(Japanese Rice, Rice Around the World)
「いただきまあす。」
“Itadakimasu!”
きょうのお昼ごはんには、大きなおにぎりが出ました。
Today for lunch, we had big rice balls.
「お米がつやつやで、おいしい！」
“The rice is so shiny and delicious!”
わたしは、思わず 大きな声で 言いました。
I couldn’t help but say it out loud.
「お米って、日本でできた 食べものだよね。」と言うと、お母さんが、
When I said, “Rice is a food that comes from Japan, right?”, my mom responded,
「あら、お米は、大むかしに ほかの国から つたわってきたんだよ。」と言いました。
“Actually, rice was brought to Japan a long, long time ago from other countries.”
わたしがびっくりしていると、おとうさんが、教えてくれました。
I was surprised, and then my dad explained further.
「お米は、いろいろな国で 食べられているんだよ。」
“Rice is eaten in many countries around the world.”
「えっ、それなら、ほかの国でも、おにぎりを 作るのかな。」
“Huh? Then do people in other countries make rice balls too?”
「どうだろうね。日本のお米とは、しゅるいが ちがうものも あるんだ。きっと、ほかの国には、その国の お米の食べ方が あるんだと思うよ。」
“I’m not sure. The kinds of rice are different from Japan’s, you know. I think each country has its own way of eating rice.”
そう聞いて、わたしは、ほかの国では どうやって お米を食べているのか、知りたくなりました。
Hearing that made me curious about how people in other countries eat rice.
そこで、お昼ごはんの後、本でしらべてみました。
So, after lunch, I looked it up in a book.
「お米の食べ方は、いろいろあるんだな。いったい どんなあじなんだろう。」
“Wow, there are so many different ways to eat rice. I wonder what they all taste like.”
わたしは、せかいの お米をつかった りょうりを、食べてみたくなりました。
Now, I really want to try rice dishes from around the world.
