(New Year's Is Coming Soon)

"Hello! I came to play."

Shinji had come to visit his grandparents' house.

It was only about a five-minute walk from his own home.

Grandpa said,

"Ah, Shin-chan. So your winter break has started, huh?"

"Yeah. What are you two doing?"

This time, Grandma answered.

"New Year's is coming soon, right? So we're doing a big cleaning."

"Hmm," Shinji said, looking a little bored.

"Stop doing that and come play with me instead."

"No, no," Grandma replied, still wiping the window glass without stopping.
"At the end of the year, we clean the house so we can welcome the New Year feeling fresh."

Grandpa was standing on a step stool, wiping high places with a cloth.

"This is boring."

Shinji lay down and started watching TV.

Just then, Grandpa, who was standing on the stool, suddenly wobbled.

"Hey, that’s dangerous! You should just stop!" Shinji said as he sat up. At that moment, he saw his classmate Megumi walking by outside the window—with her grandmother.

Maybe they were coming back from shopping.

Both of them were carrying shopping bags in their hands, chatting as they walked.

He could hear Megumi say, "Grandma, that looks heavy. I’ll carry that for you too."

Shinji stared at Megumi, then suddenly jumped up and ran over to Grandpa.

"I’ll hold the stool for you! And I’ll wash Grandma’s cloth, too!"

Both Grandpa and Grandma smiled.

"Thank you."

"Looks like we’ll have a wonderful New Year."

Warm winter sunlight streamed in through the polished window glass.
