(KOMATTASAN'S SALAD)
こまったさんの みせは、えきの まえです。
Komattasan's shop is in front of the station.
小さな 小さな、花やさんです。
It is a very small flower shop.
きょうは、あさから 大いそがしでした。
Today has been busy since the morning.
ゆうがた ちかくには、ほとんど うれてしまいました。
By evening, most of the flowers were sold out.
こまったさんは、「こまったわ。うる お花が なくなっちゃう。」
Komattasan said, "Oh dear, I have no more flowers left to sell."
うれしいときも、こまったというのです。
Even when she is happy, she says "Oh dear."
それで、ごしゅじんの ヤマさんが、こまったさんと あだ名を つけたのです。
That is why her husband, Yamasan, gave her the nickname "Komattasan."
ヤマさんは、「あとは たのんだよ。ばんごはんまでには かえる。」と いって、パチンコやさんに いってしまいました。
Yamasan said, "I'll leave the rest to you. I'll be back by dinner time." Then he went off to the pachinko parlor.
「すこし はやいけど、おみせをしめて、うちにかえって、おいしいもの つくろう。」

そとに 出ている のこった花を、みせの 中に しまいました。

三つ のこった 赤いバラの むこうから、かおを 出したのは、なんと、まじょでした。

まっ黒な しわくちゃ 三かくぼうし、とんがりばな、ほそながめがね、まっ赤な くちびるが、耳の そばまで つりあがって.....。
She had a pitch-black, wrinkled triangular hat, a pointy nose, long narrow glasses, and bright red lips that stretched up to her ears.
「わたし.....。こまった。」こまったさんは、うごけなく なってしまいました。
"Oh dear..." Komattasan was frozen in place.
「わしは、こまらんなあ。ほうれ、サラダの ざいりょうは、たくさんあるし.....。」
"I have nothing to worry about. Look, there's plenty of salad ingredients."
まじょは、いつのまにか、みせの ほうきを ふりあげていました。
Before she knew it, the witch had raised a broom from the shop.
そして、うれのこった 花を、つぎつぎに、つついて まわりました。
She waved it around, tapping the remaining flowers one by one.
サラダの いのちは しんせんな やさい
The essence of a salad is fresh vegetables.
もぎたて ほりたて ピピンと シャキリ
Picked and dug up, crisp and fresh!
みせの 中が、すっかり かわってしまいました。
The entire shop transformed.
まるで、やおやさんです。
It was like a vegetable store!
トマトに キュウリ、タマネギ、ニンジン、レタスに セロリ、パセリに レモン.....。
Tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots, lettuce, celery, parsley, lemons...
イチゴも あれば、リンゴも、ミカンも。

「ウキキキキ。ざいりょうは、そろった。さあ、すきなだけ、はこびなさい。」

「かんけいないね。かんけいあるのは、こんやの おかず。そして、このほうきじゃ。」

「ほうき？」
"Broom?"
「わしと したことが、ほうきを なくしてしまって、こまっていたのよ。さがしていたら、このみせに あったと いうわけ。もらっていくぞ。そのかわり、やさいと くだもの、みんな おまえの ものさ。」
"I, of all people, lost my broom and was in trouble. When I searched for it, I found one in your shop. I'll take it. In exchange, all these vegetables and fruits are yours"
まじょは、それから、ほうきを もう一ふり しました。
Then, the witch swung the broom once more.
「さあ、でかけよう。」びっくりしました。
"Let's go." Komattasan was startled.
そとには、馬車が とまっていました。
A carriage was waiting outside.
シンデレラが のっていたような、と いいたいところですが、カボチャではなく、ジャガイモの 馬車でした。
It looked like the one Cinderella rode in, but instead of a pumpkin, it was a potato carriage.
「さあ、なにを ぐつぐつしているんだ。やさいを はこんだ はこんだ。」
"What are you waiting for? Load the vegetables, load them up!"
こまったさんは、なんだか たのしく なってきました。
Komattasan started to feel excited.
やさいを はこにつめて、馬車に のせました。
She packed the vegetables into boxes and loaded them onto the carriage.
すると、馬車の てんじょうで、「コマッタ、コマッタ。」ムノくんです。
Then, from the ceiling of the carriage came a voice, "Komatta, komatta."
こまったさんが、家で かっている きゅうかんちょうの ムノくんが、いるのです。
It was Munokun, the talking mynah bird Komattasan kept at home!
「ムノくん、あんた、こんなところに きちゃ だめじゃない。どうしたの？」と いわれても、「コマッタ、コマッタ。マヨネーズ、ナイ。」
"Munokun! You shouldn't be here. What are you doing?" she asked. But he only replied, "Komatta, komatta. No mayonnaise."
そうです。こまったさんは、家に マヨネーズが ないのを、おもいだしました。
That’s right! Komattasan remembered she had no mayonnaise at home.
「いいわよ。スーパーマーケットで、かうから。」
"It's fine. I'll buy some at the supermarket."
馬車が、ガタンと ゆれて、はしりだしました。
The carriage jolted and started moving.
はしっているのは、見たこともない、でこぼこみちでした。
It traveled down a bumpy road she had never seen before.
「ここ、どこなの？ まじょさん。」
"Where are we? Witch?"
「しらんね。わしは、ほうきの おれいが したいだけさ。」
"No idea. I just wanted to thank you for the broom."
馬車は、森の中に 入っていきました。
The carriage entered a forest.
しばらくいくと、きたならしい 小屋が ありました。
After a while, they arrived at a shabby hut.
馬車が とまりました。
The carriage stopped.
まじょは、「ついておいで。」と 黒いマントを ひるがして、おりていきました。
The witch said, "Follow me." She swirled her black cape and got off.
こまったさんが、ついていくと、入り口の ところに メンドリが いました。
As Komattasan followed, she saw a hen at the entrance.
ぴょこんと、おじぎをしました。
The hen bowed politely.
そして、ポン！と たまごを 一つ、うみました。
Then—Pop!—it laid an egg.
「たまごが マヨネーズの きめて！ そして、サラダに たまごは つきものよ。」
"Eggs are the key to mayonnaise! And eggs belong in a salad."
ぴょこんと、またおじぎをして、たまごを ポン！
The hen bowed again—Pop! Another egg!
「これは、かたゆでたまご、もう一つ かたゆで。」
"This one's for a hard-boiled egg. Another one for another hard-boiled egg."

すると、小屋の中から、まじょが、「なにを している、たまごを もっておいで。」と いったとたんに、メンドリは バタワサバタタタ.....。
Just then, from inside the hut, the witch called out, "What are you doing? Bring the eggs!"
空のほうに、とんでいってしまいました。
The hen suddenly flapped its wings and flew into the sky!
こまったさんは、たまごを ひろって、中に 入りました。
Komattasan picked up the eggs and entered the hut.
中には テーブルが 一つ。
Inside was a single table.
テーブルの 上に、ガラスの ボールと あわだてき、それに コップと、スプーンが 二つ。
On it were a glass bowl, a whisk, a cup, and two spoons.
まじょが いいました。「たまごを わって、黄みだけ つかう。」
The witch said, "Crack the eggs and use only the yolk."
どうやら、マヨネーズを つくるらしいのです。
It seemed they were going to make mayonnaise.
こまったさんが、たまごを わろうとすると、ムノくんが、「コマッタ、コマッタ、ソレ、カタユデ。」
When Komattasan cracked an egg, Munokun squawked, "Komatta, komatta, that's a hard-boiled one."
こまったさんは、おこって、「あんたに なんか、わかるわけ ないでしょ。」
Annoyed, she said, "What would you know?"
ためしに わってみると、やはり、うみたての かたゆでたまごでした。
But when she checked—sure enough, it was a hard-boiled egg!
まじょは、大口を あけて 大わらい。
The witch laughed heartily.
「さあ、はじめるよ。たまごの 黄み、マスタード、しお、それに こしょうが すこし、これを よくまぜあわせる。ていねいに、ていねいに.....。」
"Now, let’s begin! Mix egg yolk, mustard, salt, and a little pepper together. Stir carefully, carefully..."
まじょは、こまったさんの 手つきを 見て、おおげさに ほめました。
As Komattasan mixed, the witch praised her exaggeratedly.
「うまい！ おまえさん、まじょに なれるかもよ。さあ、そこへ サラダオイルを すこしずつ、たらすように.....。そうだ、そうだ。かきまわすのを、とめたらいかん。ほうら、だんだん、マヨネーズらしくなってきた。オイルを みんな入れても、やめたらいかん。かたくなるまで、かたくなるまで.....。ようし、おみごと。こんどは すを、これも すこしずつ、すこしずつ.....。」
"You're good! You might become a witch yourself. Now, add the salad oil little by little. Keep stirring, don’t stop! See? It’s turning into mayonnaise. Keep going until it thickens... Well done! Now add vinegar, a little at a time..."
まじょは、うたいだしました。
The witch started singing:
まじょは まほうで、マヨネーズ つくる
A witch makes mayonnaise with magic.
人は ひとりで つくりかた まねる
A human mimics the recipe alone.
うたいおわったとき、もう、こったさんたちは、馬車の中に いるのでした。
By the time she finished singing, they were back in the carriage.
つくった マヨネーズと、すと、サラダオイルの びんも、ちゃんと のっていました。
The mayonnaise, vinegar, and a bottle of salad oil were neatly placed inside too.
馬車は、森を ぬけました。
The carriage left the forest.
「サラダへの みちは とおい。そして、おもわぬことも、おこるもの。ウケケ、キッ！」
"The path to salad is long. And unexpected things happen. Hehehe, haha!"
まじょが いったとたん、むこうから ウシが やってきました。
Just then, a cow appeared ahead.
ウシは、馬車を よけようとも しません。なんだか、おこっている ようです。
It didn’t move aside. It looked angry.
つのを ふりたてて.....。
Shaking its horns furiously....
「こまったわ。あのウシ。ぶつかっちゃう。」
"Oh dear. That cow—it’s going to crash into us!"
ウシは、もう 目のまえです。
The cow was right in front of them!
と、ウシが 大きく 大きく なって、大きな ウシが、大きな 口を あけたので、ジャガイモ馬車は、いっきに、ウシの おなかに とびこんで しまいました。
Suddenly, the cow grew larger and larger. It opened its huge mouth wide, and the potato carriage flew straight into its belly!
「ぎゃっ！」こまったさんは、ひめいを あげました。
"Ahhh!" Komattasan screamed.
が、どうしたことでしょう。
目を あけてみると、中は、ひるまより あかるいくらいでした。
But when she opened her eyes, it was bright inside—brighter than daytime!
まわりの かべに、ぎっしりと、ミルクの パックが ならべて ありました。
The walls were lined with milk cartons.
ムノくんが いいました。「ミルク、ナマクリーム。ヨーグルト。ソレカラ、チーズモ、モッテイコウ。」
Munokun chirped, "Milk, fresh cream, yogurt. Let’s take some cheese too."
まじょも、いうのです。「よくばるんじゃない。一つずつだよ。」
The witch added, "Don’t be greedy. Just take one of each."
馬車は、すすみました。
The carriage moved forward.
つぎの へやは、ハムや ソーセージが ぶらさがっている へやでした。
The next room had hams and sausages hanging from the ceiling.
「ハム、ベーコン、ソーセージ、サラミ.....。ミンナ、モッテイコウ。」
"Ham, bacon, sausage, salami… Let’s take them all!"
こまったさんは、うれしくなりました。
Komattasan was thrilled.
ヤマさんの すきなベーコンが、たくさんあります。
She saw Yamasan’s favorite bacon.
ひととおり とったあと、「ベーコンだけは、二つ いただこう。」と よくばったとたん、馬車は、そとに はじきだされてしまいました。
After picking what she needed, she thought, "I'll take two bacons." The moment she got greedy, the carriage was thrown out!
「ああ、おどろいた。」
"Oh my, what a shock!"
こまったさんが、ふりむくと、大きな 大きな ブタが、おしりを 見せて、はしっていく ところでした。
When she turned around, she saw a giant pig running away, showing its rear.
「へんなの、ウシの口から 入って、ブタの おしりから 出たのね。」
"How strange. We entered through a cow's mouth and exited through a pig’s bottom!"
馬車は、うみの そばに 出ました。
The carriage reached the sea.
もう、すなはまを すぎて、なみうちぎわ.....。そして、うみの 中へ！
Before she knew it, they were in the ocean!
ムノくんが、「ヤマサン、カニサラダ、スキ。」と いいました。
Munokun chirped, "Yamasan loves crab salad."
「わたしは、ツナサラダが すきよ。」
"I love tuna salad," Komattasan added.
かんづめを 二つ、つかまえたとき、もう、馬車は 町の中を はしっていました。
Just as they grabbed two cans, the carriage was already back in town.
まじょが、いいました。「こりゃいかん。おまえさんの あいてが できるのは、五じまでだ。もうあと、三十ぷんも ありゃしない。」
The witch said, “This is bad. Your time is only until five o’clock. There are barely thirty minutes left.”
馬車を とめました。しらない 家の まえでした。
The carriage came to a stop. They were in front of an unfamiliar house.
「ばしょなんて、どこでもいい。さあ、ざいりょうを はこんだ、はこんだ。」
“It doesn’t matter where we are. Now, hurry up and carry in the ingredients.”
まじょは、かってに、家の中に 入っていきました。
Without hesitation, the witch walked right into the house.
ベルも ならさず、あいさつも しないのです。
She didn’t ring the doorbell or even greet anyone.
るすの ようでした。
It seemed like no one was home.
でも、なんて きれいなキッチンでしょう。
But what a beautiful kitchen it was!
なんて ひろいキッチンでしょう。
And how spacious it was!
なべも、ほうちょうも、ピカピカひかっています。
The pots and knives sparkled brightly.
こまったさんは、うっとりして しまいました。
Komatta-san was enchanted by the sight.
が、まじょが いいます。「なにを ぼんやりしている。さ、やさいを あらって。あらったら ジャガイモを ゆでる。それから ニンジンも。」
But the witch snapped at her. “What are you standing around for? Wash the vegetables! After that, boil the potatoes. Then the carrots, too.”
こまったさんは、「こまったわ。そんなに、一どに できない。」
Komatta-san hesitated. “Oh no… I can’t do all that at once.”
まじょは、かまわずに いいます。
The witch paid no attention and kept going.
「きゅうりを きざんで、それから、ハムも 入れようね。チーズも こまかく きって 入れたらいい。」
“Chop the cucumbers, then add the ham. You should also cut the cheese into small pieces.”
こまったさんは、あんまり あわてたので、あついジャガイモを つまんで、「あちっ！ やけどしちゃった。」
Komatta-san was in such a hurry that she grabbed a hot potato and yelped, “Ouch! I burned myself!”
がー、していないのです。すぐに なおって しまいました。
But strangely enough, the pain disappeared instantly.
まじょは、ほうきの 先を、こまったさんの あたまに のせて、うたうのです。
The witch placed the tip of her broom on Komatta-san’s head and started chanting:
あついものは さますこと さめてるものも ひやすこと
Hot things cool down, cold things chill even more
生の やさいは つめたい水に はなして やれば 生きかえる
Fresh vegetables come alive in cold water
ジャガイモと ニンジンが ひえました。
Suddenly, the potatoes and carrots cooled down.
こまかく きざんで、ハムとチーズを 入れ、かきまぜました。
Komatta-san chopped everything finely, added the ham and cheese, and mixed it all together.
サラダの コツは あえること やさしく てばやく だいたんに
The secret to salad is in the mixing—. Gently, quickly, boldly!
マヨネーズで あえましょう ドレッシングも おなじこと
Mix with mayonnaise, just like dressing!
まじょは、もってきた サラダオイルと すを 出しました。
The witch took out the salad oil and vinegar she had brought.
しおと こしょうは、キッチンに あるものを しつれい。
She borrowed some salt and pepper from the kitchen.
「これで、フレンチドレッシングが、できる。おまえさんは、手つきも いいし、センスが あるから、まかせておこう。まず、マスタードに よく しおを かきまぜ、それから、サラダオイルを すこしずつ、さいごに すの じゅんじょだ。」

まじょは、キッチンの とけいを 見ました。
The witch glanced at the kitchen clock.
五じ五ふんまえ でした。
It was five minutes to five.
「サラダを おいしく たべるには、きれいに かざりつけることだね。わぎりの ゆでたまご、レモン、パセリなんかを、うつくしく かざるのさ。それから、ハムや ベーコン、ソーセージなんかを たっぷり入れれば、これだけで りっぱな おかず。それに、カニやツナの かんづめも よし.....。ああ、もう、じかんが ない。さらば、さらば。」
“To make a salad look delicious, you have to decorate it beautifully. Arrange slices of boiled egg, lemon, and parsley nicely. Adding plenty of ham, bacon, or sausages will make it a full meal. Canned crab or tuna works too... Oh no, time’s up! Farewell, farewell!”
とけいが 五じを しらせたとき、こまったさんの まわりから、すべての ものが きえてしまいました。

こまったさんは、じぶんの おみせに、ぼんやり たっていました。
She found herself standing absentmindedly inside her own shop.
「こまったわ。そうじを したくても、ほうきがない。」
“Oh no… I wanted to clean up, but now my broom is gone.”
ほうきは、まじょが、もっていって しまったはずです。
The witch must have taken it with her.
が、それは ゆめでした。ほうきは、きちんと すみに 立てかけて あったのです。
But then she realized—it was all a dream. Her broom was still neatly propped up in the corner.
「よかった。」
“Thank goodness.”
それから こまったさんは、にっこり わらって いいました。
Then, Komatta-san smiled and said,
「きょうは、みんな サラダに しよう。マヨネーズだって、ドレッシングだって、みんな じぶんで つくっちゃう。まじょに おそわった サラダを、三つか 四つ、つくるんだ。」
“Tonight, everyone will have salad! I’ll make the mayonnaise and dressing from scratch. I’ll prepare three or four different salads, just like the witch taught me.”
そうじを して、かぎを かけて、こまったさんは、みせを 出ました。
After tidying up and locking the shop, Komatta-san stepped outside.
