こうさとびができた KOUSATOBIGA DEKITA

(I Did the Criss-Cross Jumps)

わたしは、年三に「をおく会」す。

At my school, we have a special event every March called “The Farewell Party for the Sixth Graders.”

おせわに かんしゃ気もを つたえるす。

It’s a time for us to show our appreciation to the sixth graders who have helped and looked after us.

で、よういしものを に す。

From first to fifth grade, each class prepares a performance as a gift.

は、ムなわとびを た。

The second graders were going to perform a rhythmic jump rope routine.

ムなわとびは、て、前とび、ろとび、かけ足とび、あやとび、こうさとび、の とびを 十六つ てとす。

In rhythmic jump rope, we jump in time with music: forward jumps, backward jumps, running jumps, cross jumps, and criss-cross jumps — each type of jump is done sixteen times in a set.

「六をおく会」で 一かた。

There was just one month left until the Farewell Party.

わたしは、前とび、ろとび、かけ足とび、あやとは、と とた。

I had gotten good at forward jumps, backward jumps, running jumps, and cross jumps.

もこうさとは、二、三回とと、て す。

But with the criss-cross jump, I could only do it two or three times before getting tangled.

わたしは、も れんしゅうた。

So, I decided to practice at home too.

で れんしゅうと、のななほが た。

One day, while I was practicing in front of my house, Nanaho, a fifth grader, happened to walk by.

て、「あっ、ん、『おくる会』のれんしゅう?」と、た。

She called out, “Oh, Nozomi! Are you practicing for the Farewell Party?”

「うん。こうさとびけ、てー。」

“Yeah... I just can’t get the criss-cross jump right.”

「じあ、る。ん。」

“Okay, let me watch. Try it once.”

わたしは、ななほさで とた。

I tried jumping in front of Nanaho.

「右か よ。」

“Only your right wrist is turning,” she said.

「おを かくなかんじに、をこうさん。」

“Try crossing your arms like you're covering your belly button.”

ななほは、に た。

Nanaho kindly taught me how to do it.

わたしは、に ら、なんども なんども れんしゅうた。

I practiced again and again, paying attention to everything she had told me.

「六をおくる会」た。

The day of the Farewell Party for the Sixth Graders finally arrived.

な にこにこと す。

Everyone was smiling and looked like they were having fun.

よ す。

Then it was the second graders’ turn.

がながて、ムなわとびが はじた。

The music started, and our rhythmic jump rope routine began.

前とび、ろとび、か足とび、あやとびと、に とた。

I got through the forward jumps, backward jumps, running jumps, and cross jumps without messing up.

つぎは、こうさとす。

Next was the criss-cross jump.

で れんしゅうを ら、にのて 十六回 とた。

I remembered everything I had practiced, and with the rhythm of the music, I did all sixteen criss-cross jumps without a mistake.

わたしは、「た。」と で さけた。

Inside, I shouted, “I did it!”

ムなわとびが おと、も なはくを た。

When our routine ended, every grade gave us big applause.

の えがおを て、わたしは うれた。

Seeing the smiles on the sixth graders’ faces made me really happy.
