Komatta-san’s Sandwich
こまったさんの おみせは えきの まえです。
Komatta-san's shop is located in front of the station.
小さな 小さな 花やさんです。
It’s a small, small flower shop.
あしたは、おみせが、やすみの 日です。
Tomorrow, the shop is closed.
夕がたに なって、ごしゅじんの ヤマさんが きゅうに いいだしました。
In the evening, her husband, Yama-san, suddenly said,
「あした、山へいこう。そろそろ、花が さくころだ。きれいだぜ。」
"Let’s go to the mountains tomorrow. The flowers should be blooming beautifully now!"
もちろん、こまったさんも 大さんせいです。
Of course, Komatta-san agreed.
が、すぐに、「こまったわ、わたし、ぼうしが ないわ」と、いいだしました。
But then she said, "Oh no, I don’t have a hat!"
「おべんとう、なにに しようかしら。こまったわ。」
"And what should I pack for lunch? Oh no!"
すぐに、こまったわ、というのです。
She quickly said, "Oh no!"
それで ヤマさんが、こまったさん、と あだ名を つけました。
And that’s why Yama-san nicknamed her Komatta-san.
こまったさんは、ぼうしを かいに、でかけました。
Komatta-san went out to buy a hat.
「こまったわ。これは、いろが いやだし。」
"Oh no, I don’t like the color of this one."
「これは いいけど、小さすぎるわ。」
"This one is nice, but it’s too small."
そこで、ほかの おみせへ.....。
So she went to another store.
「こまったわ、山へ いくには、りっぱすぎるわ。」
"Oh no, this one is too fancy for hiking in the mountains."
「これじゃあ 男の子みたい.....。」
"This one makes me look like a boy..."
やっと、かってかえったら、もう ヤマさんが、おみせを しめた あとでした。
When she finally bought a hat and came back, Yama-san had already closed the shop.
あわてて、いえに かえると、ムノくんが いうのです。
She hurried home, and Muno-kun said,
「ベントウ、ベントウ。」
"Lunch, lunch!"
そうだ、わすれていた。
Oh no, she had forgotten!
あわてて、また とびだそうと すると、ヤマさんは、
She rushed to go out again, but Yama-san said,
「べんとうより さきに ばんごはんに しようや。はらへったあ。」と、いいます。
"Let’s have dinner first, I’m hungry."
「こまったわ、いましたくするから、さきに ビールでも のんでいて。」
"Oh no, I’ll prepare it right away. Have a beer while you wait."
すると、ムノくんが いいます。
Then, Nomu-kun said,
「ベントウ、サンドイッチガ、イイ」
"For lunch, sandwiches would be good."
「そうね。サンドイッチなら、あしたの あさでも まにあうわ。」
"That’s right, sandwiches would be quick to make in the morning."
あしたは、あさ六時ごろ、いえを 出ることに しました。
They decided to leave the house around six o’clock the next morning.
サンドイッチの パンだけ かってきて、
Komatta-san bought only the bread for the sandwiches,
「これで、あんしん。たまごだけ、かたゆでに しておこう。ハムも チーズも あるし。」
"So that’s sorted. I’ll just boil the eggs. We have ham and cheese too."
こまったさんは、ぐっすり ねむりました。
She went to bed soundly.
あんまり ぐっすり ねすぎて、つい、ゆだん しました。
She slept so soundly that she let her guard down.
「オキロ、オキロ！」
"Wake up! Wake up!"
ムノくんに おこされたら、なんと、もう五時五十分ー。
Muno-kun woke her up, and it was already 5:50 a.m.
「あら、こまったわ。」
"Oh no!"
ヤマさんは、もう、すっかり したくを して まってました。
Yama-san was already fully ready and waiting.
「さあ、でかけよう。」
"Let’s go!"
こまったさんは、あわてました。
Komatta-san panicked.
「まってて。サンドイッチ つくるから。」
"Wait, I need to make the sandwiches!"
パジャマも きがえずに キッチンに とびこみました。
She rushed to the kitchen without even changing out of her pajamas.
「あなたあ、パンきってえ。」
"Cut the bread for me, dear!"
ヤマさんに たのむと。
she asked Yama-san.
「パン、ポン、ピン、カン、トン。」
"Pon, pon, pin, kan, ton," he said.
「なに いってるのよ。」
"What are you talking about?"
「ミカン、リンゴ、パイン、メロン。」
"Orange, apple, pineapple, melon."
「やだあ、ふざけないで。」
"Oh stop it, don’t joke around!"
「かんづめ ワインに、びんづめ ベーコン。」
"Canned wine, jarred bacon."
へんな ことを いう ヤマさんです。
Yama-san kept saying strange things.
みんな ”ン” の つくものばかり。
Everything he said had the letter "n" in it.
ムノくんまでが、いうのです。
Even Muno-kun joined in, saying,
「サンドイッチ モ、”ン” ガ アル。」
"Sandwich also has an ‘n’ in it!"
こまったさんは、おこりだしました。
Komatta-san got angry.
「みんなで、からかうんだから。サンドイッチ、やめた。」
"You’re all teasing me! No more sandwiches!"
ともかく、トイレに いって、かおを あらって、おけしょうも しなくては.....。
She hurried to the bathroom, washed her face, and put on her makeup.
すると ヤマさんは、もう げんかんを 出ようと しています。
Meanwhile, Yama-san was already at the front door, ready to leave.
「いじわるう。わたしも、いく。」
"You’re being mean! I’m coming too!"
こまったさんは、さっと、したくをして、からっぽの ナップザックを せおって、かったばかりの ぼうしを かぶって、「まってえ。」ドアを あけました。
Komatta-san quickly got ready, packed her empty backpack, put on her new hat, and opened the door.
なんと、そこは のはら でした。
To her surprise, it was a field outside!
「ま、まぶしいっ。」
"The sun is so bright!"
こまったさんは、ぼうしを、ふかく かぶり なおしました。
Komatta-san pulled her hat down low over her eyes.
「でんしゃも バスも のらないのに、もう ついちゃったのね。」
"We’re already here, even though we didn’t take a train or bus!"
そして、「やっほーっ、ヤマさあん、どこお？」よんでみました。
She called out, "Yama-san, where are you?"
むこうに 山が ならんでいます。
In the distance, mountains were lined up.
山の ふもとに、緑の森が ありました。
At the foot of the mountains, there was a green forest.
「きっと、あの森に かくれているんだわ。」
"They must be hiding in that forest."
こまったさんは、あるきだしました。
Komatta-san started walking.
そのときです。くさむらの 中から、いぬが かおを 出しました。
Just then, a dog poked its head out from the grass.
いぬは、「こまったさん、どこへ いくんですか？」と、ききました。
"Where are you going, Komatta-san?" the dog asked.
「むこうの 山まで、山のぼり。」
"To the mountains for a hike."
「ナップザックの 中に、はいっているのは なんですか。」
"What’s in your backpack?"
「なんにも はいっていないのよ。おべんとう つくる ひまが なかったの。」
"Nothing. I didn’t have time to make lunch."
「パンを あげるから、つれてって ください。」
"I’ll give you bread if you take me along."
「え？」
"What?"
いぬは、てじなの ように、しょくパンの かたまりを、とりだしました。
The dog magically produced a loaf of bread.
こまったさんは、うれしくなって、
Komatta-san, delighted, said,
「いきましょ、いきましょ、いっしょに おいで。」
"Let’s go! Come along!"
ナップザックに、パンをつめて、いきました。
She packed the bread into her backpack and continued.
しばらくいくと、こんどは、いわかげから、さるが 出てきました。
After a while, a monkey appeared from behind a rock.
「こまったさん、どこへいくんですか？」と、ききました。
"Where are you going, Komatta-san?"
「むこうの 山まで、山のぼり。」
"To the mountains for a hike."
「ナップザックの 中に、はいっているのは なんですか？」
"What’s in your backpack?"
「パンよ。」
"Bread."
「それでは、たりません。ぼくも、あげるから、つれてってください。」
"That’s not enough. I’ll give you some bread too if you take me along."
「え？」
"What?"
さるは、ほそながい フランスパンを、とりだしました。
The monkey pulled out a long baguette.
こまったさんは、うれしくなって、
Delighted, Komatta-san said,
「いきましょ、いきましょ、いっしょに おいで。」
ナップザックに パンを さしこんで、いいました。
She stuffed the baguette into her backpack and continued.
もうすぐ 森です。
They were almost at the forest.
すると 森の 上から バタタタ ササザザ、とりが とんできました。
Suddenly, a bird flew down from above, flapping his wings.
ムノくん でした。
It was Muno-kun.
こまったさんは、うれしくなって、「いきましょ、いきましょ、いっしょに おいで。」と、いいました。
Komatta-san, delighted, said, "Let’s go! Come along!"
「ダメ、ダメ、イクト、タベラレチャウ。ヤマサン ツカマッタ。」
"No, no! If we go, we’ll get eaten! Yama-san has been captured!"
なにを いってるのか、わかりません。
Komatta-san didn’t understand,
こまったさんは、「へいき、へいき。わたしには、いぬも、さるも、ついているのよ。ノムくんが いれば、日本一の こまったさん なんだから。」
Komatta-san replied "It’s okay. I’ve got the dog and the monkey with me, and with Nomu-kun, I’m the number one Komatta-san in Japan!"
森の中に、はいって いきました。
They entered the forest.
森に はいって、びっくり しました。
Inside, Komatta-san was amazed.
花が、びっしり しきつめたように、さいているのです。
Flowers were blooming everywhere, as if the ground was covered in them.
花ばたけの ようでした。
It looked like a flower field.
「すてき！こんな ところに、小さな いえを たてて、ヤマさんと いっしょに、くらしたいわ。」
"How lovely! I’d love to build a little house here and live with Yama-san."
こまったさんは、おどりだしました。
Komatta-san started dancing.
い ぬも、さるも、花の あいだを、はねまわりました。
The dog and monkey hopped around among the flowers.
ムノくんだけが、「ダメ、ダメ。」を、くりかえしました。
Only Muno-kun kept saying, "No, no."
すこし いくと、木の えだから、ふだが さがっていました。
After a while, they came to a tree with a sign hanging from it.
『ようこそ、パン、ただし、メロンパン、アンパン、クロワッサンは、おことわり。』
"Welcome! Bread only, no melon bread, anpan, or croissants allowed."
こまったさんは、「おもしろい。わたしの もっているのは、しょくパンに、フランスパンだから、いいのね。」
Komatta-san thought, "That’s funny! I only have regular bread and a baguette, so it’s fine!"
さらに いくと、木の えだから、つるに なった 花が まるで カーテンのように、たくさん さいていました。
As they went further, they came to a tree with vines full of flowers hanging down like curtains.
そこに、また、ふだです。
There was another sign.
『やきたてよりも、一日おいた パンがいい。』
"Day-old bread is better than freshly baked."
こまったさんは、くびを かしげました。
Komatta-san tilted her head.
「ともかく、いきましょ。」
"Let’s keep going anyway."
カーテンを くぐっていくと、こんどは 大きな サボテンが、にょき にょき.....。
They passed through the curtain of flowers, and then they encountered a giant cactus, spiny and tall.
とげが ささりそうで、もう、さきには、すすめません。
The thorns looked sharp, and it seemed impossible to pass.
でも、そのとげから、ふだが さがっていて、
But there was a sign hanging from one of the thorns,
『したくは、いつも、そろっている。早く たべたい。いらっしゃい。』
"Everything is ready, Want to eat soon. Please come."
こまったさんは、なんだか たのしく なりました。
Komatta-san was starting to have fun.
それで、サボテンの あいだを、うまく すりぬけて、とおっていきました。
So, she carefully squeezed through the cactus.
いぬも、さるも、ついてきました。
The dog and monkey followed.
ノムくんは、「アイテハ、コマッタサンヲ、タベタインダ。イケバ、タベラレル。」
Nomu-kun said, "They want to eat you, Komatta-san. If you go, you’ll get eaten."
「あ、そうか。」
"Oh no!"
気がづいたときには、もう、おそかったのです。
It was already too late, when she realized.
サボテンを ふみたおしながら、大きな 青おにが、やってきました。
A huge blue ogre came stomping through the cactus,
木の はが ゆれるような 大ごえで、「やあ、きたな！」
making the trees shake with his loud voice. "Ah, here you are!"
石の ような かたい うでに、だきかかえられて いました。
With arms as hard as stone, he grabbed Komatta-san.
「におう、におう、いい かおりだあ。」
"Mmm, you smell delicious!"
もう、だめです。
It was over.
こまったさんは、気を うしなって しまいました。
Komatta-san fainted.
いぬと、さるは、にげて いってしまいました。
The dog and monkey ran away.
気が ついたとき、おにの いえに、ねかされていました。
When she came to, Komatta-san found herself lying in the ogre’s house.
木の ベッドに、とらの かわが、かけてありました。
There was a bed made of wood, covered with a tiger skin.
「おいしい 人間の たべかた。」
There was a TV next to the bed, and it was showing a program called "Delicious Ways to Cook Humans."
がめんが かわって、「きょうは、かわった おへその、にこみ りょうりです。ざいりょうは、人間の でべそを 十こ.....。」
The screen changed, showing, "Today’s dish is a special bellybutton stew. The ingredients are 10 human bellybuttons..."
こまったさんは、また、気を うしなう ところ でした。
Komatta-san almost fainted again,
が、そのとき、さっきの 青おにが、
but at that moment, the blue ogre said,
「テレビ、とめろっ。もう、人間は たべあきた。おれが たべたいのは、サンドイッチだ。」
"Turn off the TV! I’m tired of eating humans. What I really want is a sandwich."
すると、おくさんらしい 赤おにが、
Then, the red ogre, who seemed to be his wife, asked,
「じゃあ、さっきの 人間、ゆでないで、すててしまうんですか。」
"Shall we throw away the human we just caught without cooking them?"
「そうしろ。」
"Yes, throw them out."
「はい。」
"Okay."
青おにが、こまったさんの ところに、やってきました。
The blue ogre came to Komatta-san and said,
「おまえは、すてないぞ。こっちに きて、サンドイッチを つくってもらう。」
"You’re not going anywhere! You’ll make me a sandwich!"
だいどころに、ひっぱって いかれました。
He dragged her into the kitchen.
そこに いたのは、からだじゅう、びっしょりに なった ヤマさんでした。
There, she found Yama-san, soaked with sweat.
「あ、あなた。」
"Dear!"
「たすかったよ。まるゆでに される ところさ。」
"You saved me! I was almost boiled alive."
こまったさんは、しかたなく、サンドイッチを つくることに しました。
Komatta-san had no choice but to make sandwiches.
どうやって、ここを にげだすかは、つくったあとで かんがえればいいー。
"I’ll figure out how to escape after I make them..."
赤おにのおくさんが、「なにが いるのか、いって。」と、いいます。
The red ogre asked her, "What do you need for the sandwiches?"
「バター、からし、サラダな、たまねぎ、トマト、ハム、チーズ、ツナ.....。」
"Butter, mustard, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, ham, cheese, tuna..."
すると、いつのまにか、ムノくんが きていて、「タマゴ、マヨネーズ、ヨーグルト。」
Suddenly, Muno-kun appeared, saying, "Eggs, mayonnaise, yogurt."
赤おにおくさんは、「そんなに、いっぺんに いったって、わからないよ。一つずつ、いっておくれ。」
The red ogre wife said, "That’s too many things at once! Tell me one thing at a time."
こまったさんは、いわれる とおりに、「バター。」
Komatta-san said, "Butter."
おどろきました！
To her surprise,
赤おにおくさんは、うちでの こづちを ふって、いわれたものを 出したのです。
The red ogre wife waved a magic mallet and made the ingredients appear.
それを 見ながら、ヤマさんが いいました。
Yama-san watched in amazement.
「じゃあ、パンだって、出てくるはずだ。」
"Then we should be able to get bread too!"
すると、青おにが、「こいつは、”ン” の つくものを ださないんだ、だから、サンドイッチも 出ない。」
The blue ogre said, "This magic can’t produce anything with an ‘n’ in its name, so we can’t get a sandwich."
「.....。」
ぜんぶ 出しおわると、こまったさんは、「まず、パンを きりましょう。」
Komatta-san finished gathering all the ingredients and began, "Let’s cut the bread."
ところが、こわくて ふるえているので、うまく、うすく、きれません。
But she was so scared that her hands were shaking, and she couldn’t cut the bread evenly.
ムノくんが、いいました。
Nomu-kun said,
「パンヲ、キルトキ、ホウチョウヲ、アタタメレバ ヨク キレル。」
"If you warm the knife, it’ll cut better."
こまったさんは、なにも いえません。
Komatta-san could not say anything.
いわれた とおり、しょくパンを、きりおわりました。
She followed his advice and finished cutting the bread.
Next, she prepared
こんどは、ほそながい フランスパン。
Next, there was a long baguette.
きろうとして、はじめて、くすっと わらいました。
As she was about to cut it, Komatta-san chuckled for the first time.
「おにが、たべるんだから、おもしろいのを つくろう.....。」
"Since the oni (ogres) are going to eat it, let’s make something fun…"
パンを きりはなさずに、きれめだけ 入れて.....。
Without cutting the bread all the way through, she just made slits in it.
「さあ、つぎ、たまごを ゆでるの。ヤマさん、やって、かたゆでに してね。」
"Now, let’s boil the eggs. Yama-san, can you do that? Make them hard-boiled."
「十五分くらいだね。」
"About 15 minutes, right?"
「そう、ゆだったら、すぐに、つめたい 水に 入れるのよ。そうすると、からが、きれいに むけるわ。」
"Yes, and once they’re done, put them in cold water immediately. That way, the shells will peel off nicely."
「オーケー。」
"Okay."
バターが かたくては、うまく、パンに ぬれません。
The butter was too hard to spread smoothly on the bread.
こまかく きって、火の そばに おいて、すこし やわらかく なったら、ナイフでまぜる。
She cut it into small pieces and placed them near the fire to soften a bit, then mixed them with a knife.
ムノくんが、やかましいのです。
Nomu-kun was being noisy.
「トケルマデ、アタタメチャ、ダメ！」
"Don’t warm it until it melts!"
「わかったわよ。」
"Okay, I got it."
だんだん、こまったさんも、げんきが 出てきました。
Gradually, Komatta-san started to feel more energetic.
それから ツナです。
Next, she prepared the tuna.
あれ？かんづめでは ありません。
Wait, it wasn’t canned?
そうそう、かんづめには ”ン” がつきます。オイル・ツナ。
That's right! Canned food contains an ‘n,’ so it’s forbidden! Oil tune.
「かんを きる てまが はぶけて、いいわ。」
"That's great that I can save the time to open a can."
たまねぎの、みじんぎり。
Next, she minced the onions.
トン タン タン ザク ザッザッザ
*Chop, chop, chop. Slice, slice, slice.*
赤おにおくさんが、「うまいもんだ。おにより 人間の ほうが うまいものって、あるんだね。」と、かんしん しました。
Red Oni wife was impressed, saying, "Wow, humans are better at cooking than oni."
こまかく ちぎった ツナに、たまねぎを まぜ、マヨネーズで あえるのです。しおと こしょうを すこしずつ。
Komatta-san mixed the tuna with onions and mayonnaise, seasoning it with a little salt and pepper.
「サラダなは、水に つけて、パリッと させてね。」
"Lettuce needs to be soaked in water to make it crisp,"
ヤマさんが、いっしょうけんめい、はたらきます。
Yama-san worked hard.
ゆでたまごも、できました。
The boiled eggs were ready.
白みと 黄みと きりわけて 白みは こまかく きりきざい
Komatta-san separated the whites and yolks. She finely chopped the whites
黄みは スプーンで よくつぶし そこへ マヨネーズ ヨーグルト
and mashed the yolks with a spoon, then mixed in mayonnaise and yogurt
とろりと するまで よくまぜる 白みを 入れれば できあがり
until the mixture became creamy. She added the whites, and it was done.
パンに バターを ぬりました。からしもー。
She spread butter and mustard on the sliced bread.
しょくパンの サンドイッチが、できました。
The sandwiches made with regular sliced bread were complete.
「さあ、たべるぞ。うまそう。」
"Now, time to eat. Looks delicious."
青おにが、手を出すので、こまったさんは、「まだ だめ。ぐが、よく なじむまで、ふきんで しっかり つつんでおくの。それから、きって あげますよ。」
As the blue oni reached out for the sandwich, Komatta-san said, "Not yet. The flavors need to meld together, so wrap them tightly in a cloth. I’ll cut them later."
おにを、またせておいて、ながい フランスパンの ほうに かかります。
After making the oni wait a bit longer, she turned her attention to the long baguette.
「こっちの サンドイッチは、できたら すぐに、たべても いいのよ。」と、いって、こまったさんは、にやりと わらいました。
"You can eat this sandwich as soon as it’s ready," she said with a sly smile.
ーからしを、たっぷり つけて やるわー。
"I’ll smother it with mustard," she thought.
パンの きり口 りょうほうに、からしを、ぶあつく ぬりこみました。
She spread a thick layer of mustard on both sides of the baguette, where the slits were.
そしてー。できあがり。
Finally, it was ready.
「もう、まてない。」
"I can’t wait any longer."
青おにが 左の はじから、赤おにが 右の はじから、一どに かみつきました。
The blue oni bit into the left side, while the red oni bit into the right side.
「からいっ。」
"Spicy!"
「からいっ！」
"So spicy!"
からしに おどろいて、おにたちが、とびあがりました。
Startled by the mustard’s spiciness, the oni jumped up in surprise.
とびあがった おにが、しりもちを ついて、どしん！
As they jumped, they both landed hard on the ground with a thud!
こまったさんは、そこで 目を さましました。
It was then that Komatta-san woke up.
さました とたん、目ざましが、なりだしたのです。
Just as she woke, the alarm clock started ringing.
「ああ、ゆめだったのね。」
"Oh, it was all just a dream."
こまったさんは、あせを かいていました。まるで からしを なめた とき みたい。
Komatta-san was sweating, as if she had just eaten something spicy like mustard.
「さあ、すぐに、サンドイッチ つくらなくちゃ。」
"I’ve got to make those sandwiches right away."
げんきに おきあがりました。
She got up with energy.
ヤマさんは、まだ、ねむっています。
Yama-san was still fast asleep.
「ムーン、ン。ン、ン、ン。」
"Moon, mmm, mmm."
