(The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats)
むかし、ある ところに、おかあさんやぎが いました。おかあさんやぎには、七ひきの 子やぎが いました。
Once upon a time, there was a mother goat who had seven little kids.
ある日、おかあさんやぎは、森へ 行って、えさを とってこようと 思いました。
One day, the mother goat decided to go into the forest to fetch some food.
そこで、七ひきの 子やぎを よんで、いいました。
She gathered her seven kids and said,
「わたしの るすに、おおかみが 来るかも しれないから、けっして ドアを あけては いけないよ。おおかみは、声が しゃがれているし、足が 黒いから、すぐ わかるからね。」
"While I'm away, the wolf might come, so never open the door. You can recognize the wolf easily because he has a rough voice and black feet."
子やぎたちは、言いました。「うん、だいじょうぶ、しんぱいしないで。」
The little goats replied, "Okay, don't worry, we'll be careful."
しばらく すると、だれかが ドアを たたいて 言いました。
Not long after, someone knocked on the door and said,
「ただいま。おかあさんだよ。おいしい ものを とって きたよ。」
"I'm back! It's your mother. I brought you some tasty food."
けれども、声が しゃがれて います。
But the voice was rough.
子やぎたちは、さけびました。「あけないよ。おかあさんの 声は、そんな しゃがれ声じゃ ないよ。」
The little goats shouted, "We won't open the door! Our mother's voice isn't rough like that!"
おおかみは、お店に 行って、チョークを 買いました。
The wolf went to the store and bought some chalk.
チョークを 食べて、声を きれいに して、また、やって きました。
He ate the chalk to make his voice smooth and then came back.
「ただいま。おかあさんだよ。おいしい ものを とって きたわよ。」
"I'm back! It's your mother. I brought you some tasty food."
ところが、ドアの まどに、黒い 足が 見えたので、「あけないよ。おかあさんの 足は、そんなに 黒くないよ。」
But when the little goats looked through the window, they saw black feet. "We won't open the door! Our mother's feet aren't black like that!"
おおかみは、こなやに 行きました。
The wolf went to the miller.
「おれの 足に こなを ふりかけろ。」
"Sprinkle flour on my feet," he demanded.
ところが こなやは、あやしいと 思って ことわりました。
The miller thought it was suspicious and refused,
おおかみは、「言うことを きかないと、おまえを 食っちゃうぞ。」と、おどしたので、こなやは こわく なって、こなを かけて やりました。
but the wolf threatened, "If you don't do it, I'll eat you!" The miller got scared and sprinkled flour on the wolf's feet.
おおかみは、またまた ドアを たたいて いいました。
The wolf went back to the house, knocked on the door again, and said,
「ただいま。おかあさんだよ。おいしい ものを とって きたよ。」
"I'm back! It's your mother. I brought you some tasty food."
子やぎたちは、白い 足を 見て、あんしんしました。
The little goats saw the white feet and felt safe.
「お帰りなさい。」
"Welcome back!"
ドアを あけて 入って きたのは、おおかみでした。
They opened the door, and in came the wolf!
子やぎたちは、「きゃあっ。」と 言って、かくれました。
The little goats screamed and ran to hide.
一ぴきは テーブルの 下、
One hid under the table,
二ひきめは ベッドの 中、
the second in the bed,
三びきめは ストーブの 中、
the third in the stove,
四ひきめは だいどころ、
the fourth in the kitchen,
五ひきめは 戸だなの 中、
the fifth in the cupboard,
六ぴきめは せんめんきの 下、
the sixth under the sink,
七ひきめは 時計の はこの 中。
and the seventh in the clock case.
ところが、つぎつぎに 見つかって、つぎつぎに 食べられて しまいました。
But one by one, they were found and eaten,
見つからなかったのは、時計の はこに 入った 子やぎだけでした。
except for the one hiding in the clock case.
おおかみは、おなか いっぱい 食べると、外に 出て、木の 下に ごろり。
The wolf, having eaten his fill, went outside and lay under a tree,
ぐうぐう ねて しまいました。
falling fast asleep.
そこへ おかあさんやぎが 帰ってきました。
The mother goat returned home and cried out,
「まあ、なんと いう ことを！どうしたの、子やぎたち、へんじを しなさい。」
"Oh no, what happened? Kids, answer me!"
「はい。」と へんじを したのは、ただの 一ぴき だけです。
"Here I am," answered the one hiding in the clock case.
「おおかみが 来て、みんな 食べられちゃったの。」
"The wolf came and ate everyone else!"
おかあさんやぎは、外に とび出しました。外の 草原に、おおかみが ねて いました。
The mother goat ran outside and found the wolf sleeping in the meadow.
「おや、おなかが うごいて いるわ。まだ たすかるかも しれない。」
"Oh, look, his belly is moving. Maybe they are still alive!"
おかあさんやぎは、一ぴきの 子やぎに 言いました。
She told the remaining little goat,
「大いそぎで、はさみと はりと 糸を とって おいで。」
"Quick, bring me scissors, a needle, and thread!"
おかあさんやぎは、はさみで、おおかみの おなかを 切りひらきました。
The mother goat cut open the wolf's belly with the scissors,
つぎつぎと、子やぎたちが とび出して きました。
and out jumped the little goats, one after another.
「たすかったあ！」
"We're saved!"
六ぴき ぜんぶ、けがも して いませんでした。
All six were unharmed.
おかあさんやぎは、はしゃいで いる 子やぎに 言いました。
The mother goat then said,
「おまえたち、石を もって おいで。」
"Now, bring some stones, you all."
七ひきの 子やぎは、「えっさ。」「こらさ」と、石を はこびました。
The seven little goats carried stones, saying, "Heave-ho!"
おかあさんは、石を おおかみの おなかに つめこみました。そして、あっと いう間に、ぬいつけて しまいました。
The mother goat filled the wolf's belly with stones and sewed it up quickly.
「さあ、これで よし。」
"All done," she said.
やぎたちは、そっと かくれて、ようすを 見ました。
The goats hid and watched carefully.
おおかみが 目を さましました。「うーん。食べすぎたかな。やたらと のどが かわく。水を のむか。」
When the wolf woke up, he groaned, "Ugh, I ate too much. I'm so thirsty. I need some water."
立ち上がると、「うーん。おなかが おもたいぞ。」
He tried to stand up, but his belly felt so heavy.
よたよた 歩いて、いどに 行きました。
He staggered to the well, leaned over to drink,
かがんで 水を のもうと すると、体が おもすぎて、いどの 中に ぼっちゃあーん！
but his weight pulled him down, and he fell into the well with a splash!
七ひきの 子やぎは、それを 見ると、「やったあ！おおかみ しんだ。」「ばんざい！おおかみ しんだ。」
The seven little goats cheered, "Hooray! The wolf is dead! Hooray!"
みんな うれしくなって、おかあさんやぎと いっしょに いどの まわりを おどって まわりました。
They were so happy, and they danced around the well with their mother.
