(The Two Birds)
みそさざいは、やまがらの うちへ いこうか、うぐいすの うちへ いこうか、まよって いました。
The wren was deciding whether to go to the titmouse's house or the bush warbler's house.
きょうは、やまがらの おたんじょうびです。
Today was the titmouse’s birthday.
おいわいを するから きて くださいと、ことりたちは、みんな よばれて いたのです。
All the little birds had been invited to come and celebrate.
でも、きょうは、うぐいすの うちで、おんがくかいの れんしゅうを する ひです。
But today was also the day for music practice at the bush warbler’s house.
「どう しようかな、」
“What should I do?” thought the wren.
やまがらの うちは、やまおくの さびしい ところに あります。
The titmouse’s house was in a lonely spot deep in the mountains.
うぐいすの うちは、きれいな うめの さく、はやしの なかに あります。
The bush warbler’s house was in a beautiful forest full of blooming plum trees.
ことりたちは みんな、うぐいすの うちへ とんで いって しまいました。
All the little birds flew off to the bush warbler’s house.
みそさざいも、とうとう そちらへ とんで いきました。
Eventually, the wren also flew over there.
うぐいすの うちでは、みんなが たのしそうに うたを うたって いました。
At the bush warbler's house, everyone was happily singing songs.
「こっちに きて、よかったね。」
“It was a good idea to come here,” someone said.
「うん。ごちそうも おいしいしね。」
“Yes, and the food is delicious too,” agreed another.
でも、みそさざいは、ちっとも たのしく ありません。
But the wren wasn’t having any fun at all.
「やまがらさんは、どう して いるだろう。」
“I wonder how the titmouse is doing,” the wren thought.
みそさざいは、こっそり うぐいすの うちから ぬけだすと、やまがらの うちへ とんで いきました。
Quietly, the wren slipped away from the bush warbler’s house and flew to the titmouse’s house.
きて みると、やまがらは、一わで しょんぼり していました。
When the wren arrived, the titmouse was sitting all alone, looking sad.
「やまがらさん、おいわいに きましたよ。」
“Titmouse, I’ve come to celebrate your birthday,” said the wren.
やまがらは、びっくり したように はねを ばたばた させました。
The titmouse flapped its wings in surprise.
「よく きて くれましたね。きょうは、だれも きて くれないと おもって いたのに。」
“I’m so glad you came! I thought no one would come to see me today,”
そう いって、ちいさな めに なみだを うかべました。
said the titmouse, tears welling up in its small eyes.
それを みて、みそさざいは、「きて よかったな。」と、おもいました。
Seeing this, the wren felt, “I’m glad I came.”
そして、二わの ことりは、おたんじょうびの おいわいを したのでした。
And so, the two little birds celebrated the birthday together.
