg, hamburg!"
こまったさんは、ああそうか、とおもいました。さっきのことを、ムノくんだけは、しっているのです。
Then she realized—Muno-kun was the only one who remembered what happened.
それで、「ちがうわよ。ステーキ・バラ・カーチューですよ。」と、ふざけて にらみつけました。
She jokingly glared at him. "No, it's Steak Bara Karchu."
それから、やさいかごの なかから、チューリップ、いや、たまねぎを 出そうと しました。
Then she reached for the onion in the vegetable basket—but—
「あら、こまった！」
"Oh no!"
たまねぎが ないのです。
The onion was missing.
ムノくんは、「ワスレモノ、ワスレモノ。」
Muno-kun chirped, "Forgot something, forgot something!"
「しってるわよっ。」あわてて 出かけました。
"I know!" She hurried out again.
あるきながら、やっと、さっき、にくやさんで おつりを もらうのを、わすれたことを おもいだしました。こまった、こまったさんです。
And finally remembered—she had forgotten to collect her change at the butcher shop.
「こまったわ。おそくなっちゃった。」
"Oh no, oh no! I'm running late!"
いそいで、うちに、かえってきた こまったさんは、「さあ、はじめよう。」
She rushed home, ready to make dinner, for real this time.
ごはんに 火をいれました。
She started cooking the rice.
「きょうは、ごはんたくの わすれなかったぞ。さて、まず、たまねぎを きざみましょうか。」
"I didn’t forget to cook the rice today! Now, let’s start by chopping the onion."
そこで おもいだしました。
Then, she remembered something.
やおやさんに、たまねぎの きざみかたを、おそわったのです。
At the grocery store, she had learned how to chop onions.
たまねぎを きざむと、なみだが 出て 目が いたいのです。
When you chop onions, tears come out, and your eyes sting.
なみだが 出ない きざみかたー。
A way to chop onions without tearing up—
「それには、よくきれる ほうちょうを つかうことです。よきざむまえに、ほうちょうを、よくとぐんですね。」
"For that, you need to use a sharp knife. Before chopping, you should sharpen your knife well."
こまったさんは、さっそく やってみることに しました。
Komatta-san decided to give it a try.
ひき出しの おくから、と石を 出してきて、シーコ スーコ シコセコ
She took out a sharpening stone from the back of the drawer and started sharpening— sheeko, suuko, shikoseko.
そのとき、ムノくんが、「オソクナル、オソクナル。」
Just then, Muno-kun said, "You're going to be late! You're going to be late!"
「わかってるわよ。」

さすがに よくきれました。

いつもなら、もう、ごはんのしたくは できあがっているのです。

でも、きょうは、まだ ハンバーグが、やけていません。
But today, the hamburg steaks weren’t cooked yet.
こまったさんより 先に、ムノくんが、「コマッタ、コマッタ。」
Before Komatta-san could say anything, Muno-kun blurted out, "Oh no, oh no!"
そこで ヤマさんは、「きょうは、どうしたの。おかしいよ、きみ。」
Yama-san looked puzzled. "What happened today? Something’s off about you."
「まってて、いますぐだから。」
"Just wait a little bit. It'll be ready soon!"
「ああ、はらへったあ。」
"Aah, I'm starving!"
ヤマさんは、おこって、れいぞうこから ビールを つかみ出して、「先に のんでるぞ。」
Frustrated, Yama-san grabbed a beer from the fridge. "I’m drinking first."
すると、こまったさんは、「ごめんなさい、おいしいワインで なくて。」
Komatta-san apologized, "Sorry, it's not delicious wine."
「いいよ。いいから 早く。」
"It’s fine. Just hurry up."
「こまったわ。」
"Oh no."
サラダを つくるのを、わすれていました。
She had forgotten to make the salad.
しかたがないので、キャベツを きざんで、つけあわせに することに しました。
With no other choice, she chopped up some cabbage for a side dish.
「まず、ハンバーグを やいてから.....。こげめが ついたら、ひっくりかえせばいい。」
"First, I need to cook the hamburg steaks... Once they get a nice crust, I just need to flip them over."
こまったさんは、ハンバーグを 四つ、こしらえる つもりでした。
Komatta-san planned to make four hamburg steaks.
まず、二つだけ、フライパンに のせて、ジュン パチ ジュー パチ

それから、キャベツきりに かかりました。
Then, she started chopping the cabbage.
ほうちょうが、よくきれるので、おもしろいように きざめました。
The knife was so sharp that it made chopping fun.
「.....まるで コックさんみたい。わたしって、おりょうり じょうずね。」と いってるうちに、テーブルにいた ヤマさんが、「コン！」せきを しました。
"I feel just like a real chef! I’m pretty good at this, aren’t I?" she said proudly. Just then, from the table, Yama-san coughed—kon!
「あら、あなた、かぜひいたの.....。」いいおわらないうちに きがつきました。
"Oh no, do you have a cold?" Before she could finish her sentence, she realized—
ハンバーグが、くろこげです。
The hamburg steaks were completely burnt!
「こまったわ。」
"Oh no!"
ひっくりかえして、火をよわめました。
She flipped them over and lowered the heat.
が、ムノくんみたいに、まっくろけ！ しっぱいです。
But they were already as black as Muno-kun! A complete failure.
「いいのよ。こんどは、うまくやるから。」
"It’s okay! I’ll do it right this time."
のこりの にくを、ていねいに やいて、やっとできあがり。
She carefully cooked the remaining hamburg steaks, and finally, they were ready.
ヤマさんは、また、せきを しました。「コン、コン！」
Yama-san coughed again— kon, kon!
こまったさんは、「あなた、もしかしたら キツネ.....？」
Komatta-san looked at him. "Could it be... are you a fox?"
なんとなく、おみせに きた、あの白ふく 赤ネクタイの 男に、にてるように おもえたのです。
For some reason, he reminded her of the man in the white suit and red tie from the store.
「ぼくが、キツネだって？ きみ、どうかしてるよ。それより、なんだい、こんな小さな ハンバーグが、たった一つか。けちだな。」
"Me? A fox? What are you talking about? More importantly, why is there only one tiny hamburg steak? You’re so stingy."
こまったさんは、「わたしの、はんぶん、あげる。」
Komatta-san smiled. "I’ll give you half of mine."
そして、なかよく、ばんごはんに なりました。
And so, they enjoyed their dinner together.
つぎのあさは、とくせいの ハンバーガーと、コーヒー。それに めだまやき.....。
The next morning, she made a special breakfast—hamburgers with coffee and a fried egg.
くろこげハンバーグの、こげを けずりとって、マスタードを たっぷりぬって、ごまかした ハンバーガーでした。
She scraped off the burnt parts of the hamburg steaks, spread a generous amount of mustard, and disguised them as hamburgers.
ヤマさんは、「うまいよ。さいこうだ。」と いって、よろこびました。
Yama-san took a bite. "Delicious! It’s the best!" he said happily.
一ばん ぐっすり ねむったら、もう、せきも とまったようです。
After getting a good night’s sleep, his cough had completely disappeared.
白ふく 赤ネクタイの 男は、二どと あらわれませんでした。
And the man in the white suit and red tie was never seen again.
