ODEKONO ASE

(Sweat on My Forehead)

Today is the “Big Clean-Up Operation” day in the town where Atsushi lives.

Together with his family and local community members, he’s supposed to pick up trash on the way to school.

Atsushi, dragging his feet, thought, “Ugh, and on my day off, too.”

While he was slowly getting ready, his dad said, “Atsushi, come on, let’s go,” and headed out first, carrying work gloves and a garbage bag.

Atsushi hurried after him.

His dad had already started picking up trash and fallen leaves.

The man next door was sweeping leaves into a dustpan with a broom.

Atsushi quietly watched as his dad carefully picked up even the smallest bits of litter.

“Good morning, Atsushi!”

A friend from his class was also picking up trash with a serious expression.

So Atsushi joined in and began picking up trash and leaves with all his effort.

After a while, a woman from the neighborhood said, “Everyone’s working so hard from early in the morning. Thank you!”

When Atsushi looked back, the sidewalk behind them was now much cleaner than before.

“All right, just a little more to school. Let’s keep going,” he said to himself and started picking up trash again.

When they arrived at school and combined all the garbage everyone had collected, the trash bag was completely full.

Looking around, Atsushi saw everyone smiling, sweat glistening on their foreheads.

Wiping his own forehead, Atsushi smiled and thought, “It feels good to see everything clean.”

The end
