(Komattasan's Curry Rice)
こまったさんの おみせは、えきの まえです。
Komattasan's shop is in front of the station.
小さな 小さな、花やさんです。
It’s a very small flower shop.
きょうは、おみせが。ひまでした。
Today, the shop was quiet.
そこで、ごしゅじんの ヤマさんに たのんで、先に、いえに かえって きました。
So, she asked her husband, Yamasan, for permission to leave early and went home.
そこへ、でんわが、かかって きました。
Just then, the phone rang.
「こんばん、ともだちを、ふたり つれて かえるから、ごちそうを つくって、まっててくれ。」
"I'm bringing two friends home tonight, so please make a feast and wait for us."
ヤマさんからの でんわでした。
It was a call from Yamasan.
きゅうかんちょうの ムノくんが、いいました。「コマッタ、コマッタ。」
Muno-kun, the myna bird, said, "Komatta, Komatta."
こったさんは、どきっと しました。
Komattasan was startled.
「ほんと、こまったわ。」
"Oh no, this is a problem!"
すぐに、こまった というので、こまったさんって いわれるのです。
Since she often said "Komatta" (which means "I'm in trouble"), people started calling her "Komattasan."
ヤマさんが つけた、あだなでした。
Her husband, Yamasan, was the one who gave her that nickname.
「こまったわ。ごちそう、なにに しよう。」
"What should I make for the feast?"
そして、りょうりの 本を 出して、しらべはじめました。
She took out a cookbook and began searching.
スパゲティ、ハンバーグ、とんカツ、ビフテキ、オムレツ、かにたま、やさいいため、とりにくのにこめ、マーボーとうふ.....。
Spaghetti, hamburg steak, tonkatsu, beef steak, omelet, crab omelet, stir-fried vegetables, simmered chicken, mabo tofu...
なかなか きまりません。
She couldn't decide.
「いいわ、おかいものに いって、きめましょう。」でかけました。
"I’ll go shopping and decide there." She left the house.
が、すぐに、「こまったわ、さいふを わすれた。」かえってきました。
But almost immediately, she said, "Oh no, I forgot my wallet!" and went back home.
すると、きゅうかんちょうの ムノんが、「カレー、カレー。」
Just then, Muno-kun said, "Curry, curry."
こまったさんは、「なによ。カレーなんて、そんな かんたんなもの、つくらないわ。もっと、ごうかな ごちそうにするのよ。」
Komattasan replied, "What? I’m not making something as simple as curry! I want to make something fancier."
こまったさんは、はりきって、スーパー・マーケットに いきました。
Determined, she went to the supermarket.
が、ムノくんの いったことばが、気にかかります。
But Muno-kun's words lingered in her mind.
「カレーじゃないわよ。」と いって、ぶたにくを かいました。
"I’m not making curry," she said, buying pork.
「カレーなんか、つくるもんですか。」と いって、じゃがいもと、にんじんと、たまねぎを かいました。
"I'm definitely not making curry," she said, buying potatoes, carrots, and onions.
「カレーは、あした なんだから。」と いって、カレー・ルーを 一はこ かいました。
"Since we’re having curry tomorrow," she said, buying a box of curry roux.
それだけ かって、かえってきました。
That was all she bought before heading home.
ムノくんが、また、いいます。「カレー、カレー。」
Muno-kun said again, "Curry, curry."
こまったさんは、「あら、こまったわ。これじゃ、カレーしか つくれない。」
Komattasan sighed, "Oh no… with these ingredients, I can only make curry."
そこで、ムノくんの いうとおり、カレーに することに しました。
So, she decided to follow Muno-kun’s suggestion and make curry.
「いつもより もっと、おいしく つくれば、いいんだわ。」
"I just need to make it extra delicious."
すると、ムノくんが、「テイネイニ、タマネギ、ヨク、イタメル.....。」
Muno-kun said, "Carefully sauté the onions well..."
「わかってるわよ！」
"I know that!"
こまったさんは、ぷいと おこって、たまねぎの かわを むきました。
Annoyed, Komattasan peeled the onions.
二つに きって、それから、うすぎりです。
She cut them in half and then sliced them thinly.
が、きろうとしたとき、「こまったわ。なみだが、出てくるう。。」きるのを やめました。
But as soon as she started chopping, she exclaimed, "Oh no, my eyes are watering!" and stopped.
ムノくんが、いいます。「メガネ、メガネ。」
Muno-kun said, "Goggles, goggles."
こまったさんは、「しってるわよ。そんなこと。」
"I know that already!"
おしいれの 中に、くびを つっこんで、水中めがねを さがしました。
She stuck her head into the storage closet, searching for her swimming goggles.
たまねぎを きると、きり口から、目を いたくする こまかい つぶが、とびだすのです。
When you cut onions, tiny particles fly out that sting your eyes.
だから、水中めがねを つけていれば、いたく なりません。
But if you wear swimming goggles, your eyes won’t hurt.
「こまったわ。どこに しまったのかしら。」
"Oh no, where did I put them?"
こまったさんは、こまった、こまった、と いって さがしました。
She muttered "Komatta, komatta" as she searched.
いちばん おくの はこの 中に、ありました。
She finally found them in a box at the very back.
「これで よし。」水中めがねを つけて、たまねぎを きざむと......。
"Alright!" She put on the swimming goggles and started chopping the onions again...
あれ？
Huh?
きった たまねぎが、さかなに なりました。
The chopped onions turned into fish!
もう一つ きると、それも、さかなに なります。
She chopped another one—another fish appeared!
また、きると、こんどは、えびです。
She chopped again—this time, a shrimp!
さかな、いか、さかな、たこ、さかな、はまぐり、さかな.....。
Fish, squid, fish, octopus, fish, clams, fish…
きるたびに、さかなたちが とびだして、あたりを およぎまわるのです。
Each time she chopped, sea creatures appeared and started swimming around.
「うわあ、うみみたい。」
"Wow, it’s like the ocean!"
こまったさんは、たまねぎを きるのを やめて、さかなたちと、およぎだしました。
Komattasan stopped chopping and began swimming with the fish.
「あら、あんた、かつおじゃない。」
"Oh, you’re a bonito!"
「まってえ、いかさあん。」
"Wait for me, squid!"
いつのまにか、そこは、うみの そこでした。
Before she knew it, she was at the bottom of the sea.
むこうの いわの あなに、もぐって いるのは、えびです。
She saw a shrimp hiding in a hole in a rock.
「おひげが、見えますよ。」
"I see your whiskers!"
こまったさんは、およいで いって、えびを つかまえました。
She swam over and caught the shrimp.
「そうだわ。えびカレーなら、ごうかな ごちそうに なるわ。」
"This is it! Shrimp curry would be a fancy dish!"
すると、えびが、「ぼく 一ぴきじゃ、たりないよ。ともだちの ところに、あんない してあげる。たくさん いるよ。」
But the shrimp said, "Just one of me isn’t enough. I'll take you to my friends—there are plenty!"
「そう。ありがとう。」
"Really? Thanks!"
えびを はなしたら、ツイーッ、ツイーッと、およいで、いってしまいました。
She let go of the shrimp, and it swam away quickly.
「どこよ。そんなに はやく いったら、わかんないじゃない。」
"Where did you go? You swam too fast!"
そのとき、上のほうで、ゴホゴホッと わらいごえが、しました。
Just then, she heard a chuckling sound above her.
まぐろでした。「にげられちゃったのさ。」
It was a tuna. "You lost it, huh?"
こまったさんは、「こまったわ。せっかく、ごちそうが、みつかったのに。」
"Oh no, I finally found a great ingredient!"
「なあに、おれさまが、カレーに なってやるよ。まぐろカレーは うまいんだぞ、しらないか。」
The tuna said, "No worries, I’ll be the curry ingredient! Tuna curry is delicious, you know?"
「おいしそうね。たのむわ。」
"That sounds great! Let’s do it!"
「いいとも。」
"Alright!"
こまったさんは、まぐろを つかまえました。
Komattasan tried to catch the tuna.
が、ぬめぬめっと、手が すべります。
But it was slippery!
それでも、やっと かかえこむと、おもいこと、おもいこと。
She finally hugged it tightly, but it was so heavy!
「こまったわ。」とうてい、もって いけません。
"Oh no, I can’t carry it."
まぐろは、「もてなけりゃ、だめだね。あばよ。」ぬるっと すりぬけて、いってしまいました。
The tuna said, "If you can’t carry me, it won’t work. See ya!" It slipped away.
こんどは、いかです。
Next, a squid appeared.
「わたしを カレーに してごらん。いかカレーの、おいしさを しらないなんて、おきのどく。」
"Try making me into curry! You don’t know how delicious squid curry is, do you?"
こまったさんは、「しってるわ。けど、たべたことが、ないだけよ。」
"I do! But I’ve never eaten it before!"
こんどは、にげられないように、いきなり いかを おさえつけようと しました。
She quickly tried to grab the squid before it could escape.
と、そのとき、いかが、すみを はきだしました。
But at that moment, the squid squirted ink!
シュッ、パパーッ。
「わあっ。」
"Whoa!"
こまったさんは、かおに、すみを あびて、まっくろ.....。
She got covered in ink—completely black!
と、おもったとき、こまったさんは、水中めがねを はずしていました。
Then suddenly, she realized she had taken off her swimming goggles.
「.....。」
...
そこは、もとの だいどころでした。
She was back in her kitchen.
たまねぎも、もとの までした。
The onions were just onions again.
こまったさんは、いかを つかまえようと、手を のばしたとき、たなの上の、のこった みそしるを ひっくり かえして しまったのです。
When she had reached for the squid, she had actually knocked over a leftover bowl of miso soup from the shelf.
すみを あびたのではなしに、みそしるを ひっかけたのでした。
It wasn’t ink—it was miso soup she had spilled on herself.
「こまった、こまった。」
"Oh no, oh no!"
かおを あらって、水中めがねを あらって、やりなおし。
She washed her face, cleaned her goggles, and started over.
こまったさんは、「でも、えびや、さかなのカレーって、おいしそうね。」
"But shrimp or fish curry sounds really delicious."
そうおもって、「こんどは、つかまえるわよ。」と、水中めがねを かけました。
She put her goggles back on and said, "This time, I’ll catch them!"
が、こんどは、さかなが、あらわれませんでした。
But no fish appeared this time.
たまねぎを きりおわると、「もう一つ、たまねぎを、きざんで みようかしら。」
She finished chopping the onions. "Maybe I should chop one more?"
とうとう、二つの たまねぎを、きざんでしまいました。
She ended up chopping two whole onions.
まないたの 上は、たまねぎの 山です。
The cutting board was piled with onions.
「こまったわ。」
"Oh no."
が、しかたありません。
But there was no choice.
せっかく、きざんだのです。
She had already chopped them.
大きな おなべに、たっぷりの バターを 入れて、たまねぎを みんな いためました。
She put plenty of butter in a large pot and sautéed all the onions.
そこへ、ぶたにくを 入れて、これも しっかりと、いためました。
Then, she added the pork and sautéed it well.
「こうすれば、カレーは、いちだんと おいしくなるのでえす。」
"This way, the curry will be extra delicious!"
こまったさんは、うたを うたいだしました。
She started singing:
たまねぎ 十ぷん おにくは 二ふん
"Onions, ten minutes, meat for two
いためて いためて それから あとは
Sauté, sauté, then next
にんじん すって 入れましょう
Grate the carrot,
お水を 入れて にたたせて じゃがいも さいごに 入れるのね
add water, let it boil, then add potatoes..."
にんじんを すりおろしました。
She grated a carrot.
そして、水を 入れて.....。
Then, she added water.
ところが、こまったさんは、「あら、どうしよう、こまったわ。水を 入れすぎちゃった。」
But… "Oh no, I added too much water!"
大きな おなべに、いっぱい 水を 入れてしまったのです。十人まえは、できるでしょう。
The pot was now filled with enough soup for ten people.
が、こまったさんは、あわてません。
But Komattasan didn’t panic.
「カレー・ルーを 十人ぶん 入れれば いいのよ、ね。」
"I just need to add ten servings of curry roux!"
それを 見ていた、きゅうかんちょうの ムノくんが、「コマッタ。ルーガ、タリナイ。」
Muno-kun, who was watching, said, "Komatta! The roux isn’t enough!"
こまったさんは、「かってくれば、いいのよ、ね。」
Komattasan said, "I’ll just go buy more."
そういって、もう一ど、スーパー・マーケットへ はしって いきました。
She rushed to the supermarket again.
マーケットで、ともだちの ぺチャクおばさんに、あいました。
There, she ran into her friend, Pechaku Obasan.
さかなうりばの まえで、ぺチャクおばさんが、ペチャクチャ はなしはじめました。
In front of the fish section, Pechaku Obasan started chatting away.
「ねえ、おくさん。きのうの テレビ、見ました？」
"Hey, did you see the TV show yesterday?"
テレビの はなしから、じぶんの 子どもの はなし、そして、花の はなし、ごちそうの はなしに なって、こまったさんは、おもいだしました。
She kept talking about TV, her children, flowers, and then… food. That reminded Komattasan.
「あらあ、こまった。おなべを かけたまま、きただわ。すぐに かえらないと。」と いうと、さかなうりばで、いかを かっていきました。
"Oh no, I left the pot on the stove! I need to get home!"
あわてていたのです。いかを かいに、きたのではないのに。
But in her hurry, she bought squid by mistake.
すぐに、おもいだしましたが、もうおそい。
She soon realized her mistake, but it was too late.
カレー・ルーを もう一はこ かって、かけてかえりました。
She bought another box of curry roux and rushed home.
こまったさんは、いえに とびこみました。
She burst into the house.
「ダイジョウブ。」ムノくんが、いいました。
"Everything’s fine," said Muno-kun.
こまったさんは、「しってるわよ。スープは、にこめば にこむほど、おいしいのよ。はじめから、ゆっくり してくるつもりだったのよ。」
"I know! The longer it simmers, the better it tastes! I meant to take my time from the start!"
それから、じゃがいもの かわを むきました。
She peeled the potatoes.
もう、夕がたです。
Evening arrived.
こまったさんは、「もう、いつかえってきても、いいわよ。」
Komattasan said, "They could come home anytime now."
じゃがいもを 入れようと したとき、また、でんわが、なりました。
Just as she was about to add the potatoes, the phone rang.
「おきゃくが ふえて、五人くることになったよ。ごちそう、ふやして くれるかな。」
"There are five guests now. Can you make more food?"
ごしゅじんからです。こまったさんは、こまったとは、いいませんでした。
Her husband again. Komattasan didn’t say, "Oh no."
「いいわよ。ちょうどよかった。」にんまりと、わらいました。
Instead, she smiled. "Perfect timing!"
でんわを きってから、「ほんとうは、こんなに こしらえて、どうしようかと、おもったんだけど.....。」
She hung up. "Actually, I was wondering what to do with all this extra curry."
それを きいた ムノくんは、「コマッタ、コマッタ。」
Muno-kun said, "Komatta, komatta."
「こまらないわよ。あとふたりぐらい、ふえても、こまらないんだから。」
But Komattasan replied, "It’s fine! Even if two more guests come, we’ll still have enough!"
そういって、じゃがいもを おなべに 入れました。
And she added the potatoes.
じゃがいもが、やわらかくなったので、カレー・ルーを 入れました。
The potatoes had softened, so Komattasan added the curry roux.
「りんごを 入れると、まお、おいしくなるんですって。」
"If you add apples, it becomes even more delicious," she said.
りんごも、すって 入れました。
So, she grated an apple and added it to the pot.
ちょうど、そのとき、ごしゅじんが、かえってきました。
Just then, her husband returned home.
おきゃくさんは、五人でした。
Their guests had arrived—five in total.
すると、また、ムノくんが、いうのです。「コマッタ、コマッタ。」
At that moment, Munokun spoke up again. "Komatta, komatta." (Oh no, oh no!)
こまったさんは、「うるさいわね。こまった、なんていうと、ばんごはん、あげないから。」と いって、気が つきました。
Komattasan frowned. "You're so noisy. If you keep saying 'komatta' (oh no), I won't give you dinner!" she said. And then—it hit her.
ご・は・んです。
Rice!
ごはんを、たいてなかったのです。
She had forgotten to cook the rice!
「こまったわ、どうしよう。」
"Oh no, what should I do?"
ムノくんが、「アハハハハ.....。」わらいました。
Munokun burst into laughter. "Ahahaha..."
「こまったムノくんね。わかっていたなら、おしえて くれればいいのに。」
"You're such a troublesome bird, Munokun. If you knew, you should have told me earlier!"
ごしゅじんに、そうだんすると、「いいよ。先に、ビールや ウイスキーを のむから。」
When she consulted her husband, he said, "It's fine. We'll have some beer and whiskey first."
「こまったわ。おつまみが、ない。」
"But oh no! We don’t have any snacks to go with the drinks!"
そのとき、ムノくんが、いいました。「イカ、イカ！」
Just then, Munokun chirped, "Ika, ika!" (Squid, squid!)
「あ、そうだわ、わすれてた。」
"Oh, that's right! I forgot about it!"
「ワスレルナ。」
"Don't forget," Munokun said.
こまったさんは、すぐに、ごはんを たくしたくを しました。
Komattasan quickly started cooking the rice.
それから、まちがえて かった いかを きって、バターで、いためました。
Then, she took the squid she had accidentally bought, sliced it up, and sautéed it in butter.
「おさけの おつまみは、いかカレーよ。おいしいんだから。」
"As a snack for drinking, squid curry is perfect! It's delicious!"
でも、おなじような おかずでは、いけません。
But serving two similar dishes wouldn't do.
トマトを 小さく きざんで、いかと いっしょに、いためました。
So, she finely chopped some tomatoes and sautéed them together with the squid.
そこへ、カレーこを たっぷり ふりこんで、「さあ、できあがり。」
Then, she sprinkled a generous amount of curry powder ."And there! It’s done!"
ビールを のんでいる おきゃくさんに、出しました。
She served it to the guests who were enjoying their drinks.
「わあ、うまそう！」みんな、ほめてくれました。
"Wow, this looks amazing!" Everyone praised her.
ごはんが たけて、ごじまんの カレーライスです。
Soon, the rice was ready, and Komattasan proudly served her special curry rice.
ていねいに つくった、ごうかばんの カレーです。
It was a carefully made, luxurious dish.
おきゃくさんは、「まるで、インドに、きたみたい。」よろこびました。
The guests were delighted. "It feels just like we're in India!"
そして、きゅうかんちょうの ムノくんが、「ヨカッタ、ヨカッタ。」うれしそうに いいました。
And then, the talking bird Munokun happily chirped, "Yokatta, yokatta!" (That was great, that was great!)
