ねぇ、キティ おしえてよ
一わの がちょうが、むらのとおりで おんどりに であいました。
「ガア、ガア、ガア！ こんにちわ。ごきげんいかが？」と、がちょうが いいました。
「コケコッコー！ ごきげんさあ。あさから ずぅっと たねを つっついて いたんだからね」と、おんどりは いいました。
おんどりは、こかげの へいの うえに とびのると、はねを バタバタ させながら、コーッ、コーッと、なきました。
「わたしだって、あさから ずうっと くさを たべてたんだから」と、がちょうは いいました。
がちょうは、へいぎわの あおいくさの うえに いって、あたまを つばさの したに つっこみ、かたあしで やすみました。
「ねえ、がちょうさん、ぼくの となりに あがっておいでよ」と、おんどりが いいました。
「へいに とまるなんて、ばかげてるわ。わたし、おちるのは ごめんですからね。くさの うえのほうが、ずうっと いいわよ」と、がちょうが いいました。
「そんなことないよ！ へいのうえのほうが ずうっと いいよ！ コーコーコッ！」おんどりは わめきました。
「いいえ！ くさのうえのほうが いいに きまってるわ！ガーガーガー！」がちょうが いいました。
どちらも まけていません。
「ガーガーガー！」 「コーコーコッ！」
「ガーガーガー！」 「コーコーコッ！」
いつまでたっても きまりません。
そのとき、ふたりは、からすが 一わ とんでいるのに きがつきました。
からすは、ゆっくりと わを かいてから、一ぽんの せのたかい かばの きの てっぺんに まいおりました。
「ねえ、からすさん、おしえてよ。どっちが いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと くさちでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりが ききました。
「カアカアカア！ いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ。たかい たかい きの うえよ」と、からすは いいました。
がちょうと おんどりが、とおりを くだって いくと、一ぴきの ぶたが、ぶたごやの わきの ぬかるみのなかから はなを つきだして いました。
「ねえ、ぶたさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと くさちと たかい たかいきでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
「ブーブーブー！」ぶたは はなを ならしました。
「いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ。きもちのいい、つめたい ぬかるみさ」
がちょうと おんどりは、のはらに でました。
すると、あしもとの じめんが、もくもく もりあがって きました。
もぐらが つちを おしあげながら、トンネルを ほっていたのです。
「ねえ、もぐらさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと、くさちと、たかい たかいきと、きもちのいい つめたい ぬかるみでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
「いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ。トンネルさ」と、もぐらは こたえました。
がちょうと おんどりが、もりに やってくると、一ぴきの りすが、きから きへと、とびはねていました。
「ねえ、りすさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと、くさちと、たかい たかいきと、ぬかるみと、トンネルでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
りすは、きのあなに すべりこむと、いいました。
「いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ。きのあなよ」
がちょうと おんどりは、あるきつづけて、おがわに やってきました。
かわの なかには、こいが 一ぴき いました。こいは、あしの あいだで じっと していました。
ときたま、まあるい めだまと ひれが、ちらっと うごくだけです。
「ねえ、こいさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと、くさちと、たかい たかいきと、ぬかるみと、トンネルと、りすのあなでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
「いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ。しずかな おがわさ」と、こいは いいました。
がちょうと おんどりは、どんどん あるきつづけました。
すると、一ぴきの かぶとむしが、きのみを よじのぼって いくのが めに とまりました。
「ねえ、かぶとむしさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと、くさちと、たかい たかいきと、ぬかるみと、トンネルと、りすのあなと、しずかな おがわでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
「いちばん いい ばしょは、ここ」かぶとむしは、そういうと、きのかわの したに もぐりこんで しまいました。
がちょうと おんどりは、もう くたくた だったので、ひきかえす ことに しました。
ふたりが いえの そばの にわまで もどってくると、キティが ハンモックで ねていました。
「ねえ、キティさん、おしえてよ。どこが いちばん いい ばしょ？ へいの うえと、くさちと、たかい たかいきと、ぬかるみと、トンネルと、りすのあなと、しずかな おがわと、きのかわの したの かぶとむしの ねぐらでは？」と、がちょうと おんどりは ききました。
ところが、キティは、ぐっすり ねむって いたので、なんにも いいませんでした。
おんどりは、へいのうえの おきまりの ばしょに とびのり、がちょうは あおい くさの うえに こしを おちつけました。
ふたりは、キティが めを さまして、どこが いちばん いい ばしょか おしえてくれるまで まつことにしました。
いまか いまかと まつうちに、とうとう ふたりとも、まぶたが くっついて きてしまいました。
そうして いま、みんなは、まだ ねむっています
おんどりは へいのうえで、
がちょうは くさのなかで、
キティは ハンモックで、
それから、ほかの みんなも、やっぱり ねむっています
からすは えだで、ぶたは ぬかるみで
もぐらは トンネルで、りすは あなで、
こいは おがわで、かぶたむしは きのかわの したの まっくらな かくれがで。

A goose met a rooster in the village street.
"Quack, quack, quack! Hello. How are you?" said the goose.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo! I'm fine. I've been pecking at seeds since morning," said the rooster.
The rooster jumped onto a fence in the shade and, flapping its wings, crowed, "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
"I've been eating grass since morning too," said the goose.
The goose went to the green grass by the fence, stuck its head under its wing, and rested on one leg.
"Hey, Goose, why don't you come up here beside me?" said the rooster.
"Perching on a fence is silly. I don't want to fall off. It's much better on the grass," said the goose.
"That's not true! The fence is much better! Cock-a-doodle-doo!" the rooster shouted.
"No! The grass is definitely better! Quack, quack, quack!" the goose replied.
Neither would give in.
"Quack, quack, quack!" "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
"Quack, quack, quack!" "Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
They couldn't settle the argument.
At that moment, they noticed a crow flying by.
The crow circled slowly and then landed on the top of a tall birch tree.
"Hey, Crow, tell us. Which place is better? The fence or the grass?" the goose and the rooster asked.
"Caw, caw, caw! The best place is here, at the top of a tall tree," said the crow.
As the goose and the rooster walked down the street, they saw a pig sticking its nose out of the mud next to the pigsty.
"Hey, Pig, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, or the tall tree?" the goose and the rooster asked.
"Oink, oink, oink!" snorted the pig.
"The best place is here, in the cool, comfortable mud."
The goose and the rooster walked out into the field.
Suddenly, the ground under their feet began to rise.
A mole was digging a tunnel, pushing the soil up.
"Hey, Mole, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, the tall tree, or the cool mud?" the goose and the rooster asked.
"The best place is here, in the tunnel," the mole answered.
The goose and the rooster came to the forest and saw a squirrel jumping from tree to tree.
"Hey, Squirrel, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, the tall tree, the cool mud, or the tunnel?" the goose and the rooster asked.
The squirrel slipped into a hole in a tree and said,
"The best place is here, in the tree hole."
The goose and the rooster kept walking and reached a stream.
In the stream, there was a carp. The carp stayed still, moving only its round eyes and fins occasionally.
"Hey, Carp, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, the tall tree, the cool mud, the tunnel, or the tree hole?" the goose and the rooster asked.
"The best place is here, in the quiet stream," said the carp.
The goose and the rooster kept walking.
Then they saw a beetle climbing up a tree trunk.
"Hey, Beetle, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, the tall tree, the cool mud, the tunnel, the tree hole, or the quiet stream?" the goose and the rooster asked.
"The best place is here," the beetle said and crawled under the tree bark.
The goose and the rooster were exhausted and decided to head back.
When they reached the yard near their home, Kitty was sleeping in a hammock.
"Hey, Kitty, tell us. Which is the best place? The fence, the grass, the tall tree, the cool mud, the tunnel, the tree hole, the quiet stream, or the beetle's hiding place under the tree bark?" the goose and the rooster asked.
But Kitty was sound asleep and didn't answer.
The rooster jumped to its usual spot on the fence, and the goose settled on the green grass.
They decided to wait for Kitty to wake up and tell them which place is the best.
As they waited, both of them grew sleepy and their eyelids drooped.
Now, everyone is still sleeping.
The rooster on the fence,
The goose in the grass,
Kitty in the hammock,
And everyone else too.
The crow on the branch, the pig in the mud,
The mole in the tunnel, the squirrel in the hole,
The carp in the stream, and the beetle in its dark hiding place under the tree bark.
