(What’s Beyond the Forest?)
あらいぐまの リトル・ラクーンは、木の 上から かおを だして、あたりを ながめました。
Little Raccoon peered out from the top of a tree, gazing at the surroundings.
みえるものは もりの 木ばかり。
All he could see were trees of the forest.
どっちを みても もりの みどり。
Every direction he looked, all he saw was the green of the forest.
リトル・ラクーンは こしを おろして かんがえました。
Little Raccoon sat down to think.
「おかあさん、もりには おわりが あるのかなあ？どこまで いっても、やっぱり もり？それとも、どこかで おわる？」
"Mom, does the forest ever end? No matter how far you go, is it still just the forest? Or does it stop somewhere?"
「もりに だって おわりは ありますよ。」と、おかあさんは いいました。
"Even the forest has an end," said his mother.
「おがわの そばを とおって、あかい みが なる やを こえると、くさはらが あってね、そこに わかい カシの 木が たってるの。そこで、もりは おわりですよ。」
"If you pass by the creek, cross the bushes with the red berries, you’ll find a grassy field. There stands a young oak tree. That’s where the forest ends."
「それじゃあ、もりが おわると、なにが あるの？」と、リトル・ラクーンは ききました。
"And after the forest ends, what’s there?" asked Little Raccoon.
「ひろい せかい！」おかあさんは いいました。
"A big world!" his mother replied.
リトル・ラクーンは、おどろいて いいました。
Little Raccoon, surprised, asked,
「そこは どんな ところ？」
"What’s it like there?"
「ひとくちでは いえないわねえ。」と、おかあさんは いいました。
"I can’t describe it in just a few words," said his mother.
「さあ、さあ、そとで あそんで いらっしゃい。」
"Now, now, go play outside."
リトル・ラクーンは、げんきよく そとに でました。
Little Raccoon cheerfully went outside.
でも、あそぼうとは していませんでした。
But he wasn’t in the mood to play.
こしを おろして かんがえ はじめたのです。
He sat down and began thinking.
スカンクおばさんが 二ひきの スカンクぼうやを つれて やってきました。
Skunk Auntie came by with her two little skunks.
リトル・ラクーンは、かけよりました。
Little Raccoon ran over.
「おばさん、ひろい せかいって どんな ところ？」
"Auntie, what’s the big world like?"
スカンクおばさんは いいました。
Skunk Auntie said,
「おがわの そばを とおって、あかい みが なる やぶを こえると、くさはらが あってね、そこに わかい カシの 木が たってるわ。その むこうの ことを ききたいのね？」
"If you pass by the creek, cross the bushes with the red berries, you’ll find a grassy field. There stands a young oak tree. You’re asking about what’s beyond that, right?"
「そうです！そうです！」リトル・ラクーンくんは うれしくなりました。
"Yes! Yes!" Little Raccoon felt excited.
ところが スカンクおばさんは、「ひとくちでは いえないねえ。」と こたえると、リトル・ラクーンの おかあさんの ところへ いってしまいました。
But then Skunk Auntie replied, "I can’t describe it in just a few words," and went off to chat with Little Raccoon’s mother.
二ひきの スカンクぼうやは、あそびに きたのでした。
The two little skunks had come to play.
でも リトル・ラクーンには、かんがえごとが あるのです。
But Little Raccoon had something on his mind.
そこで スカンクぼうやたちも、いっしょに こしを おろして かんがえました。
So, the little skunks sat down with him and started thinking too.
「おがわまで いこう。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Let’s go to the creek," said Little Raccoon.
「そうすれば、ざりがにが とれるし、大きな いわがある。いわの 上なら ひろい せかいだって みえるかもしれないぞ！」
"We might catch some crayfish, and there’s a big rock. From on top of the rock, we might even see the big world!"
「それ、いい かんがえ！」と、二ひきの スカンクぼうやが うれしそうに いいました。
"That’s a great idea!" said the two little skunks happily.
「ぼくたちも いく。かえるが とりたい！」
"We’ll go too! We want to catch frogs!"
リトル・ラクーンは、二ひきの スカンクぼうやを みて いいました。
Little Raccoon looked at the two little skunks and said,
「じゃ、ついて おいで。でも、ぼくから はなれちゃ いけないよ。そして、ぼくの いうことを よく きくんだよ。」
"Alright, follow me. But don’t wander off. And listen to what I say."
三びきは おがわに むかいました。
The three of them headed toward the creek.
スカンクの きょうだいは、はなれないで ついてきました。
The skunk siblings followed closely behind.
リトル・ラクーンは ざりがにを さがしました。
Little Raccoon searched for crayfish.
スカンクぼうやたちは かえるを さがしました。
The little skunks searched for frogs.
かえるに とびついて ごつんこ しました。
They tried to pounce on a frog but bumped into each other.
そのすきに、かえるは にげてしまいました。
In the confusion, the frog escaped.
リトル・ラクーンは うまく ざりがにを つかまえました。
Meanwhile, Little Raccoon successfully caught a crayfish.
それから 大きい いわの 上に のぼって みました。
Then he climbed up the big rock.
でも、ひろい せかいは みえません。
But he couldn’t see the big world.
「あかい みが なる やぶまで いってみよう。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Let’s go to the bushes with the red berries," said Little Raccoon.
「そうすれば、あかい みが たべられるし、やぶの 上に あがれば、ひろい せかいが みえるかも しれない。」
"We can eat the berries, and if we climb on top of the bushes, we might see the big world."
「きのみ だーいすき！」と、二ひきの スカンクぼうやが いいました。
"I love berries!" said the two little skunks.
「じゃ、ついて おいで。でも、ぼくから はなれちゃ いけないよ。そして、ぼくの いうことを よく きくんだよ。」
"Alright, follow me. But don’t wander off. And listen to what I say."
三びきは、あかい みが なる やぶに むかいました。

The three of them happily picked and ate the ripe red berries.
これを ひとつ、こんどは これ、こんどは こっち。
This one, then that one, and then another one.
それから、リトル・ラクーンは、こんもりと 大きい やぶの 上に のって みました。
After that, Little Raccoon climbed on top of the big bushes.
でも、ひろい せかいは みえません。
But he still couldn’t see the big world.
「くさはらまで いってみよう。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Let’s go to the grassy field," said Little Raccoon.
「そうすれば、かぶとむしや かたつむりが つかまえられる。それに、わかい カシの 木にも のぼれるから、ひろい せかいが みえるかも しれない。」
"We might catch beetles and snails. And if we climb the young oak tree, we might see the big world."
「かぶとむしと かたつむり だーいすき！」と、二ひきの スカンクぼうやが うれしそうに いいました。
"I love beetles and snails!" said the two little skunks excitedly.
「じゃ、ついて おいで。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Alright, follow me," said Little Raccoon.
三びきは、くさはらまで いってみました。
The three of them went to the grassy field.
いた いた いた いた。
There were, there were, there were, there were
いろいろな むしが あっちにも こっちにも。
There were lots and lots of bugs everywhere.
どっさり とって たべました。
They caught a bunch and ate them.
それから リトル・ラクーンは わかい カシの 木の てっぺんに のぼりました。
Then Little Raccoon climbed to the top of the young oak tree.
こんどこそ みえました。
This time, he saw it.
「あれだ！」と、リトル・ラクーンが さけびました。
"There it is!" Little Raccoon shouted.
「あれが、きっと ひろい せかいだぞ！」
"That’s got to be the big world!"
「それ、なんなの？どんなもの？」と、スカンクぼうやたちが ききました。
"What is it? What’s it like?" asked the little skunks.
「それを これから たしかめに いくんだよ。」と、リトル・ラクーンが いいました。
"We’re going to find out now," said Little Raccoon.
「わあ、つれてって つれてって。」と、二ひきの スカンクぼうやが せがみました。
"Take us! Take us!" the two little skunks begged.
でも、こんどだけは リトル・ラクーンも だめと いいました。
But this time, Little Raccoon said no.
「ふたりとも 小さいから だめ。ここで まってなさい。もどって きたら はなして あげるから。」
"You two are too little. Wait here. I’ll tell you all about it when I get back."
リトル・ラクーンは、もりの はずれまで くさはらを かけていきました。
Little Raccoon dashed across the grassy field to the edge of the forest.
「これは なんだろう？」
"What is this?"
リトル・ラクーンは たちどまって かきねを ながめました。
Little Raccoon stopped and stared at the fence.
それから、するりと くぐりぬけました。
Then he slipped through it.
「これは なんだろう？もりの おがわを またいでる あの木みたいだな。だから、わたるものかも しれないな。」
"What is this? It’s like the tree that spans across the creek, so maybe it’s something to cross."
リトル・ラクーンが わたろうとすると、ばたん！
When Little Raccoon tried to cross it—bam!
かけもどると、ばたん！
He ran back—bam!
リトル・ラクーンは あわてて とびおりました。
Little Raccoon quickly jumped off.
おがわを またいでいる あの木とは、ぜんぜん ちがうものでした。
It was nothing like the tree that spans across the creek.
こんどは、いい においが ながれてきました。
Next, a nice smell drifted by.
おいしいものを みんな いっしょに したような すてきな におい！
A delicious smell that seemed to contain every tasty thing!
くんくん ここだな。
Sniff, sniff—it’s here.
リトル・ラクーンが のぞきこむと、わあ、おいしそうなものが いっぱい！
When Little Raccoon peeked inside—wow! So many delicious things!
なかでも いちばん おいしそうなのは、これ。
The most delicious-looking one was this.
でも、ちょっと たべづらいなあ、ほんとうに。
But it was a little tricky to eat, really.
リトル・ラクーンは、二ひきの スカンクぼうやの ところへ はしって もどりました。
Little Raccoon ran back to the little skunks.
そして、ばたん、ばたんと あがったり さがったり するものと、いい においが して、たべても たべても おわらない ながーい ものの ことを おしえて やりました。
He told them about the thing that went up and down with a bang and the long, delicious thing that never seemed to end.
「ここから うごいちゃ だめだよ。」と、リトル・ラクーンは いいました。
"Don’t move from here," said Little Raccoon.
「ぼくが もどって きて、もっと いろいろ おしえて あげるからね。」
"I’ll come back and tell you more."
リトル・ラクーンは、また もりの はずれまで くさはらを かけていきました。
ittle Raccoon ran back to the edge of the forest again.
「これは なんだろう？これは 木だ。まちがいない。でも、ずいぶん 大きな はっぱだなあ！それに ずいぶん のぼりにくいや。」
"What is this? It’s a tree. No doubt about it. But its leaves are huge! And it’s so hard to climb."
リトル・ラクーンは、かきねに かきよりました。
Little Raccoon approached the fence.
かきねに のぼって、それから 木に とびうつりました。
He climbed the fence, then jumped onto the tree.
すると、あ、あ、まわる まわる！
But oh! It spun and spun!
リトル・ラクーンは おりたく なりました。
Little Raccoon wanted to get down.
そこで、ぴょんと とぶと、あらら、大きな 一まいの はっぱの なかに すぽり。
So, he hopped off, only to land smack in a giant leaf.
それでも ようやく 木から おりるとー
Eventually, he managed to get down from the tree—
二ひきの スカンクぼうやの ところへ かけもどって、ひろい せかいの 木の ことを はなして やりました。
Little Raccoon ran back to the little skunks to tell them about the spinning tree in the big world.
「あそこの 木には、とっても 大きな はっぱが ついてるんだ。そして、いいかい！木が ぐるぐる まわるんだぜ。」
"The trees there have huge leaves. And listen, the tree spins around and around!"
「ぼくたち、ここに じっとしてる。」と、二ひきの スカンクぼうやが あわてて いいました。
"We’ll just stay here," said the two little skunks, startled.
「だから、ときどき もどってきて はなしを きかせてね。」
"So, come back and tell us stories now and then."
リトル・ラクーンは、また、もりの はずれまで くさはらを かけていって、もういちど かきねの なかに かけこんで あたりを みまわしました。
Little Raccoon ran back to the edge of the forest again and slipped through the fence once more.
「これは なんだろう？この 下には なにが あるのかな？」
"What is this? What’s underneath?"
リトル・ラクーンは、するすると なかに はいってみました。
Little Raccoon slid inside.
もちあげると、あくものが あったので、リトル・ラクーンは あけてみました。
He lifted something and found it opened, so he went in.
のぼれる ものが あったので、それにも のぼって みました。
He climbed something inside as well.
ほそい ものが ぶらさがって いたので ひっぱると、ざーっ！と、みずが ふってきました。
There was something hanging, so when he pulled it—swoosh!—water came pouring down!
つめたい みずでした。
The water was cold.
みずは あたたかく なって、それから あつーく なりました。
Then it became warm, and then—hot!
「わっ、あつい！」
"Wow, hot!"
リトル・ラクーンは、あわてて そとに とびだしました。
Little Raccoon quickly jumped outside.
そして、いちもくさんに、スカンクぼうやの ところまで かけもどりました。
Then he ran straight back to the little skunks.
「ああ、おどろいた！」リトル・ラクーンは 大きなこえで いいました。
"Oh, what a surprise!" Little Raccoon said in a loud voice.
「ひろい せかいには、あめが しまって あるよ！ぼくが、その あめを ふらせたらね、おどろくじゃないか！あつーい あめなんだ！」
"In the big world, they have rain stored away! I made that rain fall, and guess what? It’s hot rain!"
「あつい あめだって！」二ひきの スカンクぼうやは びっくりして さけびました。
"Hot rain!" The two little skunks shouted in shock.
「ぼくたち、おうちへ かえりたい！」
"We want to go home!"
リトル・ラクーンも そう おもいました。
Little Raccoon felt the same.
おかあさんに はなして あげたいことが、もう やまほど あるんです。
He had so many things he wanted to tell his mother.
「かえろう！」リトル・ラクーンは、きっぱりと いいました。
"Let’s go home!" Little Raccoon said firmly.
三びきは、くさはらを かけもどりました。
The three of them ran back across the grassy field.
小さな むし 一ぴき つかまえようとも しませんでした。
They didn’t even try to catch a single bug.
あかい みの なる やぶを かけぬけました。
They ran through the bushes with the red berries.
あかく うれた みを とろうとも しませんでした。
They didn’t stop to pick the ripe berries.
おがわの そばも はしって とおりすぎました。ざりがにも かえるも わすれて いました。
They ran by the creek, forgetting all about the crayfish and frogs.
はしりに はしって、リトル・ラクーンの いえまで、もどりました。
They ran and ran until they got back to Little Raccoon’s home.
スカンクおばさんは、まだ リトル・ラクーンの おかあさんと はなしを していました。
Skunk Auntie was still talking with Little Raccoon’s mother.
「すごいんだ、すごいんだ！」二ひきの スカンクぼうやが、いきを はずませて いいました。
"It was amazing, it was amazing!" The two little skunks, out of breath, exclaimed.
「ぼくたち、くさはらまで いったんだよ。そしてね、リトル・ラクーンなんか ひろい せかいを みにいったんだ！」
"We went all the way to the grassy field! And guess what? Little Raccoon went to see the big world!"
「ひろい せかいですって！」スカンクおばさんが いいました。「まあ、おどろいた！」
"The big world?" said Skunk Auntie. "Oh my, how surprising!"
「ほんとうに いったの？」と、リトル・ラクーンの おかあさんが いいました。「それで、どんな ところ だった、リトル・ラクーン？」
"Did you really go?" asked Little Raccoon’s mother. "So, what was it like, Little Raccoon?"
どんな ところかって？
What was it like?
リトル・ラクーンは かんがえました。
Little Raccoon thought.
わたろうとすると、ばたん、ばたんするものが あって、たべても、たべても おわらない ながーい ものが あって、ぐるぐる まわる 木が あって、あつーい あめが ふる ところが あって、
There was something that went bang, bang when you tried to cross it, a long thing you could eat but never finish, a spinning tree, and a place where hot rain falls.
