(The Princess Goes Shopping)

とても　あつい　日でした。

It was a very hot day.

おひめさまと、ねこの　サムは、はらっぱの　木の　したで、おやつの　アイスキャンデーを　たべていました。

The princess and her cat, Sam, were sitting under a tree in the meadow, enjoying their ice pops.

「あー、おいしかった。」おひめさまは、ていねいに、ぼうを　なめました。

"Ah, that was delicious," said the princess, carefully licking the wooden stick.

すると、ぼうの　うえに、じが　みえてきました。

Then, letters began to appear on the stick.

「まあ、サム。あたりって　かいてあるわ。」

"Look, Sam! It says 'Winner'!"

「きっと、もう　一ぽん、アイスキャンデーが　もらえるんですよ。」

"That means you probably get another ice pop!"

「それじゃ、ふたりで　はんぶんこ　しましょ。」

"Then let’s share it together!"

おひめさまと　サムは、さっそく　アイスキャンデーやさんに　かけつけました。

Excited, the princess and Sam hurried over to the ice pop stand.

「これ、あたりです。」おひめさまは、ぼうを　みせました。

"Look! I won!" The princess showed the stick.

「おめでとうさん。はい、おかいものけん。」アイスキャンデーやの　おじさんは、かみきれを、一まい　くれました。

"Congratulations! Here you go, a shopping voucher," said the ice pop seller, handing her a small piece of paper.

「あら、アイスキャンデーが　いただけるんじゃないの？」おひめさまは、がっかりして　いいました。

"Oh? I thought I’d get another ice pop..." The princess looked disappointed.

おじさんは、にっこりして　こたえました。「この　おかいものけんで、デパートの　したから　うえまで、おかいものが　できるんだよ。」

The seller smiled. "With this shopping voucher, you can shop from the basement all the way to the rooftop of the department store."

「ちかから　おくじょうまで　ぜーんぶ？」

"From the basement to the rooftop? The whole thing?"

「もちろんだとも。」

"Of course!"

だったら、おかいものけんの　ほうが、いいに　きまってます。

Well then, the shopping voucher was definitely better!

「そうだわ。おとうさんと　おかあさんに、ほしいものを　かってあげようっと」

"That’s it! I’ll use it to buy something nice for Mom and Dad!"

おしろに　もどると、おひめさまは、王さまに　ききました。「おとうさん、なんか　ほしいもの　ある？」

Back at the castle, the princess asked the king, "Dad, is there anything you want?"

王さまは、すぐに　いいました。「そりゃ、虫とりあみじゃよ。おおいけやじるしのな。ポテトアゲハを　つかまえたいんじゃ。」

Without hesitation, the king replied, "A butterfly net! From 'Oikeya'! I want to catch a Potato Swallowtail butterfly!"

おひめさまは、メモちょうに　『おおいけやじるしの　虫とりあみ　ひとつ』と、かきました。

The princess jotted it down in her notebook: One butterfly net from Oikeya.

女王さまは、ちょうど、「おでかけは　ほどほどにして、わがやを　あかるく」うんどうで、おでかけちゅうでした。

As for the queen, she was out promoting her campaign: "Go Out in Moderation and Brighten Your Home!" 

この　女王さまは、じぶんが　いいと　おもうことを、くにじゅうの　ひとに　ひろめる　うんどうを　しているのです。

She often encouraged people in the kingdom to adopt habits she believed in.

「じゃ、おかあさんには、でんきスタンドに　しとくわ。」

"Then, I’ll get Mom a desk lamp!"

「そうですね。」サムも　さんせいです。

"Good idea," agreed Sam.

そこで、おひめさまは、おかいものけんと、おかいもの　メモを　もって、デパートに　でかけました。

With the shopping voucher and her list in hand, the princess set off for the department store.

デパートは、大きなとおりの、大きなえきの　まんまえに　ありました。

The store was located right in front of the big station on a bustling street. 

大きな　たてものの、大きな　いりぐちをみて、おひめさまは、くちを　あんぐり　あけました。

When the princess saw the towering entrance, she gasped.

「まあ、ひとが　いっぱい。」

"Wow! So many people!"

ぞろぞろ　すたすた、つぎから　つぎへと、ひとが　デパートの　なかに　はいって　いきます。

Streams of people flowed into the store nonstop.

「デパートって、よっぽど　たのしい　ところなのね。」

"This place must be really fun!"

なかへ　はいったとたん、おひめさまの　目が、まんまるに　なりました。

The moment she stepped inside, her eyes widened in amazement.

「まあ、ものが　いっぱい。」

"Wow! So many things!"

デパートの　なかは、みわたすかぎり　ものだらけです。

The store was packed with goods as far as she could see.

「ちかから　おくじょうまで、ひとつひとつ　みていったら、あたし、おばあさんに　なっちゃうわ。わるいけど、おかいもの　やめにしようかな.....。」

"If I try to look at everything from the basement to the rooftop, I’ll turn into an old lady before I finish! Maybe I should just give up on shopping..."

おひめさまが　つぶやいたときです。だれかが、とんとん、おひめさまの　かたを　たたきました。

Just as she muttered this, someone tapped her on the shoulder.

なんだか、やけに　ぴかぴかした　おじいさんです。

She turned around to find an unusually shiny old man.

「まあ、おかいものに　じかんが　かかって、おじいさんに　なっちゃったの？」おひめさまは　ききました。

"Oh my! Did shopping take so long that you turned into an old man?"

おじいさんは、きを　わるくしました。

The old man looked offended.

「わしゃ、ずっと　まえから、ほんものの　おじいさんじゃよ。」

"I’ve always been an old man, thank you very much," he huffed. 

そういってから、とくいそうに　つけたしました。「だいふごうの　おじいさんなんじゃ。うふっ。」

Then, with a proud grin, he added, "A wealthy old man!"

「ああ、それ、トランプあそびでしょ。あたしは、いちばん　びりの、だいひんみんに　なったことがあるわ。」

"Oh, like in card games? Once, I ended up as the 'Grand Peasant'!"

「ちがう、ちがう。わしゃ、ほんものの　だいふごうなんじゃ。つまり、おかねもち。ほれ、いれば　だって、みーんな　きんじゃもんね。」おじいさんは、いーっと、はを　むきだしました。

"No, no! I’m a real millionaire! I’m rich! Even my dentures are made of gold!" The old man flashed a golden-toothed grin.

「ところで、だいふごうさんは、なにを　かいにみえたんですか？」サムが　ききました。

Sam asked, "So, Mr. Millionaire, what are you here to buy?"

「よう　きいてくれた。わしゃ、とにかく、いちばん　たかいものが　かいたいんじゃが、なにを　かったら　いいか、わからんのじゃよ。」

"Glad you asked! I want to buy the most expensive thing in the store, but I don’t know what that is!"

「おもちゃの　きかんしゃ　ホームズは？　ワトソンっていう　きゃくしゃも　ついてるし、ちゃんと、パイプも　くわえて、ぼうしも　かぶってる　きかんしゃよ。」おひめさまが　いいました。

"How about the toy train Holmes? It comes with a Watson passenger car and even has a little pipe and hat!" suggested the princess.

「もっとる」おじいさんは、ひとこと　いいました。

"Got it already," the old man said.

「じゃ、おしゃべりにんぎょうは？」

"What about a talking doll?"

「もっとる。」

"Got it."

「じゃ、けっとうしょつきの　ゴキブリは？」

"A cockroach with a family lineage certificate?"

「もっとる。」

"Got it."

「じゃ、パンダもようの　おふとんは？」

"A panda-patterned futon?"

「もっとる。」

"Got it."

だいふごうの　おじいさんは、おしろも　いぬごやも、アフリカぞうも　へんそうセットも、おままごとの　せんたくきも、ダイヤモンドの　ネックレスも、おくさんも　おかあさんも、ゆうえんちまで、「もっとる」のです。

The millionaire had everything—castles, doghouses, African elephants, disguise kits, toy washing machines, diamond necklaces, even a wife, a mother, and an amusement park.

「じゃあ、デパートを、まるごと　かったら　どうかしら？」おひめさまが　いうと、だいふごうさんは、なきべそを　かきました。

"Then why not just buy the entire department store?" the princess suggested. The millionaire’s face twisted into a frown.

「もっとるんじゃよ、デパートも。」

"I already own the department store..."

「まあ、おきのどくに。」

"Oh dear," said the princess sympathetically.

おひめさまは、いいことを　おもいつきました。

Then, she had an idea.

「だったら、おかいものごっこ　しない？　うそっこで、なんにも　もってない　ふりするの。」

"Why don’t we play pretend shopping? We’ll act like we have nothing at all!"

「そんなこと、わしに　できるかな？」

"Can I really do that?"

「へいき、へいき。ちゃんと、やりかた　おしえて　あげるから。とっても　いい　はらっぱが　あるの。」

"Of course! I’ll teach you how. There's a perfect meadow for it!"

そこで、おひめさまと　サムと、だいふごうの　おじいさんは、おかいものを　やめて、おかいものごっこを　やりに、はらっぱへ　いきました。

So, the princess, Sam, and the millionaire abandoned their shopping plans and headed to the meadow for a game of pretend shopping.

おかしなことに、はらっぱは、さっきまでとは、すっかり　ようすが　かわっていました。

But something was strange—the meadow looked completely different.

まるぼうずなんです。

It was barren.

木のしたに、おみせやさんを　ひらこうにも、木が一ぽんも　ありません。くさの　うえに　ねころんで、さかなやさんの　マグロの　ふりを　しようにも、くさが　一ぽんも　ありません。

There were no trees to set up shop under, no grass to lie on and pretend to be a fishmonger’s tuna.

「どうなってるの？　はらっぱが、はらっぱじゃないみたい。」おひめさまは、きょろきょろ　しました。

"What happened? It doesn’t even look like the same meadow!" The princess looked around.

そこへ、「どいた、どいた。」

Just then— "Out of the way!"

ブルドーザーと　コンクリートミキサーと　ダンプカーが、やってきました。

A bulldozer, a concrete mixer, and a dump truck rolled in.

「はい、お三にんさん、ごめんなすって。」

"Hey, three of you, excuse us"

どやどや　ひとが　おりてきて、どすどす　あなほり、どんどん　いえたて、どかどか　ものいれ、たちまち、おみせを　一けん　たてて、ひきあげていったんです。

Workers jumped out, dug holes, put up walls, and within moments, a new store had appeared.

おひめさまは、むっと　しました。

The princess was furious.

おみせやさんが　できちゃったら、おかいものごっこする　ばしょが　ありません。

If a store get built there, no place for pretend play shoppings.

「はらっぱどろぼうは　やめて！ ここは、わたしたちの　あそびばよ。」おひめさまは、てんちょうと　いう、はまきをした、おじさんに　いいました。

"You stole our meadow! This is where we play!" she yelled at the store manager, a man with a headband.

てんちょうさんは、にっこりして、おみせの　かんばんを、ゆびさしました。

The man grinned and pointed at the sign:

そこには、「おあそびどうぐのせんもんスーパー　がんそこどもや百九十九ごうてん」と、かいてあります。

‘The Ultimate Kids' Store No. 199’

「なんでも　ありますよ。 ブランドものの、かんけりよう　あきかん、まがらない、おれない、ハイテクそざいの　たけうま。それにー」

"We’ve got everything! Branded tin cans for kick-the-can, high-tech stilts that never bend or break—"

「でも、百九十九ごうてんさんが　どいてくれなきゃ、かんけり、できないわ。」おひめさまは、いいました。

"But if you don’t leave, we can’t even play kick-the-can!" the princess protested.

「どく？　この百九十九ごうてんが？」てんちょうさんは、こわい　かおを　しました。

"Leave? This store?" he puts a mad face on.

「じょうだんいっちゃ　いけないよ。まるごと、どっかへ　うつしてくれる　ってんなら、はなしは　べつだけど。」そういうと、さっさと、おみせの　なかに、ひっこんでしまいました。

"Don’t be ridiculous! Unless someone can move the entire building, we’re staying right here," the manager sneered before disappearing inside.

「こういうときは、どうするもんなのかね？」だいふごうさんが、しんぱいそうに　いいました。

"What do we do now?" asked the worried millionaire.

おひめさまは　かんがえました。

The princess thought hard.

それから、きっぱりと　いいました。「はらっぱを　とりもどさなきゃ。こどもから　はらっぱを　ぬすむなんて、ゆるせないわ。こういうときは…　えーと、たこで、おみせを　つりあげちゃうの！」

Then, with determination, she said, "We have to take our meadow back! Stealing a playground from kids is unacceptable. The solution is... we’ll lift the store into the sky with kites!"

おひめさまは、おしろに　もどって、たこを　つくることに　しました。

Back at the castle, they began making kites.

「大きな　たこを、ずらずら　つなげた、れんだこが　いいじゃろ。わしゃ、こどものころから、たこづくりが　とくいだったんじゃ。」だいふごうさんは、おおばりきりで、れんだこの　つくりかたを、おしえてくれました。

"A long train of kites should do the trick! I was great at making kites as a kid," boasted the millionaire.

三にんは、おげんかんの　ドアより、もっと　大きな　たこを、たくさん　つくって、つなぎました。

With his help, they crafted a massive string of kites, bigger than the castle doors.

そして、こどもやに　もどると、ないしょで　やねに、たこを　むすびつけました。

Returning to the store, they secretly tied the kites to the roof.

「うまくいったわ。」おひめさまは　ささやきました。

"Perfect!" whispered the princess.

ひとつだけ、こまったことが　ありました。

There was just one problem.

ちっとも、かぜが　ないんです。

No wind.

たこは、くたんと、こどもやの　うえで、ひるねを　しています。

The kites sagged on the rooftop, motionless.

「大きな　せんぷうきが　あればねえ。」おひめさまは、つぶやきました。　

"If only we had a giant fan..." the princess muttered.

それを　きくと、だいふごうさんは　いいました。「大きな　せんぷうきなら、わしゃ、もっとるよ。」

Hearing this, the millionaire brightened. "I own a giant fan!"

だいふごうさんは、さっそく　おやしきに、でんわを　かけました。あっというまに、大きな　せんぷうきが　とどきました。ながーいコードで、おやしきから　でんきも　きています。

He quickly made a call, and soon, a huge fan arrived, powered by a long extension cord from his mansion.

「いくわよ。」おひめさまは、スイッチを　いれました。

"Here we go!" The princess flipped the switch.

たこは、そらに　のぼっていきました。

Whoosh!

もちろん、こどもや百九十九ごうてんを　ぶらさげて。

The kites soared, lifting the store high into the sky.

「よかった。これで、おかいものごっこが　できるわ。」

"Hooray! Now we can play!"

そのとき、スピーカーの　こえが、きこえてきました。

Just then, an announcement echoed:

「こちら、ごきんじょでんりょくで　ございます。ただいまより、しばらく　ていでんいたしますので、どちらさまも、ろうそくの　ごよういを　おわすれなきよう。」

"Attention: Temporary power outage. Please prepare candles."

そのとたん、ぴたり　せんぷうきが　とまりました。

Suddenly, the fan stopped.

そらに　うかんでいた　たこは　しょんぼり　おりてきて、こどもやは、また、もとの　ところに　いすわって　しまいました。

The kite that had been floating in the sky slowly descended, looking dejected, and the children sat back down in their original spots.

「セーフ！」

“Safe!”

てんちょうさんが、まどから、Ｖサインを　だしました。

The store manager flashed a victory sign from the window.

「あーあ。」

"Oh no..."

おひめさまは、たこを　やねから　おろすと、いいました。

The princess sighed as she took the kite down from the roof.

「もちあげるのが　むりだったら、おしてみたら　どうかしら？」

"If lifting it is too hard, why not try pushing it?"

「 この　三にんで？」サムが、しかめつらで　いいました。

"With just the three of us?" Sam frowned.

「だったら、だったら......そうだわ！、おすもうさんに　てつだってもらえば　いいわ。」

"Then... then... Oh! I know! Let’s ask some sumo wrestlers for help!"

「なるほど。でも、おすもうさんには　しりあいが　いませんよ。」

"I see... but we don’t know any sumo wrestlers."

それを　きくと、だいふごうさんは　いいました。

Hearing this, the millionaire spoke up.

「おすもうさんなら、わしゃ、もっとるよ。」

"If it's sumo wrestlers you're looking for, I have plenty."

おひめさまと　サムは、びっくりして、だいふごうさんを　みました。

The princess and Sam stared at him in surprise.

「だって、わしゃ、おすもうべやを、まるまる　もっとるんだもん。」

"That’s because I own an entire sumo stable!"

だいふごうさんは、さっそく　おすもうべやに、でんわを　かけました。

Without delay, the millionaire called the sumo stable.

「どすこい　どすこい。」

"Dosukoi, dosukoi!"

あっというまに、よこづなから　まえがしらまで、おすもうさんが　せいぞろい　しました。

In no time, sumo wrestlers of all ranks, from grand champions to lower-ranked wrestlers, assembled.

おすもうさんたちは、こどもやの　うらに　まわりました。

The sumo wrestlers moved to the back of the store.

「はっけよい」で　いっせいに、こどもやに　手を　かけました。

At the signal "Ready, Hakkeyoi!" they all placed their hands on the store.

「よーい、はっけよい。」

"Ready, Hakkeyoi!"

おひめさまも、こえを　かけました。

Even the princess joined in cheering them on.

どの　おすもうさんも、みるからに　ちからもちそうです。

Each sumo wrestler looked incredibly strong.

ところが、こどもやは　うごきません。

However, the store didn’t budge.

「へんねえ。」おひめさまは、くびを　かしげました。

"That's strange…" The princess tilted her head in confusion.

こどもやは、右に　かたむいたり、左に　かたむいたり　しています。

The store swayed slightly to the right, then to the left.

しばらくすると、よこづなの　ふごうやまが、おひめさまの　ところに　きました。

After a while, the grand champion, Fugoyama, approached the princess.

ふごうやまは、かすれた　こえで、いいました。「すまんで　ごわっす。わしら、おしずもうは　にがてで　ごわっす。まわしが　とれないと、ちからが　でないっす。」

In a hoarse voice, he said, "Sorry, but we're not good at pushing. Without our mawashi (sumo belt), we can’t exert our full strength."

そして、「らいばしょ、がんばります。」と、いって、かえっていきました。

And with that, he added, "We'll do our best in the next tournament," and left.

「のこった　のこった。」と、てんちょうさんが　わらいました。

"Left, left!" the store manager chuckled.

もちあげるのも、おすのも　だめ。

Lifting didn’t work. Pushing didn’t work.

こうなったら、こどもやに、ひとりで　とことこ　あるいてもらうしか　ては　ありません。

That only left one option—the store had to walk away on its own.

おひめさまは、こどもやを　ながめました。

The princess stared at the store.

「そうだわ！ あしを　つければ　いいのよ。 そしたら、あるいて　どいてもらえるでしょ。」

"That's it! We just need to give it legs! Then it can walk away on its own."

ただ、もんだいは、どういう　あしを　つつけるかです。

But the problem was, what kind of legs?

「うーん、あしねえ.....。」

"Hmm… legs, huh…"

おひめさまは、はらっぱに　ねっころがりました。

The princess lay down in the field.

おひめさまの　目のまえを、むかでが　一ぴき、あるいていきました。たくさんの　あしを、せっせと　うごかして。

Just then, a centipede scurried past her eyes, moving its many legs in a synchronized rhythm.

おひめさまは、ぱっと、たちあがりました。

She suddenly jumped up.

「こどもを　あつめて、むかでに　しなきゃ。」

"We need to gather the children and turn them into a centipede!"

「いったい、どういうことですか？」サムが　ききました。

"What do you mean?" Sam asked.

「みんなで　ゆかしたに　はいって、おみこしみたいに、こどもや百九十九ごうてんを　かついであるくの！」

"Everyone will crawl under the floor, lift the store like a portable shrine, and walk with it!"

「こどもなら、わしゃ、いっぱい　もっとるよ。」

"I have lots of children too!"

だいふごうさんは、さっそく、おやしきに　でんわを　かけました。

The millionaire immediately called his mansion.

ひげの　はえた　こどもから、はの　はえていない　こどもまで、あっというまに、こどもが　百にん　あつまりました。

In no time at all, a hundred children—some with beards, some without teeth—had gathered.

みんなは、おかいものの　ふりをして、こどもやに　はいりました。

Pretending to be shopping, they quietly entered the store.

こっそり　ひっそり、ゆかしたに　もぐって、「わっしょい、わっしょい。」こどもやを　かついで、あるきだしました。

Then, stealthily, they slipped under the floor. "Wa-shoi! Wa-shoi!" They lifted the store and started walking.

「なんだ、なんだ。」

"What’s going on?"

あわてて　たちあがった、てんちょうさんの　はなの　うえに、おれない　まがらない　ハイテクたけうまが、おちてきました。

The startled store manager stood up, only to have a high-tech stilts toy—rigid and unbendable—fall onto his nose.

おかげで、てんちょうさんの　たかい　はなは、おれて　まがって　しまいました。

As a result, his tall nose bent and broke.

こどもやを　かついだ　こどもたちは、せっかくなので、まちの　なかを、ねりあるくことに　しました。

The children carrying the store decided to parade through town since they had already started.

「わっしょい　わっしょい」

"Wa-shoi! Wa-shoi!"

おひめさまも　大きな　こえで、かけごえを　かけました。

The princess cheered in a loud voice.

おかいものに　きていた　ひとたちも、おかいものを　やめて、かつぐほうに　まわっています。

Shoppers abandoned their shopping and joined in the carrying.

いつのまにか、だいふごうさんまで、わっしょいしています。

Even the millionaire found himself shouting "Wa-shoi!"

おしろの　まえに　くると、「おお、オミコシアゲハー。」王さまが、はしりでてきました。

When they reached the front of the castle, the king ran out, exclaiming, "Oh! An omikoshi parade!"

おでかけから　もどった　女王さまは、「そうそう、らいしゅうの　うんどうは、『おでかけは、おみこし　かついで　にぎやかに』。これが　いいわ。」と、いいました。

The queen, returning from an outing, added, "Yes, yes! For next week's exercise event, let's go with ‘A lively outing carrying an omikoshi!’ That sounds perfect."

こどもや　みこしは、いい　ちょうしで　すすみました。

The store procession moved on steadily.

バスどおりを　とおり、でんしゃどおりを　とおり、ラーメンよこちょうを　ぬけ、えきまえどおりに　でてきました。

They passed the bus street, the train street, slipped through Ramen Alley, and arrived at the main road in front of the station.

もう　あせだくです。

By then, they were drenched in sweat.

もっと　もっと　かつぎたいけど、ここらで　ひとやすみ　したいかんじです。

They wanted to carry on longer, but they were also ready for a break.

デパートの　まえに　きたとき、おひめさまは、いいことを　おもいつきました。

When they reached the front of a department store, the princess had a brilliant idea.

「タイム」おひめさまは　さけびました。

"Time out!" she called.

「ちょっと　まってて。あたし、おかいものけんで、アイスキャンデー　かってくるわ。」

"Wait here. I'll use my shopping tickets to buy ice pops!"

「わしゃ、もっー。」だいふごうさんは、「もっとる」と　いいかけてから、すぐ、うれしそうに　いいなおしました。

"I have—" The millionaire started to say, "I have some," but quickly changed his mind and smiled.

「わしにも　たのむよ。わしも、もってないんじゃよ。うふっ。」

"Get me one too. I don’t actually have any. Hehe!"

おひめさまは、アイスキャンデーを　二百ぽん、かいました。

The princess bought 200 ice pops.

小さい　こどもから、大きい　こどもまで、なかよく　アイスキャンデーを　たべました。

From the smallest children to the biggest, everyone happily ate their ice pops together.

「とほほ.....。」

"Ugh…"

てんちょうさんは、アイスキャンデーで、はなを　ひやして、ためいきを　つきました。

The store manager, cooling his bent nose with an ice pop, let out a deep sigh.

「ま、うちの　みせが、まるごと　おみこしに　なるってのも、わるくないかも　しれないけど.....。」

"Well, I suppose having my store turned into a portable shrine isn’t the worst thing in the world…"

そのとき、おひめさまに、すばらしい　アイデアが　うかびました。

At that moment, a brilliant idea struck the princess.

「そうだわ。百九十九ごうてんさん　だけじゃなくて、百九十八ごうてん、百九十七ごうてんも、百九十六ごうてんも、ぜーんぶ　かついで、はこびましょうよ。だって、どの　おみせも、はらっぱに　あるんでしょ。」

"That’s it! Instead of just store number 199, let's carry store 198, store 197, store 196—all of them! After all, they’re all in the same field, right?"

「でも、いったい、どこに　もっていくんです？」サムが、りくつっぽく　いいました。

"But where would we take them?" Sam asked, skeptical as always.

おひめさまは、すこし　かんがえました。

The princess thought for a moment.
