こぐまの くんちゃんは あるあさ とても はやく おきました。
とっても うれしいことが あったのです。
「きょうから ぼく がっこうに いくんだ。」と くんちゃんは いいました。
「ぼく きょうから 一ねんせい なんだ。」
あさごはんが すむと、くんちゃんと おかあさんぐまは つれだって いえを でました。
みちみち くんちゃんは はなの みつを すっている みつばちを みつけました。
「ぼく がっこうへ いくんだよ。」
くんちゃんは みつばちに いいました。
「きみも がっこうへ いく？」
「いいえ、わたしは みつを あつめるのに いそがしくてね。」と みつばちは こたえました。
「ふうん。」と くんちゃんは いいました。
くんちゃんは おかあさんの あとを おいかけました。
すこし すると、きのうろに こうもりが いるのを みつけました。
「ぼく、がっこうへ いくんだよ。」と くんちゃんは こうもりに いいました。
「きみも がっこうへ いく？」
「いいや、わたしは よるじゅう えものを さがしていたのでね。これから ねむるところさ。」と こうもりは いいました。
「ふうん。」と くんちゃんは いいました。
くんちゃんは また おかあさんの あとを おいかけました。
ところが しばらくいくと、ビーバーが いるのを みつけました。
「ぼく、がっこうへ いくんだよ。きみも がっこうへ いく？」
「わたしゃ ダムづくりに いそがしいんだよ。」と ビーバーは いいました。
「ふうん。」と くんちゃんは いいました。
くんちゃんは スキップを しながら おかあさんの あとを ついていきました。
そして、スキップに あわせて くんちゃんは うたいました。
「いそがしい みつばちに、いそがしい こうもり。ビーバーも いそがしい。くんちゃんだって いそがしい。」
くんちゃんと おかあさんは がっこうへ やってきました。
くんちゃんは おかあさんにも いっしょに いてほしいと おもいました。
けれども せんせいは くんちゃんだけを つれて、きょうしつに はいりました。
そして、スージーと ハリエットの うしろの せきに すわらせました。
おかあさんは かえって いって しまいました。
くんちゃんは ぐるっと まわりを みまわたしました。
たくさんの こどもたちが います。
いとこの アレックが やってきました。
アレックは はなを もってきて、せんせいに あげました。
アレックは 二ねんせいです。
一じかんめが はじまりました。
せんせいは じょうきゅうせいを さして、まえに でてきて きょうかしょを よむようにと いいました。
くんちゃんは じぶんが さされると こまるなと おもいました。
くんちゃんは じが よめません。
くんちゃんは いすの うえで なるべく ちいさくなりました。
つぎに せんせいは べつの せいとを さして、じを かかせました。
くんちゃんは じが かけません。
くんちゃんは いすの うえで、さっきよりも もっと ちいさくなりました。
こんどは せんせいは また べつの せいとを さして、こくばんに さんすうの けいさんを やらせました。
くんちゃんは けいさんが できません。
くんちゃんは いすの うえで、もっと もっと ちいさくなりました。
せんせいは おおきい せいとに こくばんを けさせると、きょうしつの まえに いすを 三つ ならべさせました。
くんちゃんは いりぐちの ほうを みました。
とは まだ あいています。
せんせいは くんちゃんと スージーと ハリエットの ほうを みました。
「スージー、ハリエット、くんちゃん。でてきて このいすに おかけなさい。」
三びきの くまのこたちは たちあがり、ゆっくり せんせいの ほうへ あるいて いきました。
スージーが いちばん まえで つぎが ハリエット、さいごが くんちゃんでした。
くんちゃんの あしが だんだん のろくなりました。
くんちゃんは あいている とを みていました。
との まえまで きたとき、とつぜん くんちゃんの あしが はやく なりました。
そして あいている とぐちから さっと そとへ とびだして しまいました。
ハリエットと スージーは まえの いすに すわりました。
せんせいは こくばんい ”ハリエット” と かきました。
「あなたの なまえは ハリエット。おなじ ”は” で はじまる ことばを しっていますか？」
くんちゃんは まどから のぞいてみました。
ハリエットは したを むいています。
「はな。」ハリエットは やっと そういいました。
せんせいは ”はな” と こくばんに かきました。
「ぼくも しってる。」と くんちゃんは こころの なかで、おもいました。
「はちみつ。」
つぎに せんせいは ”スージー” と かきました。
そして ききました。
「スージー、あなたの なまえと おなじ ”す” で はじまる ことばを しっていますか？」
「すみれ。」と スージーが こたえました。
”すみれ” と せんせいが こくばんに かきました。
「ぼくも しってる。」と くんちゃんは おもいました。
「スープ。」
それから せんせいは こくばんに ”くんちゃん” と かきました。
「ぼくの なまえだ！」と くんちゃんは おもいました。
「だれか くんちゃんの ”く” で はじまる ことばを しっていますか？」
くんちゃんは おもいっきり せのびを すると まどの そとから さけびました。
「くま、くるみ、くまんばち！」
せんせいは にっこり わらって いいました。
「はいって いらっしゃい、くんちゃん。この いすに おかけなさい。あなたの すわる ばしょは ここですよ。」
そこで くんちゃんは きょうしつに はいりました。
くんちゃんは もう しんぱい していませんでした。
こんな べんきょうなら くんちゃんにも できます。
せんせいは くんちゃんと スージーと ハリエットに 一まいずつ かみを わたして いいました。
「じぶんの なまえと おなじ おとで はじまる ものの えを かきなさい。」
三びきは じぶんたちの せきに もどると、いっしょうけんめい かきました。
せんせいが まわって きたとき、くんちゃんが いちばん たくさん かいていました。
「とても よくできましたね、くんちゃん。」と せんせいは いいました。
がっこうが おわると、くんちゃんは じぶんの かいた えを うちへ もってかえって、おとうさんと おかあさんに みせました。
つぎの あさ、くんちゃんは とっても はやく おきました。
にわに でて、ひまわりを うでいっぱい つむと、くんちゃんは いいました。
「これ、がっこうへ もっていって せんせいに あげるんだ。」
### Kunchan's First Day of School
One morning, little bear Kunchan woke up very early.
There was something very exciting happening.
“Today, I’m going to school,” Kunchan said.
“I’m starting first grade today.”
After breakfast, Kunchan and Mama Bear left the house together.
Along the way, Kunchan spotted a bee collecting nectar from flowers.
“I’m going to school,” Kunchan said to the bee.
“Are you going to school too?”
“No, I’m too busy gathering nectar,” replied the bee.
“I see,” said Kunchan.
Kunchan followed his mother.
A little later, he spotted a bat in a hollow tree.
“I’m going to school,” Kunchan said to the bat.
“Are you going to school too?”
“No, I’ve been hunting all night. Now it’s time for me to sleep,” said the bat.
“I see,” said Kunchan.
Kunchan followed his mother again.
Soon, they came across a beaver.
“I’m going to school. Are you going too?” Kunchan asked.
“I’m too busy building a dam,” said the beaver.
“I see,” said Kunchan.
Kunchan skipped along, following his mother.
And as he skipped, Kunchan sang.
“Busy bee, busy bat. The beaver is busy too. Kunchan is also busy.”
Kunchan and his mother arrived at the school.
Kunchan wanted his mother to stay with him.
But the teacher took Kunchan alone into the classroom.
He was seated behind Susie and Harriet.
Mama Bear went back home.
Kunchan looked around.
There were many children.
His cousin Alec came over.
Alec brought a flower for the teacher.
Alec was in the second grade.
The first lesson began.
The teacher called on an older student to read from the textbook.
Kunchan hoped he wouldn’t be called on.
Kunchan couldn’t read yet.
He tried to make himself as small as possible in his seat.
Next, the teacher called on another student to write on the board.
Kunchan couldn’t write yet.
He made himself even smaller in his seat.
Then the teacher called on another student to solve a math problem on the board.
Kunchan couldn’t do math yet.
He made himself even smaller in his seat.
The teacher had an older student clean the board and set up three chairs at the front of the classroom.
Kunchan looked towards the door.
It was still open.
The teacher looked at Kunchan, Susie, and Harriet.
“Susie, Harriet, Kunchan. Come sit on these chairs.”
The three little bears stood up and slowly walked towards the teacher.
Susie went first, then Harriet, and Kunchan was last.
Kunchan’s steps slowed down as he reached the door.
Suddenly, he sped up and dashed out the open door.
Harriet and Susie sat on the front chairs.
The teacher wrote “Harriet” on the board.
“Your name is Harriet. Can you think of a word that starts with the same sound as your name?”
Kunchan peeked in through the window.
Harriet looked down.
“Flower,” Harriet finally said.
The teacher wrote “flower” on the board.
“I know one too,” Kunchan thought to himself.
“Honey.”
Next, the teacher wrote “Susie” on the board.
“Susie, can you think of a word that starts with the same sound as your name?”
“Violet,” Susie answered.
The teacher wrote “violet” on the board.
“I know one too,” Kunchan thought.
“Soup.”
Then the teacher wrote “Kunchan” on the board.
“That’s my name!” Kunchan thought.
“Does anyone know a word that starts with the same sound as Kunchan’s name?”
Kunchan stretched up as tall as he could and shouted through the window.
“Bear, walnut, bumblebee!”
The teacher smiled.
“Come in, Kunchan. Sit on this chair. This is where you belong.”
Kunchan went into the classroom.
He wasn’t worried anymore.
He could handle this kind of lesson.
The teacher gave Kunchan, Susie, and Harriet each a piece of paper.
“Draw pictures of things that start with the same sound as your name.”
The three little bears returned to their seats and worked hard on their drawings.
When the teacher came around, Kunchan had drawn the most pictures.
“Very well done, Kunchan,” the teacher said.
After school, Kunchan took his drawing home to show his father and mother.
The next morning, Kunchan woke up very early again.
He went into the garden, picked a bunch of sunflowers, and said,
“I’m going to take these to school and give them to the teacher.”
