(The Best Friends in the Forest)
もりで いちばん おおきな クマさんは ちいさな ものが すきでした。
In the forest, the biggest bear loved small things.
もりで いちばん ちいさな ヤマネくんは おおきな ものが すきでした。
And the smallest dormouse loved big things.
だから ふたりが はじめて であったとき 「ヤマネくん ちいさくって かわいいなぁ」と クマさんは おもいました。
So, when they first met, the bear thought, “Dormouse, you’re so small and cute.”
「クマさん おおきくって かっこいいなぁ」と ヤマネくんは おもいました。
And the dormouse thought, “Bear, you’re so big and cool.”
ふたりは すぐに もりで いちばんの なかよしに なりました。
They quickly became the best of friends in the forest.
あるひ クマさんと ヤマネくんが もりの なかを さんぽしていると 「くんくん。あっちのほうから いい においがしてくるよ」と ヤマネくんが いいました。
One day, as Bear and Dormouse were strolling through the woods, Dormouse sniffed the air. “Sniff, sniff. Something smells really good from over there!” he said.
「くんくん。あまくて おいしそうな においだねぇ」クマさんが いいました。
“Sniff, sniff. It’s a sweet and delicious smell,” Bear agreed.
ふたりは においに つれられて しらない こみちを あるいていきました。
Drawn by the scent, the two followed an unfamiliar path.
すると れんがづくりの おみせが みえてきました。
Soon, they spotted a small brick building.
「わぁ！ もりの ケーキやさん だって！ ぼく ケーキ だいすき」と ふたり いっしょに こえをあげました。
“Wow! It’s a cake shop in the forest! I love cake!” they exclaimed together.
それから かおを みあわせて 「おなじだね」と わらいました。
They looked at each other and laughed. “We’re the same!”
ふたりは もりのケーキやさんに はいりました。
Excited, they stepped into the forest cake shop.
「いらっしゃいませ」と ブルドッグの てんちょうさんが いいました。
“Welcome!” greeted the bulldog shopkeeper.
ケースの なかには おいしそうな やきたての ケーキが いっぱい ならんでいます。
Inside the glass case, freshly baked cakes were lined up.

“What should we get?”
クマさんと ヤマネくんは ケーキを えらびました。
Bear and Dormouse carefully chose their cakes.
クマさんは だいすきな はちみつを たっぷり つかった はちみつモンブランを たのみました。
Bear picked a Honey Mont Blanc, filled with his favorite honey.
ヤマネくんは くだものを たっぷり つかった ３だんデコレーションケーキを たのみました。
Dormouse chose a three-layer decorated cake, packed with fruit.
「うえに のってる チョコの はなと ミツバチは すぐ たべちゃ もったいないなぁ」クマさんは ケーキの かざりを そっと おさらの はしに よけました。
“The chocolate flower and the little chocolate bee on top… they’re too pretty to eat right away,” Bear murmured, gently setting the decorations aside.
それから ケーキを ひとくち たべました。
Then, he took a small bite of cake.
コーヒーを ひとくち のみました。
A sip of coffee.
ゆっくり あじわいながら ちょっとずつ たべています。
Slowly savoring each bite, he ate bit by bit.
「まるで ケーキの おしろみたいだ」ヤマネくんは いいました。
“This feels like eating a castle made of cake!” Dormouse said.
ケーキのうえを あるきながら さくらんぼや すいかを たべました。
He walked across his cake, nibbling on cherries and watermelon pieces.
それから ケーキに トンネルを ほって うちがわから たべています。
Then, he dug a tunnel into the cake and ate from the inside.
ケーキは どんどん なくなっていきます。
Piece by piece, the cake disappeared.
「おいしかったね！」クマさんと ヤマネくんは ケーキを きれいに たいらげました。
“That was delicious!” Bear and Dormouse finished their cakes completely.
すると ブルドッグの てんちょうさんが いいました。
Just then, the bulldog shopkeeper spoke up.
「きょう ケーキを たべた かたには プレゼントが あるんですよ」
“As a special treat for today’s customers, we have a gift for you.”
プレゼントは はなの なえでした。
It was a flower seedling.
「きっと かわいいはなが さくよ」クマさんは そういって いちばん ちいさな うえきばちを えらびました。
“These will bloom into beautiful flowers,” Bear said, picking the smallest pot.
「きっと すごいのが さくよ」ヤマネくんは いちばん おおきな うえきばちを えらびました。
“They’ll grow into something amazing!” Dormouse said, choosing the largest pot.
それから.....
Then.....
ふたりは さっそく いえの まえを たがやして なえを うえました。
Back home, they eagerly tilled the soil and planted their seedlings.
クマさんは ちいさな はなばたけ。
Bear made a small flower garden.
ヤマネくんは おおきな はなばたけ。
Dormouse made a big flower garden.
ふたりは まいにち みずを やったり ざっそうを ぬいたりして わくわくしながら そだてました。
Every day, they watered the plants, pulled weeds, and excitedly watched them grow.
やがて.....
Soon.....
ヤマネくんの はなばたけに きれいなはなが いっぱい さきました。
Dormouse’s flower garden was filled with beautiful blossoms.
「やあ こんな ところに はなばたけが あるよ」
“Wow! There’s a flower garden here!”
モンシロチョウさんが うれしそうに とんできました。
A cabbage white butterfly fluttered over, delighted.
「ヤマネくん ごちそうさま」ミツバチさんが はなに あたまを つっこんで みつを のんでいます。
“Dormouse, thank you for the feast,” said a honeybee, dipping its head into the flowers to sip nectar.
「おーい！ あっちのほうが すごいよ！」
“Hey! That garden over there is even more amazing!”
ハナムグリさんが そういって クマさんの はなばたけの ほうへ ブーンと とびさっていきました。
A flower beetle buzzed past, heading toward Bear’s flower garden.
クマさんの はなばたけは ヤマネくんの はなばたけより ずっとたくさんの はなを つけていました。
Bear’s flower garden had grown even more flowers than Dormouse’s.
「ぼくの はたけ ジャングルみたいに なっちゃった！」クマさんが こまったように いいました。
“My garden has turned into a jungle!” Bear said, puzzled.
「いいなぁ.....クマさんの はたけ.....」ヤマネくんが いいました。
“I wish mine looked like yours…” Dormouse sighed.
「ぼくは ヤマネくんの はたけの ほうが かわいくて すきだな」クマさんが いいました。
“I think your garden is cute. I like it more,” Bear said.
「ぼくは クマさんのほうが うらやましいや」ヤマネくんが いいました。
“But I envy yours,” Dormouse admitted.
「じゃあ とりかっこ する？」クマさんが ヤマネくんに ききました。
“Want to trade?” Bear asked.
でも ヤマネくんは 「いいんだ。ぼくの はたけも いっしょうけんめい そだててみるよ」
But Dormouse shook his head. “No, it’s okay. I’ll keep taking care of mine the best I can.”
そういうと じぶんの はなばたけに かえっていきました。
With that, he returned to his own flower garden.
ひが くれても ヤマネくんは じぶんの はなばたけに みずをやって いっしょうけんめい せわを していました。
Even as the sun set, Dormouse carefully watered his plants and tended to them with care.
はなの きせつが おわると クマさんの はなばたけには おおきな みが なりました。
When the flower season ended, something surprising happened in Bear’s garden. Huge fruits had grown among the flowers.
「りっぱな かぼちゃだね！」あそびに きた カエルさんが いいました。
“These pumpkins are amazing!” said a visiting frog.
「おいしそう！」アナグマくんが いいました。
“They look delicious!” said a badger.
「いちばん おおきいのを ヤマネくんに プレゼントしよう」クマさんは そういうと もいだ かぼちゃを せおって ヤマネくんの はなばたけの ほうへ あるきだしました。
“I’ll give the biggest one to Dormouse as a gift!” Bear decided, hoisting the pumpkin onto his back and heading to Dormouse’s garden.
「ヤマネくんは どうしているかな？」
“I wonder how Dormouse’s garden is doing?”
ところが.....
But…
ヤマネくんの はなばたけは すっかり かれてしまって いました。
Dormouse’s garden had completely withered.
ヤマネくんは がっかりしています。
Dormouse looked disappointed.
そのとき つちのなかから こえがしました。
Then, a voice came from underground.
「やぁ ヤマネくん。すごいの そだててるね！」
“Hey, Dormouse! You’ve grown something incredible!”
かおを だしたのは モグラくんです。
A mole popped out of the soil.
「すごいのは クマさんの はたけだよ。ぼくのは かれちゃった.....」ヤマネくんが いいました。
“No, Bear’s garden is the amazing one… Mine just dried up,” Dormouse sighed.
「つちの うえはね。でも つちのなかは すごいことに なってるよ」モグラくんが いいました。
“Above the ground, maybe. But below? Something special is happening!” the mole said.
ヤマネくんは びっくりして つちを ほりました。
Dormouse gasped and dug into the soil.
すると.....
And there…
つちの なかには さつまいもが どっさり みのっていました。
A huge pile of sweet potatoes was buried beneath the dirt!
みんな おおよろこび。
Everyone cheered.
それから みんなで さつまいもを ほりました。
Together, they harvested the sweet potatoes.
クマさんの はたけも ヤマネくんの はたけも だいしゅうかくです。
Both Bear’s garden and Dormouse’s garden had a bountiful harvest.
「こんなに いっぱいの さつまいもと かぼちゃ ぼくらだけじゃ たべきれないね」クマさんが いいました。
“There’s no way we can eat all these sweet potatoes and pumpkins by ourselves,” Bear said.
「もりの みんなを しょうたいして パーティーを しよう！」ヤマネくんが いいました。
“Let’s invite everyone and have a party!” Dormouse suggested.
ふたりは さっそく こんな しょうたいじょうを かきました。
Right away, they wrote an invitation:

やきいも Roasted Sweet Potatoes
やきカボチャ Baked Pumpkin
カボチャのプリン Pumpkin Pudding

しょうたいされた みんなが やってきました。
Everyone in the forest came.
「おいしいね！」
“This is so good!”
みんなで たべた かぼちゃと さつまいもは あきの あじが しました。
The pumpkins and sweet potatoes they shared tasted just like autumn.
