(The Princess Goes to School)
おてんきの いい 日でした。
It was a beautiful, sunny day.
おひめさまは、スキップしながら、ともだちを さがしに いきました。
The princess skipped along, looking for friends.
むこうから、おそろいの ふくを きた 子どもたちが やってきました。
From the other side, a group of children wearing matching outfits approached.
「ねえ、あなたたち、どこへ いくの？ おそろいの ふくなんか きちゃって。」おひめさまは たずねました。
"Hey, where are you all going? And why are you all dressed the same?" the princess asked.
子どもたちは あきれました。
The children looked at her in disbelief.
「がっこうだよ。子どもは みんな、がっこうへ いって、べんきょうするのが きまりだもの。」
"We're going to school. All kids have to go to school and study. It's the rule."
「まあ、たいへん。」おひめさまは、おしろに とんでかえりました。
"Oh no!" The princess hurried back to her castle.
王さまは いつもの ように にわで 虫とりあみを ふりまわしています。
The king, as usual, was swinging a bug net in the garden.
「ねえ、おとうさん、あたし、がっこうに いかなくっちゃ。」
"Dad, I have to go to school!"
「ああ、いっといで。」王さまは うわの そらで こたえると、カメノコアゲハを おいかけて いきました。
"Alright, go ahead," the king absentmindedly replied, chasing after a butterfly.
そこへ、女王さまが とおりかかりました。
Just then, the queen passed by.
「おかあさん、がっこうに いくには、どうすれば いいの？」
"Mom, how do I go to school?"
女王さまは、まじまじと、おひめさまを みつめました。
The queen stared at the princess.
「いやだ、うっかりしてたわ。あなたを がっこうに いれなくては。」
"Oh dear, I completely forgot! We need to send you to school."
この女王さまは、いつでも うんどうに むちゅうです。うんどうと いっても、ピンポンや なわとびを するのでは ありません。”ラーメンを、おやつに たべるのは やめましょう”うんどうから、”はみがきは、じゃ口の 水を とめてから”うんどうまで、いろいろな ことを たくさんの ひとに ひろめるんです。
This queen was always busy with "movements"—not exercise, but campaigns like "No Ramen for Snacks" or "Turn Off the Tap While Brushing Your Teeth."
「ふんふん、こんしゅうは、”子どもを がっこうに いれるのを わすれずに”うんどうに するわ。」
"Hmm, this week’s campaign will be 'Don’t Forget to Send Kids to School'!"
女王さまは、さっそく 王さまの ところに いきました。
The queen rushed to the king.
「あなた、うちの ひめように がっこうを かってくださいましよ。ひとつで いいんですから。」
"Dear, please buy a school for our little princess. Just one will be enough."
「すきに せい。」王さまは 虫めがねで カメノコアゲハを みながら いいました。
"Do as you like," the king muttered, still focused on his butterfly.
女王さまは、がっこうを まるごと ひとつ かいました。
And so, the queen bought an entire school.
がっこうは、みずうみの まんなかの 小さな しまに ありました。
The school was on a small island in the middle of a lake.
しまの まんなかには、大きな やしの木が ありました。
A large palm tree stood at its center.
「なかなか、いい がっこうだわ。やしの木がっこうって、なまえに しましょう。」女王さまは いいました。
"This is quite a nice school. Let’s call it Palm Tree School," the queen decided.
おひめさまは、がっこうで ごはんを たべて、がっこうで ねて、がっこうで べんきょうする ことに なりました。
The princess would eat, sleep, and study at school.
やしの木がっこうの せいとは、おひめさま ひとりだけでした。
She was the only student at Palm Tree School.
せんせいは、たくさん いました。ただ、どの せんせいも おばあさんでした。
There were plenty of teachers—but they were all elderly ladies.
おひめさまを みるなり、ひとりの せんせいが、いいました。
As soon as the princess arrived, one of the teachers frowned.
「まあ、おひめさま。その かみのけの くるくるは なんですか？」
"My, my, Princess! What is this curly hair?"
「ああ、これ。あたし、くせっけなの。」
"Oh, this? I have naturally wavy hair," the princess replied.
「おひめさま。」
"Princess."
おばあさんの せんせいは、こわい かおを しました。
The old teacher's face turned serious.
「この がっこうでは、てんねんパーマは きんしです。」
"In this school, natural perms are not allowed."
しかたがないので、おひめさまは、かみのけを ひゃっぺん ひっぱりました。
The princess had no choice but to pull her hair straight a hundred times.
（でも、しばらく たつと、かみのけは、また くるんと、うずを まいて しまいましたけど。）
(But after a while, her hair curled back as usual.)
ふつかめ、おひめさまは かぜひきぎみでした。
On the second day, the princess felt like she was catching a cold.
たてつづけに、五かい、くしゃみを しました。
She sneezed five times in a row.
「ああ、おひめさま。」と、きのうより、もっと おばあさんの せんせいが いいました。
"Oh dear, Princess," said the teacher, looking even sterner than the day before.
「くしゃみは、まとめて 三かい いじょう なさっては いけません。げひんです。」
"Sneezing more than three times in a row is improper."
みっかめ、おひめさまは、手を あげて しつもんしました。
On the third day, the princess raised her hand to ask a question.
「せんせい、どうして ごはんは 一日に 三かいって、きまってるんですか？」
"Teacher, why do we have to eat three meals a day?"
おとといも、きのうよりも、もっと おばあさんの せんせいが いいました。
The elderly teachers gasped.
「おひめさま、せんせいが こたえられない ことを しつもんしては いけません。
しつれいです。」
"Princess, you must not ask questions the teachers cannot answer. That is rude."
よっかめも、いつかめも、むいかめも、おひめさまは しかられました。
On the fourth, fifth, and sixth days, the princess was scolded again and again.
せんせいは、みんな おばあさんです。そのせいか、きゅうしょくも、おかゆとか おとうふとか、やわらかい ものばかり。
Since all the teachers were elderly, the school lunches consisted of soft foods like porridge and tofu.
おやつは、いつも みかんぜゼリーでした。
The only snack was mandarin orange jelly.
おひめさまは、かたやきせんべいを ばりんと かみたく なりました。
The princess longed for a crunchy rice cracker.
くるくるの かみのけを、もっと くるくるに したくなりました。
She wanted to let her curls curl even more.
まとめて 五十かい くしゃみが したくなりました。
She wanted to sneeze fifty times in a row.
つまり、おひめさまは、がっこうが きらいに なったんです。
In short, the princess started hating school.
で、おひめさまは きめました。
So she made a decision.
「なんとかして、がっこうから にげださなくっちゃ。」
"I must escape from school!"
まえに、おひめさまは 空を とんだことが ありました。ふくらしこを のんで ふうせんに なって、おしろの へいを こえました。
She had flown through the air once before—by drinking fizzy soda and turning into a balloon.
「こんども ふうせん さくせんで いこうかしら？」
"Maybe I should try the balloon trick again?"
でも、この がっこうには、ふくらしこは ありませんでした。
But this school had no fizzy soda.
おひめさまは、うらめしそうに みずうみを ながめました。
She gazed at the lake.
ボートは ひと月に いっぺいしか、しまに きません。
A boat only came to the island once a month.
水の うえは あるいて いけません。
She couldn’t walk on water.
およいで にげだすには、ちょっと とおすぎます。きっと、とちゅうで くるしくなって しまうでしょう。
Swimming across would be too far—she’d get exhausted midway.
「むこうぎしまで、とんでいくしかないわね。」
"I have to fly to the other side!"
おひめさまは、空を みあげました。
The princess looked up at the sky.
ねこの サムが いっしょだったら、いいのにと、おもいました。
She wished her cat, Sam, were here.
サムも、いま、ねこの がっこうへ いっています。つめの とぎかたとか、ただしい のどの ならしかたとかを ならっている はずです。
Sam was currently attending cat school, learning how to sharpen his claws and purr properly.
こうくう パチンコびんで、てがみを くれると いっていたのに、まだ とどきません。
He had promised to send her a letter via slingshot mail, but it hadn’t arrived yet.
「パチンコの ぐあいでも わるいのかしら？」
"Maybe the slingshot isn't working?"
おひめさまは、サムの パチンコを おもいうかべました。あおい ゴムの ついた おてせいの パチンコです。
She imagined Sam’s slingshot—a homemade one with a blue rubber band.
「なんでも とばせますよ。」いつも サムは じまんしていました。
"I can shoot anything!" he always boasted.
てがみだって、ビーだまだって、石ころだって、おなべのふただって.....。
Letters, marbles, pebbles, even pot lids...
「それに、おひめさまだって！」おひめさまは さけびました。
"Even the princess!" the princess suddenly shouted.
ビーだまの かわりに おひめさまが とんでいけば いいんです。そうしたら、この がっこうとも はい、さようなら。
If she replaced the marble with herself, she could shoot herself off the island!
おひめさまは 大きな とくせいの パチンコを こしらえました。
So, she built a giant slingshot, tying together many rubber bands.
わゴムを たくさん つないで ながく しました。そして、ゴムを 手にもって、しまの はんたいがわまで はしりました。ゴムが ぴんぴんに のびたとき、おひめさまは 手を はなしました。
She stretched the rubber tight, ran to the other side of the island, and let go.
ぴゅ～ん。
WHOOSH!
おひめさまは、いい音を たてて とんでいきました。
The princess soared through the sky.
空中で カラスに あいました。
She even met a crow mid-air.
「こんにちは。」おひめさまは きげんよく いいました。
"Hello!" she cheerfully greeted it.
でも これが しっぱいでした。
But that was her mistake.
よそみを した しゅんかん、おひめさまは、やしの木に ひっかかって しまったんです。
In the moment she looked away, she got caught in a palm tree.
つぎの日、おひめさまは、一日じゅう、ろうかに 立たされて しまいました。
The next day, she had to stand in the hallway all day as punishment.
「ま、きょうしつで しかられているよりは、ましだわ。」
"Well, it’s better than getting scolded in the classroom," she thought.
おひめさまは、がっこうから にげだすほうほうを じっくり かんがえました。
And she carefully planned her next escape.
おもいつきました。水まきホースです。
She had an idea—watering hoses!
ホースを みじかく きって、口に くわえれば いいんです。そのまんま、みずうみを もぐって いけば いいんです。もちろん、ホースの さきっぽは、水の うえに だしておいて。
If she cut a short piece and held it in her mouth, she could breathe while diving underwater. She would swim all the way to shore!
おひめさまは そっと ろうかを ぬけだしました。水まき ホースを きってきました。およぎやすいように、はだかんぼに なりました。
She snuck out, cut a watering hose, and took off her clothes to swim easier.
それから、ホースを くわえて、ゆっくり 水の なかに もぐりました。サムに おそわった、ねこかきで すすみます。
She held the hose in her mouth and dove into the water, swimming using the cat-paddle technique Sam had taught her.
「もう、はんぶんくらいは きたかしら？」
"I must be halfway there!"
おひめさまが きを よくしたときです。きゅうに、空が くらくなりました。あやしげな かぜが ふいてきました。
Just as she felt confident, the sky darkened, and a strange wind blew.
かぜは、どんどん つよくなって、やしの木が ぐらぐら ゆれました。
The wind grew stronger, shaking the palm tree.
まるまるした やしのみも、いっしょに ゆれました。やしのみは、やしの木に しがみつきました。
A round coconut clung to the tree.
でも、むだでした。ぐいっと、木が ゆれた ひょうしに やしのみは、ぽーんと とんでー ホースの さきっぽに ちゃっかり こしかけて しまったのです。
But then, with one final shake—plop!—it fell right onto the end of her hose!
くうきが 口のなかに はいってこなくなりました。
Air stopped flowing.
ごほっ、ごほっ。おひめさまは むせました。
The princess choked.
くるしく なりました。しかたなく 水のうえに かおを だしました。
She gasped and had no choice but to surface.
どうやら、こんども しっぱいの ようでした。
Another failed escape.
おひめさまが、がっこうに はいってから、二しゅうかん たちました。
Two weeks had passed since she entered school.
このごろ おひめさまは あまり しかられなく なりました。
Lately, she wasn’t scolded as much.
なるべく、しゃべらないように しているからです。
Because she tried to talk as little as possible.
しつもんは しません。
No more questions.
ないしょばなしも しません。（これは、まあ、したくても、あいてが いなかったからですが。）
No more whispering. (Though, to be fair, she had no one to whisper to.)
せんせいが いねむりを すると、おひめさまも いねむりを します。
When the teachers dozed off, she dozed off too.
「せんせい、じゅぎょうちゅうですよ。」なんて、ぜったい いいません。
She never scolded them for sleeping during lessons.
けれど、おひめさまは、がっこうが すきに なったわけでは ありません。
But that didn’t mean she started liking school.
はんたいです。よぼうちゅうしゃより、はいしゃさんより、きらいに なりました。
On the contrary—she hated it more than vaccinations and dentist visits combined.
ですから、おひめさまは、いつも かんがえていました。
So, she kept thinking.
「どうやったら、がっこうから にげだせるかしら。」って。
"How can I escape from school?"
とんでいくのも だめ。
Flying didn’t work.
もぐっていくのも だめ。
Diving didn’t work.
こうなったら、あるいて いくだけです。
Now, she had to walk on water.
おひめさまは、おふろばで、おゆの うえを あるく れんしゅうを してみました。
She practiced walking on bathwater.
でも、おしりを うって、おふろの おゆを のんでしまいました。
But she slipped, fell, and swallowed bathwater.
「こりゃ、だめだ。」
"This won’t work."
なんとか、水の うえを すいすい あるけないもんでしょうか。
Somehow, there must be a way to walk smoothly over water.
おひめさまは、へやの まどから、みずうみを ながめました。
The princess gazed out at the lake from her room window.
みずうみは ひかって いました。
The lake sparkled.
なみ ひとつなく、すべすべ してみえます。
There wasn’t a single wave, and its surface looked smooth.
すんだ 水に きらきら おひさまが あたります。
The clear water shimmered under the sunlight.
まるで 大きな あおりんごの ゼリーに、おさとうを ふりかけた みたいです。
It looked just like a giant blue apple jelly sprinkled with sugar.
「みずうみの ゼリーなら、たべても いいな。」
"If it were lake jelly, I wouldn’t mind eating it."
まい日、まい日、みかんゼリーを たべさせられて、うんざり していたんです。
She was completely tired of eating mandarin orange jelly every single day.
この しまでは、ありんこだって、みかんゼリーには、みむきも しません。
Even the ants on this island didn’t pay any attention to mandarin orange jelly.
しらんふりで ゼリーのうえを あるいていきます。
They simply ignored it and walked right over it.
「そうだ、わかったわ！」おひめさまは とびあがりました。
“That’s it! I figured it out!” The princess jumped up.
「みずうみごと、ゼリーに しちゃえば いいんだわ！」
“I just have to turn the entire lake into jelly!”
そうしたら とことこ あるけます。
Then, she could walk across it with ease.
いままで おもいつかなかったのが ふしぎな くらいです。
It was almost strange she hadn’t thought of it sooner.
だって、がっこうの ものおきには、ゼリーの もとが うんとこさ あるんですから。
After all, the school’s storage was packed with jelly mix.
おひめさまは、ものおきへ とんでいきました。
The princess rushed to the storage room.
ゼリーの もと ひゃくまんこぶんを はこびだしました。
She carried out enough jelly mix for a million servings.
せっせこ、せっせこ。
Diligently, tirelessly.
おひめさまは、みずうみに、ゼリーのもとを まぜました。
The princess poured the jelly mix into the lake.
みずうみは、だんだん みかんいろに なってきました。
Gradually, the water turned a mandarin orange color.
あまずっぱい、みかんの においも してきます。
A sweet and sour mandarin scent filled the air.
おひめさまは、ひとさしゆびを みずうみに とっこんで みました。
She dipped her fingertip into the lake.
まだ、かたまっていません。
It hadn’t solidified yet.
うまい ぐあいに せんせいたちは、へやに こもりっきりです。
Luckily, the teachers were all shut away in their rooms.
どうやら、かいぎが ながびいている ようすです。
It seemed their meeting was running long.
おひめさまは、サムに そくたつを だすことに しました。
The princess decided to send an express message to Sam.
「大すきな ねこの サムへ がっこうは はちっとも おもしろく ありません。これから にげだします。おさじを 二ほん もって みずうみの きしで まっていて ください。おひめさまより」
"To my beloved cat Sam, School is not fun at all. I'm escaping now. Please wait for me at the lake shore with two spoons. From the Princess."
おひめさまは、てがみを まるめました。
She rolled up the letter.
とくせいの パチンコで サムの がっこうを めがけて とばしました。
Then, using her special slingshot, she launched it toward Sam’s school.
さあ、これで じゅんび かんりょうです。
Now, everything was ready.
みずうみゼリーも かたまりました。
The lake jelly had solidified.
おひめさまは くつを ぬいで はだしに なりました。
The princess took off her shoes and went barefoot.
水のうえに みぎあしを のせました。
She placed her right foot onto the water.
ねんのため、みぎあしが しずまないうちに、ひだりあしを だしました。
Just in case, she quickly stepped forward with her left foot before the right could sink.
でも、そんな しんぱいは むようでした。
But there was no need to worry.
おひめさまの りょうあしは、しっかり みずうみの うえに のっていました。
Both of her feet were firmly on the surface of the lake.
「さようなら がっこう さようなら せんせい みんな まとめて おちゃのこ バイバイ。」
“Goodbye, school! Goodbye, teachers! Bye-bye to all of you!”
おひめさまは、はなうたを うたいながら、すすんでいきました。
Humming a little tune, the princess walked forward.
みずうみゼリーは ひやりしています。
The lake jelly felt cool.
あるくたびに あしの したで ぺくんと へっこみます。
With every step, it wobbled slightly beneath her feet.
おひめさまは うきうきしてきました。
She felt more and more excited.
そのときです。
Just then—
「お、おひめさま、おもどりください。」ひとりの せんせいが さけびました。
“O-oh, Princess, please come back!” one of the teachers shouted.
「あら、たいへん、いそがなくっちゃ。」おひめさまは かけだしました。
“Oh no, I’d better hurry!” The princess started running.
「まあ、みずうみが ゼリーに なっていますよ。」べつの せんせいが いいました。
“My goodness, the lake has turned into jelly!” another teacher exclaimed.
せんせいたちは いそいで うわばきを そとばきに かえました。
The teachers quickly switched from their indoor shoes to their outdoor shoes.
つぎつぎ おひめさまを おいかけ はじめました。
One after another, they began chasing after the princess.
ところが、せんせいたちの くつは、かかとの たかい ハイヒールです。
However, the teachers were all wearing high-heeled shoes.
ぶすっ、ぶすっ。
Squelch, squelch.
あるくたびに ゼリーの なかに かかとが うまります。
With every step, their heels sank into the jelly.
あっというまに そこらじゅうが あなだらけに なってしまいました。
In no time, the entire area was full of holes.
そして、あなの なかから じわーっと、ゼリーの おつゆが しみでて きました。
From these holes, jelly juice began oozing out.
そうなんです。
That’s right.
みずうみは まだ うえの ほうしか かたまって いなかったんです。
The lake had only solidified on the surface.
「わ、わたし しんでいくみたい.....。」せんとうの せんせいが いいました。
“I-I feel like I’m sinking…” said the teacher in front.
「あら、あたくしも。」二ばんめの せんせいも いいました。
“Oh dear, me too,” said the second teacher.
おひめさまが ふりむいたとき、せんせいたちは くびまで ゼリーに つかっていました。
When the princess turned around, the teachers were already submerged up to their necks in jelly.
「わあ、つぶつぶいり みかんゼリーに なっちゃったわ。」おひめさまは つぶやきました。
“Wow, they’ve turned into mandarin jelly with fruit bits!” the princess murmured.
ぺくん ぺくん やりながら、むこうぎしに むかいました。
She continued hopping and wobbling toward the other shore.
「おひめさま、ここですよ。」ねこの サムが おさじを ふっています。
“Princess, over here!” Sam the cat waved a spoon.
「ああ、サム。やっと、ついたわ。」おひめさまは きしに あがりました。
“Oh, Sam! I finally made it.” The princess climbed onto the shore.
「おなかが ぺこぺこよ。さあ、みずうみゼリーを たべましょう。」
“I’m starving. Let’s eat some lake jelly!”
おひめさまと サムは、おさじで ゼリーを すくいました。
The princess and Sam scooped up the jelly with their spoons.
ゼリーは みかんと みずうみの あじが しました。
It tasted like mandarin oranges and the lake.
「サムの がっこうは たのしかった？」
“How was your school, Sam?”
サムは くびを よこに ふりました。
Sam shook his head.
「このよから、がっこうが なくなっちゃえば いいのにね。もう こりごりよ。」おひめさまは ゼリーを ぱくんと たべました。
“I wish schools would disappear from the world. I’ve had enough.” The princess popped another spoonful of jelly into her mouth.
それから、きゅうに げんきな 声で いいました。
Then, suddenly, in a cheerful voice, she said:
「そうだわ。だれか、がっこうを たべちゃって くれるひと、いないかしら？」
“That’s it! Is there someone out there who would eat up the school for us?”
さあ、みなさんは、どう おもいます？
